Removal of Oily Contaminants from Water by Using the Hydrophobic Ag Nanoparticles Incorporated Dopamine Modified Cellulose Foam

A review of cellulose-based catechol-containing functional materials for advanced applications

With the increment in global energy consumption and severe environmental pollution, it is urgently needed to explore green and sustainable materials. Inspired by nature, catechol groups in mussel adhesion proteins have been successively understood and utilized as novel biomimetic materials. In parallel, cellulose presents a wide class of functional materials rating from macro-scale to nano-scale components. The cross-over among both research fields alters the introduction of impressive materials with potential engineering properties, where catechol-containing materials supply a general stage for the functionalization of cellulose or cellulose derivatives. In this review, the role of catechol groups in the modification of cellulose and cellulose derivatives is discussed. A broad variety of advanced applications of cellulose-based catechol-containing materials, including adhesives, hydrogels, aerogels, membranes, textiles, pulp and papermaking, composites, are presented. Furthermore, some critical remaining challenges and opportunities are studied to mount the way toward the rational purpose and applications of cellulose-based catechol-containing materials.

Highly Permeable Sulfonated Polydopamine Integrated MXene Membranes for Efficient Surfactant-Stabilized Oil-in-Water Separation

MXene is an incredibly promising two-dimensional material with immense potential to serve as a high-performing separating or barrier layer to develop advanced membranes. Despite the significant progress made in MXene membranes, two major challenges still exist: (i) effectively stacking MXene nanosheets into defect-free membranes and (ii) the high fouling tendency of MXene-based membranes. To address these issues, we employed sulfonated polydopamine (SPD), which simultaneously serves as a binding agent to promote the compact assembling of Ti3C2Tx MXenes (MX) nanosheets and improves the antifouling properties of the resulting sulfonated polydopamine-functionalized MX (SPDMX) membranes. The SPDMX membrane was tested for challenging surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water separation with an impressive efficiency of 98%. Moreover, an ultrahigh permeability of 1620 LMH/bar was also achieved. The sulfonation of PD helps in improving the antifouling characteristics of SPDMX by developing a strong hydration layer and enhancing the oleophobicity of the membrane. The underwater SPDMX membrane appeared superoleophobic with an oil contact angle of 153°, whereas the ceramic membrane exhibited an oil contact angle of 137°. The SPDMX membranes showed an improved flux recovery (31%) compared to the nonsulfonated counterpart. This work highlights the appropriate functionalization of MXene as a promising approach to developing MXene membranes with high permeation flux and better antifouling characteristics for oily wastewater treatment.

Hierarchical Bamboo/Silver Nanoparticle Composites for Sustainable Water Purification

Water reclamation is the most effective way to continuously provide clean water to combat catastrophic global water scarcity. However, current technology for water purification is not conducive to sustainability due to the high energy consumption and negative environmental impact. Here, we introduce an innovative method by utilizing the hierarchical microstructure of bamboo for water purification. Natural bamboo was delignified followed by freeze-drying to obtain a bamboo aerogel with a porosity of 72.0%; then, the bamboo aerogel was coated with silver nanoparticles to form a hierarchical bamboo/silver nanoparticle composite. The scanning electron microscopy images and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results indicated that the silver nanoparticles were uniformly attached to the parenchyma cell surface. By physical adsorption and catalytic reduction, the bamboo/silver nanoparticle composite was able to degrade methylene blue by more than 96.7%, which is mainly attributed to the large specific surface area of the bamboo providing more space for the purification reaction. This composite can be potentially used for board applications with its high porosity, mechanical reliability, and sustainability.

Next-generation ultrafiltration membranes: A review of material design, properties, recent progress, and challenges

Membrane technology utilizing ultrafiltration (UF) processes has emerged as the most widely used and cost-effective simple process in many industrial applications. The industries like textiles and petroleum refining are promptly required membrane based UF processes to alleviate the potential environmental threat caused by the generation of various wastewater. At the same time, major limitations such as material selection as well as fouling behavior challenge the overall performance of UF membranes, particularly in wastewater treatment. Therefore, a complete discussion on material design with structural property relation and separation performance of UF membranes is always exciting. This state-of-the-art review has exclusively focused on the development of UF membranes, the material design, properties, progress in separation processes, and critical challenges. So far, most of the review articles have examined the UF membrane processes through a selected track of paving typical materials and their limited applications. In contrast, in this review, we have exclusively aimed at comprehensive research from material selection and fabrication methods to all the possible applications of UF membranes, giving more attention and theoretical understanding to the complete development of high-performance UF systems. We have discussed the methodical engineering behind the development of UF membranes regardless of their materials and fabrication mechanisms. Identifying the utility of UF membrane systems in various applications, as well as their mode of separation processes, has been well discussed. Overall, the current review conveys the knowledge of the present-day significance of UF membranes together with their future prospective opportunities whilst overcoming known difficulties in many potential applications.

Synthesis of a biomimetic zwitterionic pentapolymer to fabricate high-performance PVDF membranes for efficient separation of oil-in-water nano-emulsions

Oily wastewater from industries has an adverse impact on the environment, human and aquatic life. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane modified with a zwitterionic/hydrophobic pentapolymer (PP) with controlled pore size has been utilized to separate oil from water from their nano-emulsions. The PP has been synthesized in 91% yield via pentapolymerization of four different diallylamine salts [(CH2=CHCH2)2NH+(CH2)x A-], bearing CO2-, PO3H-, SO3-, (CH2)12NH2 pendants, and SO2 in a respective mol ratio of 25:36:25:14:100. Incorporating PP into PVDF has shown a substantially reduced membrane hydrophobicity; the contact angle decreased from 92.5° to 47.4°. The PP-PVDF membranes have demonstrated an excellent capability to deal with the high concentrations of nano-emulsions with a separation efficiency of greater than 97.5%. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) of PP-5 incorporated PVDF membrane was about 82%, which was substantially higher than the pristine PVDF.

Recent Progress in Microfiltration/Ultrafiltration Membranes for Separation of Oil and Water Emulsions

Oily wastewater has become one of the leading causes of environmental pollution. A massive quantity of oily wastewater is released from industries, oil spills, and routine activities, endangering the ecosystem's sustainability. Due to the enormous negative impact, researchers put strenuous efforts into developing a sustainable solution to treat oily wastewater. Microfiltration/ultrafiltration membranes are considered an efficient solution to treat oily wastewater due to their low cost, small footprint, facile operation, and high separation efficiencies. However, membranes severely fouled during the separation process due to oil's adsorption and cake layer formation, which shortens the membranes' life. This review has critically discussed the microfiltration/ultrafiltration membrane synthesizing methods and their emulsion's separation performance. In the end, key challenges and their possible solutions are highlighted to provide future direction to synthesize next-generation membranes.
