Abstract
Electrospinning has been acknowledged as an efficient technique for the fabrication of continuous nanofibers from polymeric based materials such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), cellulose acetate (CA), chitin nanocrystals and others. These nanofibers exhibit chemical and mechanical stability, high porosity, functionality, high surface area and one-dimensional orientation which make it extremely beneficial in industrial application. In recent years, research on chitin - a biopolymer derived from crustacean and fungal cell wall - had gained interest due to its unique structural arrangement, excellent physical and chemical properties, in which make it biodegradable, non-toxic and biocompatible. Chitin has been widely utilized in various applications such as wound dressings, drug delivery, tissue engineering, membranes, food packaging and others. However, chitin is insoluble in most solvents due to its highly crystalline structure. An appropriate solvent system is required for dissolving chitin to maximize its application and produce a fine and smooth electrospun nanofiber. This review focuses on the preparation of chitin polymer solution through dissolution process using different types of solvent system for electrospinning process. The effect of processing parameters also discussed by highlighting some representative examples. Finally, the perspectives are presented regarding the current application of electrospun chitin nanofibers in selected fields.

Abstract
Water pollution caused by domestic waste oil and accidents with oil/organic spill needs immediate remediation, as such a pollution causes serious threats to health and the environment. Development of absorbent materials for the treatment of oil-polluted waters in a green and energy-efficient manner is highly desired. In this study, a green and simple strategy is proposed to prepare aerogels by hydrothermal reaction of graphene oxide (GO) dispersions using dopamine (DOPA) as the cross-linker. Concentrations of GO and DOPA were changed to determine their effects on absorption capacities. Aerogels produced had low densities ranging from 2.90 to 4.34 mg/cm3. Various organics, diesel oil, and sunflower oil were used to evaluate the absorption capacity of aerogels. It was observed that even with a mild thermal reduction at 150 °C, aerogels exhibited very high absorption capacities of up to 445 mg/mg. The produced aerogels showed high reusability (80%) and structural stability even after 10 absorption/desorption cycles. They possess great potential in oil/organic removal and water treatment based on their high absorption capacities and performances in separating organics/liquids from water.

Abstract
A combination of different eco-friendly materials prepared promising fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) through the one-step process using the microwave heating of urea with cellulose, chitosan, and biochar. Characterizations of the prepared QDs, including the investigation of their structure by infrared spectroscopy, Raman analysis, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, morphology, and optical properties, were performed. The results showed that QDs possess a small size, high UV absorption, and excitation wavelength-dependent fluorescence. The prepared QDs were also tested for metal ions removal from aqueous solutions. The adsorption at different contact times was investigated to optimize the adsorption efficiency of the prepared QDs. All QDs were found to be an ideal sorbent for Cr(II), Cu(II), Mn(II), and Pb(II). From the data, Cr(II) was more highly adsorbed than other metal ions. The results of the kinetic investigation showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model fit the adsorption process effectively. In addition, the fluorescence spectra of QDs were changed after the adsorption of metal ions; hence, the prepared QDs could be utilized in environmental sectors such as wastewater pollution detection, adsorption, and chemical sensing applications.

Abstract
Motivated by the need for efficient purification methods for the recovery of valuable resources, we developed a wire-electrospun membrane adsorber without the need for post-modification. The relationship between the fiber structure, functional-group density, and performance of electrospun sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK) membrane adsorbers was explored. The sulfonate groups enable selective binding of lysozyme at neutral pH through electrostatic interactions. Our results show a dynamic lysozyme adsorption capacity of 59.3 mg/g at 10% breakthrough, which is independent of the flow velocity confirming dominant convective mass transport. Membrane adsorbers with three different fiber diameters (measured by SEM) were fabricated by altering the concentration of the polymer solution. The specific surface area as measured with BET and the dynamic adsorption capacity were minimally affected by variations in fiber diameter, offering membrane adsorbers with consistent performance. To study the effect of functional-group density, membrane adsorbers from sPEEK with different sulfonation degrees (52%, 62%, and 72%) were fabricated. Despite the increased functional-group density, the dynamic adsorption capacity did not increase accordingly. However, in all presented cases, at least a monolayer coverage was obtained, demonstrating ample functional groups available within the area occupied by a lysozyme molecule. Our study showcases a ready-to-use membrane adsorber for the recovery of positively charged molecules, using lysozyme as a model protein, with potential applications in removing heavy metals, dyes, and pharmaceutical components from process streams. Furthermore, this study highlights factors, such as fiber diameter and functional-group density, for optimizing the membrane adsorber's performance.

Abstract
Porous polymer gels (PPGs) are characterized by inherent porosity, a predictable structure, and tunable functionality, which makes them promising for the heavy metal ion trap in environmental remediation. However, their real-world application is obstructed by the balance between performance and economy in material preparation. Development of an efficient and cost-effective approach to produce PPGs with task-specific functionality remains a significant challenge. Here, a two-step strategy to fabricate amine-enriched PPGs, NUT-21-TETA (NUT means Nanjing Tech University, TETA indicates triethylenetetramine), is reported for the first time. The NUT-21-TETA was synthesized through a simple nucleophilic substitution using two readily available and low-cost monomers, mesitylene and α, α′-dichloro-p-xylene, followed by the successful post-synthetic amine functionalization. The obtained NUT-21-TETA demonstrates an extremely high Pb2+ capacity from aqueous solution. The maximum Pb2+ capacity, qm, assessed by the Langmuir model was as high as 1211 mg/g, which is much higher than most benchmark adsorbents including ZIF-8 (1120 mg/g), FGO (842 mg/g), 732-CR resin (397 mg/g), Zeolite 13X (541 mg/g), and AC (58 mg/g). The NUT-21-TETA can be regenerated easily and recycled five times without a noticeable decrease of adsorption capacity. The excellent Pb2+ uptake and perfect reusability, in combination with a low synthesis cost, gives the NUT-21-TETA a strong potential for heavy metal ion removal.

Abstract
One important application of polymer/graphene nanocomposites is in membrane technology. In this context, promising polymer/graphene nanocomposites have been developed and applied in the production of high-performance membranes. This review basically highlights the designs, properties, and use of polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes in the field of gas separation and purification. Various polymer matrices (polysulfone, poly(dimethylsiloxane), poly(methyl methacrylate), polyimide, etc.), have been reinforced with graphene to develop nanocomposite membranes. Various facile strategies, such as solution casting, phase separation, infiltration, self-assembly, etc., have been employed in the design of gas separation polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes. The inclusion of graphene in polymeric membranes affects their morphology, physical properties, gas permeability, selectivity, and separation processes. Furthermore, the final membrane properties are affected by the nanofiller content, modification, dispersion, and processing conditions. Moreover, the development of polymer/graphene nanofibrous membranes has introduced novelty in the field of gas separation membranes. These high-performance membranes have the potential to overcome challenges arising from gas separation conditions. Hence, this overview provides up-to-date coverage of advances in polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes, especially for gas separation applications. The separation processes of polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes (in parting gases) are dependent upon variations in the structural design and processing techniques used. Current challenges and future opportunities related to polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes are also discussed.

Abstract
In the present study, the plant extract Melissa officinalis (M. officinalis) was successfully loaded in polymer fibrous materials on the basis of a biodegradable polyester-poly(L-lactide) (PLA) and biocompatible polyether-polyethylene glycol (PEG) by applying the electrospinning method. The optimal process conditions for the preparation of hybrid fibrous materials were found. The extract concentration was varied-0, 5 or 10 wt% in respect of the polymer weight, in order to study its influence on the morphology and the physico-chemical properties of the obtained electrospun materials. All the prepared fibrous mats were composed of defect-free fibers. The mean fiber diameters of the PLA, PLA/M. officinalis (5 wt%) and PLA/M. officinalis (10 wt%) were 1370 ± 220 nm, 1398 ± 233 nm and 1506 ± 242 nm, respectively. The incorporation of the M. officinalis into the fibers resulted in slight increase of the fiber diameters and in increase of the water contact angle values to 133°. The presence of the polyether in the fabricated fibrous material assisted the wetting of the materials imparting them with hydrophilicity (the value of the water contact angle become 0°). Extract-containing fibrous materials displayed strong antioxidant activity as determined by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate free radical method. The DPPH solution color changed to yellow and the absorbance of the DPPH radical dropped by 88.7% and 91% after being in contact with PLA/M. officinalis and PLA/PEG/M. officinalis mats, respectively. These features revealed the M. officinalis-containing fibrous biomaterials promising candidates for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and biomedical use.

Abstract
In this work we investigated the synthesis and the characterization of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) stabilized in air, made in a 5:1 ratio, used as sorbent for the solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in plasma samples and the following quantification in UHPLC-PDA. Preliminary analyses of viscosity were carried out on the polymer solution to be sure about the electrospinability. Characterizations were performed on the electrospun membrane to evaluate the morphology (SEM scanning electron microscopy and AFM atomic force microscopy), the thermal degradation behavior (TGA thermogravimetric analysis), the porosity and the surface area (BET, Brunauer Emmett Teller), and the quantitative and qualitative distribution of atomic structures (FTIR infrared analysis in Fourier transform and EDX Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis). A solid-phase extraction method was developed by studying parameters such as the amount of sorbent and the pH of the sample. Finally, a UHPLC-PDA method for the analysis of fluoroquinolones was developed and validated in accordance with the guidelines and successfully applied. The use of the prepared sorbent combined with UHPLC-PDA has allowed the development of a method whose strengths are its speed, accuracy, sensitivity, and high recoveries.

Abstract
This work aimed to use the electrospinning technique to obtain PBAT/PLA polymer fibers, with the semiconductors rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2-R) and magnetite iron oxide (Fe3O4), in order to promote the photocatalytic degradation of environmental contaminants. The parameters used in the electrospinning process to obtain the fibers were distance from the needle to the collecting target of 12 cm, flow of 1 mL h-1 and voltage of 14 kV. The best mass ratio of semiconductors in the polymeric fiber was defined from a 22 experimental design, and the values obtained were 10% TiO2-R, 1% Fe3O4 at pH 7.0. Polymer fibers were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) techniques. SEM measurements indicated a reduction in fiber diameter after the incorporation of semiconductors; for the PBAT/PLA fiber, the average diameter was 0.9466 ± 0.2490 µm, and for the fiber with TiO2-R and Fe3O4 was 0.6706 ± 0.1447 µm. In the DSC, DRX, TGA and FTIR analyses, it was possible to identify the presence of TiO2-R and Fe3O4 in the fibers, as well as their interactions with polymers, demonstrating changes in the crystallinity and degradation temperature of the material. These fibers were tested against Reactive Red 195 dye, showing an efficiency of 64.0% within 24 h, showing promise for photocatalytic degradation of environmental contaminants.

Abstract
Nanofiber membranes have recently been considered as promising supports for the immobilization of microorganisms due to the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of electrostatic spinning technology and the ability to control fiber morphology, such as obtaining higher surface area and porosity. In this study, electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/attapulgite (PVA/SA/ATP) nanofiber membrane was prepared as support for immobilized Bacillus cereus LY-1 for diesel degradation in an aqueous medium and a significant improvement in diesel removal efficiency was realized. The effect of modified ATP concentration on diesel removal was investigated. The results showed that the nanofiber membranes complexed with cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and 1% ATP (w/w) had the best capacity for diesel removing. When the initial diesel concentration was 2 g L-1, about 87.8% of diesel was removed by the immobilized LY-1 cells after 72 h. Immobilization of bacteria improves the ability of bacteria to survive in adverse environments. Immobilized LY-1 cells maintain the nature to remove diesel at high salinity or pH range of 6-9. Furthermore, the reusability of the LY-1 cells-immobilized PVA/SA/CTAB-ATP nanofiber membrane was tested. A diesel removal rate of 64.9% could be achieved after 4 times of use. PVA/SA/CTAB-ATP nanofibrous membranes with immobilized LY-1 cells are feasible, economical and environmentally friendly for remediation of diesel contamination in the aqueous medium, and have potential applications in the future.

Abstract
Wastewater generated from industries seriously impacts the environment. Conventional biological and physiochemical treatment methods for wastewater containing organic molecules have some limitations. Therefore, identifying other alternative methods or processes that are more suitable to degrade organic molecules and lower chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater is necessary. Heterogeneous Fenton processes and persulfate (PS) oxidation are advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that degrade organic pollutants via reactive radical species. Therefore, in this study, limonite powder was incorporated into porous regenerated chitosan fibers and further used as a heterogeneous catalyst to decompose methylene blue (MB) via sulfate radical-based AOPs. Limonite was used as a heterogeneous catalyst in this process to generate the persulfate radicals (SO4-·) that initiate the decolorization process. Limonite-chitosan fibers were produced to effectively recover the limonite powder so that the catalyst can be reused repeatedly. The formation of limonite-chitosan fibers viewed under a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) showed that the limonite powder was well distributed in both the surface and cross-section area. The effectiveness of limonite-chitosan fibers as a catalyst under PS activation achieved an MB decolorization of 78% after 14 min. The stability and reusability of chitosan-limonite fibers were evaluated and measured in cycles 1 to 10 under optimal conditions. After 10 cycles of repeated use, the limonite-chitosan fiber maintained its performance up to 86%, revealing that limonite-containing chitosan fibers are a promising reusable catalyst material.

Abstract
Functionalized electrospun polymer microfibrous membranes were fabricated by electrospinning and further surface-functionalized with magnetic iron oxide (FexOy) nanoparticles to yield magnetoactive nanocomposite fibrous adsorbents. The latter were characterized in respect to their morphology, mechanical properties and magnetic properties while they were further evaluated as substrates for removing Ofloxacin (OFL) from synthetic aqueous media and secondary urban wastewater (UWW) under varying physicochemical parameters, including the concentration of the pharmaceutical pollutant, the solution pH and the membranes' magnetic content. The magnetic-functionalized fibrous adsorbents demonstrated significantly enhanced adsorption efficacy in comparison to their non-functionalized fibrous analogues while their magnetic properties enabled their magnetic recovery and regeneration.

Abstract
Rapid and portable water purification (RPWP) technologies, helping travelers survive in the wild, have attracted increasing interest due to increasing activities, such as exploration, field hiking, and excursion. Field water is usually pathogenic because of various soluble and insoluble contaminants. In this study, fish-gill-like biomimetic core-shell-structured nanofiber membranes are designed and synthesized by an in situ oxidation polymerization coating process. A polyimide nanofiber membrane and a polypyrrole (PPy) coating layer are employed as a core and shell, respectively. The biomimetic membranes exhibit dual-functional capacities: a rapid removal of insoluble contaminants owing to the highly porous network and broad-spectrum adsorption of soluble contaminants enabled by the PPy shell. Model studies confirm the excellent ability of the membranes to purify Cr(VI)-contaminated water to drinkable water with a safe capacity of ∼1415 L m-2. Actual application tests show that the membrane can efficiently remove coliform and suspended solids in a muddy water sample taken from a river in Suzhou, China. This study provides a promising route for the design of a single-layer membrane with dual functions for highly efficient RPWP.

Abstract
At present, the situation of air pollution is still serious, and research on air filtration is still crucial. For the nanofiber air filtration membrane, the diameter, porosity, tensile strength, and hydrophilicity of the nanofiber will affect the filtration performance and stability. In this paper, based on the far-field electrospinning process and the performance effect mechanism of the stacked structure fiber membrane, nanofiber membrane was prepared by selecting the environmental protection, degradable and pollution-free natural polysaccharide biopolymer pullulan, and polyvinylidene fluoride polymer with strong hydrophobicity and high impact strength. By combining two kinds of fiber membranes with different fiber diameter and porosity, a three-layer composite nanofiber membrane with better hydrophobicity, higher tensile strength, smaller fiber diameter, and better filtration performance was prepared. Performance characterization showed that this three-layer composite nanofiber membrane had excellent air permeability and filtration efficiency, and the filtration efficiency of particles above PM 2.5 reached 99.9%. This study also provides important reference values for the preparation of high-efficiency composite nanofiber filtration membrane.

Abstract
Due to the versatility of its features and capabilities, chitosan generated from marine crustacean waste is gaining importance and appeal in a wide variety of applications. It was initially used in pharmaceutical and medical applications due to its antibacterial, biocompatible, and biodegradable properties. However, as the demand for innovative materials with environmentally benign properties has increased, the application range of chitosan has expanded, and it is now used in a variety of everyday applications. The most exciting aspect of the chitosan is its bactericidal properties against pathogens, which are prevalent in contaminated water and cause a variety of human ailments. Apart from antimicrobial and water filtration applications, chitosan is used in dentistry, in water filtration membranes to remove metal ions and some heavy metals from industrial effluents, in microbial fuel cell membranes, and in agriculture to maintain moisture in fruits and leaves. It is also used in skin care products and cosmetics as a moisturizer, in conjunction with fertilizer to boost plant immunity, and as a bi-adhesive for bonding woods and metals. As it has the capacity to increase the life span of food items and raw meat, it is an unavoidable component in food packing and preservation. The numerous applications of chitosan are reviewed in this brief study, as well as the approaches used to incorporate chitosan alongside traditional materials and its effect on the outputs.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) was heavily used in the adsorption process of various heavy metal ions (such as copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) ions), resulting in a huge waste quantity of graphene oxide@metal ions complex. In this research, the authors try to solve this issue. Herein, the GO surface was loaded with divalent (Cu2+) and trivalent (Fe3+) heavy metal ions as a simulated waste of the heavy metal in various removal processes to form GO@Cu and (GO@Fe) composites, respectively. After that, the previous nanocomposites were used to remove cationic methylene blue (MB) dye. The prepared composites were characterized with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transition electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR), Raman, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS) before and after the adsorption process. Various adsorption factors of the two composites towards MB-dye were investigated. Based on the adsorption isotherm information, the adsorption process of MB-dye is highly fitted with the Langmuir model with maximum capacities (mg g-1) (384.62, GO@Cu) and (217.39, GO@Fe). According to the thermodynamic analysis, the adsorption reaction of MB-species over the GO@Cu is exothermic and, in the case of GO@Fe, is endothermic. Moreover, the two composites presented excellent selectivity of adsorption of the MB-dye from the MB/MO mixture.

Abstract
In this work, the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions and the organic dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) was investigated using magnetite talc (Fe3O4@Talc) nanocomposite. Different characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to demonstrate the physical and chemical properties of the fabricated Fe3O4@Talc nanocomposite. In addition, the adsorption isothermic, kinetic, and thermodynamic properties were illustrated. The results demonstrate that the investigated adsorption processes obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model for Cr(VI) and the Freundlich isotherm model for ARS dye, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.5 and 11.76 mg·g−1, respectively, controlled by pseudo second-order kinetics. Regeneration and reusability studies demonstrated that the prepared Fe3O4@Talc nanocomposite is a promising and stable adsorbent with considerable reusability potential.
