The Effect of Accelerated Aging on the Molecular Weight and Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Polyester Yarns Containing Ceramic Particles

Interfacial interactions of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics and malachite green, tetracycline in aqueous environments

Polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) are one of pivotal nondegradable emerging pollutant. Here the variation of the surface physicochemical characteristics of PET-MPs with UV irradiation aging and the adsorption behaviors of PET-MPs in malachite green (MG), tetracycline (TC) solution and the effect of coexisting Cu(II) were comparatively investigated. The yellowing, weakened hydrophobicity, and increased surface negative charge, crystallinity degree and oxygen-containing functional groups were manifested specifically by the aged PET-MPs. Different from the single system, the hydrophobic interaction and metal ion bridging complexation dominated the adsorption of MG and TC, respectively, in the binary solution. While in the ternary solution, cationic ion competition of Cu(II) with MG decreased its capture, and the formation of PET-Cu(II)-TC ternary complexes promoted TC adsorption. Moreover, PET-MPs could serve as an efficient vector for MG and TC in MG/TC/Cu(II) ternary system, indicating PET-MPs tend to carry more varieties in the complex environment, that may increase the environmental risk of PET-MPs.

The Influence of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Particle Size and Crystalline Form on the Microstructure and UV Protection Factor of Polyester Substrates

The inclusion of particles in a polymeric substrate to achieve certain properties is a well-known practice. In the case of textile substrates, this practice may deeply affect the structure of the produced yarns, as even a filament with no textile applications can be obtained. In this manuscript, titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles were incorporated into polyester (PET) chips and the influence of these fillers on the properties of yarn and fabric, and the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) was assessed. For this purpose, rutile and anatase crystalline forms of TiO2, as well as the size of the particles, were evaluated. Moreover, parameters such as mechanical properties, orientation of the macromolecules and thermal behavior were analyzed to ensure that the textile grade is maintained throughout the production process. The results showed that the inclusion of micro- and nanoparticles of TiO2 decreases the molecular weight and tenacity of PET. Also, although orientation and crystallinity varied during the textile process, the resulting heatset fabrics did not present important differences in those parameters. Finally, the attainment of textile-grade PET-TiO2 fabrics with UPF indexes of 50+ with both rutile and anatase and micro- and nano-sized TiO2 forms was demonstrated.

Changes in Mechanical Properties of Fabrics Made of Standard and Recycled Polyester Yarns Due to Aging

Over the years, the demands on the durability and quality of polyester fabrics used for sportswear have increased, as these fabrics contribute to athletes' performance. At the same time, the use of recycled polyester material is increasingly being promoted for environmental reasons. This study focused on investigating the properties of standard and recycled polyester fabrics before and after aging according to the developed aging protocol. The surface morphology, thickness, elongation at break, force at break, bursting force, mass loss due to abrasion and moisture management of the fabrics were tested. The results showed that the aging process had no influence on the surface changes in the fabrics. More specifically, there were neither surface cracks on the fibre surface nor chemical changes. The highest decrease in force at break for standard polyester fabrics with elastane was up to 26%, and up to 15% for fabrics made of recycled polyester. The loss of mass due to abrasion was greater for recycled polyester than for standard polyester fabrics. The average ability of the fabrics to absorb moisture decreased by up to 23% after aging, while the wetting time increased by up to 30%, with the highest increase observed in recycled fabrics.
