Microstructure Changes in Polyester Polyurethane upon Thermal and Humid Aging

Interfacial interactions of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics and malachite green, tetracycline in aqueous environments

Polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) are one of pivotal nondegradable emerging pollutant. Here the variation of the surface physicochemical characteristics of PET-MPs with UV irradiation aging and the adsorption behaviors of PET-MPs in malachite green (MG), tetracycline (TC) solution and the effect of coexisting Cu(II) were comparatively investigated. The yellowing, weakened hydrophobicity, and increased surface negative charge, crystallinity degree and oxygen-containing functional groups were manifested specifically by the aged PET-MPs. Different from the single system, the hydrophobic interaction and metal ion bridging complexation dominated the adsorption of MG and TC, respectively, in the binary solution. While in the ternary solution, cationic ion competition of Cu(II) with MG decreased its capture, and the formation of PET-Cu(II)-TC ternary complexes promoted TC adsorption. Moreover, PET-MPs could serve as an efficient vector for MG and TC in MG/TC/Cu(II) ternary system, indicating PET-MPs tend to carry more varieties in the complex environment, that may increase the environmental risk of PET-MPs.

Leveraging peptide-cellulose interactions to tailor the hierarchy and mechanics of peptide-polymer hybrids

Inspired by spider silk's hierarchical diversity, we leveraged peptide motifs with the capability to tune structural arrangement for controlling the mechanical properties of a conventional polymer framework. The addition of nanofiller with hydrogen bonding sites was used as another pathway towards hierarchical tuning via matrix-filler interactions. Specifically, peptide-polyurea hybrids (PPUs) were combined with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to develop mechanically-tunable nanocomposites via tailored matrix-filler interactions (or peptide-cellulose interactions). In this material platform, we explored the effect of these matrix-filler interactions on the secondary structure, hierarchical ordering, and mechanical properties of the peptide hybrid nanocomposites. Interactions between the peptide matrix and CNCs occur in all of the PPU/CNC nanocomposites, preventing α-helical ordering, but promoting inter-molecular hydrogen bonded β-sheet formation. Depending on peptide and CNC content, the Young's modulus varies from 10 to 150 MPa. Unlike conventional cellulose-reinforced polymer nanocomposites, the mechanical properties of these composite materials are dictated by a balance of CNC reinforcement, peptidic ordering, and microphase-separated morphology. This research highlights that leveraging peptide-cellulose interactions is a strategy to create materials with targeted mechanical properties for a specific application using a limited selection of building blocks.

Synthesis and Characterization of Citric Acid-Modified Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Prepared with Electrohydraulic Discharge Treatment

Chemical co-precipitation from ferrous and ferric salts at a 1:1.9 stoichiometric ratio in NH₄OH base with ultrasonication (sonolysis) in a low vacuum environment has been used for obtaining colloidal suspensions of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles coated with citric acid. Before coating, the nanoparticles were processed by electrohydraulic discharges with a high discharge current (several tens of amperes) in a water medium using a pulsed direct current. Magnetite nanoparticles were obtained with an average crystallite diameter D = 25-28 nm as obtained by XRD and particle sizes of 25 nm as measured by small-angle X-ray scattering. Magnetometry showed that all samples were superparamagnetic. The saturation magnetization for the citric acid covered samples after electrohydraulic processing showed higher value (58 emu/g) than for the directly coated samples (50 emu/g). Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the presence and binding of citric acid to the magnetite surface by chemisorption of carboxylate ions. Hydrodynamic sizes obtained from DLS and zeta potentials were 93 and 115 nm, -26 and -32 mV for the citric acid covered nanoparticles and 226 nm and 21 mV for the bare nanoparticles, respectively. The hydraulic discharge treatment resulted in a higher citric acid coverage and better particle dispersion. The developed method can be used in nanoparticle synthesis for biomedical applications.

A Review of Research on the Effect of Temperature on the Properties of Polyurethane Foams

Temperature is one of the main factors affecting the properties of polyurethane foams, and there are large differences in the mechanical properties of polyurethane foams at different temperatures. To understand the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of polyurethane foams and to provide a theoretical basis for the application of polyurethane foams in extreme environments, this paper systematically describes the research on the effect of mold temperature, raw material temperature, and environmental temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of polyurethane foams in the formation and service stages of rigid polyurethane foams by domestic and foreign scholars, and summarizes the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of polyurethane foams and the mechanism of action. A review of the literature shows that the effect of different temperatures on the mechanical properties of polyurethane foams can be summarized. The literature review shows that there are certain changes in the foaming process, pore structure, and mechanical properties of polyurethane foams at different temperatures, and the increase in temperature generally leads to the increase in pore size, decrease in density, and decrease in mechanical properties of polyurethane foams.

Engineering bio-inspired peptide-polyurea hybrids with thermo-responsive shape memory behaviour

Inspired by Nature's tunability driven by the modulation of structural organization, we utilize peptide motifs as an approach to tailor not only hierarchical structure, but also thermo-responsive shape memory properties of conventional polymeric materials. Specifically, poly(β-benzyl-L-aspartate)-b-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly(β-benzyl-L-aspartate) was incorporated as the soft segment in peptide-polyurea hybrids to manipulate hierarchical ordering through peptide secondary structure and a balance of inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding. Employing these bioinspired peptidic polyureas, we investigated the influence of secondary structure on microphase-separated morphology, and shape fixity and recovery via attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The β-sheet motifs promoted phase mixing through extensive inter-molecular hydrogen bonding between the hard block and peptide segments and provided an increased chain elasticity, resulting in decreased shape fixity compared to a non-peptidic control. In contrast, intra-molecular hydrogen bonding driven by the α-helical arrangements yielded a microphase-separated and hierarchically ordered morphology, leading to an increase in the shape fixing ratio. These results indicate that peptide secondary structure provides a convenient handle for tuning shape memory properties by regulating hydrogen bonding with the surrounding polyurea hard segment, wherein extent of hydrogen bonding and phase mixing between the peptidic block and hard segment dictate the resulting shape memory behaviour. Furthermore, the ability to shift secondary structure as a function of temperature was also demonstrated as a pathway to influence shape memory response. This research highlights that peptide secondary conformation influences the hierarchical ordering and modulates the shape memory response of peptide-polymer hybrids. We anticipate that these findings will enable the design of smart bio-inspired materials with responsive and tailored function via a balance of hydrogen bonding character, structural organization, and mechanics.

Polyurethane-Based Composites: Effects of Antibacterial Fillers on the Physical-Mechanical Behavior of Thermoplastic Polyurethanes

The challenge to manufacture medical devices with specific antibacterial functions, and the growing demand for systems able to limit bacterial resistance growth, necessitates the development of new technologies which can be easily produced at an industrial level. The object of this work was the study and the development of silver, titanium dioxide, and chitosan composites for the realization and/or implementation of biomedical devices. Thermoplastic elastomeric polyurethane was selected and used as matrix for the various antibacterial functions introduced during the processing phase (melt compounding). This strategy was employed to directly incorporate antimicrobial agents into the main constituent material of the devices themselves. With the exception of the composite filled with titanium dioxide, all of the other tested composites were shown to possess satisfactory mechanical properties. The best antibacterial effects were obtained with all the composites against Staphylococcus aureus: viability was efficiently inhibited by the prepared materials in four different bacterial culture concentrations.

Heterogeneous ion exchange membranes based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU): effect of PSS/DVB resin on morphology and electrodialysis

In this research, novel heterogeneous cation exchange membranes based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) have been prepared by the solution casting technique. The effects of incorporation level of sulfonated polystyrene divinyl-benzene (PSS/DVB) resin on water uptake, ion exchange capacity, membrane potential and salt extraction have been elucidated. Morphological and water uptake studies suggested a two-phase heterogeneous membrane morphology owing to the presence of hard and soft segments in the TPU backbone and swelling of PSS/DVB particles. This morphology was shifted to a semi-gelled morphology throughout the membrane bulk when resin loading exceeded 50 wt%. The physically cross-linked hard segments in the TPU backbone ensured a compact membrane morphology and prevented the formation of water channels. The membrane potential showed that increasing the resin content increased the membrane transport number (max. 0.95) up to 50 wt% resin loading and beyond this, the transport number started decreasing showing a pronounced effect of voids and water flow channels developing on excessive swelling. The permselectivity reached a maximum (up to 0.92) and salt extraction values also increased (by varying voltage) up to 50 wt% loading and started decreasing beyond this optimum content. This study shows successful development of low-cost heterogeneous cation exchange membranes based on TPU with acceptable electrochemical properties.

A bioinspired hydrogen bond-triggered ultrasensitive ionic mechanoreceptor skin

Biological cellular structures have inspired many scientific disciplines to design synthetic structures that can mimic their functions. Here, we closely emulate biological cellular structures in a rationally designed synthetic multicellular hybrid ion pump, composed of hydrogen-bonded [EMIM+][TFSI-] ion pairs on the surface of silica microstructures (artificial mechanoreceptor cells) embedded into thermoplastic polyurethane elastomeric matrix (artificial extracellular matrix), to fabricate ionic mechanoreceptor skins. Ionic mechanoreceptors engage in hydrogen bond-triggered reversible pumping of ions under external stimulus. Our ionic mechanoreceptor skin is ultrasensitive (48.1-5.77 kPa-1) over a wide spectrum of pressures (0-135 kPa) at an ultra-low voltage (1 mV) and demonstrates the ability to surpass pressure-sensing capabilities of various natural skin mechanoreceptors (i.e., Merkel cells, Meissner's corpuscles, Pacinian corpuscles). We demonstrate a wearable drone microcontroller by integrating our ionic skin sensor array and flexible printed circuit board, which can control directions and speed simultaneously and selectively in aerial drone flight.
