Abstract
Cross-linking chitosan at room and subzero temperature using a series of diglycidyl ethers of glycols (DEs)-ethylene glycol (EGDE), 1,4-butanediol (BDDE), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGDE) has been investigated to demonstrate that DEs can be a more powerful alternative to glutaraldehyde (GA) for fabrication of biocompatible chitosan cryogels with tunable properties. Gelation of chitosan with DEs was significantly slower than with GA, allowing formation of cryogels with larger pores and higher permeability, more suitable for flow-through applications and cell culturing. Increased hydration of the cross-links with increased DE chain length weakened intermolecular hydrogen bonding in chitosan and improved cryogel elasticity. At high cross-linking ratios (DE:chitosan 1:4), the toughness and compressive strength of the cryogels decreased in the order EGDE > BDDE > PEGDE. By varying the DE chain length and concentration, permeable chitosan cryogels with elasticity moduli from 10.4 ± 0.8 to 41 ± 3 kPa, toughness from 2.68 ± 0.5 to 8.3 ± 0.1 kJ/m3, and compressive strength at 75% strain from 11 ± 2 to 33 ± 4 kPa were fabricated. Susceptibility of cryogels to enzymatic hydrolysis was identified as the parameter most sensitive to cross-linking conditions. Weight loss of cryogels increased with increased DE chain length, and degradation rate of PEGDE-cross-linked chitosan decreased 612-fold, when the cross-linker concentration increased 20-fold.

Abstract
Potentially toxic metal ions, such as hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), present in water concern the population's health due to their persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and high toxicity. Highly porous materials based on polysaccharides are promising technologies for metal removal due to their high surface area, biodegradability, and low toxicity. This study evaluated the effect of concentrations of microcellulose (0.5, 1, and 1.5 %) and glutaraldehyde (1, 2, and 3 %) in the adsorption capacity and mechanical properties of chitosan foams. The developed foams exhibited a three-dimensional structure with interconnected pores. Compared to foams without microcellulose, adding 1.5 % microcellulose increased up to 180 % in maximum stress supported by the foams and up to 135 % in Young's modulus. However, Cr6+ sorption capacity decreased with increasing microcellulose and crosslinking agent content due to the occupation of amino groups. Still, the foams exhibited a highly favorable sorption behavior, and the Sips isotherm model provided the best fit to the experimental data. The maximum sorption capacity reached approximately 1.4 mmol·g-1 at pH 4.0 and 25 °C. The foam structural integrity, enhanced mechanical properties, and efficient sorption capacity make them viable alternatives for environmentally friendly and cost-effective treatment of water contaminated with Cr6+ ions.

Abstract
There is a growing incidence in the presence of emergent pollutants like the pesticides and pharmaceuticals in water bodies. The matter of environmental concern is their synthetic and persistent nature which has resulted in induced toxicity/damaging effect to the vital functioning of the different organs in the aquatic community. Traditional adsorbents have exhibited limitations like low stability and minimum reuse ability. Composites of such adsorbents with polysaccharides have demonstrated distinct features like improved surface area, porosity, adsorptivity; improved reusability and structural integrity; improved mechanical strength, thermal stability when applied for the removal of the emergent pollutants. The biocompatibility and biodegradability of such fabricated composites is established; thereby making the water treatment process cost effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present review has dealt with an in-depth, up-dated literature compilation of traditional as well as polysaccharide based composite adsorbents and addressed their performance evaluation for the removal of pharmaceuticals and pesticides from wastewater. A comparative study has revealed the merits of polysaccharide based composites and discussions have been made with a focus on future research directions in the related area.

Abstract
Environmental contamination with pesticides occurs at a global scale as a result of prolonged usage and, therefore, their removal by low-cost and environmentally friendly systems is actively demanded. In this context, our study was directed to investigate the feasibility of using some self-assembled hydrogels, comprising chitosan (CS) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) or dialdehyde (DA)-CMC, for the removal of four complex fungicide formulations, namely Melody Compact (MC), Dithane (Dt), Curzate Manox (CM), and Cabrio®Top (CT). Porous CS/CMC and CS/DA-CMC hydrogels were prepared as discs by combining the semi-dissolution acidification sol-gel transition method with a freeze-drying approach. The obtained CS/CMC and CS/DA-CMC hydrogels were characterized by gel fraction yield, FTIR, SEM, swelling kinetics, and uniaxial compression tests. The batch-sorption studies indicated that the fungicides' removal efficiency (RE%) by the CS/CMC hydrogels was increased significantly with increasing sorbent doses reaching 94%, 93%, 66% and 48% for MC, Dt, CM and CT, respectively, at 0.2 g sorbent dose. The RE values were higher for the hydrogels prepared using DA-CMC than for those prepared using non-oxidized CMC when initial fungicide concentrations of 300 mg/L or 400 mg/L were used. Our results indicated that CS/DA-CMC hydrogels could be promising biosorbents for mitigating pesticide contamination of aqueous environments.

Abstract
Designing of economically feasible and recyclable polysaccharide-based materials with thiourea functional groups for removal of specific metal ions such as Ag(I), Au(I), Pb(II) or Hg(II) remains a major challenge for environmental applications. Here, we introduce ultra-lightweight thiourea-chitosan (CSTU) aerogels engineered by combining successive freeze-thawing cycles with covalent formaldehyde-mediated cross-linking and lyophilization. All aerogels exhibited outstanding low densities (0.0021-0.0103 g/cm3) and remarkable high specific surface areas (416.64-447.26 m2/g), outperforming the common polysaccharide-based aerogels. Benefitting from their superior structural features (honeycomb interconnected pores and high porosity), CSTU aerogels demonstrate fast sorption rates and excellent performance in sorption of heavy metal ions from highly-concentrated single or binary-component mixtures (1.11 mmol Ag (I)/g and 0.48 mmol Pb(II)/g). A remarkable recycling stability was observed after five sorption-desorption-regeneration cycles when the removal efficiency was up to 80 %. These results support the high potential of CSTU aerogels in the treatment of metal-containing wastewater. Moreover, the Ag(I)-loaded CSTU aerogels exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains, the killing rate being around 100 %. This data points towards the potential application of developed aerogels in circular economy, by employing the spent Ag(I)-loaded aerogels in the biological decontamination of waters.

Abstract
Biomass-derived materials with multiple features are seldom reported so far. Herein, new chitosan (CS) sponges with complementary functions for point-of-use healthcare applications were prepared by glutaraldehyde (GA) cross-linking and tested for antibacterial activity, antioxidant properties, and controlled delivery of plant-derived polyphenols. Their structural, morphological, and mechanical properties were thoroughly assessed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and uniaxial compression measurements, respectively. The main features of sponges were modulated by varying the CS concentration, cross-linking ratio, and gelation conditions (either cryogelation or room-temperature gelation). They exhibited complete water-triggered shape recovery after compression, remarkable antibacterial properties against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes)) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium)) strains, as well as good radical scavenging activity. The release profile of a plant-derived polyphenol, namely curcumin (CCM), was investigated at 37 °C in simulated gastrointestinal media. It was found that CCM release was dependent on the composition and the preparation strategy of sponges. By linearly fitting the CCM kinetic release data from the CS sponges with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic models, a pseudo-Fickian diffusion release mechanism was predicted.

Abstract
Nowadays, pollution has become the main bottleneck towards sustainable technological development due to its detrimental implications in human and ecosystem health. Removal of pollutants from the surrounding environment is a hot research area worldwide; diverse technologies and materials are being continuously developed. To this end, bio-based composite hydrogels as sorbents have received extensive attention in recent years because of advantages such as high adsorptive capacity, controllable mechanical properties, cost effectiveness, and potential for upscaling in continuous flow installations. In this review, we aim to provide an up-to-date analysis of the literature on recent accomplishments in the design of polysaccharide-based composite hydrogels for removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oxyanions from wastewater. The correlation between the constituent polysaccharides (chitosan, cellulose, alginate, starch, pectin, pullulan, xanthan, salecan, etc.), engineered composition (presence of other organic and/or inorganic components), and sorption conditions on the removal performance of addressed pollutants will be carefully scrutinized. Particular attention will be paid to the sustainability aspects in the selected studies, particularly to composite selectivity and reusability, as well as to their use in fixed-bed columns and real wastewater applications.

Abstract
In this work, we convert a plastic waste, i.e., polystyrene (PS), into a sorbent by a simple sulfonation process. The sulfonation time was optimized and the structures of the resulting sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray and contact angle tests. The results showed that the sulfonation time of 7 h can introduce abundant sulfonic groups and preserve the self-standing structure. Additionally, the SPS has a three-dimensional porous structure and hydrophilic surface because of the presence of numerous sulfonic groups, which could serve as effective binding sites for immobilizing varying pollutants. Furthermore, as a proof-of-concept, the adsorption performance of the SPS foams was evaluated using three pollutants, namely Pb2+, lysozyme and methylene blue. The adsorption isotherms were fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich models, while the kinetics of the adsorption processes were analyzed using the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion equations. It was found that the adsorption isotherms of Pb2+ and lysozyme can be better described by the Langmuir model, leading to maximum equilibrium adsorption uptakes of 10.5 and 15.7 mg g−1 for the adsorption of Pb2+ and lysozyme, respectively. Importantly, the pollutant-saturated SPS is readily regenerated by acid washing, and the recovered sorbents exhibit outstanding cyclic performance. The abundant availability of feedstock, facile preparation and regeneration processes render the SPS foams a promising sorbent for practical applications.
