Investigation of the Effects of Adsorbed Water on Adhesion Energy and Nanostructure of Asphalt and Aggregate Surfaces Based on Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Influence of chloride salt erosion on the adhesion of asphalt-aggregate interfaces considering mineral anisotropy: insights from molecular dynamics

CONTEXT

Asphalt, a polymer mixture composed of various hydrocarbons, is extensively utilized due to its excellent performance. To evaluate the sensitivity of asphalt concrete to chloride salt damage at the nanoscale, considering the anisotropy of aggregate mineral crystal orientation, molecular dynamic simulations were employed to model the interface interactions between asphalt and aggregate mineral components (silica and calcite) under chloride salt exposure. The wetting processes of water droplets and chloride salt droplets on different crystal surfaces of silica and calcite were analyzed. Furthermore, the adhesive energy, decohesion energy, degradation ratio, and energy ratio of the interaction model between asphalt and aggregate mineral interfaces were analyzed to reveal the variations in the interfaces between the two components. The results demonstrated that the anisotropy of the minerals significantly affects the adhesion energy of asphalt and aggregate. Moreover, the surface hydrophilicity of calcite was larger than that of silica. The interfacial adhesion energy of asphalt-calcite was larger than that of asphalt-silica under dry condition and chloride salt attack, and the interfacial adhesion energy of both asphalt and mineral decreased with the increase of chloride salt concentration. The degradation ratio and energy ratio values of asphalt and calcite were larger than those of asphalt and silica, and the anisotropy of the mineral surface affected the degradation ratio and energy ratio values. This study provides a new method and theoretical basis for further research on the damage mechanism and strengthening measures of asphalt-aggregate under chloride salt attack.

METHODS

To investigate the interaction between asphalt and mineral aggregates under chloride salt erosion, models of asphalt, aggregate, and asphalt/aggregate composite systems were constructed using the Amorphous Cell module in Materials Studio 2020 software. Molecular dynamic simulations of the asphalt/aggregate composite system were then conducted using the Forcite module, employing the COMPASS II force field to describe atomic and molecular interactions. Initially, considering the crystal orientation and surface configuration of the aggregate minerals, the impact of mineral anisotropy on the asphalt-aggregate interface model was analyzed. Subsequently, by simulating the contact states of nano water droplets and chloride salt droplets with different mineral surfaces, the wetting characteristics of nano water droplets on silica and calcite surfaces were determined. Lastly, considering the corrosion effect of chloride solution at different concentrations, the adhesion energy, debonding energy, degradation ratio, and energy ratio of the asphalt-aggregate interface interaction model were analyzed.

Microscopically analyzed interface behavior characteristics of acid precipitation on asphalt surface

It is generally believed that the interaction between acid precipitation and asphalt has an effect on the performance of drainage asphalt pavement, but studies on the interface behavior characteristics from microscopic analysis are rare. Therefore, molecular dynamics (MD) was used to simulate the interfacial transition zone of precipitation (neutral and acid) and asphalt in the study, and the interfacial behavior characteristics of precipitation on asphalt surface were microscopically analyzed. Additionally, the composition of acid precipitation was configured in the laboratory, and the contact angles of precipitation solutions (SO₄^2- and NO₃^-) on asphalt surface also verified the interface behavior characteristics between acid precipitation and asphalt. The results showed that the interaction of acid precipitation and asphalt is stronger than that of neutral precipitation, which makes it more difficult to remove from the surface of drainage asphalt pavement. With the increase of service temperature for drainage asphalt pavement, the interaction energy increases. Under the coupling effect of acid precipitation and low service temperature, water damage to the drainage asphalt pavement is more easily induced. The results revealed the micro-effect of acid precipitation and service temperature on drainage efficiency of an asphalt surface, which has certain theoretical significance and practical value for the application and exploration of drainage asphalt pavement.

Analysis of Interface Fusion Effect between Old and New Asphalt under Plant Mixing and Cold Recycling Mode Based on Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Road construction consumes a lot of resources and produces a lot of waste and other pollutants. With the emergence of a resource and energy crisis, how to make efficient use of rap has become the research focus of scientific researchers. The interface fusion effect of old and new asphalt in plant mixing and cooling recycling mode is analyzed in order to improve the utilization rate of old asphalt in reclaimed asphalt pavement. In this paper, Materials Studio software was used to establish a bitumen model using the method of four components of bitumen, and then the rationality of the model was verified by density, solubility number and atomic radial distribution function, and the diffusion coefficient obtained from the mean square displacement (MSD) was taken as its evaluation index. The results showed that the diffusion model tends to be stable after 20 ps, and the degree of diffusion increases with the increase in temperature. The degree of diffusion of new asphalt to old asphalt and the degree of diffusion of old asphalt to new asphalt are basically very similar; however, there are some differences at different temperatures. Only a small part of the surface contact between old and new asphalt has been fused, which accords with the partial fusion theory. Compared with Panjin 90# asphalt, the diffusion coefficient of Zhonghaiyou asphalt increases faster with the increase in temperature. The diffusion coefficient increases by 64.3% with the increase of the content of rejuvenators after adding different rejuvenators into the new asphalt. Clarifying the interface fusion effect will be helpful to guide the optimization design of cold-mixing recycled asphalt mixture more scientifically and reasonably. Future research should focus on increasing the fusion effect of old and new asphalt, and explore its influence on the conventional road performance of asphalt mixture.

The Bonding Mechanism of the Micro-Interface of Polymer Coated Steel

As food and beverages require more and more green and safe packaging products, the emergence of polymer coated steel (PCS) has been promoted. PCS is a layered composite strip made of metal and polymer. To probe the bonding mechanism of PCS micro-interface, the substrate tin-free steel (TFS) was physically characterized by SEM and XPS, and cladding polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was simulated by first-principles methods of quantum mechanics (QM). We used COMPASS force field for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. XPS pointed out that the element composition of TFS surface coating is Cr(OH)₃, Cr₂O₃ and CrO₃. The calculation results of MD and QM indicate that the chromium oxide and PET molecules compound in the form of acid-base interaction. The binding energies of Cr₂O₃ (110), (200), and (211) with PET molecules are -13.07 eV, -2.74 eV, and -2.37 eV, respectively. We established a Cr₂O₃ (200) model with different hydroxyl concentrations. It is proposed that the oxygen atom in C=O in the PET molecule combines with -OH on the surface of TFS to form a hydrogen bond. The binding energy of the PCS interface increases with the increase of the surface hydroxyl concentration of the TFS. It provides theoretical guidance and reference significance for the research on the bonding mechanism of PCS.
