A Bibliometric Analysis of the Global Trend of Using Alginate, Gelatine, and Hydroxyapatite for Bone Tissue Regeneration Applications

3D bioprinting technology to construct bone reconstruction research model and its feasibility evaluation

Objective: To explore and construct a 3D bone remodeling research model displaying stability, repeatability, and precise simulation of the physiological and biochemical environment in vivo. Methods: In this study, 3D bioprinting was used to construct a bone reconstruction model. Sodium alginate (SA), hydroxyapatite (HA) and gelatin (Gel) were mixed into hydrogel as scaffold material. The osteoblast precursor cells MC3T3-E1 and osteoclast precursor cells RAW264.7 were used as seed cells, which may or may not be separated by polycarbonate membrane. The cytokines osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) were used to induce cell differentiation. The function of scaffolds in the process of bone remodeling was analyzed by detecting the related markers of osteoblasts (alkaline phosphatase, ALP) and osteoclasts (tartrate resistant acid phosphatase, TRAP). Results: The scaffold showed good biocompatibility and low toxicity. The surface morphology aided cell adhesion and growth. The scaffold had optimum degradability, water absorption capacity and porosity, which are in line with the conditions of biological experiments. The effect of induced differentiation of cells was the best when cultured alone. After direct contact between the two types of cells at 2D or 3D level, the induced differentiation of cells was inhibited to varying degrees, although they still showed osteogenesis and osteoclast. After the cells were induced by indirect contact culture, the effect of induced differentiation improved when compared with direct contact culture, although it was still not as good as that of single culture. On the whole, the effect of inducing differentiation at 3D level was the same as that at 2D level, and its relative gene expression and enzyme activity were higher than that in the control group. Hence the scaffold used in this study could induce osteogenesis as well as osteoclast, thereby rendering it more effective in inducing new bone formation. Conclusion: This method can be used to construct the model of 3D bone remodeling mechanism.

Horizon Scanning in Tissue Engineering Using Citation Network Analysis

BACKGROUND

Establishing a horizon scanning method is critical for identifying technologies that require new guidelines or regulations. We studied the application of bibliographic citation network analysis to horizon scanning.

OBJECTIVE

The possibility of applying the proposed method to interdisciplinary fields was investigated with the emphasis on tissue engineering and its example, three-dimensional bio-printing.

METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS

In all, 233,968 articles on tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, biofabrication, and additive manufacturing published between January 1, 1900 and November 3, 2021 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. The citation network of the articles was analyzed for confirmation that the evolution of 3D bio-printing is reflected by tracking the key articles in the field. However, the results revealed that the major articles on the clinical application of 3D bio-printed products are located in clusters other than that of 3D bio-printers. We investigated the research trends in this field by analyzing the articles published between 2019 and 2021 and detected various basic technologies constituting tissue engineering, including microfluidics and scaffolds such as electrospinning and conductive polymers. The results suggested that the research trend of technologies required for product development and future clinical applications of the product are sometimes detected independently by bibliographic citation network analysis, particularly for interdisciplinary fields.

CONCLUSION

This method can be applied to the horizon scanning of an interdisciplinary field. However, identifying basic technologies of the targeted field and following the progress of research and the integration process of each component of technology are critical.

The Studies on Chitosan for Sustainable Development: A Bibliometric Analysis

Chitosan is a biocompatible polymer with vast applications in pharmacology, medicine, paper making, agriculture, and the food industry due to its low toxicity. Chitosan also plays an important role in the sustainable environment since chitosan is able to absorb greenhouse gases, harmful organic matter, and heavy ions. Therefore, this paper conducts a bibliometric analysis of chitosan for sustainable development using the Scopus database from 1976 to 2023. A performance analysis on the 8002 documents was performed with Harzing's Publish or Perish. Science mapping was conducted using VOSviewer. The annual publication on chitosan for sustainable development showed an upward trend in recent years as the annual publication peaked in 2022 with 1178 documents with most of the documents being articles and published in journals. Material science, chemistry, and engineering are tightly related subject areas. China had the highest publication of 1560 total documents while the United States had the most impactful publication with 55,019 total citations, 68.77 citations per document, 77.6 citations per cited document, h-index 110, and g-index of 211. India had the largest international collaboration with 572 total link strength. "International Journal of Biological Macromolecules", "Carbohydrate Polymers", and "Polymers" have been identified as the top three source titles that publish the most documents on chitosan for sustainable development. The emerging trends in chitosan on sustainable development focus on the application of chitosan as an antibacterial agent and biosorbent for contaminants, especially in water treatment.

Bone regeneration materials and their application over 20 years: A bibliometric study and systematic review

Bone regeneration materials (BRMs) bring us new sights into the clinical management bone defects. With advances in BRMs technologies, new strategies are emerging to promote bone regeneration. The aim of this study was to comprehensively assess the existing research and recent progress on BRMs, thus providing useful insights into contemporary research, as well as to explore potential future directions within the scope of bone regeneration therapy. A comprehensive literature review using formal data mining procedures was performed to explore the global trends of selected areas of research for the past 20 years. The study applied bibliometric methods and knowledge visualization techniques to identify and investigate publications based on the publication year (between 2002 and 2021), document type, language, country, institution, author, journal, keywords, and citation number. The most productive countries were China, United States, and Italy. The most prolific journal in the BRM field was Acta Biomaterialia, closely followed by Biomaterials. Moreover, recent investigations have been focused on extracellular matrices (ECMs) (370 publications), hydrogel materials (286 publications), and drug delivery systems (220 publications). Research hotspots related to BRMs and extracellular matrices from 2002 to 2011 were growth factor, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2, and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC), whereas after 2012 were composite scaffolds. Between 2002 and 2011, studies related to BRMs and hydrogels were focused on BMP-2, in vivo, and in vitro investigations, whereas it turned to the exploration of MSCs, mechanical properties, and osteogenic differentiation after 2012. Research hotspots related to BRM and drug delivery were fibroblast growth factor, mesoporous materials, and controlled release during 2002–2011, and electrospinning, antibacterial activity, and in vitro bioactivity after 2012. Overall, composite scaffolds, 3D printing technology, and antibacterial activity were found to have an important intersection within BRM investigations, representing relevant research fields for the future. Taken together, this extensive analysis highlights the existing literature and findings that advance scientific insights into bone tissue engineering and its subsequent applications.

Effect of Hydrogel Contact Angle on Wall Thickness of Artificial Blood Vessel

Vascular replacement is one of the most effective tools to solve cardiovascular diseases, but due to the limitations of autologous transplantation, size mismatch, etc., the blood vessels for replacement are often in short supply. The emergence of artificial blood vessels with 3D bioprinting has been expected to solve this problem. Blood vessel prosthesis plays an important role in the field of cardiovascular medical materials. However, a small-diameter blood vessel prosthesis (diameter < 6 mm) is still unable to achieve wide clinical application. In this paper, a response surface analysis was firstly utilized to obtain the relationship between the contact angle and the gelatin/sodium alginate mixed hydrogel solution at different temperatures and mass percentages. Then, the self-developed 3D bioprinter was used to obtain the optimal printing spacing under different conditions through row spacing, printing, and verifying the relationship between the contact angle and the printing thickness. Finally, the relationship between the blood vessel wall thickness and the contact angle was obtained by biofabrication with 3D bioprinting, which can also confirm the controllability of the vascular membrane thickness molding. It lays a foundation for the following study of the small caliber blood vessel printing molding experiment.

Extraction of natural hydroxyapatite for biomedical applications—A review

Hydroxyapatite has recently played a crucial role in the sustainable development of biomedical applications. Publications related to hydroxyapatite as filler for biopolymers have exhibited an increasing trend due to the expanding research output. Based on the latest publications, the authors reviewed the research trends regarding hydroxyapatite use in biomedical applications. Analysis of the Scopus database using the keywords ‘hydroxyapatite” and “biomedical applications” determined that 1,714 papers were produced between 2012 and 2021. The number of publications related to these keywords more than doubled between 2012 (99) and 2021 (247). The hydrothermal method, solid-state reactions, the sol-gel process, emulsion, micro-emulsion, and mostly chemical precipitation were used to produce synthetic hydroxyapatite. Meanwhile, calcination, alkaline hydrolysis, precipitation, hydrothermal, and a combination of these techniques were used in producing natural hydroxyapatite. Studies in the current literature reveal that shell-based animal sources have been frequently used as hydroxyapatite resources during investigations concerning biomedical applications, while calcination was the extraction method most often applied. Essential trace elements of fish bone, oyster shell, and eggshell were also found in hydroxyapatite powder. Abalone mussel shell and eggshell showed Ca/P ratios closer to the stoichiometric ratio due to the use of effective extraction methods such as manipulating aging time or stirring process parameters. This review should greatly assist by offering scientific insights to support all the recommended future research works, not only that associated with biomedical applications.

Deciphering the focuses and trends in skin regeneration research through bibliometric analyses

Increasing attention to skin regeneration has rapidly broadened research on the topic. However, no bibliometric analysis of the field’s research trends has yet been conducted. In response to this research gap, this study analyzed the publication patterns and progress of skin regeneration research worldwide using a bibliometric analysis of 1,471 papers comprising 1,227 (83.4%) original articles and 244 (16.6%) reviews sourced from a Web of Science search. Publication distribution was analyzed by country/region, institution, journal, and author. The frequency of keywords was assessed to prepare a bibliometric map of the development trends in skin regeneration research. China and the United States were the most productive countries in the field: China had the greatest number of publications at 433 (29.4%) and the United States had the highest H-index ranking (59 with 15,373 citations or 31.9%). Author keywords were classified into four clusters: stem cell, biomaterial, tissue engineering, and wound dressing. “Stem cells,” “chitosan,” “tissue engineering,” and “wound dressings” were the most frequent keywords in each cluster; therefore, they reflected the field’s current focus areas. “Immunomodulation,” “aloe vera,” “extracellular vesicles,” “injectable hydrogel,” and “three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting” were relatively new keywords, indicating that biomaterials for skin regeneration and 3D bioprinting are promising research hotspots in the field. Moreover, clinical studies on new dressings and techniques to accelerate skin regeneration deserve more attention. By uncovering current and future research hotspots, this analysis offers insights that may be useful for both new and experienced scholars striving to expand research and innovation in the field of skin regeneration.

The Effect of the PVA/Chitosan/Citric Acid Ratio on the Hydrophilicity of Electrospun Nanofiber Meshes

In this study, scaffolds were prepared via an electrospinning method for application in oral cavities. The hydrophilicity of the fiber mesh is of paramount importance, as it promotes cell spreading; however, the most commonly used polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and other hydrophilic fiber meshes immediately disintegrate in aqueous media. In contrast, the excessive hydrophobicity of the scaffolds already inhibits cells adhesion on the surface. Therefore, the hydrophilicity of the fiber meshes needed to be optimized. Scaffolds with different polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan/citric acid ratios were prepared. The addition of chitosan and the heat initiated cross-linkage of the polymers via citric acid enhanced the scaffolds' hydrophobicity. The optimization of this property could be followed by contact angle measurements, and the increased number of cross-linkages were also supported by IR spectroscopy results. The fibers' physical parameters were monitored via low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). As biocompatibility is essential for dental applications, Alamar Blue assay was used to prove that meshes do not have any negative effects on dental pulp stem cells. Our results showed that the optimization of the fiber nets was successful, as they will not disintegrate in intraoral cavities during dental applications.
