Deposition of Chitosan on Plasma-Treated Polymers-A Review

Materials for biomedical applications often need to be coated to enhance their performance, such as their biocompatibility, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, or to assist the regeneration process and influence cell adhesion. Among naturally available substances, chitosan meets the above criteria. Most synthetic polymer materials do not enable the immobilization of the chitosan film. Therefore, their surface should be altered to ensure the interaction between the surface functional groups and the amino or hydroxyl groups in the chitosan chain. Plasma treatment can provide an effective solution to this problem. This work aims to review plasma methods for surface modification of polymers for improved chitosan immobilization. The obtained surface finish is explained in view of the different mechanisms involved in treating polymers with reactive plasma species. The reviewed literature showed that researchers usually use two different approaches: direct immobilization of chitosan on the plasma-treated surface or indirect immobilization by additional chemistry and coupling agents, which are also reviewed. Although plasma treatment leads to remarkably improved surface wettability, this was not the case for chitosan-coated samples, where a wide range of wettability was reported ranging from almost superhydrophilic to hydrophobic, which may have a negative effect on the formation of chitosan-based hydrogels.

A Novel High-Energy Vacuum Ultraviolet Light Photofunctionalization Approach for Decomposing Organic Molecules around Titanium

Titanium undergoes biological aging, represented by increased hydrophobicity and surface accumulation of organic molecules over time, which compromises the osseointegration of dental and orthopedic implants. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of a novel UV light source, 172 nm wavelength vacuum UV (VUV), in decomposing organic molecules around titanium. Methylene blue solution used as a model organic molecule placed in a quartz ampoule with and without titanium specimens was treated with four different UV light sources: (i) ultraviolet C (UVC), (ii) high-energy UVC (HUVC), (iii) proprietary UV (PUV), and (iv) VUV. After one minute of treatment, VUV decomposed over 90% of methylene blue, while there was 3-, 3-, and 8-fold more methylene blue after the HUVC, PUV, and UVC treatments, respectively. In dose-dependency experiments, maximal methylene blue decomposition occurred after one minute of VUV treatment and after 20-30 min of UVC treatment. Rapid and effective VUV-mediated organic decomposition was not influenced by the surface topography of titanium or its alloy and even occurred in the absence of titanium, indicating only a minimal photocatalytic contribution of titanium dioxide to organic decomposition. VUV-mediated but not other light source-mediated methylene blue decomposition was proportional to its concentration. Plastic tubes significantly reduced methylene blue decomposition for all light sources. These results suggest that VUV, in synergy with quartz ampoules, mediates rapid and effective organic decomposition compared with other UV sources. This proof-of-concept study paves the way for rapid and effective VUV-powered photofunctionalization of titanium to overcome biological aging.

Flexible selection of the functional-group ratio on a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface using a single-gas plasma treatment

During plasma treatment of polymers, etching occurs and functional groups are introduced on their surface. We assumed that controlling the etching rate would enable plasma treatment using a single gas to control the ratio of functional groups generated on a polymer's surface, although previous studies have indicated that several different types of functional groups are formed when the gaseous species are varied. In this study, we selected the base pressure (BP) as a parameter for controlling the etching rate and subjected polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to plasma treatments using only He gas at various BPs. The chemical composition of the surface of the plasma-treated PTFE samples was evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the ratios of fluorine (CF3, CF2, C-F), oxygen (O-C[double bond, length as m-dash]O, C[double bond, length as m-dash]O, C-O), and carbon (C-C, C[double bond, length as m-dash]C) groups were quantified from the C 1s-XPS spectra. The fluorine-group ratio decreased and the oxygen- and carbon-group ratios increased with decreasing BP. The results demonstrated that plasma treatment using a single gas enabled flexible selection of the ratio of functional groups generated on PTFE via control of the BP.

Gas Dynamics Processes above the Polymers Surface under Irradiation with Broadband High-Brightness Radiation in the Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectrum Region

Obtaining new data on the gas-dynamic responses from the polymer samples (polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE) irradiated by powerful VUV radiation from compressed plasma flows is in the focus of the present study. An erosion type magnetoplasma compressor (MPC), a type of plasma focus discharge, was used as a radiation source. The operating voltages of the MPC were between 15 and 25 kV, the maximum measured discharge current was 200 kA, and the radiation energy in the VUV range was ≈1–2 kJ. The VUV fluxes on the sample surface were high and equal to ≈10²²–10²⁴ photons cm⁻²·s⁻¹. Double-exposure laser holographic interferometry and schlieren photography were used to diagnose and visualize the gas-dynamic structures. The spatial distribution of the parameters (temperature, pressure and concentrations of electrons and ions) was defined based on the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium. It has been demonstrated that the maximum temperature ranged from ≈ 10 to 15 kK in the plasma layer. The electron concentration was ≈ (0.7–1.6) × 10¹⁸ cm⁻³ in this region. The used techniques of optical diagnostics and procedures of result processing make it possible to obtain data on the dynamics of polymer ablation, which occurs when their surface is exposed to powerful energy fluxes (thermal, shock-wave, radiation, and other extreme loads).

Surface Modifications of Wheat Cultivar Bologna upon Treatment with Non-Equilibrium Gaseous Plasma

Seeds of wheat cultivar Bologna were treated with a low-pressure, inductively coupled, radio frequency oxygen plasma. E-mode and H-mode plasma at the real powers of 25 and 275 W, respectively, was used at treatment times of 0.1–300 s. Plasma affected seed surface chemistry, determined by XPS, and surface topography, visualized by SEM. The combined effects of functionalization and etching modified seed surface wettability. The water contact angle (WCA) exponentially decreased with treatment time and correlated with the product of discharge power and treatment time well. Super-hydrophilicity was seen at a few 1000 Ws, and the necessary condition was over 35 at.% of surface oxygen. Wettability also correlated well with O-atom dose, where super-hydrophilicity was seen at 10²⁴–10²⁵ m⁻². A relatively high germination percentage was seen, up to 1000 Ws (O-atom dose 10²³–10²⁴ m⁻²), while seed viability remained unaffected only up to about 100 Ws. Extensively long treatments decreased germination percentage and viability.

Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet Operated in Ar and He: From Basic Plasma Properties to Vacuum Ultraviolet, Electric Field and Safety Thresholds Measurements in Plasma Medicine

Application desired functionality as well as operation expenses of cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) devices scale with properties like gas selection. The present contribution provides a comparative investigation for a CAP system operated in argon or helium at different operation voltages and distance to the surface. Comparison of power dissipation, electrical field strength and optical emission spectroscopy from vacuum ultraviolet over visible up to near infrared ((V)UV-VIS-NIR) spectral range is carried out. This study is extended to safety relevant investigation of patient leakage current, induced surface temperature and species density for ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). It is found that in identical operation conditions (applied voltage, distance to surface and gas flow rate) the dissipated plasma power is about equal (up to 10 W), but the electrical field strength differs, having peak values of 320 kV/m for Ar and up to 300 kV/m for He. However, only for Ar CAP could we measure O3 up to 2 ppm and NOx up to 7 ppm. The surface temperature and leakage values of both systems showed different slopes, with the biggest surprise being a constant leakage current over distance for argon. These findings may open a new direction in the plasma source development for Plasma Medicine.

Visualization of Activated Area on Polymers for Evaluation of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jets

The treatment of a polymer surface using an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) causes a local increase of the surface free energy (SFE). The plasma-treated zone can be visualized with the use of a test ink and quantitatively evaluated. However, the inked area is shrinking with time. The shrinkage characteristics are collected using activation image recording (AIR). The recording is conducted by a digital camera. The physical mechanisms of activation area shrinkage are discussed. The error sources are analyzed and methods of error reduction are proposed. The standard deviation of the activation area is less than 3%. Three polymers, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and polyoxymethylene (POM), are examined as a test substrate material. Due to a wide variation range of SFE and a small hydrophobic recovery, HDPE is chosen. Since the chemical mixtures tend to temporal changes of the stoichiometry, the pure formamide test ink with 58 mN/m is selected. The method is tested for the characterization of five different types of discharge: (i) pulsed arc APPJ with the power of about 700 W; (ii) piezoelectric direct discharge APPJ; (iii) piezoelectric driven needle corona in ambient air; (iv) piezoelectric driven plasma needle in argon; and (v) piezoelectric driven dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). For piezoelectrically driven discharges, the power was either 4.5 W or 8 W. It is shown how the AIR method can be used to solve different engineering problems.

Optical Emission Spectroscopy as a Diagnostic Tool for Characterization of Atmospheric Plasma Jets

A suitable technique for localized surface treatment of solid materials is an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ). The properties of the APPJ plasma often depend on small details like the concentration of gaseous impurities what influences the surface kinetics. The simplest and often most useful configuration of the APPJ is presented, characterized by optical emission spectroscopy (OES), and results are discussed in view of various papers. Furthermore, results of additional recent papers on the characterization of the APPJ by OES are presented as well. Because the APPJ is operating at atmospheric pressure, even the water vapor traces may significantly alter the type and concentration of reactive species. The APPJ sustained in noble gases represents a source of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation that is absorbed in the surface of the treated material, thus causing bond scission. The addition of minute amounts of reactive gases causes significant suppression of VUV radiation and the formation of reactive radicals. These radicals such as OH, O, N, NO, O3, and alike interact chemically with the surface causing its functionalization. Huge gradients of these radicals have been reported, so the surface finish is limited to the area reached by the radicals. Particularly OH radicals significantly prevail in the OES spectra, even when using very pure noble gas. They may cause suppression of other spectral features. OH radicals are especially pronounced in Ar plasmas. Their density decreases exponentially with a distance from the APPJ orifice.

Effects of Nonthermal Plasma on Morphology, Genetics and Physiology of Seeds: A Review

Nonthermal plasma (NTP), or cold plasma, has shown many advantages in the agriculture sector as it enables removal of pesticides and contaminants from the seed surface, increases shelf life of crops, improves germination and resistance to abiotic stress. Recent studies show that plasma treatment indeed offers unique and environmentally friendly processing of different seeds, such as wheat, beans, corn, soybeans, barley, peanuts, rice and Arabidopsis thaliana, which could reduce the use of agricultural chemicals and has a high potential in ecological farming. This review covers the main concepts and underlying principles of plasma treatment techniques and their interaction with seeds. Different plasma generation methods and setups are presented and the influence of plasma treatment on DNA damage, gene expression, enzymatic activity, morphological and chemical changes, germination and resistance to stress, is explained. Important plasma treatment parameters and interactions of plasma species with the seed surface are presented and critically discussed in correlation with recent advances in this field. Although plasma agriculture is a relatively new field of research, and the complex mechanisms of interactions are not fully understood, it holds great promise for the future. This overview aims to present the advantages and limitations of different nonthermal plasma setups and discuss their possible future applications.

Effect of Plasma-Treatment of Interleaved Thermoplastic Films on Delamination in Interlayer Fibre Hybrid Composite Laminates

Safe, light, and high-performance engineering structures may be generated by adopting composite materials with stable damage process (i.e., without catastrophic delamination). Interlayer hybrid composites may fail stably by suppressing catastrophic interlayer delamination. This paper provides a detailed analysis of delamination occurring in poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) or polystyrene (PS) film interleaved carbon-glass/epoxy hybrid composites. The ABS films toughened the interfaces of the hybrid laminates, generating materials with higher mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (G_IIC), delamination stress (σ_del), and eliminating the stress drops observed in the reference baseline material, i.e., without interleaf films, during tensile tests. Furthermore, stable behaviour was achieved by treating the ABS films in oxygen plasma. The mechanical performance (G_IIC and σ_del) of hybrid composites containing PS films, were initially reduced but increased after oxygen plasma treatment. The plasma treatment introduced O-C=O and O-C-O-O functional groups on the PS surfaces, enabling better epoxy/PS interactions. Microscopy analysis provided evidence of the toughening mechanisms, i.e., crack deflection, leading plasma-treated PS to stabilise delamination.

Recent Advances in Surface Activation of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) by Gaseous Plasma Treatments

Fluorinated polymers are renowned for their chemical inertness and thus poor wettability and adhesion of various coatings. Apart from chemical methods employing somewhat toxic primers, gaseous plasma treatment is a popular method for the modification of surface properties. Different authors have used different plasmas, and the resultant surface finish spans between super-hydrophobic and super-hydrophilic character. Some authors also reported the hydrophobic recovery. The review of recent papers is presented and discussed. Correlations between plasma and/or discharge parameters and the surface finish are drawn and the most important conclusions are summarized. The concentration of oxygen in the surface film as probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is inversely dependent on the concentration of oxygen in gaseous plasma. The predominant mechanism leading to hydrophilic surface finish is bond scission by deep ultraviolet radiation rather than functionalization with reactive oxygen species.
