A Novel Evolutionary Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm for Multilevel Thresholding Segmentation of COVID-19 CT Images

An efficient multi-level thresholding method for breast thermograms analysis based on an improved BWO algorithm

Breast cancer is a prevalent disease and the second leading cause of death in women globally. Various imaging techniques, including mammography, ultrasonography, X-ray, and magnetic resonance, are employed for detection. Thermography shows significant promise for early breast disease detection, offering advantages such as being non-ionizing, non-invasive, cost-effective, and providing real-time results. Medical image segmentation is crucial in image analysis, and this study introduces a thermographic image segmentation algorithm using the improved Black Widow Optimization Algorithm (IBWOA). While the standard BWOA is effective for complex optimization problems, it has issues with stagnation and balancing exploration and exploitation. The proposed method enhances exploration with Levy flights and improves exploitation with quasi-opposition-based learning. Comparing IBWOA with other algorithms like Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO), Linear Success-History based Adaptive Differential Evolution (LSHADE), and the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), sine cosine algorithm (SCA), and black widow optimization (BWO) using otsu and Kapur's entropy method. Results show IBWOA delivers superior performance in both qualitative and quantitative analyses including visual inspection and metrics such as fitness value, threshold values, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), and feature similarity index (FSIM). Experimental results demonstrate the outperformance of the proposed IBWOA, validating its effectiveness and superiority.

MEF-UNet: An end-to-end ultrasound image segmentation algorithm based on multi-scale feature extraction and fusion

Ultrasound image segmentation is a challenging task due to the complexity of lesion types, fuzzy boundaries, and low-contrast images along with the presence of noises and artifacts. To address these issues, we propose an end-to-end multi-scale feature extraction and fusion network (MEF-UNet) for the automatic segmentation of ultrasound images. Specifically, we first design a selective feature extraction encoder, including detail extraction stage and structure extraction stage, to precisely capture the edge details and overall shape features of the lesions. In order to enhance the representation capacity of contextual information, we develop a context information storage module in the skip-connection section, responsible for integrating information from adjacent two-layer feature maps. In addition, we design a multi-scale feature fusion module in the decoder section to merge feature maps with different scales. Experimental results indicate that our MEF-UNet can significantly improve the segmentation results in both quantitative analysis and visual effects.

Advancing image segmentation with DBO-Otsu: Addressing rubber tree diseases through enhanced threshold techniques

Addressing the profound impact of Tapping Panel Dryness (TPD) on yield and quality in the global rubber industry, this study introduces a cutting-edge Otsu threshold segmentation technique, enhanced by Dung Beetle Optimization (DBO-Otsu). This innovative approach optimizes the segmentation threshold combination by accelerating convergence and diversifying search methodologies. Following initial segmentation, TPD severity levels are meticulously assessed using morphological characteristics, enabling precise determination of optimal thresholds for final segmentation. The efficacy of DBO-Otsu is rigorously evaluated against mainstream benchmarks like Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), and Feature Similarity Index (FSIM), and compared with six contemporary swarm intelligence algorithms. The findings reveal that DBO-Otsu substantially surpasses its counterparts in image segmentation quality and processing speed. Further empirical analysis on a dataset comprising TPD cases from level 1 to 5 underscores the algorithm's practical utility, achieving an impressive 80% accuracy in severity level identification and underscoring its potential for TPD image segmentation and recognition tasks.

Optimizing grid-connected PV systems with novel super-twisting sliding mode controllers for real-time power management

Over the past years, the use of renewable energy sources (RESs) has grown significantly as a means of providing clean energy to counteract the devastating effects of climate change. Reducing energy costs and pollution have been the primary causes of the rise in solar photovoltaic (PV) system integrations with the grid in recent years. A load that is locally connected to a GCPV requires both active and reactive power control. In order to control both active and reactive power, MAs and advanced controllers are essential. Researchers have used one of the recently developed MAs, known as the CAOA, which is based on mathematical arithmetic operators to tackle a few real-world optimization problems. Some disadvantages of CAOA include its natural tendency to converge to a local optimum and its limited capacity for exploration. By merging the PSO and CAOA methodologies, this article suggests the IAOA. To show how applicable IAOA is, its performance has been evaluated using four benchmark functions. The implementation of an IAOA-based ST-SMC for active and reactive power control is addressed in this article, which offers an innovative approach of research. In comparison to PSO-based ST-SMC and CAOA-based ST-SMC, the proposed IAOA-based ST-SMC appears to be superior, with settling time for active and reactive power control at a minimum of 0.01012 s and 0.5075 s. A real-time OPAL-RT 4510 simulator is used to validate the performance results of a 40 kW GCPV system after it has been investigated in the MATLAB environment.

A whale optimization algorithm based on atom-like structure differential evolution for solving engineering design problems

The whale optimization algorithm has received much attention since its introduction due to its outstanding performance. However, like other algorithms, the whale optimization algorithm still suffers from some classical problems. To address the issues of slow convergence, low optimization precision, and susceptibility to local convergence in the whale optimization algorithm (WOA). Defining the optimization behavior of whale individuals as quantum mechanical behavior, a whale optimization algorithm based on atom-like structure differential evolution (WOAAD) is proposed. Enhancing the spiral update mechanism by introducing a sine strategy guided by the electron orbital center. Improving the random-walk foraging mechanism by applying mutation operations to both the electron orbital center and random individuals. Performing crossover operations between the newly generated individuals from the improved mechanisms and random dimensions, followed by a selection process to retain superior individuals. This accelerates algorithm convergence, enhances optimization precision, and prevents the algorithm from falling into local convergence. Finally, implementing a scouting bee strategy, where whale individuals progressively increase the number of optimization failures within a limited parameter L. When a threshold is reached, random initialization is carried out to enhance population diversity. Conducting simulation experiments to compare the improved algorithm with the whale optimization algorithm, other optimization algorithms, and other enhanced whale optimization algorithms. The experimental results indicate that the improved algorithm significantly accelerates convergence, enhances optimization precision, and prevents the algorithm from falling into local convergence. Applying the improved algorithm to five engineering design problems, the experimental results demonstrate that the improved algorithm exhibits good applicability.

Arithmetic Optimization AOMDV Routing Protocol for FANETs

Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs), composed of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), possess characteristics of flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and rapid deployment, rendering them highly attractive for a wide range of civilian and military applications. FANETs are special mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), FANETs have the characteristics of faster network topology changes and limited energy. Existing reactive routing protocols are unsuitable for the highly dynamic and limited energy of FANETs. For the lithium battery-powered UAV, flight endurance lasts from half an hour to two hours. The fast-moving UAV not only affects the packet delivery rate, average throughput, and end-to-end delay but also shortens the flight endurance. Therefore, research is urgently needed into a high-performance routing protocol with high energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel routing protocol called AO-AOMDV, which utilizes arithmetic optimization (AO) to enhance the ad hoc on-demand multi-path distance vector (AOMDV) routing protocol. The AO-AOMDV utilizes a fitness function to calculate the fitness value of multiple paths and employs arithmetic optimization for selecting the optimal route for routing selection. Our experiments were conducted using NS3 with three evaluation metrics: the packet delivery ratio, network lifetime, and average end-to-end delay. We compare this algorithm to routing protocols including AOMDV and AODV. The results indicate that the proposed AO-AOMDV attained a higher packet delivery ratio, network lifetime, and lower average end-to-end delay.

A Multiple Mechanism Enhanced Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm for Numerical Problems

The Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) is a meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by mathematical operators, which may stagnate in the face of complex optimization issues. Therefore, the convergence and accuracy are reduced. In this paper, an AOA variant called ASFAOA is proposed by integrating a double-opposite learning mechanism, an adaptive spiral search strategy, an offset distribution estimation strategy, and a modified cosine acceleration function formula into the original AOA, aiming to improve the local exploitation and global exploration capability of the original AOA. In the proposed ASFAOA, a dual-opposite learning strategy is utilized to enhance population diversity by searching the problem space a lot better. The spiral search strategy of the tuna swarm optimization is introduced into the addition and subtraction strategy of AOA to enhance the AOA's ability to jump out of the local optimum. An offset distribution estimation strategy is employed to effectively utilize the dominant population information for guiding the correct individual evolution. In addition, an adaptive cosine acceleration function is proposed to perform a better balance between the exploitation and exploration capabilities of the AOA. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed ASFAOA, two experiments are conducted using existing state-of-the-art algorithms. First, The CEC 2017 benchmark function was applied with the aim of evaluating the performance of ASFAOA on the test function through mean analysis, convergence analysis, stability analysis, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and Friedman's test. The proposed ASFAOA is then utilized to solve the wireless sensor coverage problem and its performance is illustrated by two sets of coverage problems with different dimensions. The results and discussion show that ASFAOA outperforms the original AOA and other comparison algorithms. Therefore, ASFAOA is considered as a useful technique for practical optimization problems.

A Novel Hybrid Harris Hawk-Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm for Industrial Wireless Mesh Networks

A novel hybrid Harris Hawk-Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (HHAOA) for optimizing the Industrial Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) and real-time pressure process control was proposed in this research article. The proposed algorithm uses inspiration from Harris Hawk Optimization and the Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm to improve position relocation problems, premature convergence, and the poor accuracy the existing techniques face. The HHAOA algorithm was evaluated on various benchmark functions and compared with other optimization algorithms, namely Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm, Moth Flame Optimization, Sine Cosine Algorithm, Grey Wolf Optimization, and Harris Hawk Optimization. The proposed algorithm was also applied to a real-world industrial wireless mesh network simulation and experimentation on the real-time pressure process control system. All the results demonstrate that the HHAOA algorithm outperforms different algorithms regarding mean, standard deviation, convergence speed, accuracy, and robustness and improves client router connectivity and network congestion with a 31.7% reduction in Wireless Mesh Network routers. In the real-time pressure process, the HHAOA optimized Fractional-order Predictive PI (FOPPI) Controller produced a robust and smoother control signal leading to minimal peak overshoot and an average of a 53.244% faster settling. Based on the results, the algorithm enhanced the efficiency and reliability of industrial wireless networks and real-time pressure process control systems, which are critical for industrial automation and control applications.

Study on DNA Storage Encoding Based IAOA under Innovation Constraints

With the informationization of social processes, the amount of related data has greatly increased, making traditional storage media unable to meet the current requirements for data storage. Due to its advantages of a high storage capacity and persistence, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has been considered the most prospective storage media to solve the data storage problem. Synthesis is an important process for DNA storage, and low-quality DNA coding can increase errors during sequencing, which can affect the storage efficiency. To reduce errors caused by the poor stability of DNA sequences during storage, this paper proposes a method that uses the double-matching and error-pairing constraints to improve the quality of the DNA coding set. First, the double-matching and error-pairing constraints are defined to solve problems of sequences with self-complementary reactions in the solution that are prone to mismatch at the 3' end. In addition, two strategies are introduced in the arithmetic optimization algorithm, including a random perturbation of the elementary function and a double adaptive weighting strategy. An improved arithmetic optimization algorithm (IAOA) is proposed to construct DNA coding sets. The experimental results of the IAOA on 13 benchmark functions show a significant improvement in its exploration and development capabilities over the existing algorithms. Moreover, the IAOA is used in the DNA encoding design under both traditional and new constraints. The DNA coding sets are tested to estimate their quality regarding the number of hairpins and melting temperature. The DNA storage coding sets constructed in this study are improved by 77.7% at the lower boundary compared to existing algorithms. The DNA sequences in the storage sets show a reduction of 9.7-84.1% in the melting temperature variance, and the hairpin structure ratio is reduced by 2.1-80%. The results indicate that the stability of the DNA coding sets is improved under the two proposed constraints compared to traditional constraints.

A Comprehensive Survey on Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm

Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) is a recently developed population-based nature-inspired optimization algorithm (NIOA). AOA is designed under the inspiration of the distribution behavior of the main arithmetic operators in mathematics and hence, it also belongs to mathematics-inspired optimization algorithm (MIOA). MIOA is a powerful subset of NIOA and AOA is a proficient member of it. AOA is published in early 2021 and got a massive recognition from research fraternity due to its superior efficacy in different optimization fields. Therefore, this study presents an up-to-date survey on AOA, its variants, and applications.

Improved Reptile Search Algorithm by Salp Swarm Algorithm for Medical Image Segmentation

This study proposes a novel nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimizer based on the Reptile Search Algorithm combed with Salp Swarm Algorithm for image segmentation using gray-scale multi-level thresholding, called RSA-SSA. The proposed method introduces a better search space to find the optimal solution at each iteration. However, we proposed RSA-SSA to avoid the searching problem in the same area and determine the optimal multi-level thresholds. The obtained solutions by the proposed method are represented using the image histogram. The proposed RSA-SSA employed Otsu's variance class function to get the best threshold values at each level. The performance measure for the proposed method is valid by detecting fitness function, structural similarity index, peak signal-to-noise ratio, and Friedman ranking test. Several benchmark images of COVID-19 validate the performance of the proposed RSA-SSA. The results showed that the proposed RSA-SSA outperformed other metaheuristics optimization algorithms published in the literature.

UncertaintyFuseNet: Robust uncertainty-aware hierarchical feature fusion model with Ensemble Monte Carlo Dropout for COVID-19 detection

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic has become a major global threat to human health and well-being. Thus, the development of computer-aided detection (CAD) systems that are capable of accurately distinguishing COVID-19 from other diseases using chest computed tomography (CT) and X-ray data is of immediate priority. Such automatic systems are usually based on traditional machine learning or deep learning methods. Differently from most of the existing studies, which used either CT scan or X-ray images in COVID-19-case classification, we present a new, simple but efficient deep learning feature fusion model, called U n c e r t a i n t y F u s e N e t , which is able to classify accurately large datasets of both of these types of images. We argue that the uncertainty of the model's predictions should be taken into account in the learning process, even though most of the existing studies have overlooked it. We quantify the prediction uncertainty in our feature fusion model using effective Ensemble Monte Carlo Dropout (EMCD) technique. A comprehensive simulation study has been conducted to compare the results of our new model to the existing approaches, evaluating the performance of competing models in terms of Precision, Recall, F-Measure, Accuracy and ROC curves. The obtained results prove the efficiency of our model which provided the prediction accuracy of 99.08% and 96.35% for the considered CT scan and X-ray datasets, respectively. Moreover, our U n c e r t a i n t y F u s e N e t model was generally robust to noise and performed well with previously unseen data. Enhanced Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm for Parameter Estimation of PID Controller

The Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller is a key component in most engineering applications. The main disadvantage of PID is the selection of the best values for its parameters using traditional methods that do not achieve the best response. In this work, the recently released empirical identification algorithm that is the Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) was used to determine the best values of the PID parameters. AOA was selected due to its effective exploration ability. Unfortunately, AOA cannot achieve the best parameter values due to its poor exploitation of search space. Hence, the performance of the AOA exploit is improved by combining it with the Harris Hawk Optimization (HHO) algorithm which has an efficient exploit mechanism. In addition, avoidance of trapping in the local lower bounds of AOA-HHO is enhanced by the inclusion of perturbation and mutation factors. The proposed AOA-HHO algorithm is tested when choosing the best values for PID parameters to control two engineering applications namely DC motor regulation and three fluid level sequential tank systems. AOA-HHO has superiority over AOA and comparative algorithms.

Multilevel thresholding satellite image segmentation using chaotic coronavirus optimization algorithm with hybrid fitness function

Image segmentation is a critical step in digital image processing applications. One of the most preferred methods for image segmentation is multilevel thresholding, in which a set of threshold values is determined to divide an image into different classes. However, the computational complexity increases when the required thresholds are high. Therefore, this paper introduces a modified Coronavirus Optimization algorithm for image segmentation. In the proposed algorithm, the chaotic map concept is added to the initialization step of the naive algorithm to increase the diversity of solutions. A hybrid of the two commonly used methods, Otsu's and Kapur's entropy, is applied to form a new fitness function to determine the optimum threshold values. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using two different datasets, including six benchmarks and six satellite images. Various evaluation metrics are used to measure the quality of the segmented images using the proposed algorithm, such as mean square error, peak signal-to-noise ratio, Structural Similarity Index, Feature Similarity Index, and Normalized Correlation Coefficient. Additionally, the best fitness values are calculated to demonstrate the proposed method's ability to find the optimum solution. The obtained results are compared to eleven powerful and recent metaheuristics and prove the superiority of the proposed algorithm in the image segmentation problem.

Multilevel segmentation of 2D and volumetric medical images using hybrid Coronavirus Optimization Algorithm

Medical image segmentation is a crucial step in Computer-Aided Diagnosis systems, where accurate segmentation is vital for perfect disease diagnoses. This paper proposes a multilevel thresholding technique for 2D and 3D medical image segmentation using Otsu and Kapur's entropy methods as fitness functions to determine the optimum threshold values. The proposed algorithm applies the hybridization concept between the recent Coronavirus Optimization Algorithm (COVIDOA) and Harris Hawks Optimization Algorithm (HHOA) to benefit from both algorithms' strengths and overcome their limitations. The improved performance of the proposed algorithm over COVIDOA and HHOA algorithms is demonstrated by solving 5 test problems from IEEE CEC 2019 benchmark problems. Medical image segmentation is tested using two groups of images, including 2D medical images and volumetric (3D) medical images, to demonstrate its superior performance. The utilized test images are from different modalities such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), and X-ray images. The proposed algorithm is compared with seven well-known metaheuristic algorithms, where the performance is evaluated using four different metrics, including the best fitness values, Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), and Normalized Correlation Coefficient (NCC). The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of convergence to the global optimum and making a good balance between exploration and exploitation properties. Moreover, the quality of the segmented images using the proposed algorithm at different threshold levels is better than the other methods according to PSNR, SSIM, and NCC values. Additionally, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test is conducted to prove the statistical significance of the proposed algorithm.

An Analysis of the Operation Factors of Three PSO-GA-ED Meta-Heuristic Search Methods for Solving a Single-Objective Optimization Problem

In this study, we evaluate several nongradient (evolutionary) search strategies for minimizing mathematical function expressions. We developed and tested the genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization, and differential evolution in order to assess their general efficacy in optimization of mathematical equations. A comparison is then made between the results and the efficiency, which is determined by the number of iterations, the observed accuracy, and the overall run time. Additionally, the optimization employs 12 functions from Easom, Holder table, Michalewicz, Ackley, Rastrigin, Rosen, Rosen Brock, Shubert, Sphere, Schaffer, Himmelblau's, and Spring Force Vanderplaats. Furthermore, the crossover rate, mutation rate, and scaling factor are evaluated to determine the effectiveness of the following algorithms. According to the results of the comparison of optimization algorithms, the DE algorithm has the lowest time complexity of the others. Furthermore, GA demonstrated the greatest degree of temporal complexity. As a result, using the PSO method produces different results when repeating the same algorithm with low reliability in terms of locating the optimal location.

Lorentz chaotic trigonometric function pedigree based arithmetic optimization algorithm

With the increasing complexity and difficulty of numerical optimization problems in the real world, many efficient meta-heuristic optimization methods have been proposed to solve these problems. The arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) design is inspired by the distribution behavior of the main arithmetic operators in mathematics, including multiplication (M), division (D), subtraction (S) and addition (A). In order to improve the global search ability and local development ability of the AOA, the Lorentz triangle search variable step coefficient was proposed based on the broad-spectrum trigonometric functions combined with the Lorentz chaotic mapping strategy, which include a total of 24 search functions in four categories, such as regular trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, hyperbolic trigonometric functions, and inverse hyperbolic trigonometric functions. The position update was used to improve the convergence speed and accuracy of the algorithm. Through test experiments on benchmark functions and comparison with other well-known meta-heuristic algorithms, the superiority of the proposed improved AOA was proved.

Expecting individuals' body reaction to Covid-19 based on statistical Naïve Bayes technique

Covid-19, what a strange, unpredictable mutated virus. It has baffled many scientists, as no firm rule has yet been reached to predict the effect that the virus can inflict on people if they are infected with it. Recently, many researches have been introduced for diagnosing Covid-19; however, none of them pay attention to predict the effect of the virus on the person's body if the infection occurs but before the infection really takes place. Predicting the extent to which people will be affected if they are infected with the virus allows for some drastic precautions to be taken for those who will suffer from serious complications, while allowing some freedom for those who expect not to be affected badly. This paper introduces Covid-19 Prudential Expectation Strategy (CPES) as a new strategy for predicting the behavior of the person's body if he has been infected with Covid-19. The CPES composes of three phases called Outlier Rejection Phase (ORP), Feature Selection Phase (FSP), and Classification Phase (CP). For enhancing the classification accuracy in CP, CPES employs two proposed techniques for outlier rejection in ORP and feature selection in FSP, which are called Hybrid Outlier Rejection (HOR) method and Improved Binary Genetic Algorithm (IBGA) method respectively. In ORP, HOR rejects outliers in the training data using a hybrid method that combines standard division and Binary Gray Wolf Optimization (BGWO) method. On the other hand, in FSP, IBGA as a hybrid method selects the most useful features for the prediction process. IBGA includes Fisher Score (F_Score) as a filter method to quickly select the features and BGA as a wrapper method to accurately select the features based on the average accuracy value from several classification models as a fitness function to guarantee the efficiency of the selected subset of features with any classifier. In CP, CPES has the ability to classify people based on their bodies' reaction to Covid-19 infection, which is built upon a proposed Statistical Naïve Bayes (SNB) classifier after performing the previous two phases. CPES has been compared against recent related strategies in terms of accuracy, error, recall, precision, and run-time using Covid-19 dataset [1]. This dataset contains routine blood tests collected from people before and after their infection with covid-19 through a Web-based form created by us. CPES outperforms the competing methods in experimental results because it provides the best results with values of 0.87, 0.13, 0.84, and 0.79 for accuracy, error, precision, and recall.

An Improved Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm for Numerical Optimization Problems

The arithmetic optimization algorithm is a recently proposed metaheuristic algorithm. In this paper, an improved arithmetic optimization algorithm (IAOA) based on the population control strategy is introduced to solve numerical optimization problems. By classifying the population and adaptively controlling the number of individuals in the subpopulation, the information of each individual can be used effectively, which speeds up the algorithm to find the optimal value, avoids falling into local optimum, and improves the accuracy of the solution. The performance of the proposed IAOA algorithm is evaluated on six systems of nonlinear equations, ten integrations, and engineering problems. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms in terms of convergence speed, convergence accuracy, stability, and robustness.

A Multi-Strategy Improved Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm

To improve the performance of the arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) and solve problems in the AOA, a novel improved AOA using a multi-strategy approach is proposed. Firstly, circle chaotic mapping is used to increase the diversity of the population. Secondly, a math optimizer accelerated (MOA) function optimized by means of a composite cycloid is proposed to improve the convergence speed of the algorithm. Meanwhile, the symmetry of the composite cycloid is used to balance the global search ability in the early and late iterations. Thirdly, an optimal mutation strategy combining the sparrow elite mutation approach and Cauchy disturbances is used to increase the ability of individuals to jump out of the local optimal. The Rastrigin function is selected as the reference test function to analyze the effectiveness of the improved strategy. Twenty benchmark test functions, algorithm time complexity, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, and the CEC2019 test set are selected to test the overall performance of the improved algorithm, and the results are then compared with those of other algorithms. The test results show that the improved algorithm has obvious advantages in terms of both its global search ability and convergence speed. Finally, the improved algorithm is applied to an engineering example to further verify its practicability.

A Hybrid Arithmetic Optimization and Golden Sine Algorithm for Solving Industrial Engineering Design Problems

Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) is a physically inspired optimization algorithm that mimics arithmetic operators in mathematical calculation. Although the AOA has an acceptable exploration and exploitation ability, it also has some shortcomings such as low population diversity, premature convergence, and easy stagnation into local optimal solutions. The Golden Sine Algorithm (Gold-SA) has strong local searchability and fewer coefficients. To alleviate the above issues and improve the performance of AOA, in this paper, we present a hybrid AOA with Gold-SA called HAGSA for solving industrial engineering design problems. We divide the whole population into two subgroups and optimize them using AOA and Gold-SA during the searching process. By dividing these two subgroups, we can exchange and share profitable information and utilize their advantages to find a satisfactory global optimal solution. Furthermore, we used the Levy flight and proposed a new strategy called Brownian mutation to enhance the searchability of the hybrid algorithm. To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed work, HAGSA, we selected the CEC 2014 competition test suite as a benchmark function and compared HAGSA against other well-known algorithms. Moreover, five industrial engineering design problems were introduced to verify the ability of algorithms to solve real-world problems. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed work HAGSA is significantly better than original AOA, Gold-SA, and other compared algorithms in terms of optimization accuracy and convergence speed.

Primitive detection of Alzheimer’s disease using neuroimaging: A progression model for Alzheimer’s disease: Their applications, benefits, and drawbacks

Alzheimer’s disease (A.D.) is the most widespread type of Dementia, and it is not a curable neurodegenerative disease that affects millions of older people. Researchers were able to use their understanding of Alzheimer’s disease risk variables to develop enrichment processes for longitudinal imaging studies. Using this method, they reduced their sample size and study time. This paper describes the primitive detective of Alzheimer’s diseases using Neuroimaging techniques. Several preprocessing methods were used to ensure that the dataset was ready for subsequent feature extraction and categorization. The noise was reduced by converting and averaging many scan frames from real to DCT space. Both sides of the averaged image were filtered and combined into a single shot after being converted to real space. InceptionV3 and DenseNet201 are two pre-trained models used in the suggested model. The PCA approach was used to select the traits, and the resulting explained variance ratio was 0.99The Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI)—Simon’s Simplex Collection (SSC)—and UCI machine learning datasets showed that our method is faster and more successful at identifying complete long-risk patterns when compared to existing methods.

Exploring machine learning: a scientometrics approach using bibliometrix and VOSviewer

Machine Learning has found application in solving complex problems in different fields of human endeavors such as intelligent gaming, automated transportation, cyborg technology, environmental protection, enhanced health care, innovation in banking and home security, and smart homes. This research is motivated by the need to explore the global structure of machine learning to ascertain the level of bibliographic coupling, collaboration among research institutions, co-authorship network of countries, and sources coupling in publications on machine learning techniques. The Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) was applied to clustering prediction of authors dominance ranking in this paper. Publications related to machine learning were retrieved and extracted from the Dimensions database with no language restrictions. Bibliometrix was employed in computation and visualization to extract bibliographic information and perform a descriptive analysis. VOSviewer (version 1.6.16) tool was used to construct and visualize structure map of source coupling networks of researchers and co-authorship. About 10,814 research papers on machine learning published from 2010 to 2020 were retrieved for the research. Experimental results showed that the highest degree of betweenness centrality was obtained from cluster 3 with 153.86 from the University of California and Harvard University with 24.70. In cluster 1, the national university of Singapore has the highest degree betweenness of 91.72. Also, in cluster 5, the University of Cambridge (52.24) and imperial college London (4.52) having the highest betweenness centrality manifesting that he could control the collaborative relationship and that they possessed and controlled a large number of research resources. Findings revealed that this work has the potential to provide valuable guidance for new perspectives and future research work in the rapidly developing field of machine learning.

Machine learning in medical applications: A review of state-of-the-art methods

Applications of machine learning (ML) methods have been used extensively to solve various complex challenges in recent years in various application areas, such as medical, financial, environmental, marketing, security, and industrial applications. ML methods are characterized by their ability to examine many data and discover exciting relationships, provide interpretation, and identify patterns. ML can help enhance the reliability, performance, predictability, and accuracy of diagnostic systems for many diseases. This survey provides a comprehensive review of the use of ML in the medical field highlighting standard technologies and how they affect medical diagnosis. Five major medical applications are deeply discussed, focusing on adapting the ML models to solve the problems in cancer, medical chemistry, brain, medical imaging, and wearable sensors. Finally, this survey provides valuable references and guidance for researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers framing future research and development directions.

Modified Remora Optimization Algorithm for Global Optimization and Multilevel Thresholding Image Segmentation

Image segmentation is a key stage in image processing because it simplifies the representation of the image and facilitates subsequent analysis. The multi-level thresholding image segmentation technique is considered one of the most popular methods because it is efficient and straightforward. Many relative works use meta-heuristic algorithms (MAs) to determine threshold values, but they have issues such as poor convergence accuracy and stagnation into local optimal solutions. Therefore, to alleviate these shortcomings, in this paper, we present a modified remora optimization algorithm (MROA) for global optimization and image segmentation tasks. We used Brownian motion to promote the exploration ability of ROA and provide a greater opportunity to find the optimal solution. Second, lens opposition-based learning is introduced to enhance the ability of search agents to jump out of the local optimal solution. To substantiate the performance of MROA, we first used 23 benchmark functions to evaluate the performance. We compared it with seven well-known algorithms regarding optimization accuracy, convergence speed, and significant difference. Subsequently, we tested the segmentation quality of MORA on eight grayscale images with cross-entropy as the objective function. The experimental metrics include peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structure similarity (SSIM), and feature similarity (FSIM). A series of experimental results have proved that the MROA has significant advantages among the compared algorithms. Consequently, the proposed MROA is a promising method for global optimization problems and image segmentation.

An Eagle Strategy Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm for Frequency Stability Enhancement Considering High Renewable Power Penetration and Time-Varying Load

This study proposes a new optimization technique, known as the eagle strategy arithmetic optimization algorithm (ESAOA), to address the limitations of the original algorithm called arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA). ESAOA is suggested to enhance the implementation of the original AOA. It includes an eagle strategy to avoid premature convergence and increase the populations’ efficacy to reach the optimum solution. The improved algorithm is utilized to fine-tune the parameters of the fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) and the PID controllers for supporting the frequency stability of a hybrid two-area multi-sources power system. Here, each area composites a combination of conventional power plants (i.e., thermal-hydro-gas) and renewable energy sources (i.e., wind farm and solar farm). Furthermore, the superiority of the proposed algorithm has been validated based on 23 benchmark functions. Then, the superiority of the proposed FOPID-based ESAOA algorithm is verified through a comparison of its performance with other controller performances (i.e., PID-based AOA, PID-based ESAOA, and PID-based teaching learning-based optimization TLBO) under different operating conditions. Furthermore, the system nonlinearities, system uncertainties, high renewable power penetration, and control time delay has been considered to ensure the effectiveness of the proposed FOPID based on the ES-AOA algorithm. All simulation results elucidate that the domination in favor of the proposed FOPID-based ES-AOA algorithm in enhancing the frequency stability effectually will guarantee a reliable performance.

Radiology Imaging Scans for Early Diagnosis of Kidney Tumors: A Review of Data Analytics-Based Machine Learning and Deep Learning Approaches

Plenty of disease types exist in world communities that can be explained by humans’ lifestyles or the economic, social, genetic, and other factors of the country of residence. Recently, most research has focused on studying common diseases in the population to reduce death risks, take the best procedure for treatment, and enhance the healthcare level of the communities. Kidney Disease is one of the common diseases that have affected our societies. Sectionicularly Kidney Tumors (KT) are the 10th most prevalent tumor for men and women worldwide. Overall, the lifetime likelihood of developing a kidney tumor for males is about 1 in 466 (2.02 percent) and it is around 1 in 80 (1.03 percent) for females. Still, more research is needed on new diagnostic, early, and innovative methods regarding finding an appropriate treatment method for KT. Compared to the tedious and time-consuming traditional diagnosis, automatic detection algorithms of machine learning can save diagnosis time, improve test accuracy, and reduce costs. Previous studies have shown that deep learning can play a role in dealing with complex tasks, diagnosis and segmentation, and classification of Kidney Tumors, one of the most malignant tumors. The goals of this review article on deep learning in radiology imaging are to summarize what has already been accomplished, determine the techniques used by the researchers in previous years in diagnosing Kidney Tumors through medical imaging, and identify some promising future avenues, whether in terms of applications or technological developments, as well as identifying common problems, describing ways to expand the data set, summarizing the knowledge and best practices, and determining remaining challenges and future directions.

Boosting Marine Predators Algorithm by Salp Swarm Algorithm for Multilevel Thresholding Image Segmentation

Pixel rating is considered one of the commonly used critical factors in digital image processing that depends on intensity. It is used to determine the optimal image segmentation threshold. In recent years, the optimum threshold has been selected with great interest due to its many applications. Several methods have been used to find the optimum threshold, including the Otsu and Kapur methods. These methods are appropriate and easy to implement to define a single or bi-level threshold. However, when they are extended to multiple levels, they will cause some problems, such as long time-consuming, the high computational cost, and the needed improvement in their accuracy. To avoid these problems and determine the optimal multilevel image segmentation threshold, we proposed a hybrid Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA) with Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) to determine the optimal multilevel threshold image segmentation MPASSA. The obtained solutions of the proposed method are represented using the image histogram. Several standard evaluation measures, such as (the fitness function, time consumer, Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio, Structural Similarity Index, etc.…) are employed to evaluate the proposed segmentation method's effectiveness. Several benchmark images are used to validate the proposed algorithm's performance (MPASSA). The results showed that the proposed MPASSA got better results than other well-known optimization algorithms published in the literature.

Enhancement and segmentation of medical images through pythagorean fuzzy sets-An innovative approach

Image segmentation has attracted a lot of attention due to its potential biomedical applications. Based on these, in the current research, an attempt has been made to explore object enhancement and segmentation for CT images of lungs infected with COVID-19. By implementing Pythagorean fuzzy entropy, the considered images were enhanced. Further, by constructing Pythagorean fuzzy measures and utilizing the thresholding technique, the required values of thresholds for the segmentation of the proposed scheme are assessed. The object extraction ability of the five segmentation algorithms including current sophisticated, and proposed schemes are evaluated by applying the quality measurement factors. Ultimately, the proposed scheme has the best effect on object separation as well as the quality measurement values.

Nature-inspired optimization algorithms and their significance in multi-thresholding image segmentation: an inclusive review

Multilevel Thresholding (MLT) is considered as a significant and imperative research field in image segmentation that can efficiently resolve difficulties aroused while analyzing the segmented regions of multifaceted images with complicated nonlinear conditions. MLT being a simple exponential combinatorial optimization problem is commonly phrased by means of a sophisticated objective function requirement that can only be addressed by nondeterministic approaches. Consequently, researchers are engaging Nature-Inspired Optimization Algorithms (NIOA) as an alternate methodology that can be widely employed for resolving problems related to MLT. This paper delivers an acquainted review related to novel NIOA shaped lately in last three years (2019-2021) highlighting and exploring the major challenges encountered during the development of image multi-thresholding models based on NIOA.

Mathematical modeling and optimal intervention strategies of the COVID-19 outbreak

34,354,966 active cases and 460,787 deaths because of COVID-19 pandemic were recorded on November 06, 2021, in India. To end this ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, there is an urgent need to implement multiple population-wide policies like social distancing, testing more people and contact tracing. To predict the course of the pandemic and come up with a strategy to control it effectively, a compartmental model has been established. The following six stages of infection are taken into consideration: susceptible (S), asymptomatic infected (A), clinically ill or symptomatic infected (I), quarantine (Q), isolation (J) and recovered (R), collectively termed as SAIQJR. The qualitative behavior of the model and the stability of biologically realistic equilibrium points are investigated in terms of the basic reproduction number. We performed sensitivity analysis with respect to the basic reproduction number and obtained that the disease transmission rate has an impact in mitigating the spread of diseases. Moreover, considering the non-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical intervention strategies as control functions, an optimal control problem is implemented to mitigate the disease fatality. To reduce the infected individuals and to minimize the cost of the controls, an objective functional has been constructed and solved with the aid of Pontryagin's maximum principle. The implementation of optimal control strategy at the start of a pandemic tends to decrease the intensity of epidemic peaks, spreading the maximal impact of an epidemic over an extended time period. Extensive numerical simulations show that the implementation of intervention strategy has an impact in controlling the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 epidemic. Further, our numerical solutions exhibit that the combination of three controls are more influential when compared with the combination of two controls as well as single control. Therefore, the implementation of all the three control strategies may help to mitigate novel coronavirus disease transmission at this present epidemic scenario.

An Arithmetic-Trigonometric Optimization Algorithm with Application for Control of Real-Time Pressure Process Plant

This paper proposes a novel hybrid arithmetic-trigonometric optimization algorithm (ATOA) using different trigonometric functions for complex and continuously evolving real-time problems. The proposed algorithm adopts different trigonometric functions, namely sin, cos, and tan, with the conventional sine cosine algorithm (SCA) and arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) to improve the convergence rate and optimal search area in the exploration and exploitation phases. The proposed algorithm is simulated with 33 distinct optimization test problems consisting of multiple dimensions to showcase the effectiveness of ATOA. Furthermore, the different variants of the ATOA optimization technique are used to obtain the controller parameters for the real-time pressure process plant to investigate its performance. The obtained results have shown a remarkable performance improvement compared with the existing algorithms.

Stacking regularization in analogy-based software effort estimation

Analogy-based estimation (ABE) estimates the effort of the current project based on the information of similar past projects. The solution function of ABE provides the final effort prediction of a new project. Many studies on ABE in the past have provided various solution functions, but its effectiveness can still be enhanced. The present study is an attempt to improve the effort prediction accuracy of ABE by proposing a solution function SABE: Stacking regularization in analogy-based software effort estimation. The core of SABE is stacking, which is a machine learning technique. Stacking is beneficial as it works on multiple models harnessing their capabilities and provides a better estimation accuracy as compared to a single model. The proposed method is validated on four software effort estimation datasets and compared with the already existing solution functions: closet analogy, mean, median and inverse distance weighted mean. The evaluation criteria used are mean magnitude of relative error (MMRE), median magnitude of relative error (MdMRE), prediction (PRED) and standard accuracy (SA). The results suggested that the SABE showed promising performance for almost all the evaluation criteria when compared with the results of the earlier studies.

Regional analytics and forecasting for most affected stock markets: The case of GCC stock markets during COVID-19 pandemic

This paper determines the most affected stock market by COVID-19 among GCC stock markets and extracts the factors that increase this effect. Recommendations from the analytics results are studied, which can mitigate the financial impacts by taking the proper actions to reduce them. Despite the actions taken by countries worldwide to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the financial effects are still unidentified. Recently, the spread of the COVID-19 caused a decline in the stock market indicators because most sectors witnessed a recession because of curfews imposed to limit the spread of the virus. Different datasets are collected from the “Trading Economics” website, related to the indicators of COVID-19 and stock markets for each Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country. In addition, constructing visualizations of the most critical factors that support the facts extracted from the correlation analytics results showed that Bahrain was most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic with 47,351 confirmed cases per million populations. Moreover, building a forecasting model using Artificial Neural Network to establish how the virus will continue spreading until the end of May 2020. The results showed that the Kuwait stock market was the most affected by the pandemic, with average losses of −0.28. The losses would soon increase in the Bahrain stock market by −0.29, so in the next two months, the losses would be −0.35%, and Bahrain would be the most affected market in GCC.

An improved arithmetic optimization algorithm with forced switching mechanism for global optimization problems

Arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) is a newly proposed meta-heuristic method which is inspired by the arithmetic operators in mathematics. However, the AOA has the weaknesses of insufficient exploration capability and is likely to fall into local optima. To improve the searching quality of original AOA, this paper presents an improved AOA (IAOA) integrated with proposed forced switching mechanism (FSM). The enhanced algorithm uses the random math optimizer probability (RMOP) to increase the population diversity for better global search. And then the forced switching mechanism is introduced into the AOA to help the search agents jump out of the local optima. When the search agents cannot find better positions within a certain number of iterations, the proposed FSM will make them conduct the exploratory behavior. Thus the cases of being trapped into local optima can be avoided effectively. The proposed IAOA is extensively tested by twenty-three classical benchmark functions and ten CEC2020 test functions and compared with the AOA and other well-known optimization algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to other comparative algorithms on most of the test functions. Furthermore, the test results of two training problems of multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and three classical engineering design problems also indicate that the proposed IAOA is highly effective when dealing with real-world problems.

Brain CT registration using hybrid supervised convolutional neural network

BACKGROUND

Image registration is an essential step in the automated interpretation of the brain computed tomography (CT) images of patients with acute cerebrovascular disease (ACVD). However, performing brain CT registration accurately and rapidly remains greatly challenging due to the large intersubject anatomical variations, low resolution of soft tissues, and heavy computation costs. To this end, the HSCN-Net, a hybrid supervised convolutional neural network, was developed for precise and fast brain CT registration.

METHOD

HSCN-Net generated synthetic deformation fields using a simulator as one supervision for one reference-moving image pair to address the problem of lack of gold standards. Furthermore, the simulator was designed to generate multiscale affine and elastic deformation fields to overcome the registration challenge posed by large intersubject anatomical deformation. Finally, HSCN-Net adopted a hybrid loss function constituted by deformation field and image similarity to improve registration accuracy and generalization capability. In this work, 101 CT images of patients were collected for model construction (57), evaluation (14), and testing (30). HSCN-Net was compared with the classical Demons and VoxelMorph models. Qualitative analysis through the visual evaluation of critical brain tissues and quantitative analysis by determining the endpoint error (EPE) between the predicted sparse deformation vectors and gold-standard sparse deformation vectors, image normalized mutual information (NMI), and the Dice coefficient of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood supply area were carried out to assess model performance comprehensively.

RESULTS

HSCN-Net and Demons had a better visual spatial matching performance than VoxelMorph, and HSCN-Net was more competent for smooth and large intersubject deformations than Demons. The mean EPE of HSCN-Net (3.29 mm) was less than that of Demons (3.47 mm) and VoxelMorph (5.12 mm); the mean Dice of HSCN-Net was 0.96, which was higher than that of Demons (0.90) and VoxelMorph (0.87); and the mean NMI of HSCN-Net (0.83) was slightly lower than that of Demons (0.84), but higher than that of VoxelMorph (0.81). Moreover, the mean registration time of HSCN-Net (17.86 s) was shorter than that of VoxelMorph (18.53 s) and Demons (147.21 s).

CONCLUSION

The proposed HSCN-Net could achieve accurate and rapid intersubject brain CT registration.

Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease Using Cerebral Catheter Angiogram Neuroimaging: A Novel Model Based on Deep Learning Approaches

Neuroimaging refers to the techniques that provide efficient information about the neural structure of the human brain, which is utilized for diagnosis, treatment, and scientific research. The problem of classifying neuroimages is one of the most important steps that are needed by medical staff to diagnose their patients early by investigating the indicators of different neuroimaging types. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is of great importance in preventing the deterioration of the patient’s situation. In this research, a novel approach was devised based on a digital subtracted angiogram scan that provides sufficient features of a new biomarker cerebral blood flow. The used dataset was acquired from the database of K.A.U.H hospital and contains digital subtracted angiograms of participants who were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, besides samples of normal controls. Since each scan included multiple frames for the left and right ICA’s, pre-processing steps were applied to make the dataset prepared for the next stages of feature extraction and classification. The multiple frames of scans transformed from real space into DCT space and averaged to remove noises. Then, the averaged image was transformed back to the real space, and both sides filtered with Meijering and concatenated in a single image. The proposed model extracts the features using different pre-trained models: InceptionV3 and DenseNet201. Then, the PCA method was utilized to select the features with 0.99 explained variance ratio, where the combination of selected features from both pre-trained models is fed into machine learning classifiers. Overall, the obtained experimental results are at least as good as other state-of-the-art approaches in the literature and more efficient according to the recent medical standards with a 99.14% level of accuracy, considering the difference in dataset samples and the used cerebral blood flow biomarker.

Robust Model Predictive Control Paradigm for Automatic Voltage Regulators against Uncertainty Based on Optimization Algorithms

This paper introduces a robust model predictive controller (MPC) to operate an automatic voltage regulator (AVR). The design strategy tends to handle the uncertainty issue of the AVR parameters. Frequency domain conditions are derived from the Hermite–Biehler theorem to maintain the stability of the perturbed system. The tuning of the MPC parameters is performed based on a new evolutionary algorithm named arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA), while the expert designers use trial and error methods to achieve this target. The stability constraints are handled during the tuning process. An effective time-domain objective is formulated to guarantee good performance for the AVR by minimizing the voltage maximum overshoot and the response settling time simultaneously. The results of the suggested AOA-based robust MPC are compared with various techniques in the literature. The system response demonstrates the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed strategy with low control effort against the voltage variations and the parameters’ uncertainty compared with other techniques.

Frequency Stability of AC/DC Interconnected Power Systems with Wind Energy Using Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm-Based Fuzzy-PID Controller

This article proposes an intelligent control strategy to enhance the frequency dynamic performance of interconnected multi-source power systems composing of thermal, hydro, and gas power plants and the high penetration level of wind energy. The proposed control strategy is based on a combination of fuzzy logic control with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller to overcome the PID limitations during abnormal conditions. Moreover, a newly adopted optimization technique namely Arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) is proposed to fine-tune the proposed fuzzy-PID controller to overcome the disadvantages of conventional and heuristic optimization techniques (i.e., long time in estimating controller parameters-slow convergence curves). Furthermore, the effect of the high voltage direct current link is taken into account in the studied interconnected power system to eliminate the AC transmission disadvantages (i.e., frequent tripping during oscillations in large power systems–high level of fault current). The dynamic performance analysis confirms the superiority of the proposed fuzzy-PID controller based on the AOA compared to the fuzzy-PID controller based on a hybrid local unimodal sampling and teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO) in terms of minimum objective function value and overshoots and undershoots oscillation measurement. Also, the AOA’s proficiency has been verified over several other powerful optimization techniques; differential evolution, TLBO using the PID controller. Moreover, the simulation results ensure the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed fuzzy-PID controller using the AOA in achieving better performance under several contingencies; different load variations, the high penetration level of the wind power, and system uncertainties compared to other literature controllers adjusting by various optimization techniques.
