The Transferability and Design of Commercial Printer Settings in PLA/PBAT Fused Filament Fabrication

Compatibilizing Biodegradable Poly(lactic acid)/polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate Blends via Reactive Graphene Oxide for Screw-Based 3D Printing

Vinyl-functionalized graphene oxide (VGO) was used as a reactive compatibilizer to prepare poly(lactic acid)/polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PLA/PBAT) blends. The linear rheological and scanning electron microscopy results confirmed that the VGO nanosheets were quite efficient in compatibilizing PLA/PBAT blends. The size of the PBAT dispersed phase was remarkably decreased in the presence of VGO nanosheets. Moreover, the VGO nanosheets exhibited strong nucleating effects on the crystallization process of PLA. The crystallinity of PLA component in the compatibilized blend with various VGO nanosheets was higher than 40%, upon the cooling rate of 20 °C/min. The prepared PLA/PBAT pellets were applied to 3D printing, using a self-developed screw-based 3D printer. The results showed that all the prepared PLA/PBAT blend pellets can be 3D printed successfully. The notched Izod impact test results showed that, in the presence of VGO, an increase of at least 142% in impact strength was achieved for PLA/PBAT blend. This could be attributed to the compatibilizing effect of the VGO nanosheets. Thus, this work provides a novel way to prepare tough PLA-based materials for 3D printing.

Excellent Characteristics of Environmentally Friendly 3D-Printed Nasopharyngeal Swabs for Medical Sample Collection

3D-printed nasopharyngeal swabs for medical sample collection have been manufactured via additive manufacturing (AM), evaluated, and characterized in the present study. A multi-part component of nasopharyngeal swabs was proposed, in which the swab and handle were manufactured separately to reach sustainable production and environmentally friendly products. The swab was investigated using tensile, flexural, surface roughness, dimensional accuracy, and sample collection testing. The influence of printing parameters and post-curing time treatment on the mechanical properties, surface roughness, and dimensional accuracy of 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swabs were also evaluated. The result showed that 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swab shows outstanding tensile strength compared to the commercial flock nasopharyngeal swab. Moreover, the swab neck flexibility test showed that both PLA and dental non-castable 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swabs were able to bend 180°. Subsequently, the surface roughness of 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swab was identic with the commercial flock nasopharyngeal swab. The proposed 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swab design could carry an artificial mucus sample of 141.6 mg at a viscosity of 9455.4 mPa.s. The cost to fabricate a 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swab was estimated at USD0.01-0.02 per swab. 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swab shows potential as a feasible option, greener, less medical waste, and more sustainable.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Physical Properties of Maleic Acid-Grafted Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/Cellulose Nanocrystal Composites

New sequences of nanocomposites including numerous maleic acid-grafted poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (g-PBAT) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were efficaciously fabricated via transesterification and polycondensation processes with the covalent bonds between the polymer and reinforcing fillers. The grafting interaction of maleic acid onto PBAT was successfully demonstrated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ¹³C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The morphology of g-PBAT/CNC nanocomposites was investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Both results indicate that the CNC was randomly dispersed into the g-PBAT polymer matrix. The storage modulus at −80 and 25 °C was significantly enhanced with the incorporation of CNC into g-PBAT matrix. The crystallization rate of g-PBAT/CNC nanocomposites increased as the loading of CNC increased. With the incorporation of 3 wt% CNC, the half-time for crystallization of the g-PBAT/CNC composite decreased about 50~80% as compared with the same isothermal crystallization of pure polymer matrix. All water vapor permeation (WVP) values of all g-PBAT/CNC nanocomposites decreased as the loading of CNC increased. The decrease in WVP may be attributed to the addition of stiff CNC, causing the increase on the permeation route in the water molecules in the g-PBAT polymer matrix.

Tuning Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Polydimethylsiloxane with Carbon Fibers

In order to meet the needs of constantly advancing technologies, fabricating materials with improved properties and predictable behavior has become vital. To that end, we have prepared polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer samples filled with carbon nanofibers (CFs) at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 CF loadings (w/w) to investigate and optimize the amount of filler needed for fabrication with improved mechanical properties. Samples were prepared using easy, cost-efficient mechanical mixing to combine the PDMS and CF filler and were then characterized by chemical (FTIR), mechanical (hardness and tension), and physical (swelling, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and coefficient of thermal expansion) analyses to determine the material properties. We found that hardness and thermal stability increased predictably, while the ultimate strength and toughness both decreased. Repeated tension caused the CF-filled PDMS samples to lose significant toughness with increasing CF loadings. The hardness and thermal degradation temperature with 4 wt.% CF loading in PDMS increased more than 40% and 25 °C, respectively, compared with the pristine PDMS sample. Additionally, dilatometer measurements showed a 20% decrease in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) with a small amount of CF filler in PDMS. In this study, we were able to show the mechanical and thermal properties of PDMS can be tuned with good confidence using CFs.
