Abstract
Starch biopolymer films incorporated with chitosan nanoparticles (CNP) or starch/CNP films are promising alternatives to non-degradable food packaging materials. The films can be utilized for active food packaging applications because CNP exhibits antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, which can improve food shelf-life. Nonetheless, knowledge of the effects of CNP inclusion on the properties of starch films is not fully elucidated. This paper reviews the influences of various concentrations of CNP, sizes of CNP, and other additives on the mechanical, thermal, barrier, antimicrobial, antioxidant, biodegradability, and cytotoxicity properties of starch/CNP films as well as the mechanisms involved in relation to food packaging applications. The usage of starch/CNP films for active food packaging can help to reduce environmental issues and contribute to food safety and security.

Abstract
The present review paper focuses on recent developments in edible films and coatings made of base compounds from biological sources, namely plants, animals, algae, and microorganisms. These sources include by-products, residues, and wastes from agro-food industries and sea products that contribute to sustainability concerns. Chitosan, derived from animal biological sources, such as crustacean exoskeletons, has been the most studied base compound over the past three years. Polysaccharides typically constitute no more than 3-5% of the film/coating base solution, with some exceptions, like Arabic gum. Proteins and lipids may be present in higher concentrations, such as zein and beeswax. This review also discusses the enrichment of these bio-based films and coatings with various functional and/or bioactive compounds to confer or enhance their functionalities, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-enzymatic properties, as well as physical properties. Whenever possible, a comparative analysis among different formulations was performed. The results of the applications of these edible films and coatings to fruit and vegetable products are also described, including shelf life extension, inhibition of microbial growth, and prevention of oxidation. This review also explores novel types of packaging, such as active and intelligent packaging. The potential health benefits of edible films and coatings, as well as the biodegradability of films, are also discussed. Finally, this review addresses recent innovations in the edible films and coatings industry, including the use of nanotechnologies, aerogels, and probiotics, and provides future perspectives and the challenges that the sector is facing.

Abstract
Coating is a technique to surround a target substance with a thin layer to obtain desirable properties. Polyvinyl alcohols (PVAs) are biodegradable plastics and have shown good applicability as a coating or film material. Cellulose nanocrystals are a promising green nanomaterial that has been shown to enhance the properties of PVA after blending. However, these PVA/CNC films have concerns in a moist environment due to high hydrophilicity. To overcome this issue, the current study incorporated beeswax into PVA/CNC films and investigated the effect of CNC and beeswax on the properties of the coatings and films. Results showed that the addition of corn stover-derived CNCs to PVA films increased tensile strength (from 11 to 25 MPa) and Young's modulus (from 32 to 173 MPa) and reduced water vapor transmission rate (from 25 to 20 g h-1 m-2). Beeswax added to PVA/CNC films further improved water vapor barrier properties (from 20 to 9 g h-1 m-2) and maintained Young's modulus (from 173 to 160 MPa), though it caused a reduction in the tensile strength (from 25 to 11 MPa) of the films. This information can help to select materials for blending with PVAs by obtaining the desirable endmost properties depending on applications.

Abstract
The present study developed the formulation of active bionanocomposites films endowed with the abilities of high biodegradability and antimicrobials for active packaging applications. The aim of this work was to prepare poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene succinate) (PLA/PBS) blended films reinforced with different concentrations of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and 9 % of thymol essential oil (EO) using the casting method. The active films were further evaluated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR); as well as mechanical, physical, water vapour permeability (WVP), thermal analysis (TGA), biodegradation, morphological, and antimicrobial (% reduction of bacteria) testing. The tensile strength (TS) of PLA/PBS blend films increased by 12 % with the incorporation of 2 wt% of NFC. The PLA/PBS/NFC with 9 % thymol EO has a good water barrier performance with its tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile modulus was 13.2 MPa, 13.1 %, and 513 MPa respectively. The presence of NFC promoted the disintegration of PLA/PBS films by 70.5 %. These films promoted the antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The study demonstrates that the developed films improved the qualities of chicken fillets and have great potential to be used as active bionanocomposites in food packaging applications.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop sago starch-based bionanocomposite films containing TiO2 nanoparticles and Penganum harmala extract (PE) to increase the shelf life of chicken fillets. First, sago starch films containing different levels of TiO2 nanoparticles (1, 3, and 5%) and PE (5, 10, and 15%) were prepared. The barrier properties and antibacterial activity of the films against different bacteria strains were investigated. Then, the produced films were used for the chicken fillets packaging, and the physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of fillets were estimated during 12-day storage at 4 °C. The results showed that the addition of nano TiO2 and PE in the films increased the antibacterial activity against gram-positive (S. aureus) higher than gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria. The water vapor permeability of the films decreased from 2.9 to 1.26 (×10-11 g/m·s·Pa) by incorporating both PE and nano TiO2. Synergistic effects of PE and nano TiO2 significantly decreased the oxygen permeability of the sago starch films from 8.17 to 4.44 (cc.mil/m2·day). Application results of bionanocomposite films for chicken fillet storage at 4 °C for 12 days demonstrated that the films have great potential to increase the shelf life of fillets. The total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) of chicken fillets increased from 7.34 to 35.28 after 12 days, whereas samples coated with bionanocomposite films increased from 7.34 to 16.4. For other physicochemical and microbiological properties of chicken fillets, similar improvement was observed during cold storage. It means that the bionanocomposite films could successfully improve the shelf life of the chicken fillets by at least eight days compared to the control sample.

Abstract
Biopolymer-based packaging materials have become of greater interest to the world due to their biodegradability, renewability, and biocompatibility. In recent years, numerous biopolymers-such as starch, chitosan, carrageenan, polylactic acid, etc.-have been investigated for their potential application in food packaging. Reinforcement agents such as nanofillers and active agents improve the properties of the biopolymers, making them suitable for active and intelligent packaging. Some of the packaging materials, e.g., cellulose, starch, polylactic acid, and polybutylene adipate terephthalate, are currently used in the packaging industry. The trend of using biopolymers in the packaging industry has increased immensely; therefore, many legislations have been approved by various organizations. This review article describes various challenges and possible solutions associated with food packaging materials. It covers a wide range of biopolymers used in food packaging and the limitations of using them in their pure form. Finally, a SWOT analysis is presented for biopolymers, and the future trends are discussed. Biopolymers are eco-friendly, biodegradable, nontoxic, renewable, and biocompatible alternatives to synthetic packaging materials. Research shows that biopolymer-based packaging materials are of great essence in combined form, and further studies are needed for them to be used as an alternative packaging material.

Abstract
This study aims to develop a new soluble oxidized starch-based nonionic antibacterial polymer (OCSI) featuring high antibacterial activity and non-leachability by grafting indoleacetic acid monomer (IAA) onto the oxidized corn starch (OCS). The synthesized OCSI was characterized analytically by Nuclear magnetic resonance H-spectrometer (1H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the synthesized OCSI was endowed with high thermal stability and favorable solubility, and the substitution degree reached 0.6. Besides, the disk diffusion test revealed a lowest OCSI inhibitory concentration of 5 μg disk-1, and showed significant bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli). Moreover, the antibacterial films (OCSI-PCL), featuring their good compatibility, mechanical properties, antibacterial activity, non-leachability, and low water vapor permeability (WVP), were also successfully prepared by blending OCSI with biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL). Finally, CCK-8 assay results confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of the OCSI-PCL films. Overall, this very study evidenced the applicability of the obtained oxidized starch-based biopolymers as an eco-friendly non-ionic antibacterial material and confirmed their promising applications in areas including biomedical materials, medical devices, and food packaging.

Abstract
Wound healing is an extremely intricate process involving various potential factors that can contribute towards delayed healing, one of them being bacterial colonization. The current research addresses this issue through the development of herbal antimicrobial films that can be stripped off easily, formed using an essential oil component thymol, biopolymer chitosan, and herbal plant Aloe vera. In comparison to the conventionally used nanoemulsions, thymol encapsulated in chitosan-Aloe vera (CA) film exhibited high encapsulation efficiency (95.3 %) with alleviated physical stability, as established using a high zeta potential value. The pronounced loss of crystallinity, validated using X-ray diffractometry, combined with the results obtained from Infrared and Fluorescence spectroscopic analysis, confirmed the encapsulation of thymol in CA matrix through hydrophobic interactions. This encapsulation increases the spaces between biopolymer chains facilitating greater intrusion of water, conducive for preventing the possibility of bacterial infection. Antimicrobial activity was tested against various pathogenic microbes such as Bacillus, Staphylococcus, Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and Candida. Results showed potential antimicrobial activity in the prepared films. Release test was also run at 25 °C suggesting a two-step biphasic release mechanism. The encapsulated thymol had higher biological activity, as assessed by antioxidant DPPH assay, likely due to improved dispersibility.

Abstract
Nonbiodegradable food packaging films are made from plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene, which can take hundreds of years to decompose and create environmental hazards. On the other hand, biodegradable food packaging films are made from renewable materials such as corn starch or cellulose, that degrade within a few weeks or months and prove to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly. In this work, we used corn starch hydrolyzed (CSH) with α-amylase to prepare a film with biodegradable properties. The film was tested for 60 days at different accelerated temperatures and relative humidity (RH), 13 ± 2 °C and 65 ± 5% RH, 23 ± 2 °C and 45 ± 5% RH, and 33 ± 2 °C and 30 ± 5% RH, to test its durability and stability. Soil biodegradation of the CSH film was evaluated by visual appearance, microscopic observation, weight loss, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) every 6 days. The film was found to have strong hygroscopic properties and was able to last up to 10 months if it is maintained at 20 ± 5 °C and 45 ± 5% RH. After the biodegradability test for at least 30 days, the film showed a significantly higher weight loss rate and microbial activity on the surface of the film, which indicates that the film is biodegradable. The present work recommends biodegradable CSH films as an excellent environmentally friendly choice for dried foods packaging, due to their good shelf life at room temperature, which is beneficial when shipping and storing products, but these films are not suitable for foods with high moisture content.

Abstract
Cellulose nanofibers (CNF), representing the nano-structured cellulose, have attained an extensive research attention due to their sustainability, biodegradability, nanoscale dimensions, large surface area, unique optical and mechanical performance, etc. Different lengths of CNF can lead to different extents of entanglements or network-like structures through van der Waals forces. In this study, a series of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films, reinforced with CNF of different lengths, were fabricated via conventional solvent casting technique. CNF were extracted from jute fibers by tuning the dosage of sodium hypochlorite during the TEMPO-mediated oxidation. The mechanical properties and thermal behavior were observed to be significantly improved, while the optical transparency decreased slightly (Tr. > 75%). Interestingly, the PVA/CNF20 nanocomposite films exhibited higher tensile strength of 34.22 MPa at 2 wt% filler loading than the PVA/CNF10 (32.55 MPa) while displayed higher elastic modulus of 482.75 MPa than the PVA/CNF20 films (405.80 MPa). Overall, the findings reported in this study provide a novel, simple and inexpensive approach for preparing the high-performance polymer nanocomposites with tunable mechanical properties, reinforced with an abundant and renewable material.
