Modification of Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes by Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly as Observed by Small Angle X-ray Scattering

Effect of Counterions on the Interaction among Concentrated Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes

The effect of counterions on interactions among spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) was systematically investigated by rheology, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The SPB particles consist of a solid polystyrene (PS) core with a diameter of ca.100 nm and a chemically grafted poly-(acrylic acid) (PAA) brush layer. Metal ions of different valences (Na+, Mg2+ and Al3+) were used as counterions to study the interactions among concentrated SPBs. The so-called "structure factor peak" in SAXS, the "local ordered structure peak" in WAXS and rheological properties indicated the interactions among concentrated SPBs. Combining SAXS, WAXS and rheology, the formation mechanism of the local ordered structure among PAA chains in the overlapped area of adjacent SPB, which was generated due to the bridge function of counterions, was confirmed. In contrast, excessive counterions shielded the electrostatic interaction among PAA chains and destroyed the local ordered structure. This work enriches our understanding of the polyelectrolyte assembly in concentrated SPBs under the effect of counterions and lays the foundations for SPB applications.

Coacervation of Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes with Additional Polyelectrolytes Bearing Positive or Negative Charges

By combining small-angle X-ray scattering, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and rheology, the effect of additional polyelectrolyte chains on interactions among spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) was systematically investigated both on microscopic and macroscopic levels. The negatively charged poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) chains and positively charged poly(dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) chains were used as additional polyelectrolyte chains to investigate the local ordered structure and the "polyelectrolyte peak" among SPB. Interestingly, coacervation appeared in the SPB emulsion while introducing additional free polyelectrolyte chains. The addition of excess positively charged PDDA chains would lead to the transformation of the SPB emulsion from the coacervation to the aggregation, while it has not been observed in the case of PAA chains. Moreover, it was further confirmed that the specific local ordered structure was caused by the electrostatic interaction among polyelectrolyte chains of adjacent SPB. This work could enrich our understanding of polyelectrolyte assembly in concentrated SPB, thereby greatly broadening the application fields of SPB.

Interaction among Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes in Concentrated Aqueous Solution

Interaction among concentrated spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) dispersions in water was systematically investigated by means of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and rheological methods. SPB consist of a core of polystyrene (PS) and a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) brush shell. The "polyelectrolyte peak" appeared in SAXS spectra and was observed in WAXS curves for the first time. The size of the polyelectrolyte peak and the rheological properties of SPB were found to be strongly effected by SPB concentration, pH, and ionic strength. Combined with SAXS, WAXS, and rheological results, it is confirmed that the polyelectrolyte peak is originated from local ordered structures of polyelectrolyte chains bridged by counterions in the overlapping area among SPB driven by electrostatic interactions.

Multilayer capsules made of weak polyelectrolytes: a review on the preparation, functionalization and applications in drug delivery

Multilayer capsules have been of great interest for scientists and medical communities in multidisciplinary fields of research, such as drug delivery, sensing, biomedicine, theranostics and gene therapy. The most essential attributes of a drug delivery system are considered to be multi-functionality and stimuli responsiveness against a range of external and internal stimuli. Apart from the highly explored strong polyelectrolytes, weak polyelectrolytes offer great versatility with a highly controllable architecture, unique stimuli responsiveness and easy tuning of the properties for intracellular delivery of cargo. This review describes the progress in the preparation, functionalization and applications of capsules made of weak polyelectrolytes or their combination with biopolymers. The selection of a sacrificial template for capsule formation, the driving forces involved, the encapsulation of a variety of cargo and release based on different internal and external stimuli have also been addressed. We describe recent perspectives and obstacles of weak polyelectrolyte/biopolymer systems in applications such as therapeutics, biosensing, bioimaging, bioreactors, vaccination, tissue engineering and gene delivery. This review gives an emerging outlook on the advantages and unique responsiveness of weak polyelectrolyte based systems that can enable their widespread use in potential applications.

Dynamic Self-Assembly of Polyelectrolyte Composite Nanomaterial Film

The aim of this study is not only to investigate the feasibility of using PAH (polyallylamine hydrochloride) and PSS (poly styrene-4-sulfonic acid sodium salt) to prepare a film via a layer by layer self-assembly process entrained with silver nanoparticles, but also to show that the silver nanoparticles crystalline structure can be defined and deposited on the surface of the substrate in the desired alignment structure and manner, which is of great help to research on the LBL method in the cellulose field. The effect of outermost layer variation, assembly layers, and composition of multilayers on the formation of the LBL structure on a nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) substrate was investigated. The deposition of PAH and PSS was monitored by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The morphology of the LBL film layers was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Furthermore, thermal degradation properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and physical properties of multilayer films were tested by a universal mechanical tester. The results reveal that PAH and PSS can be readily deposited on a NFC/PVA substrate by using LBL methodology to prepare self-assembled polyelectrolyte multilayer films. The surface morphology of the LBL composite changed from negative to positive charged depending on the final LBL treatment. Also, according to SEM and AFM analysis, silver nanoparticles were well dispersed in the (PAH/PSS) film, which significantly improved the thermal stability of the composite films.

Facile Fluorescence "Turn on" Sensing of Lead Ions in Water via Carbon Nanodots Immobilized in Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes

Heavy metal detection has become very important for the protection of water resource. In this work, a novel controllable probe is presented for the sensitive detection of Pb2+ in aqueous solutions. The probe was synthesized via the immobilization of surface functionalized carbon dots (named as CAEA-Hs) into the shell of the spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB). The fluorescence of CAEA-H was firstly "turned off" via electrostatic interaction induced quenching. Based on the aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE), the fluorescence of the immobilized CAEA-H could be specifically turned on via the aggregation of the SPB particles. This fluorescence "turn on" sensor could selectively detect Pb2+ among five different metal ions with a relatively wide detecting range (0-1.67 mM) and good linear relationship (R 2 = 0.9958). Moreover, the aggregating behavior and nano-structure of CAEA-H loaded SPB have been systematically analyzed via small angle X-ray scattering, turbidity titration, and Zeta-potential measurement. Based on a series of control experiments, we finally gain an insight into the sensing mechanism of this novel sensing probe. This contributed a proof of concept demonstration that sensitive and selective chemical detection can be achieved via a C-dot/SPB synergistic platform.

Core-Shell-Corona Silica Hybrid Nanoparticles Templated by Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes: A Study by Small Angle X-ray Scattering

Core-shell-corona silica/polymer hybrid nanoparticles with narrow size distribution were prepared in the template of spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) which consist of a solid polystyrene (PS) core densely grafted with linear poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) chains. The microstructure of obtained hybrid nanoparticles was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and in combination with dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The generation of silica shell within the brush is confirmed by the significant increase of the electron density in the shell, and the silica shell showed a unique inner-loose-outer-dense structure, whose thickness is pH sensitive but is insensitive to ionic strength as revealed by fitting SAXS data. After dissolving the PS core, hollow silica nanoparticles were obtained and determined by SAXS, which should be ideal carriers for pH-triggered drug delivery. SAXS is confirmed to be a powerful method to characterize the core-shell-corona silica/polymer hybrid and hollow silica nanoparticles.

Protein Immobilization onto Cationic Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes Studied by Small Angle X-ray Scattering

The immobilization of bovine serum albumins (BSA) onto cationic spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) consisting of a solid polystyrene (PS) core and a densely grafted poly(2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride) (PAEMH) shell was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The observed dynamics of adsorption of BSA onto SPB by time-resolved SAXS can be divided into two stages. In the first stage (tens of milliseconds), the added proteins as in-between bridge instantaneously caused the aggregation of SPB. Then BSA penetrated into the brush layer driven by electrostatic attractions, and reached equilibrium in the second stage (tens of seconds). The amount of BSA immobilized onto brush layer reached the maximum when pH was increased to about 6.1 and BSA concentration to 10 g/L. The cationic SPB were confirmed to provide stronger adsorption capacity for BSA compared to anionic ones.

Spherical polyelectrolyte nanogels as templates to prepare hollow silica nanocarriers: observation by small angle X-ray scattering and TEM

Hollow silica nanoparticles were prepared through generating a silica layer in spherical polyelectrolyte nanogels, which consisted of a solid core of polystyrene and a shell of crosslinked poly(acrylic acid), followed by removing the core via solvent dissolution.
