Superabsorbent hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides: Classification, synthesis, physicochemical properties, and agronomic efficacy under abiotic stress conditions: A review

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are a class of polymers that have attracted tremendous interest due to their multifunctional properties and wide range of applications. The importance of this class of polymers is highlighted by the large number of publications, including articles and patents, dealing with the use of SAPs for various applications. Within this framework, this review provides an overview of SAPs and highlights various key aspects, such as their history, classification, and preparation methods, including those related to chemically or physically cross-linked networks, as well as key factors affecting their performance in terms of water absorption and storage. This review also examines the potential use of polysaccharides-based SAPs in agriculture as soil conditioners or slow-release fertilizers. The basic aspects of SAPs, and methods of chemical modification of polysaccharides are presented and guidelines for the preparation of hydrogels are given. The water retention and swelling mechanisms are discussed in light of some mathematical empirical models. The nutrient slow-release kinetics of nutrient-rich SAPs are also examined on the basic of commonly used mathematical models. Some examples illustrating the advantages of using SAPs in agriculture as soil conditioners and agrochemical carriers to improve crop growth and productivity are presented and discussed. This review also attempts to provide an overview of the role of SAPs in mitigating the adverse effects of various abiotic stresses, such as heavy metals, salinity, and drought, and outlines future trends and prospects.

Enhanced Water Absorbency and Water Retention Rate for Superabsorbent Polymer via Porous Calcium Carbonate Crosslinking

To improve the water absorbency and water-retention rate of superabsorbent materials, a porous calcium carbonate composite superabsorbent polymer (PCC/PAA) was prepared by copolymerization of acrylic acid and porous calcium carbonate prepared from ground calcium carbonate. The results showed that the binding energies of C-O and C=O in the O 1s profile of PCC/PAA had 0.2 eV and 0.1-0.7 eV redshifts, respectively, and the bonding of -COO- groups on the surface of the porous calcium carbonate led to an increase in the binding energy of O 1s. Furthermore, the porous calcium carbonate chelates with the -COO- group in acrylic acid through the surface Ca2+ site to form multidirectional crosslinking points, which would increase the flexibility of the crosslinking network and promote the formation of pores inside the PCC/PAA to improve the water storage space. The water absorbency of PCC/PAA with 2 wt% porous calcium carbonate in deionized water and 0.9 wt% NaCl water solution increased from 540 g/g and 60 g/g to 935 g/g and 80 g/g, respectively. In addition, since the chemical crosslinker N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide is used in the polymerization process of PCC/PAA, N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide and porous calcium carbonate enhance the stability of the PCC/PAA crosslinking network by double-crosslinking with a polyacrylic acid chain, resulting in the crosslinking network of PCC/PAA not being destroyed after water absorption saturation. Therefore, PCC/PAA with 2 wt% porous calcium carbonate improved the water-retention rate by 244% after 5 h at 60 °C, and the compressive strength was approximately five-times that of the superabsorbent without porous calcium carbonate.

Progress in the Preparation of Stimulus-Responsive Cellulose Hydrogels and Their Application in Slow-Release Fertilizers

Agriculture is facing challenges such as water scarcity, low fertilizer utilization, food security and environmental sustainability. Therefore, the development of slow-release fertilizer (SRF) with controlled water retention and release is particularly important. Slow-release fertilizer hydrogel (SRFH) has a three-dimensional (3D) network structure combined with fertilizer processing, displaying excellent hydrophilicity, biocompatibility and controllability. Cellulose has abundant hydroxyl groups as well as outstanding biodegradability and special mechanical properties, which make it a potential candidate material for the fabrication of hydrogels. This work would analyze and discuss various methods for preparing stimulus-responsive cellulose hydrogels and their combinations with different fertilizers. Moreover, the application and release mechanism of stimulus-responsive cellulose hydrogels in SRF have been summarized as well. Finally, we would explore the potential issues of stimulus-responsive cellulose hydrogels serving as an SRF, propose reasonable solutions and give an outlook of the future research directions.

Dual-Cure Adhesives Using a Newly Synthesized Itaconic Acid-Based Epoxy Acrylate Oligomer

Herein, a novel biomass-derived itaconic acid (IA)-based epoxy acrylate oligomer (EAO) is synthesized by means of the esterification reaction of the epoxy group of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) with the carboxylic group of IA. The detailed chemical structure of the as-prepared bisphenol A diglycidyl ether diitaconate (BI) is characterized via the KOH value, FT-IR spectrum, and 1H-NMR spectrum. Further, a dual-cure adhesive system is formulated using BADGE, acrylic acid, and trimethylolpropane triacrylate with various BI contents, and the adhesive performance is investigated by measuring the thermal stability, adhesive properties, pencil hardness, and surface energy properties. Thus, the dual-cure adhesive with a BI content of 0.3 mol is shown to provide excellent thermal stability, along with an adhesive strength of 10.7 MPa, a pencil hardness of 2H, and a similar surface energy to that of a typical polycarbonate film. In addition, the properties of the BI-based dual-cure adhesive are compared with those of the dual-cure adhesives based on bisphenol A glycerolate diacrylate or bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate.

Simultaneous removal of aqueous same ionic type heavy metals and dyes by a magnetic chitosan/polyethyleneimine embedded hydrophobic sodium alginate composite: Performance, interaction and mechanism

Heavy metals and azo dyes caused huge harm to the aqueous system and human health. A magnetic chitosan/polyethyleneimine embedded hydrophobic sodium alginate composite (MCPS) was designed and prepared to simultaneously remove aqueous same ionic type heavy metals and azo dyes. In mono-polluted system, the optimal pH for Cr(VI), MO (methyl orange), Cu(Ⅱ) and MB (methylene blue) were 3, 2, 6 and 12 with a saturated adsorption capacity of 87.53, 66.41, 351.03 and 286.54 mg/g, respectively. Pseudo-second-order was suitable to describe the adsorption kinetics of them and the adsorption isotherms were more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model being a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-increasing process. In binary-polluted system, MCPS possessed simultaneous adsorption for Cr (Ⅵ)-MO and Cu(Ⅱ)-MB pollutants at their optimal pH, in addition, whether in anionic or cationic solution, the removal of heavy metals were promoted with the add of azo dyes but the removal of azo dyes were suppressed with the add of heavy metals. Both Cr (Ⅵ)-MO and Cu(Ⅱ)-MB pollutants could be effectively adsorbed and desorbed from MCPS by changing the pH of the aqueous solution to realize recyclability. Lastly, removal mechanism was revealed in detail by FT-IR, EDS and XPS.

Chitosan-Graft-Poly(acrylic acid) Superabsorbent's Water Holding in Sandy Soils and Its Application in Agriculture

Sandy soil has a low ability to absorb and store low water, low nutrient content, and a high water evaporation rate, so it is not suitable to be used as agricultural land. Superabsorbents can be used to overcome these weaknesses. The purpose of this study was to measure the abilities of the superabsorbents, including water holding, swelling, and water retention of sandy soil enriched with superabsorbent, and to analyze the chitosan-graft-poly(acrylic acid) superabsorbent characteristics. The superabsorbent was prepared by mixing a chitosan solution with ammonium persulfate as an initiator and acrylic acid, which had been neutralized with KOH. Then, the mixture was cross-linked with N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA). The resulting superabsorbent gel was dried in an oven and then crushed for analysis. The results showed that an increase in chitosan concentration increased the gel fraction, swelling, reusability, and water holding. Meanwhile, an increase in chitosan concentration decreased water retention in sandy soils. The swelling kinetics can be predicted using the pseudo-second-order model with high accuracy (R² value of 0.99).

Slow Release and Water Retention Performance of Poly(Acrylic Acid-Co-Acrylamide)/Fulvic Acid/Oil Shale Semicoke Superabsorbent Composites

In order to achieve the low cost and multifunction of superabsorbent composites, poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/fulvic acid/oil shale semicoke (PAMFS) were prepared by free radical copolymerization of fulvic acid (FA), oil shale semicoke (OSSC), acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM). The characterization results revealed that FA and OSSC were involved in the construction of a three-dimensional (3D) polymeric network via hydrogen bonding and covalent bonding. The water absorbency of PAMFS in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution were 724 and 98 g/g, respectively. The FA slow release of PAMFS in distilled water and soil was achieved due to the interaction between FA and the functional groups of polymer matrix by hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds. Furthermore, the potted experiment indicated that the addition of PAMFS to soil can significantly promote plant growth compared with the pure soil, regardless of water stress. Therefore, this superabsorbent composite showed an excellent water absorption and salt resistance performance, as well as nice slow release performance. It has a broad application prospect.

Removal of Cr(VI) by polyaniline embedded polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate beads - Extension from water treatment to soil remediation

Efficient nano-scale chromium (Cr) remediating agents used in the water industry may find their application in soil difficult because of the strong aggregation effect. In this study, a millimeter-sized PANI/PVA/SA composite (PPS) was synthesized by embedding polyaniline (PANI) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA) gel beads. Additionally, the PPS was used to recover hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contaminated water and soil to study the remediation impacts and mechanism. Results showed that the PPS was an irregular sphere with a pore size of 24.24 nm and exhibited strong adsorption capacity (83.1 mg/g) for removing Cr(VI) in water. The Cr(VI) adsorption by PPS could be well described with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model, indicating that the chemical reactions were the controlling step in the Cr(VI) adsorption process. PPS also exhibited excellent physicochemical properties (< 13 mg/L TOC release) and reusability (efficiency of 95.25% after four runs) for Cr(VI) removal. Soil incubation results showed that the 5% PPS (5PPS) treatment could efficiently remove 24.17% of total Cr and 52.47% of Cr(VI) in the contaminated soil after 30 days. Meanwhile, the water-soluble and the leaching Cr contents were decreased by 43.37% and 61.78% in the 5PPS group, respectively. Elemental speciation by XPS revealed that Cr(VI) removal from solution and soil proceeded mainly by electrostatic attraction, reduction, and complexation/chelation. The study implied that PPS could be a useful amendment to remediate both the Cr(VI)-contaminated water and soil.
