Free-Radical Bulk-Photopolymerization Process as a Method of Obtaining Thermally Curable Structural Self-Adhesive Tapes and Effect of Used Type I Photoinitiators

Influence of Methacrylate and Vinyl Monomers on Radical Bulk Photopolymerization Process and Properties of Epoxy-Acrylate Structural Adhesives

In this paper, epoxy-acrylate structural adhesives tapes (SATs) were obtained from Bisphenol A-based liquid epoxy resin and epoxy acrylic resins (EARs). A new method of EARs preparation, i.e., the free radical bulk photopolymerization process (FRBP), was studied in detail. The influence of methacrylic monomers (methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate, (2-acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate) and vinyl monomers (N-vinylpyrrolidone and styrene) on the FRBP process of base monomers (i.e., butyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) was investigated. The kinetics of photopolymerization process was monitored by photo-differential scanning calorimetry method. The properties of the obtained EARs (viscosity and average molecular weights), as well as monomers conversion using ¹H NMR, were determined. It was revealed that styrene significantly decreases the photopolymerization rate and increases the final monomers conversion (+27%). However, the resulting tetrapolymers BA-co-GMA-co-HEA-co-STY have low molecular weights and low polydispersity (2.2). Methacrylate monomers with shorter aliphatic chains (<C₄) also decrease the rate of photopolymerization due to the length of the aliphatic chain increasing. Surprisingly, the best results of adhesion to steel and shear strength were obtained for SAT based on epoxy acrylate resin with styrene (11 N/25 mm and 20.8 MPa, respectively). However, the thermomechanical properties of SAT with styrene were weaker than those with methacrylates.

Self-Crosslinkable Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives from Silicone-(Meth)acrylate Telomer Syrups

In this study, a novel and environmentally friendly method for the preparation of photoreactive pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) was demonstrated. Adhesive binders based on n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, and 4-acryloyloxy benzophenone were prepared with a UV-induced telomerization process in the presence of triethylsilane (TES) as a telogen and acylphosphine oxide (APO) as a radical photoinitiator. The influence of TES (0−10 wt. parts) and APO (0.05−0.1 wt. parts/100 wt. parts of monomer mixtures) concentrations on the UV telomerization process kinetics was investigated using a photodifferential scanning calorimetry method and selected physicochemical features of the obtained silicone-(met)acrylate telomeric syrups (K-value, solid content, glass-transition temperature, and dynamic viscosity), as well as properties of the obtained PSAs (Tg, adhesion, tack, and cohesion), were studied. An increase in TES content caused a significant decrease in the Tg values (approx. 10 °C) and K-value (up to approximately 25 a.u.) of the dry telomers, as well as the dynamic viscosity of the telomeric syrups. PSAs were obtained through UV irradiation of thin polymer films consisting only of silicone-(meth)acrylate telomer solutions (without the use of additional chemical modifiers or of a protective gas atmosphere and protective layers). PSAs were characterized by very good adhesion (12.4 N/25 mm), cohesion at 20 °C (>72 h) and 70 °C (>72 h), and low glass-transition temperature (−25 °C).

Synthesis of Hybrid Epoxy Methacrylate Resin Based on Diglycidyl Ethers and Coatings Preparation via Cationic and Free-Radical Photopolymerization

A series of difunctional epoxy methacrylate resins (EAs) containing at least one epoxy and at least one methacrylate group were synthesized by means of an addition reaction between epoxy-terminated diglycidyl ethers and methacrylic acid. In order to investigate the impact of polymer architecture on the course of addition reactions and further coating properties, several different types of diglycidyl ethers, i.e., linear, containing aliphatic or aromatic rings, with a short or polymeric backbone, were employed in the synthesis. The carboxyl-epoxide addition esterification reactions have been found to, in a relatively straightforward manner, control the extent of acrylation depending on the substrate feed ratio and reaction time. The structure of obtained pre-polymers was evaluated by FT-IR and NMR methods. At the same time, the extent of addition reactions was validated via quantitative analysis, including non-volatile matter content (NV), acid value (PAVs), and epoxy equivalent value (EE) analysis. The modification was carried out in a manner likely to create a compound with one epoxy and one carbon-carbon pendant group. Hence, due to the presence of both functionalities, it is possible to crosslink compositions based on synthesized EAs via two distinct mechanisms: (i) cationic polymerization or (ii) free-radical polymerization. Synthesized epoxy methacrylate pre-polymers were further employed for use in formulate photocurable coating compositions by the cationic or radical process. Furthermore, the photopolymerization behavior and properties of cured coatings were explored regarding some structural factors and parameters. The investigated polymeric materials cure in a short time to obtain coatings with good properties, which is why they can be successfully used to produce protective and decorative coatings for many industries.

New Pressure-Sensitive Acrylic Adhesives for Low Energy Substrates Prepared via UV-Induced Telomerization with a Fluorine-Based Telogen

Novel pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) for low energy substrates were prepared by a solvent-free UV-initiated telomerization process using n-butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, and lauryl methacrylate (LMA), with trifluoroethanol (TFEtOH) as a telogen, and acylphosphine oxide (APO) as a radical photoinitiator. A crosslinking monomer (an aliphatic urethane acrylate, L9033) and a radical UV-photoinitiator (α-hydroxyalkylphenone) were also tested as components of the adhesive compositions. The influence of LMA and TFEtOH on the UV-phototelomerization process kinetics and the physicochemical features of the obtained fluorotelomers, as well as the concentration of L9033 on the PSA adhesion to a polyethylene surface, were investigated. FT-IR results indicated that the fluorine groups were successfully introduced into the telomer structure. The highest adhesion relative to a polyethylene substrate (12.3 N/25 mm), and the highest hydrophobicity (with a contact angle of 95° for a water/PSA system) were observed for adhesives based on a telomer syrup containing 5 wt. parts of TFEtOH and 30 wt. parts of LMA (per 100 wt. parts of the monomer mixture). Additionally, it was revealed that a higher aliphatic urethane acrylate content and a higher UV dose increased the adhesion feature.

Temperature Controlled Mechanical Reinforcement of Polyacrylate Films Containing Nematic Liquid Crystals

This investigation reports on the thermomechanical properties of Poly-tripropyleneglycoldiacrylate (Poly-TPGDA)/liquid crystal (LC) blends, developed via free radical polymerization processes, which are induced by Electron Beam (EB) and Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The EB-cured Poly-TPGDA network exhibits a higher glass transition temperature (T_g), a higher tensile storage, and Young moduli than the corresponding UV-cured sample, indicating a lower elasticity and a shorter distance between the two adjacent crosslinking points. Above T_g of Poly-TPGDA/LC blends, the LC behaves as a plasticizing agent, whereas, for EB-cured networks, at temperatures below T_g, the LC shows a strong temperature dependence on the storage tensile modulus: the LC reinforces the polymer due to the presence of nano-sized phase separated glassy LC domains, confirmed by electron microscopy observations. In the case of the UV-cured TPGDA/LC system, the plasticizing effect of the LC remains dominant in both the whole composition and the temperature ranges explored. The rubber elasticity and T_g of Poly-TPGDA/LC films were investigated using mechanical measurements.

Stereolithography 3D Printing of a Heat Exchanger for Advanced Temperature Control in Wire Myography

We report the additive manufacturing of a heat-exchange device that can be used as a cooling accessory in a wire myograph. Wire myography is used for measuring vasomotor responses in small resistance arteries; however, the commercially available devices are not capable of active cooling. Here, we critically evaluated a transparent resin material, in terms of mechanical, structural, and thermal behavior. Tensile strength tests (67.66 ± 1.31 MPa), Charpy impact strength test (20.70 ± 2.30 kJ/m²), and Shore D hardness measurements (83.0 ± 0.47) underlined the mechanical stability of the material, supported by digital microscopy, which revealed a glass-like structure. Differential scanning calorimetry with thermogravimetry analysis and thermal conductivity measurements showed heat stability until ~250 °C and effective heat insulation. The 3D-printed heat exchanger was tested in thermophysiology experiments measuring the vasomotor responses of rat tail arteries at different temperatures (13, 16, and 36 °C). The heat-exchange device was successfully used as an accessory of the wire myograph system to cool down the experimental chambers and steadily maintain the targeted temperatures. We observed temperature-dependent differences in the vasoconstriction induced by phenylephrine and KCl. In conclusion, the transparent resin material can be used in additive manufacturing of heat-exchange devices for biomedical research, such as wire myography. Our animal experiments underline the importance of temperature-dependent physiological mechanisms, which should be further studied to understand the background of the thermal changes and their consequences.

Structural Adhesives Tapes Based on a Solid Epoxy Resin and Multifunctional Acrylic Telomers

Thermally curable pressure-sensitive structural adhesives tapes (SATs) were compounded using a solid epoxy resin and multifunctional acrylic telomer solutions (MATs) prepared by a thermally initiated telomerization process in an epoxy diluent containing two kinds of telogens (CBr₄ or CBrCl₃). Dynamic viscosity, K-value, and volatile mater content in MATs (i.e., MAT-T with CBr₄, MAT-B with CBrCl₃) were investigated in relation to telogen type and content. The influence of MATs on the self-adhesive features and curing behavior of UV-crosslinked tapes as well as on the shear strength of thermally cured aluminum–SAT–aluminum joints was investigated as well. Increasing the telogen dose (from 5 to 15 wt. parts) caused significant improvement in the adhesion (+315% and +184%), tack (+147% and +298%), and cohesion (+414% and +1716%) of SATs based on MAT-T and MAT-B, respectively. Additionally, MATs with high telogen content (especially the MAT-T-type) improved the resistance of cured joints to aviation fuel, humidity, and elevated temperature. The highest overlap shear strength values were registered for SATs based on MATs containing 7.5 wt. parts of CBr₄ (16.7 MPa) or 10 wt. parts of CBrCl₃ (15.3 MPa).

The Effect of Type-I Photoinitiators on the Kinetics of the UV-Induced Cotelomerization Process of Acrylate Monomers and Properties of Obtained Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives

A new method of solvent-free acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) based on UV-induced cotelomerization products was presented. The key acrylic monomers (i.e., n-butyl acrylate and acrylic acid) with copolymerizable photoinitiator 4-acrylooxybenzophenone in the presence of a selected chain transfer agent (tetrabromomethane, TBM) were used in the UV-cotelomerization process. Moreover, two kinds of UV-photoinitiators (α-hydroxyalkylphenones, HPs and acylphosphine oxides, APOs) were tested. Photo-DSC, viscosity, thermogravimetric, and GPC measurements for cotelomers were performed. The kinetics study revealed that the systems with APOs, especially Omnirad 819 and Omnirad TPO, were characterized by a much higher reaction rate and greater initiation efficiency than HPs systems were. Additionally, the APO-based syrups exhibited a higher solid content (ca. 60–96 wt%), a higher dynamic viscosity (5–185 Pa·s), but slightly lower molecular weights (M_n and M_w) compared to HP syrups. However, better self-adhesive features (i.e., adhesion and tack) were observed for PSAs based on cotelomers syrups obtained using APOs with lower solid contents (55–80 wt%). It was found that as the solids content (i.e., monomers conversion) increased the adhesion, the tack and glass transition temperature decreased and the type and amount of photoinitiator had no effect on polydispersity. Most of the obtained PSAs were characterized by excellent cohesion, both at 20 °C and 70 °C.

Novel Multifunctional Epoxy (Meth)Acrylate Resins and Coatings Preparation via Cationic and Free-Radical Photopolymerization

In this work, a series of novel multifunctional epoxy (meth)acrylate resins based on a low-viscosity aliphatic triepoxide triglycidyl ether of trimethylolethane (TMETGE) and acrylic acid (AA) or methacrylic acid (MMA) have been synthesized. Thanks to the performed modification, the obtained prepolymers have both epoxides as well as carbon–carbon double bonds and differ in their amount. The obtained results indicate that the carboxyl-epoxide addition esterification occurs in the presence of a catalyst (triphenylphosphine) at a temperature of 90 °C, whilst the required degree of conversion can be achieved simply by varying both the reagents ratio and reaction time. The structure of synthesized copolymers was confirmed by spectroscopic analyses (FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR) and studied regarding its nonvolatile matter content (NV), acid value (PAVs), as well as its epoxy equivalent value (EE). Due to the presence of both epoxy and double carbon–carbon pendant groups, one can apply two distinct mechanisms: (i) cationic ring-opening polymerization or (ii) free-radical polymerization to crosslink polymer chains. Synthesized epoxy (meth)acrylate prepolymers were further employed to formulate photocurable coating compositions. Hence, when cationic photoinitiators were applied, polyether-type polymer chains with pending acrylate or methacrylate groups were formed. In the case of free-radical polymerization, epoxy (meth)acrylates certainly formed a poly(meth)acrylate backbone with pending epoxy groups. Further, photopolymerization behavior and properties of cured coatings were investigated regarding some structural factors and parameters. Moreover, reaction rate coefficients of photo-cross-linking by both cationic ring-opening and free-radical photopolymerization of the received epoxy (meth)acrylate resins were determined via real-time infrared spectroscopy (RT-IR). Lastly, basic physicomechanical properties, such as tack-free time, hardness, adhesion, gloss, and yellowness index of cured coatings, were evaluated.

UV Polymerization of Methacrylates-Preparation and Properties of Novel Copolymers

More environmentally friendly polymeric materials for use in corrosive conditions were obtained in the process of UV polymerization of terpene methacrylate monomers: geranyl methacrylate and citronellyl methacrylate and the commercially available monomer methyl methacrylate. Selected properties (solvent resistance, chemical resistance, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, and decomposition course during heating) were evaluated. It was found that the properties of the materials directly depended on the monomer percentage and the conditioning temperatures used. An increase in the geranyl or citronellyl methacrylate monomer content in the copolymers reduced the solubility and chemical resistance of the materials post-cured at 50 °C. The samples post-cured at 120 °C were characterized by high resistance to polar and non-polar solvents and the chemical environment, regardless of the percentage composition. The glass transition temperatures for samples conditioned at 120 °C increased with increasing content of methyl methacrylate in the copolymers. The thermal stability of copolymers depended on the conditioning temperatures used. It was greater than 200 °C for most copolymers post-cured at 120 °C. The process of pyrolysis of copolymers led to the emission of geranyl methacrylate, citronellyl methacrylate, and methyl methacrylate monomers as the main pyrolysis volatiles.

Epoxy-Based Structural Self-Adhesive Tapes Modified with Acrylic Syrups Prepared via a Free Radical Photopolymerization Process

New modifiers (i.e., acrylic syrups; ASs) of epoxy-resin-based thermally curable structural self-adhesive tapes (SATs) were prepared via a free radical bulk polymerization (FRBP) of n-butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, and hydroxybutyl acrylate. In the process, two kinds of UV-photoinitiators (i.e., monoacylphosphine oxide/Omnirad TPO and bisacylphosphine oxide/Omnirad 819) and various mixing speed of the monomers mixture (200–1000 rpm) were applied. The TPO-based syrups exhibited a lower copolymers content (10–24 wt%), dynamic viscosity (<0.1 Pa·s), molecular weights (M_n and M_w, and polydispersity (1.9–2.5) than these with Omnirad 819. Additionally, the higher mixing speed significantly reduced monomers conversion and viscosity of ASs as well as molecular weights of the acrylate copolymers. These parameters influenced the properties of thermally uncured (e.g., adhesion) and thermally cured SATs (shear strength of aluminum/SAT/aluminum overlap joints). Better self-adhesive features were observed for SATs-TPO (based on ASs with lower monomers conversion, M_n and M_w); however, a slightly higher shear strength was noted for the thermally cured SAT-819 (ASs with higher monomers conversion, M_n and M_w). An impact of polydispersity of the acrylate copolymers as well as crosslinking degree of thermally cured SATs on the mechanical strength was also revealed.
