Influence of Solid Lubricant Addition on Friction and Wear Response of 3D Printed Polymer Composites

Enhancing Tribological Performance of Self-Lubricating Composite via Hybrid 3D Printing and In Situ Spraying

In this work, a self-lubricating composite was manufactured using a novel hybrid 3D printing/in situ spraying process that involved the printing of an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) matrix using fused deposition modeling (FDM), along with the in situ spraying of alumina (Al2O3) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) reinforcements during 3D printing. The results revealed that the addition of the reinforcement induced an extensive formation of micropores throughout the ABS structure. Under tensile-loading conditions, the mechanical strength and cohesive interlayer bonding of the composites were diminished due to the presence of these micropores. However, under tribological conditions, the presence of the Al2O3 and hBN reinforcement improved the frictional resistance of ABS in extreme loading conditions. This improvement in frictional resistance was attributed to the ability of the Al2O3 reinforcement to support the external tribo-load and the shearing-like ability of hBN reinforcement during sliding. Collectively, this work provides novel insights into the possibility of designing tribologically robust ABS components through the addition of in situ-sprayed ceramic and solid-lubricant reinforcements.

Mechanical and Wear Studies of Boron Nitride-Reinforced Polymer Composites Developed via 3D Printing Technology

In the realm of 3D printing, polymers serve as fundamental materials offering versatility to cater to a diverse array of final product properties and tailored to the specific needs of the creator. Polymers, as the building blocks of 3D printing, inherently possess certain mechanical and wear properties that may fall short of ideal. To address this limitation, the practice of reinforcing polymer matrices with suitable materials has become a common approach. One such reinforcement material is boron nitride (BN), lauded for its remarkable mechanical attributes. The integration of BN as a reinforcing element has yielded substantial enhancements in the properties of polylactic acid (PLA). The central objective of this research endeavor is the development of polymer composites based on PLA and fortified with boron nitride. This study undertakes the comprehensive exploration of the compatibility and synergy between BN and PLA with a keen focus on examining their resultant properties. To facilitate this, various percentages of boron nitride were incorporated into the PLA matrix, specifically at 5% and 10% by weight. The compounding process involved the blending of PLA and boron nitride followed by the creation of composite filaments measuring 1.75 mm in diameter and optimized for 3D printing. Subsequently, test specimens were meticulously fabricated in adherence with ASTM standards to evaluate the ultimate tensile strength, dimensional accuracy, wear characteristics, and surface roughness. The findings from these assessments were systematically compared to the wear properties and mechanical behavior of PLA composites reinforced with boron nitride and the unreinforced PLA material. This study serves as a foundational resource that offers insights into the feasibility and methodologies of incorporating boron nitride into PLA matrices, paving the way for enhanced polymer composite development.

Optimizing the Rheological and Thermomechanical Response of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene/Silicon Nitride Nanocomposites in Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing

The current research aimed to examine the thermomechanical properties of new nanocomposites in additive manufacturing (AM). Material extrusion (MEX) 3D printing was utilized to evolve acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) nanocomposites with silicon nitride nano-inclusions. Regarding the mechanical and thermal response, the fabricated 3D-printed samples were subjected to a course of standard tests, in view to evaluate the influence of the Si₃N₄ nanofiller content in the polymer matrix. The morphology and fractography of the fabricated filaments and samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Moreover, Raman and energy dispersive spectroscopy tests were accomplished to evaluate the composition of the matrix polymer and nanomaterials. Silicon nitride nanoparticles were proved to induce a significant mechanical reinforcement in comparison with the polymer matrix without any additives or fillers. The optimal mechanical response was depicted to the grade ABS/Si₃N₄ 4 wt. %. An impressive increase in flexural strength (30.3%) and flexural toughness (47.2%) was found. The results validate that these novel ABS nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties can be promising materials.

AFM Analysis of a Three-Point Flexure Tested, 3D Printing Definitive Restoration Material for Dentistry

Background: Three-dimensional printing is a rapidly developing technology across all industries. In medicine recent developments include 3D bioprinting, personalized medication and custom prosthetics and implants. To ensure safety and long-term usability in a clinical setting, it is essential to understand material specific properties. This study aims to analyze possible surface changes of a commercially available and approved DLP 3D printed definitive restoration material for dentistry after three-point flexure testing. Furthermore, this study explores whether Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a feasible method for examination of 3D printed dental materials in general. This is a pilot study, as there are currently no studies that analyze 3D printed dental materials using an AFM. Methods: The present study consisted of a pretest followed by the main test. The resulting break force of the preliminary test was used to determine the force used in the main test. The main test consisted of atomic force microscopy (AFM) surface analysis of the test specimen followed by a three-point flexure procedure. After bending, the same specimen was analyzed with the AFM again, to observe possible surface changes. Results: The mean root mean square (RMS) roughness of the segments with the most stress was 20.27 nm (±5.16) before bending, while it was 26.48 nm (±6.67) afterward. The corresponding mean roughness (Ra) values were 16.05 nm (±4.25) and 21.19 nm (±5.71) Conclusions: Under three-point flexure testing, the surface roughness increased significantly. The p-value for RMS roughness was p = 0.003, while it was p = 0.006 for Ra. Furthermore, this study showed that AFM surface analysis is a suitable procedure to investigate surface changes in 3D printed dental materials.

Tests of Dental Properties of Composite Materials Containing Nanohybrid Filler

Complex composite materials are used in many areas of dentistry. Initially, chemically hardened materials were also used, and in this group nanohybrid composites are highly valued. They are often used today, mainly for the direct reconstruction of damaged hard tooth tissue materials for rebuilding damaged tissues using indirect adhesive techniques. The research was conducted to determine the mechanical properties of materials with nanofillers. The article focuses on methods of important test methods for dental prosthetics: resilience, abrasion, wear test, impact strength, hardness, SEM, and chemical analysis. As part of this work, five different series of hybrid composites with nano-fillers were tested. The mechanical properties of composites, such as compressive strength, microhardness, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity, depend mainly on the type, particle size, and amount of filler introduced. The obtained test results showed that the type and amount of nanofiller have a significant influence on the mechanical and tribological properties. The introduction of nanofillers allowed us to obtain higher mechanical properties compared to classic materials discussed by other researchers. The study observed a change in vibrations in the IR spectrum, which allowed a comparison of the organic structures of the studied preparations.

Effects of Automotive Test Parameters on Dry Friction Fiber-Reinforced Clutch Facing Surface Microgeometry and Wear-Part 2

Coefficient of friction values, wear and surface roughness differences are revealed using pin-on-disc test apparatus examinations under three pv loads, where samples are cut from a reference, unused, and several differently aged and dimensioned, used, dry friction fiber-reinforced hybrid composite clutch facings. Tests are characterized by surface activation energy and separated into Trend 1, ‘clutch killer’, and 2, ‘moderate’, groups from our previous study. The results reveal that acceptable, 0.41–0.58, coefficient of friction values among Trend 1 specimens cannot be reached during high pv tests, though the −0.19–−0.11 difference of minimum and maximum pv results disappears when activation energy reaches 179 MJ. The maximum pv friction coefficient can decrease by up to 30% at working diameter due to clutch killer test circumstances, as 179 MJ surface activation energy is applied, while by moderate tests such losses can only be detected close to 2000 MJ energy values among small-sized facings. Besides that, Trend 2 specific wear values are the third of trend 1 results at inner diameter specimens. Compared to reference facing values, specific wear results at working diameter under maximum pv decrease by 47–100%, while increasing specific wear during lifetime can only be detected at the inner diameter of facings enduring clutch killer tests or that are small-sized facings. Among Trend 1 radial and tangential Ra delta results, inner diameter samples provide more decreasing surface roughness data, while by Trend 2 values, the opposite relation is detected. Apart from the effects of activation energy, mileage and driver profile, facing size and friction diameter influence is also revealed.

Electrically Conductive Nanocomposite Fibers for Flexible and Structural Electronics

The following paper presents a simple, low-cost, and repeatable manufacturing process for fabricating conductive, elastic carbon-elastomer nanocomposite fibers for applications in the textile industry and beyond. The presented method allows for the manufacturing of fibers with a diameter of 0.2 mm, containing up to 50 vol. % of graphite powder, 10 vol. % of CNT, and a mix of both fillers. As a result, resistivity below 0.2 Ωm for the 0.2 mm-diameter fibers was achieved. Additionally, conductive fibers are highly elastic, which makes them suitable for use in the textile industry as an element of circuits. The effect of strain on the change in resistance was also tested. Researches have shown that highly conductive fibers can withstand strain of up to 40%, with resistivity increasing nearly five times compared to the unstretched fiber. This research shows that the developed composites can also be used as strain sensors in textronic systems. Finally, functional demonstrators were made by directly sewing the developed fibers into a cotton fabric. First, the non-quantitative tests indicate the feasibility of using the composites as conductive fibers to power components in textronic systems and for bending detection.
