Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Thermoplastic Crystallizable Polyimide-Based Nanocomposites Filled with Carbon Nanotubes: Computer Simulations and Experiments

Preparation and Characterization of High-Density Polyethylene with Alternating Lamellar Stems Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Mechanical recycling is the most efficient way to reduce plastic pollution due to its ability to maintain the intrinsic properties of plastics as well as provide economic benefits involved in other types of recycling. On the other hand, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide key insights into structural deformation, lamellar crystalline axis (c-axis) orientations, and reorganization, which are essential for understanding plastic behavior during structural deformations. To simulate the influence of structural deformations in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during mechanical recycling while paying attention to obtaining an alternate lamellar orientation, the authors examine a specific way of preparing stacked lamella-oriented HDPE united atom (UA) models, starting from a single 1000 UA (C1000) chain of crystalline conformations and then packing such chain conformations into 2-chain, 10-chain, 15-chain, and 20-chain semi-crystalline models. The 2-chain, 10-chain, and 15-chain models yielded HDPE microstructures with the desired alternating lamellar orientations and entangled amorphous segments. On the other hand, the 20-chain model displayed multi-nucleus crystal growth instead of the lamellar-stack orientation. Structural characterization using a one-dimensional density profile and local order parameter {P2(r)} analyses demonstrated lamellar-stack orientation formation. All semi-crystalline models displayed the total density (ρ) and degree of crystallinity (χ) range of 0.90-0.94 g/cm-3 and ≥42-45%, respectively. A notable stress yield (σ_yield) ≈ 100-120 MPa and a superior elongation at break (ε_break) ~250% was observed under uniaxial strain deformation along the lamellar-stack orientation. Similarly, during the MD simulations, the microstructure phase change represented the average number of entanglements per chain (). From the present study, it can be recommended that the 10-chain alternate lamellar-stack orientation model is the most reliable miniature model for HDPE that can mimic industrially relevant plastic behavior in various conditions.

The Effect of Mechanical Elongation on the Thermal Conductivity of Amorphous and Semicrystalline Thermoplastic Polyimides: Atomistic Simulations

Over the past few decades, the enhancement of polymer thermal conductivity has attracted considerable attention in the scientific community due to its potential for the development of new thermal interface materials (TIM) for both electronic and electrical devices. The mechanical elongation of polymers may be considered as an appropriate tool for the improvement of heat transport through polymers without the necessary addition of nanofillers. Polyimides (PIs) in particular have some of the best thermal, dielectric, and mechanical properties, as well as radiation and chemical resistance. They can therefore be used as polymer binders in TIM without compromising their dielectric properties. In the present study, the effects of uniaxial deformation on the thermal conductivity of thermoplastic PIs were examined for the first time using atomistic computer simulations. We believe that this approach will be important for the development of thermal interface materials based on thermoplastic PIs with improved thermal conductivity properties. Current research has focused on the analysis of three thermoplastic PIs: two semicrystalline, namely BPDA-P3 and R-BAPB; and one amorphous, ULTEM^TM. To evaluate the impact of uniaxial deformation on the thermal conductivity, samples of these PIs were deformed up to 200% at a temperature of 600 K, slightly above the melting temperatures of BPDA-P3 and R-BAPB. The thermal conductivity coefficients of these PIs increased in the glassy state and above the glass transition point. Notably, some improvement in the thermal conductivity of the amorphous polyimide ULTEM^TM was achieved. Our study demonstrates that the thermal conductivity coefficient is anisotropic in different directions with respect to the deformation axis and shows a significant increase in both semicrystalline and amorphous PIs in the direction parallel to the deformation. Both types of structural ordering (self-ordering of semicrystalline PI and mechanical elongation) led to the same significant increase in thermal conductivity coefficient.

Effects of Hygrothermal Aging and Cyclic Compressive Loading on the Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Conductive Composites

Conductive polymers and their composites have been widely applied in different applications, including sensing applications. Herein, we constructed a conductive composite of polypropylene, carbon black, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PP/CB/MWCNTs) to experimentally study its sensing behaviors in a humid thermal environment. The as-synthesized PP/CB/MWCNT composite polymer was immersed in simulated sweat in deionized water at 67 °C. Regarding their electrical and mechanical properties, different experimental parameters, such as cyclic loading and hygrothermal aging, were investigated by recording the mass changes, carrying out strain sensing experiments, and performing dynamic mechanical analyses before and after the immersion test. The results reveal that the filler content improved the rate of water absorption but decreased at higher concentrations of the solution. The sensitivity of the material decreased by up to 53% after the hygrothermal ageing and cyclic loading. Moreover, the sensitivity under cyclic compression loading decreased with an increasing immersion time, qualitatively illustrated by an effective quantum tunneling effect and conducting path model. Finally, hygrothermal aging reduced the composite's glass transition temperature. This reduction was the most significant for specimens immersed in deionized water, ascribed to the moisture absorption, reducing the molecular chain activity.
