Abstract
A series of phenyl β-carbonyl selenides with o-ester functionality substituted on the oxygen atom with chiral and achiral alkyl groups was synthesized. All compounds are the first examples of this type of organoselenium derivatives with an ester substituent in the ortho position. The obtained derivatives were tested as antioxidants and anticancer agents to see the influence of an ester functionality on the bioactivity of β-carbonyl selenides by replacing the o-amide group with an o-ester group. The best results as an antioxidant agent were observed for O-((1R,2S,5R)-(-)-2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexyl)-2-((2-oxopropyl)selanyl)benzoate. The most cytotoxic derivative against breast cancer MCF-7 cell lines was O-(methyl)-2-((2-oxopropyl)selanyl)benzoate and against human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 was O-(2-pentyl)-2-((2-oxopropyl)selanyl)benzoate.

Abstract
Lipases, crucial catalysts in biochemical synthesis, find extensive applications across industries such as food, medicine, and cosmetics. The efficiency of lipase-catalyzed reactions is significantly influenced by the choice of solvents. Polar organic solvents often result in a decrease, or even loss, of lipase activity. Conversely, nonpolar organic solvents induce excessive rigidity in lipases, thereby affecting their activity. While the advent of new solvents like ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents has somewhat improved the activity and stability of lipases, it fails to address the fundamental issue of lipases' poor solvent tolerance. Hence, the rational design of lipases for enhanced solvent tolerance can significantly boost their industrial performance. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the structural characteristics and properties of lipases in various solvent systems and emphasizes various strategies of protein engineering for non-aqueous media to improve lipases' solvent tolerance. This study provides a theoretical foundation for further enhancing the solvent tolerance and industrial properties of lipases.

Abstract
Puerarin is a flavonoid known as a natural antioxidant found in the root of Pueraria robata. Its antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory effects have attracted attention as a potential functional ingredient in various bioindustries. However, puerarin has limited bioavailability owing to its low lipid solubility and stability. Acylation is proposed as a synthesis method to overcome this limitation. In this study, lipase-catalyzed acylation of puerarin and various acyl donors was performed, and the enzymatic synthetic condition was optimized. Under the condition (20 g/L of Novozym 435, palmitic anhydride, 1:15, 40 °C, tetrahydrofuran (THF)), the synthesis of puerarin ester achieved a significantly high conversion (98.97%) within a short time (3 h). The molecule of the synthesized puerarin palmitate was identified by various analyses such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). The lipid solubility and the radical scavenging activity were also evaluated. Puerarin palmitate showed a slight decrease in antioxidant activity, but lipid solubility was significantly improved, improving bioavailability. The high conversion achieved for puerarin esters in this study will provide the foundation for industrial applications.

Abstract
An increasing number of studies have shown that many nicotinamide derivatives exhibited extensive biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory and antitumor activity. In this paper, a green, concise synthesis of nicotinamide derivatives in sustainable continuous-flow microreactors catalysed by Novozym® 435 from Candida antarctica has been developed. Application of an easily obtainable and reusable lipase in the synthesis of nicotinamide derivatives from methyl nicotinate and amines/benzylamines reacted for 35 min at 50 °C led to high product yields (81.6-88.5%). Environmentally friendly tert-amyl alcohol was applied as a reaction medium. Substantially shorter reaction times as well as a significant increase in the product yield were obtained as compared to the batch process. This innovative approach provides a promising green, efficient and rapid synthesis strategy for pharmaceutical synthesis and further activity research of novel nicotinamide derivatives.

Abstract
Glutaraldehyde is usually used as a cross-linking agent in the immobilization of enzymes, but this will have a negative effect on the enzyme. Dialdehyde starch can effectively replace glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent, but the large particle size of dialdehyde starch affects the performance of immobilized enzyme. In this study, dialdehyde starch nanoparticles (DSNP) were combined with modified Fe3O4 to obtain magnetic carrier (MDSNP), and Candida Antarctica lipase B (CALB) was crosslinked to the carrier to obtain magnetic immobilized enzyme (MDSNPCALB). The characterization results show that the functional groups of each material have obvious characteristic absorption peaks, strong diffraction peaks and typical crystal structures, high magnetism, no coercivity, relatively good dispersion and nano particle size. MDSNPCALB was added to degummed rice bran oil (RBO) and ethanolamine was used as an acyl receptor for acylation and deacidification. After repeated use for 10 times, MDSNPCALB remained highly active, indicating that MDSNPCALB can be effectively used for the deacidification of RBO.

Abstract
Geranyl butyrate and citronellyl butyrate esters are industrially important fruity flavors that are being used in food and as a fragrance in cosmetics. Previously terpenyl fruity flavors have been successfully synthesized in organic solvents using crude seedlings enzymes. The purpose of the current study was to standardize reaction parameters for the optimal synthesis of geranyl butyrate using the best chosen black cumin seedling lipase in an organic medium through direct esterification reactions. Geranyl butyrate and citronellyl butyrate esters were identified, quantified through gas chromatography, confirmed through GC-MS, and partiallypurified through the distillation process. Effect of organic solvents (acetonitrile, n-hexane, pentane, heptane, and toluene), alcohol and acid concentrations (0.125–0.3 M), temperature (20–50°C), incubation time (1–72 h), and enzyme concentrations (0.05–0.3 g) were studied on the synthesis of geranyl butyrate using black cumin seedling lipase. The highest conversion yields of ester (96%) were obtained when 0.25 M of geraniol and butyric acid were reacted at 37°C for 48 h in the presence of 0.25 g of crude seedling lipase enzyme in n-hexane. It was concluded that the germinated black cumin seedling lipase proved to be the best among the selected biocatalysts for the synthesis of geranyl butyrate in n-hexane.

Abstract
Naringin, one of the citrus flavonoids and known as a natural antioxidant, has limited bioavailability owing to its low stability and solubility. However, naringin esters formed via acylation have recently been reported to possess improved physical and chemical properties. The development of these compounds has a great potential in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, but low conversion and productivity are barriers to industrial applications. This study aimed to improve the conversion of naringin acetate, which is formed via the enzymatic reaction between naringin and an acyl donor. An optimal reaction condition was determined by evaluating the effect of various variables (enzyme type, enzyme concentration, acyl donor, molar ratio of reactants, reaction temperature, and solvent) on the synthesis of naringin acetate. The optimal condition was as follows: 3 g/L of Lipozyme TL IM, molar ratio of 1:5 (naringin:acyl donor), reaction temperature of 40 °C, and acetonitrile as the reaction solvent. Under this condition, the maximum conversion to naringin acetate from acetic anhydride and vinyl acetate was achieved at approximately 98.5% (8 h) and 97.5% (24 h), respectively. Compared to the previously reported values, a high conversion was achieved within a short time, confirming the commercial potential of the process.

Abstract
Naringin is a flavonoid found in citrus fruits. It exhibits biological activities, such as anticancer and antioxidant effects, but it suffers from low solubility and low stability in lipophilic systems. These drawbacks lead to difficulties in the commercial application of naringin, but they can be overcome through esterification. In this study, naringin oleate was synthesized by enzymatic esterification and optimal conditions for the reaction were investigated. Experiments were conducted focusing on the following parameters: enzyme type, enzyme concentration, molar ratio of naringin to oleic acid, reaction temperature, and reaction solvent. We further confirmed the degree of esterification based on the difference in the initial and the final naringin concentrations. A conversion of 93.10% was obtained under optimized conditions (Lipozyme TL IM 10 g/L, molar ratio 1:20, reaction temperature 40 °C, acetonitrile as solvent, and 48 h reaction time). Thus, naringin oleate, a high value-added material that overcomes the low hydrophobicity of naringin and enhances its performance, was obtained through esterification of naringin using oleic acid. This study presented a method for the efficient enzymatic synthesis that could ensure high conversion within a shorter reaction time compared with that required in previously reported methods.

Abstract
The conventional flavor synthesis method suffers from low yields, time inefficiency, and extreme reaction conditions. Therefore, there is a necessity for the green and novel synthesis approach to overcome these limitations. The current review presents a holistic insight into different aspects associated with the synthesis of flavor esters using the immobilized enzyme. The application of process intensification tools such as ultrasound and microwave irradiation can enhance the reaction efficiency because of higher product recovery, less formation of by-products, and decreased energy consumption. This review presents the process intensification of value-added flavor esters synthesis and the mechanism of ultrasound and microwave action on the enzyme to enhance the enzyme activity and increase the reaction rate. It also summarizes the role of process intensification in enzymatic flavor ester synthesis, followed by specific examples as reported in the literature.

Abstract
Covering: 2015 up to July 2021The market for cosmetics is consumer driven and the desire for green, sustainable and natural ingredients is increasing. The use of isolated enzymes and whole-cell organisms to synthesise these products is congruent with these values, especially when combined with the use of renewable, recyclable or waste feedstocks. The literature of biocatalysis for the synthesis of ingredients in cosmetics in the past five years is herein reviewed.

Abstract
Vanillyl alcohol (VA), which is abundant in Vanilla bean, has strong antioxidant activity. However, the use of VA in the food and cosmetics industries is limited, due to its low solubility in emulsion or organic solvents. Meanwhile, medium chain fatty acids and medium chain monoglycerides have antibacterial activity. We synthesized butyric acid vanillyl ester (BAVE) or caprylic acid vanillyl ester (CAVE) from VA with tributyrin or tricaprylin through transesterification reaction using immobilized lipases. BAVE and CAVE scavenged 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals in organic solvents. In addition, BAVE and CAVE decreased the production rate of conjugated diene and triene in the menhaden oil-in-water emulsion system. While BAVE showed no antibacterial activity, CAVE showed antibacterial activity against food spoilage bacteria, including Bacillus coagulans. In this study, the antibacterial activity of vanillyl ester with medium chain fatty acid was first revealed. Zeta potential measurements confirmed that BAVE and CAVE were inserted into B. coagulans membrane. In addition, the propidium iodide uptake assay and fluorescent microscopy showed that CAVE increased B. coagulans membrane permeability. Therefore, CAVE is expected to play an important role in the food and cosmetics industries as a bi-functional material with both antioxidant and antibacterial activities.
