Ti2CTx MXene as a Saturable Absorber for Passively Q-Switched Solid-State Lasers

VTe2: Broadband Saturable Absorber for Passively Q-Switched Lasers in the Near- and Mid-Infrared Regions

In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of a novel 2D transition metal dichalcogenide, VTe2, into a saturable absorber (SA) by using the liquid phase exfoliation method. Furthermore, the first-principles calculations were conducted to elucidate the electronic band structures and absorption spectrum. The nonlinear optical absorption properties of VTe2 at 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 μm were measured using open-aperture Z-scan and P-scan methods, which showed saturation intensities and modulation depths of 95.57 GW/cm2 and 9.24%, 3.11 GW/cm2 and 7.26%, and 15.8 MW/cm2 and 17.1%, respectively. Furthermore, in the realm of practical implementation, the achievement of stable passively Q-switched (PQS) lasers employing SA composed of few-layered VTe2 nanosheets has manifested itself with broadband operating wavelengths from 1.0 to ∼3.0 μm. Specifically, PQS laser operations from near-infrared to mid-infrared with pulse durations of 195 and 563 ns for 1.0 and 2.0 μm solid-state lasers, respectively, and 749 ns for an Er3+-doped fluoride fiber laser at 3.0 μm were obtained. Our experimental results demonstrate that VTe2 is a potential broadband SA device for achieving PQS lasers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of using VTe2 as an SA in PQS lasers in the near- and mid-infrared regions, which highlights the potential of VTe2 for future research and applications in optoelectronic devices.

Passively Q-switched single crystal fiber pulsed laser at 1.05 µm with T3C2Tx as the saturable absorber

In this paper, Ti₃C₂T_x MXene prepared by LiF/HCl etching method was spin-coated on glass substrate and sapphire substrate as the saturable absorber (SA), and the MXene SA is combined with Yb: LuAG single crystal fiber (SCF) for the first time to achieve a 1.05 µm passively Q-switched pulsed laser output with the average power, pulse width, and repetition frequency of 1.989 W, 149.6 ns, and 365.44 kHz, respectively, which is the highest average power ever reported for passively Q-switched SCF pulsed lasers. This work enriches the research on SCF pulsed lasers and provides a feasible approach for achieving high-power all-solid-state pulsed lasers.

Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of Ta2NiS5 and Its Application in Near-Infrared Mode-Locked Fiber Lasers with Evanescent Field Interactions and Passively Q-Switched Bulk Laser

We report on the application of a 1 μm solid-state passively Q-switched (PQS) laser and 1, 1.5 μm mode-locked (ML) fiber lasers based on ternary chalcogenide Ta2NiS5 saturable absorber (SA), which were successfully fabricated by liquid-phase exfoliation method (LPE). The nonlinear absorption of the Ta2NiS5-SA was characterized by 0.32 GW/cm2 and 0.25 GW/cm2 saturation intensities with 7.3% and 5.1% modulations depths at 1 μm and 1.5 μm, respectively. A PQS solid-state laser operating at 1.0 μm has been realized with the Ta2NiS5-SA. The maximum average output power, shortest pulse width, pulse energy, and pulse peak power from the PQS laser are 0.257 W, 180 ns, 1.265 μJ, and 7 W. Moreover, highly stable femtosecond laser centered at 1.5 μm, and picosecond centered at 1 μm, ML fiber lasers were obtained using the Ta2NiS5-SA. A 70 dB signal-to-noise ML laser with a pulse duration of 781 fs was observed in the telecommunication window, which is better than the duration of the previously reported lasers based on Ta2NiS5. The corresponding maximum single pulse energy and peak power are 0.977 nJ and 1251 W, respectively. The Ta2NiS5-SA fabricated by the LPE method was applied in near-infrared (NIR) ML fiber lasers (evanescent field interactions) and PQS bulk lasers. The results indicate that Ta2NiS5-SA prepared by the LPE method can be applied in a 1 μm bulk PQS laser and improved by the new combination mode (evanescent field interactions) for better output performance of the fiber laser.

High Power and Large-Energy Pulse Generation in an Erbium-Doped Fiber Laser by a Ferromagnetic Insulator-Cr2Si2Te6 Saturable Absorber

Large-energy mode-locked fiber lasers are extensively studied due to their indispensable use in various fields and applications. Recently, ferromagnetic insulators have attracted tremendous research interest in ultra-fast photonics because of their unique ferromagnetic properties and typical layered structure. In our work, Cr2Si2Te6 nanosheets are prepared and utilized as a saturable absorber (SA) in a large-energy mode-locked erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser. With a total cavity length of 240 m, a stable mode-locked operation characterized by maximum pulse energy as high as 244.76 nJ with a repetition rate of 847.64 kHz is achieved. When the cavity length is extended to 390 m, the output maximum pulse energy is successfully scaled up to 325.50 nJ. To our knowledge, this is the largest pulse energy and highest output power level to be achieved in mode-locked fiber lasers by two-dimensional (2D) material saturable absorbers (SAs) so far. This work not only makes a forward step to the investigation of the generation of large-energy pulses in mode-locked fiber lasers but also fully proves that the ferromagnetic insulator-Cr2Si2Te6 possesses an excellent nonlinear absorption property, antioxidant capacity in ambient conditions, as well as outstanding thermal stability, which enriches our insight into 2D materials.

Investigation of Nonlinear Optical Modulation Characteristics of MXene VCrC for Pulsed Lasers

We report the surface morphology and the nonlinear absorption characteristics of MXene VCrC nanosheets prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method. The self-made MXene VCrC was applied as a saturable absorber in the Tm:YAP laser experiments, performing excellent Q-switching optical modulation characteristics in infrared range. With this absorber, a stable passively Q-switched 2 μm laser was achieved. Under an incident pump power of 3.52 W, a maximum output power of 280 mW was obtained with a T = 3% output coupler at a repetition frequency of 49 kHz. The corresponding pulse energy and peak power were 5.7 μJ and 6.6 W, respectively. The shortest pulse duration was 658 ns at the repetition rate of 63 kHz with a T = 1% output coupler.

MXenes: synthesis, incorporation, and applications in ultrafast lasers

The rapid expansion of nanotechnology and material science prompts two-dimensional (2D) materials to be extensively used in biomedicine, optoelectronic devices, and ultrafast photonics. Owing to the broadband operation, ultrafast recovery time, and saturable absorption properties, 2D materials become the promising candidates for being saturable absorbers in ultrafast pulsed lasers. In recent years, the novel 2D MXene materials have occupied the forefront due to their superior optical and electronic, as well as mechanical and chemical properties. Herein, we introduce the fabrication methods of MXenes, incorporation methods of combining 2D materials with laser cavities, and applications of ultrafast pulsed lasers based on MXenes. Firstly, top-down and bottom-up approaches are two types of fabrication methods, where top-down way mainly contains acid etching and the chief way of bottom-up method is chemical vapor deposition. In addition to these two typical ones, other methods are also discussed. Then we summarize the advantages and drawbacks of these approaches. Besides, commonly used incorporation methods, such as sandwich structure, optical deposition, as well as coupling with D-shaped, tapered, and photonic crystal fibers are reviewed. We also discuss their merits, defects, and conditions of selecting different methods. Moreover, we introduce the state of the art of ultrafast pulsed lasers based on MXenes at different wavelengths and highlight some excellent output performance. Ultimately, the outlook for improving fabrication methods and applications of MXene-based ultrafast lasers is presented.

MXene/Graphene Oxide Heterojunction as a Saturable Absorber for Passively Q-Switched Solid-State Pulse Lasers

Owing to their unique characteristics, two-dimensional (2-D) materials and their complexes have become very attractive in photoelectric applications. Two-dimensional heterojunctions, as novel 2-D complex materials, have drawn much attention in recent years. Herein, we propose a 2-D heterojunction composed of MXene (Ti₂CT_x) materials and graphene oxide (GO), and apply it to an Nd:YAG solid-state laser as a saturable absorber (SA) for passive Q-switching. Our results suggest that a nano-heterojunction between MXene and GO was achieved based on morphological characterization, and the advantages of a broadband response, higher stability in GO, and strong interaction with light waves in MXene could be combined. In the passively Q-switched laser study, the single-pulse energy was measured to be approximately 0.79 µJ when the pump power was 3.72 W, and the corresponding peak power was approximately 7.25 W. In addition, the generation of a stable ultrashort pulse down to 109 ns was demonstrated, which is the narrowest pulse among Q-switched solid-state lasers using a 2-D heterojunction SA. Our work indicates that the MXene–GO nano-heterojunction could operate as a promising SA for ultrafast systems with ultrahigh pulse energy and ultranarrow pulse duration. We believe that this work opens up a new approach to designing 2-D heterojunctions and provides insight into the formation of new 2-D materials with desirable photonic properties.
