Chitosan Modified by Kombucha-Derived Bacterial Cellulose: Rheological Behavior and Properties of Convened Biopolymer Films

Dewatering and drying of Kombucha Bacterial Cellulose for preparation of biodegradable film for food packaging

Kombucha Bacterial Cellulose (KBC), obtained from waste products of kombucha fermentation, has potential applications in diverse fields. The present study used tea waste as a raw material for producing kombucha-like beverages and bacterial cellulose (BC). The in-situ dewatering and drying operations were performed to remove the high-water content from fermented KBC. Herein, the performance of BC in pressure-driven separation has been investigated as a function of dewatering pressure, drying temperature, and drying time in a multifunctional filtration cell. The Central Composite Design (CCD) was used to optimize the dewatering and drying parameters. The optimum conditions were found to be 4 bar pressure, 99 °C drying temperature, and 5 min drying time with a desirability value of 0.921. The predicted response values agreed with actual responses within 2.3-2.7 %. The dried films were prepared at optimized conditions and used to investigate thickness, density, mechanical properties, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy. The properties of KBC film varied as fermentation days increased. The KBC films' transparency decreased as thickness and density increased. The KBC film exhibits excellent mechanical properties such as tensile strength, maximum load, extension at the break, load at the break, and Young's modulus. The KBC films have been reported to be biodegradable and non-toxic and may be used for food packaging. Moreover, the present study successfully demonstrated that KBC packaging material could extend the shelf life of tomatoes by 13-15 days under accelerated conditions.

Bacterial cellulose in cosmetic innovation: A review

Bacterial cellulose (BC) emerges as a versatile biomaterial with a myriad of industrial applications, particularly within the cosmetics sector. The absence of hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin in its pure cellulose structure enables favorable interactions with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic biopolymers. This enhances compatibility with active ingredients commonly employed in cosmetics, such as antioxidants, vitamins, and botanical extracts. Recent progress in BC-based materials, which encompasses membranes, films, gels, nanocrystals, and nanofibers, highlights its significant potential in cosmetics. In this context, BC not only serves as a carrier for active ingredients but also plays a crucial role as a structural agent in formulations. The sustainability of BC production and processing is a central focus, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to strengthen scalability and cost-effectiveness. Future research endeavors, including the exploration of novel cultivation strategies and functionalization techniques, aim to maximize BC's therapeutic potential while broadening its scope in personalized skincare regimes. Therefore, this review emphasizes the crucial contribution of BC to the cosmetics sector, underlining its role in fostering innovation, sustainability, and ethical skincare practices. By integrating recent research findings and industry trends, this review proposes a fresh approach to advancing both skincare science and environmental responsibility in the cosmetics industry.

Physical Properties and Release Profiles of Chitosan Mixture Films Containing Salicin, Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid

Chitosan (CS) has gained considerable attention due to its distinctive properties and its broad spectrum of potential applications, spanning cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and biomedical uses. In this study, we characterized thin films comprising chitosan mixtures containing salicin (SAL) and glycerin (GLY), both with and without hyaluronic acid (HA) as active ingredients. Characterization was achieved through release studies of SAL, infrared spectroscopy, microscopy techniques (AFM and SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). CS/GLY/SAL and CS/GLY/SAL/HA mixture films were fabricated using the solvent evaporation technique. We probed interactions between the components in the chitosan mixtures via infrared analysis. The concentration of released salicin was monitored at various time intervals in a phosphate buffer (PBS) at pH 5.5 using HPLC. The linear regression analysis for the calibration graph showed a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9996) in the working concentration range of 5-205 mg/dm3. Notably, the release of SAL reached its peak after 20 min. Furthermore, the introduction of HA caused changes in the films' morphology, but their roughness remained largely unchanged. The results obtained were compared, indicating that the release of SAL in the CS mixture films is sufficient for diverse applications, including wound-healing materials and cosmetic beauty masks.
