Investigation and Improvement of Scalable Oxygen Reducing Cathodes for Microbial Fuel Cells by Spray Coating

Propolis-Loaded Chitosan Nanoparticles for the Treatment of Bacterial Diarrhea: In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation

Diarrhea is a disorder in the gastrointestinal system that is accompanied by cramps, decreased stool’s viscosity, and reduced defecation intervals. In the current study, propolis was loaded into chitosan nanoparticles to develop a potential treatment for gastrointestinal infections. Various In Vitro experiments were performed to characterize the produced nanoparticles. The healing function of propolis-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (ProCHNPs) was evaluated in a rat model of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli-induced diarrhea. In Vitro studies showed that ProCHNPs were not toxic against intestinal epithelial cells and improved their viability. Furthermore, these particles had around 261.49±63.22 nm average particle size and showed significantly higher antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities than propolis-free chitosan nanoparticles. In Vivo studies showed that ProCHNPs had comparable anti-diarrhea function with norfloxacin as the standard drug. In addition, ProCHNPs increased the number of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal microflora and reduced the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the colon tissue. This study suggests potential use of ProCHNPs as an alternative treatment for bacterial diarrhea.

Bioaugmentation of electrogenic halophiles in the treatment of pharmaceutical industrial wastewater and energy production in microbial fuel cell under saline condition

Pharmaceutical wastewater with different toxic recalcitrant materials and high salinity requires a novel treatment technology before released into the environment. The present research details the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater along with energy production using bioaugmentation of halophilic consortium in air cathode microbial fuel cell (ACMFC) under saline condition (4%). Organic load (OL) varied from 1.04 to 3.51 gCOD/L was studied in ACMFC. TCOD (Total Chemical Oxygen Demand) removal exhibited 65%, 72%, 84% and 89% at 1.04, 1.52, 2.01 and 2.52 gCOD/L OL respectively. SCOD (Soluble Chemical Oxygen Demand) removal of 60%, 66%, 76% and 82% was recorded during the operation of identical OL (1.04-2.52 gCOD/L). Prominent TCOD (92%), SCOD (90%), TSS (Total Suspended Solids) removal of 73% was attained at 3.02 gCOD/L OL with corresponding energy production of 896 mV (Current density (CD) - 554 mA/m², Power density (PD)-505 mW/m²). CE (Columbic Efficiency) was 43%, 38%, 33%, 30%, 28% and 22% at different OL ranged between 1.04 and 3.51 gCOD/L. Increase in OL to 3.51 gCOD/L revealed decrement in TCOD (68%), SCOD (62%), TSS (52%) removal and energy production (CD-234 mA/m², PD-165 mW/m²). Complete removal of phenol was accomplished at different OL in 6 (1.04, 1.52 gCOD/L) and 8 (2.01, 2.52 and 3.02 gCOD/L) days respectively. Ochrobactrum, Marinobacter, Bacillus and Rhodococcus were the dominant halophilic electrogenic strain in ACMFC at different OL.

Influence of Humidity on Performance of Single Chamber Air-Cathode Microbial Fuel Cells with Different Separators

The maximum performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is significantly affected by the reduction reactions in the cathode, but their optimum condition is not fully understood yet. The air-cathode MFC operations with different separators (Nafion 117 and polypropylene (PP80) were evaluated at various relative humidity (RH) at the cathode chamber. Air cathode MFCs with a Nafion 117 separator at RH of 90 ± 2% produced the highest cell voltage of 0.35 V (600 Ω) and power density of 116 mW/m2. With a PP80 separator, the maximum power generation of 381 mW/m2 was obtained at a relatively lower RH of 30 ± 2%. The cyclic voltammogram and Tafel analysis indicated that the best performance of cathodic oxygen reduction reactions could be observed at 90% RH for Nafion and 50% RH for the PP80 separator. Additionally, the RH conditions also affected the anodic reactions and oxygen mass transfer rates to the anode chamber through the cathode and separators. This study suggests that the optimum RH condition at the cathode is important in order to obtain a high performance of MFC operations and needs to be controlled at different optimum levels depending on the characteristics of the separators.
