Chitosan Containing Nano Zn-Organic Framework: Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Activity

Bifunctional of Fe3O4@chitosan nanocomposite as a clarifying agent and cationic flocculant on different sugar solutions as a comprehensive semi industrial application

In the sugar industry, eliminating side impurities throughout the manufacturing process is the most significant obstacle to clarifying sugar solutions. Herein, magnetic chitosan (MCS) nanocomposite was Fabricated to be used as a biodegradable, environmentally friendly clarifying agent throughout the cane juice and sugar refining processes. Fe3O4 was synthesized using the coprecipitation procedure, and then MCS was combined using a cross-linking agent. Furthermore, 14.76 emu g-1 was the maximum saturation magnetization (Ms) value. Because MCS is magnetically saturated, it may be possible to employ an external magnetic field to separate the contaminant deposited on its surface. Additionally, zeta potential analysis showed outstanding findings for MCS with a maximum value of (+) 20.7 mV, with improvement in color removal % up to 44.8% using MCS with more than 24% in color removal % compared to the traditional clarification process. Moreover, utilizing MCS reduced turbidity from 167 to 1 IU. Overall, we determined that MCS nanocomposite exhibits considerable effectiveness in the clarifying process for different sugar solutions, performing as an eco-friendly bio-sorbent and flocculating material.

Current Advances in Chitosan Nanoparticles Based Oral Drug Delivery for Colorectal Cancer Treatment

As per the WHO, colorectal cancer (CRC) caused around 935,173 deaths worldwide in 2020 in both sexes and at all ages. The available anticancer therapies including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and anticancer drugs are all associated with limited therapeutic efficacy, adverse effects and low chances. This has urged to emerge several novel therapeutic agents as potential therapies for CRC including synthetic and natural materials. Orally administrable and targeted drug delivery systems are attractive strategies for CRC therapy as they minimize the side effects, enhance the efficacy of anticancer drugs. Nevertheless, oral drug delivery till today faces several challenges like poor drug solubility, stability, and permeability. Various oral nano-based approaches and targeted drug delivery systems have been developed recently, as a result of the ability of nanoparticles to control the release of the encapsulant, drug targeting and reduce the number of dosages administered. The unique physicochemical properties of chitosan polymer assist to overcome oral drug delivery barriers and target the colon tumour cells. Chitosan-based nanocarriers offered additional improvements by enhancing the stability, targeting and bioavailability of several anti-colorectal cancer agents. Modified chitosan derivatives also facilitated CRC targeting through strengthening the protection of encapsulant against acidic and enzyme degradation of gastrointestinal track (GIT). This review aims to provide an overview of CRC pathology, therapy and the barriers against oral drug delivery. It also emphasizes the role of nanotechnology in oral drug targeted delivery system and the growing interest towards chitosan and its derivatives. The present review summarizes the relevant works to date that have studied the potential applications of chitosan-based nanocarrier towards CRC treatment.

Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Zn-Organic Framework Down-Regulates Proliferation and Up-Regulates Apoptosis and DNA Damage in Colon and Lung Cancer Cell Lines

A solvothermal technique was used to prepare a Zn–benzenetricarboxylic acid (Zn@BTC) organic framework covered with a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC/Zn@BTC). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area were applied to characterize CMC/Zn@BTC. Moreover, the anticancer, anti-migrative, anti-invasive, and anti-proliferative action of CMC/Zn@BTC nanoparticles were assessed on cancer cell lines. Apoptotic markers and DNA damage were assessed to explore the cellular and biological changes induced by CMC/Zn@BTC nanoparticles. The microscopic observation revealed that CMC controls the surface morphology and surface characteristics of the Zn@BTC. The obtained BET data revealed that the Zn@BTC nanocomposite surface area lowers from 1061 m²/g to 740 m²/g, and the pore volume decreases from 0.50 cm³/g to 0.37 cm³/g when CMC is applied to Zn@BTC nanocomposites. The cellular growth of DLD1 and A549 was suppressed by CMC/Zn@BTC, with IC50 values of 19.1 and 23.1 μg/mL, respectively. P53 expression was upregulated, and Bcl-2 expression was downregulated by CMC/Zn@BTC, which promoted the apoptotic process. Furthermore, CMC/Zn@BTC caused DNA damage in both cancer cell lines with diverse impact, 66 percent (A549) and 20 percent (DLD1) compared to cisplatin’s 52 percent reduction. CMC/Zn@BTC has anti-invasive properties and significantly reduced cellular migration. Moreover, CMC/Zn@BTC aims key proteins associated with metastasis, proliferation and programmed cellular death.
