A Novel Method of Self-Cross-Linking of Syringaldehyde with Activated Methoxy Groups via Cross-Coupling for Lignin-Based Wood Adhesives

As steric hindrance, methoxy groups are limiting the valorization of hardwood lignin. This paper reports a novel method of self-cross-linking of the syringaldehyde with activated methoxy groups (-OCH3) via cross-coupling reaction to obtain thermosetting polymers for lignin-based wood adhesives. The methoxy groups of syringaldehyde have been activated via cross-coupling reaction by substituting Ar-OCH3 with Ar-CH2-SiMe3, and dichloromethane, leading to cross-linking via methylene bridges to build a thermosetting polymer. FTIR spectra showed a decrease in the intensity of a -CH3 and -OH group, owing to the substitution of the methoxy group. 13C NMR spectra also supported these results with the -SiMe3 signal that disappeared after the cross-linking reaction. Furthermore, cross-linking between the activated methoxy groups was confirmed with a strong exothermic peak at 130 °C, resulting in an increase in the adhesion strength as hot-pressing temperature increased from 160 to 180 °C. These results suggest that the cross-linking between the activated methoxy groups of syringaldehyde is an important understanding of valorizing hardwood lignin via building thermosetting polymers for lignin-based adhesives.

Ce-Zr-based mixed oxide catalyst for oxidative depolymerization of kenaf stalk (biomass) into vanillin

Since petroleum became depleted, rapid attention has been devoted to renewable energy sources such as lignocellulosic biomass to produce useful chemicals for industry (for instance vanillin). Three primary components of lignocellulose are lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. This paper uses microwave-assisted technology to oxidize the kenaf stalk (lignocellulosic biomass) and extract lignin to produce vanillin. Catalysts with variable acid-base and redox properties are essential for the mentioned effective conversion, for this reason, CeO2-CA, ZrO2-CA, and CeZrO2-CA catalysts were synthesized. The citrate complexation method was used for the catalyst synthesis and the physicochemical characteristics were analyzed by XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM, TEM, BET, and TPO. The characterization results demonstrated that CeZrO2-CA shows the smallest sized crystallites with a large specific surface area among the other chosen catalysts. For vanillin production, the effect of reaction temperature, reaction time, and catalyst loading was studied. It was observed that compared to other catalysts, CeZrO2-CA produced the highest vanillin yield of 9.90% for kenaf stalk for 5 wt% of CeZrO2-CA at 160 °C for 30 min. Furthermore, vanillin production using extracted lignin is studied keeping CeZrO2-CA as a catalyst and with the same operating parameters, which yielded 14.3% of vanillin. Afterward, the change in yield with respect to pH is also presented. Finally, the recyclability of catalyst is also studied, which showed that it has a strong metal support and greater stability which may give industrial applications a significant boost.

A Series of Green Oxovanadium(IV) Precatalysts with O, N and S Donor Ligands in a Sustainable Olefins Oligomerization Process

Designing catalyst systems based on transition metal ions and activators using the principles of green chemistry is a fundamental research goal of scientists due to the reduction of poisonous solvents, metal salts and organic ligands released into the environment. Urgent measures to reduce climate change are in line with the goals of sustainable development and the new restrictive laws ordained by the European Union. In this report, we attempted to use known oxovanadium(IV) green complex compounds with O, N and S donor ligands, i.e., [VO(TDA)phen] • 1.5 H₂O (TDA = thiodiacetate), (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), oxovanadium(IV) microclusters with 2-phenylpyridine (oxovanadium(IV) cage), [VOO(dipic)(2-phepyH)] • H₂O (dipic = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate anion), (2-phepyH = 2-phenylpyridine), [VO(dipic)(dmbipy)] • 2H₂O (dmbipy = 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-dipyridyl) and [VO(ODA)(bipy)] • 2 H₂O (ODA = oxydiacetate), (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine), as precatalysts in oligomerization reactions of 3-buten-2-ol, 2-propen-1-ol, 2-chloro-2-propen-1-ol and 2,3-dibromo-2-propen-1-ol. The precatalysts, in most cases, turned out to be highly active because the catalytic activity exceeded 1000 g mmol^-1·h^-1. In addition, the oligomers were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI-TOF-MS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques.
