The Effect of Molecular Weight on the Solubility Properties of Biocompatible Poly(ethylene succinate) Polyester

Solution and Film Self-Assembly Behavior of a Block Copolymer Composed of a Poly(ionic Liquid) and a Stimuli-Responsive Weak Polyelectrolyte

Cu(0)-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization was used to synthesize a poly(ionic liquid), poly[4-vinylbenzyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide] (PVBBImTf2N), a stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte, poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA), and a novel block copolymer formed from these two polymers. The synthesis of the block copolymer, poly[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate]-block-[poly(4-vinylbenzyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide] (PDMAEMA-b-PVBBImTf2N), was examined to evaluate the control of "livingness" polymerization, as indicated by molecular weight, characterizations of degree of polymerization, and 1HNMR spectroscopy. 2D DOSY NMR measurements revealed the successful formation of block copolymer and the connection between the two polymer blocks. PDMAEMA-b-PVBBImTf2N was further characterized for supramolecular interactions in both the bulk and solution states through FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopies. While the block copolymer demonstrated similar intermolecular behavior to the PIL homopolymer in the bulk state as indicated by FTIR, hydrogen bonding and counterion interactions in solution were observed in polar organic solvent through 1H NMR measurements. The DLS characterization revealed that the PDMAEMA-b-PVBBImTf2N block copolymer forms a network-like aggregated structure due to a combination of hydrogen bonding between the PDMAEMA and PIL group and electrostatic repulsive interactions between PIL blocks. This structure was found to collapse upon the addition of KNO3 while still maintaining hydrogen bonding interactions. AFM-IR analysis demonstrated varied morphologies, with spherical PDMAEMA in PVBBImTf2N matrix morphology exhibited in the region approaching the film center. AFM-IR further revealed signals from silica nano-contaminates, which selectively interacted with the PDMAEMA spheres, demonstrating the potential for the PDMAEMA-b-PVBBImTf2N PIL block copolymer in polymer-inorganic nanoparticle composite applications.

Culture-directed antibiotics in peritoneal dialysis solutions: a systematic review focused on stability and compatibility

BACKGROUND

This systematic review summarises the stability of less commonly prescribed antibiotics in different peritoneal dialysis solutions that could be used for culture-directed therapy of peritonitis, which would be especially useful in regions with a high prevalence of multidrug antibiotic-resistant strains.

METHODS

A literature search of Medline, Scopus, Embase and Google Scholar for articles published from inception to 25 January, 2023 was conducted. Only antibiotic stability studies conducted in vitro and not recently reviewed by So et al. were included. The main outcomes were chemical, physical, antimicrobial and microbial stability. This protocol was registered in PROSPERO (registration number CRD42023393366).

RESULTS

We screened 1254 abstracts, and 28 articles were included in the study. In addition to those discussed in a recent systematic review (So et al., Clin Kidney J 15(6):1071-1078, 2022), we identified 18 antimicrobial agents. Of these, 9 have intraperitoneal dosing recommendations in the recent International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) peritonitis guidelines, and 7 of the 9 had stability data applicable to clinical practice. They were cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, daptomycin, ofloxacin, and teicoplanin in glucose-based solutions, tobramycin in Extraneal solution only and fosfomycin in Extraneal, Nutrineal, Physioneal 1.36% and 2.27% glucose solutions.

CONCLUSIONS

Physicochemical stability has not been demonstrated for all antibiotics with intraperitoneal dosing recommendations in the ISPD peritonitis guidelines. Further studies are required to determine the stability of antibiotics, especially in icodextrin-based and low-glucose degradation products, pH-neutral solutions.

Polymeric Networks Derived from UV-Curing of Bio-Based Polyesters for Methyl Violet Removal

In this study, firstly, the syntheses and characterizations of biobased polyesters with different acid values obtained from the condensation reaction of biobased itaconic acid and polyethylene glycol were investigated. Then, UV curing was applied to form polymeric networks as adsorbent material from these polyesters containing different acids. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used for the characterization of polymeric networks. The effects of the parameters of contact time, initial dye concentration, pH, temperature, amount of adsorbent on adsorption were investigated by batch method. In addition, adsorption equilibrium data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, Elovich, Redlich-Peterson, Harkin-Jura and Jossens adsorption models. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies were performed at 298, 308, 318 and 328 K and desorption studies were also examined. Comparison studies for the effects of the acid values of the adsorbent materials on the removal of methyl violet (MV) organic pollutant from aqueous solutions were analyzed. According to the pseudo-second-order model, the adsorption capacities were found to be ≥ 357.14 mg/g for the adsorbents. From the thermodynamic data, it was determined that the mechanism was exothermic and spontaneous. As a result of the third reuse, it was found that the adsorbents had a removal efficiency of ≥ 72.36%. According to the results observed the increase in the acidities in the chemical structure of bio-based polymeric networks enhances the adsoption properties.

Correlation of Emulsion Chemistry, Film Morphology, and Device Performance in Polyfluorene LEDs Deposited by RIR-MAPLE

Thin films of polyfluorene (PFO) were deposited using emulsion-based resonant infrared, matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE). Here, it is shown that properly selected surfactant chemistry in the emulsion can increase crystalline β phase (β-PFO) content and consequently improve the color purity of light emission. To determine the impact of surfactant on the device performance of resulting films, blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with PFO as an active region were fabricated and compared. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to explain the physical and chemical changes in the emulsion properties as a function of the surfactant. The results indicate that the experimental film morphology and device performance are highly correlated to the emulsion droplet micelle structure and interaction energy among PFO, primary solvent, and water obtained from MD simulations. While the champion device performance was lower than other reported devices (luminous flux ∼0.0206 lm, brightness ∼725.58 cd/m², luminous efficacy ∼0.0548 lm/W, and luminous efficiency ∼0.174 cd/A), deep blue emission with good color purity (CIE chromaticity diagram coordinate of (0.177,0.141)) was achieved for low operating voltages around 3 V. Furthermore, a much higher β-phase content of 21% was achieved in annealed films (without the pinholes typically found in β-PFO deposited by other techniques) by using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as the surfactant.

Effect of solvent on the emulsion and morphology of polyfluorene films: all-atom molecular dynamics approach

The morphology of conjugated polymer thin films deposited by the resonant infrared matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE) process is related to the emulsion characteristics. However, a fundamental understanding of how and why the emulsion characteristics control the film properties and device performance is yet unclear. We performed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of emulsions containing a mixture of polyfluorene (PFO) polymer, various primary solvents, secondary solvent, and water. The emulsion properties were then examined as a function of variable primary solvent and correlated with the morphology of deposited PFO thin films. The examination of the explicit interactions between all components of the emulsion indicated that using a primary solvent with a lower solubility-in-water and a higher non-bonded interaction energy ratio, between the solvent, polymer, and water in the emulsion recipe, produced the best result with smoother and denser films. Additionally, our simulation results are consistent with the AFM experimental results, indicating that interactions driven by trichlorobenzene (TCB) primary solvent within the emulsion are responsible for high-quality, smooth, and continuous thin film surfaces. Overall, this study can support the choice of a suitable primary solvent and provides the computational framework for predictions of new recipes for polymeric emulsion systems.

Fe-Doped Carbon Dots as NIR-II Fluorescence Probe for In Vivo Gastric Imaging and pH Detection

Carbon dots (CDs) with excellent cytocompatibility, tunable optical properties, and simple synthesis routes are highly desirable for use in optical bioimaging. However, the majority of existing CDs are triggered by ultraviolet/blue light, presenting emissions in the visible/first near-infrared (NIR-I) regions, which do not allow deep tissue penetration. Emerging research into CDs with NIR-II emission in the red region has generated limited designs with poor quantum yield, restricting their in vivo imaging applications due to low penetration depth. Developing novel CDs with NIR-II emissions and high quantum yield has significant and far-reaching applications in bioimaging and photodynamic therapy. Here, it is developed for the first time Fe-doped CDs (Fe-CDs) exhibiting the excellent linear relationship between 900-1200 nm fluorescence-emission and pH values, and high quantum yield (QY-1.27%), which can be used as effective probes for in vivo NIR-II bioimaging. These findings demonstrate reliable imaging accuracy in tissue as deep as 4 mm, reflecting real-time pH changes comparable to a standard pH electrode. As an important example application, the Fe-CDs probe can non-invasively monitor in vivo gastric pH changes during the digestion process in mice, illustrating its potential applications in aiding imaging-guided diagnosis of gastric diseases or therapeutic delivery.

Novel Dry Spinning Process of Natural Macromolecules for Sustainable Fiber Material -1- Proof of the Concept Using Silk Fibroin

Researchers around the world are developing technologies to minimize carbon dioxide emissions or carbon neutrality in various fields. In this study, the dry spinning of regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) was achieved as a proof of concept for a process using ionic liquids as dissolution aids and plasticizers in developing natural polymeric materials. A dry spinning equipment system combining a stainless-steel syringe and a brushless motor was built to generate fiber compacts from a dope of silk fibroin obtained by degumming silkworm silk cocoons and ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([HMIM][Cl]) according to a general method. The maximum stress and maximum elongation of the RSF fibers were 159.9 MPa and 31.5%, respectively. RSF fibers containing ionic liquids have a homogeneous internal structure according to morphological investigations. Elemental analysis of fiber cross sections revealed the homogeneous distribution of nonvolatile ionic liquid [HMIM][Cl] in RSF fibers. Furthermore, the removal of ionic liquids from RSF fibers through impregnation washing with organic solvents was verified to enhance industrial applications. Tensile testing showed that the fiber strength could be maintained even after removing the ionic liquid. Thermogravimetric analysis results show that the organic solvent 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol is chemically coordinated to silk fibroin and, as a natural polymer, can withstand heat up to 250 °C.

Biobased Elastomer Nanofibers Guide Light-Controlled Human-iPSC-Derived Skeletal Myofibers

Generating skeletal muscle tissue that mimics the cellular alignment, maturation, and function of native skeletal muscle is an ongoing challenge in disease modeling and regenerative therapies. Skeletal muscle cultures require extracellular guidance and mechanical support to stabilize contractile myofibers. Existing microfabrication-based solutions are limited by complex fabrication steps, low throughput, and challenges in measuring dynamic contractile function. Here, the synthesis and characterization of a new biobased nanohybrid elastomer, which is electrospun into aligned nanofiber sheets to mimic the skeletal muscle extracellular matrix, is presented. The polymer exhibits remarkable hyperelasticity well-matched to that of native skeletal muscle (≈11-50 kPa), with ultimate strain ≈1000%, and elastic modulus ≈25 kPa. Uniaxially aligned nanofibers guide myoblast alignment, enhance sarcomere formation, and promote a ≈32% increase in myotube fusion and ≈50% increase in myofiber maturation. The elastomer nanofibers stabilize optogenetically controlled human induced pluripotent stem cell derived skeletal myofibers. When activated by blue light, the myofiber-nanofiber hybrid constructs maintain a significantly higher (>200%) contraction velocity and specific force (>280%) compared to conventional culture methods. The engineered myofibers exhibit a power density of ≈35 W m-3 . This system is a promising new skeletal muscle tissue model for applications in muscular disease modeling, drug discovery, and muscle regeneration.

Biocompatible poly(ethylene succinate) polyester with molecular weight dependent drug release properties

In the present study, we demonstrate that well-known molecular weight-dependent solubility properties of a polymer can also be used in the field of controlled drug delivery. To prove this, poly(ethylene succinate) (PES) polyesters with polycondensation time regulated molecular weights were synthesized via catalyst-free direct polymerization in an equimolar ratio of ethylene glycol and succinic acid monomers at 185 °C. DSC and contact angle measurements revealed that increasing the molecular weight (M_w, 4.3-5.05 kDa) through the polymerization time (40-80 min) increased the thermal stability (T_m= ∼61-80 °C) and slightly the hydrophobicity (Θ_w= ∼27-41°) of the obtained aliphatic polyester. Next, this biodegradable polymer was used for the encapsulation of Ca²⁺ channel blocker Nimodipine (NIMO) to overcome the poor water solubility and enhance the bioavailability of the drug. The drug/ polymer compatibility was proved by the means of solubility (δ) and Flory-Huggins interaction (miscibility) parameters (χ). The nanoprecipitation encapsulation of NIMO into PES with increasing M_w resulted in the formation of spherical 270 ± 103 nm NIMO-loaded PES nanoparticles (NPs). Furthermore, based on the XRD measurements, the encapsulated form of NIMO-loaded PES NPs showed lower drug crystallinity, which enhanced not only the water solubility but even the water stability of the NIMO in an aqueous medium. The in-vitro drug release experiments demonstrated that the release of NIMO drug could be accelerated or even prolonged by the molecular weights of PES as well. Due to the low crystallinity of PES polyester and low particle size of the encapsulated NIMO drug led to enhance solubility and releasing process of NIMO from PES with lower M_w (4.3 kDa and 4.5 kDa) compared to pure crystalline NIMO. However, further increasing the molecular weight (5.05 kDa) was already reduced the amount of drug release that provides the prolonged therapeutic effect and enhances the bioavailability of the NIMO drug.

Understanding the PEDOT:PSS, PTAA and P3CT-X Hole-Transport-Layer-Based Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of metal-oxide-based regular perovskite solar cells have been higher than 25% for more than 2 years. Up to now, the PCEs of polymer-based inverted perovskite solar cells are widely lower than 23%. PEDOT:PSS thin films, modified PTAA thin films and P3CT thin films are widely used as the hole transport layer or hole modification layer of the highlyefficient inverted perovskite solar cells. Compared with regular perovskite solar cells, polymer-based inverted perovskite solar cells can be fabricated under relatively low temperatures. However, the intrinsic characteristics of carrier transportation in the two types of solar cells are different, which limits the photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells. Thanks to the low activation energies for the formation of high-quality perovskite crystalline thin films, it is possible to manipulate the optoelectronic properties by controlling the crystal orientation with the different polymer-modified ITO/glass substrates. To achieve the higher PCE, the effects of polymer-modified ITO/glass substrates on the optoelectronic properties and the formation of perovskite crystalline thin films have to be completely understood simultaneously.
