Fluorene-Based Donor-Acceptor Copolymers Containing Functionalized Benzotriazole Units: Tunable Emission and their Electrical Properties

Effects of azole rings with different chalcogen atoms on ESIPT behavior for benzochalcogenazolyl-substituted hydroxyfluorenes

ESIPT behavior has attracted a lot of eyes of researchers in recent years because of its unique optical properties. Due to its large Stokes shift and double emission fluorescence, white light can be generated in the fluorophore based on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) principle. The excited state proton transfer behavior of hydroxylated benzoxazole (BO-OH), benzothiazole (BS-OH) and benzoselenazole (BSe-OH) have been investigated in heptane, chloroform and DMF solvents. By comparing the infrared vibration spectra and the variation of bond parameters from the S₀ to S₁ states, and analyzing the frontier molecular orbitals, the influence of hydrogen bond dynamics, the solvent polarity, charge redistribution and the effects of different proton acceptors on proton transfer were observed. The only structural difference among the three substituted hydroxyfluorenes is the heteroatom in the azole ring (oxygen, sulfur and selenium, respectively). We have scanned the potential energy curve of the ESIPT process, and compared the potential barrier, it is found that the heavier chalcogen atoms are more favorable for proton transfer. At the same time, the potential application of changing heteroatoms in the azole ring by walking down the chalcogenic group in crystal luminescence color regulation is also discussed.

Synthesis of π-Conjugated Polymers Containing Benzotriazole Units via Palladium-Catalyzed Direct C-H Cross-Coupling Polycondensation for OLEDs Applications

Four D-π-A conjugated polymers, namely P1-P4, which contain benzotriazole building blocks in their backbone as acceptor, are synthesized via palladium-catalyzed direct C-H cross-coupling polycondensation of 5,6-difluorobenzotriazole with different thiophene derivatives, including 3-octylthiophene, 2,2'-bithiophene, thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine, and 4,4-dioctyl-4H-silolo-[3,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene as donor units, respectively. Taking the polymer P1 as an example, the chemical structure of the polymer is demonstrated by 1H and 19F NMR spectra. The optical, electrochemical, and thermal properties of these polymers are assessed by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. DFT simulations of all polymers are also performed to understand their physicochemical properties. Furthermore, P1 and P2, which have relatively higher molecular weights and better fluorescent quantum efficiency than those of P3 and P4, are utilized as lighting emitters for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), affording promising green and red luminescence with 0.07% and 0.14% of maximum external quantum efficiency, respectively, based on a device with an architecture of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PTAA/the polymer emitting layer/TPBi/LiF/Al.

Combined Spectroscopic and TD-DFT Analysis to Elucidate Substituent and Acidochromic Effects in Organic Dyes: A Case Study on Amino- versus Nitro-Substituted 2,4-Diphenylquinolines

A combined spectroscopic and TD-DFT case study was performed, to identify a robust method to calculate the complex near UV/Vis absorption spectra of various amino- vs. nitro-substituted 2,4-diphenylquinolines, which vary strongly under neutral and successively acidic conditions. For this, different DFT functionals were tested for geometry optimization and the TD part to calculate the neutral and different protonated species in a fast screening approach, i. e. using single point calculations in an implicit solvent. Offset-corrected M06HF, hitherto only applied to polymers, was identified as a suitable method to reproduce the absorption spectra in a reasonable fashion for all different substitution pattern and all different protonated species at different pH values; moreover, the method properly predicts the energetic ordering of low-lying n-π* and ππ* transitions, which is decisive for the non-/emissive nature of the different compounds. In all, this might provide a valuable tool for computer-aided design of related classes of compounds.
