Abstract
This review examined the current state of knowledge on the modifications of commercial soft lining materials (SLMs) with a variety of antifungal compounds: (i) polyene antibiotics, including nystatin and amphotericin B, (ii) azole drugs, including fluconazole, itraconazole, clotrimazole, ketoconazole, and miconazole, and (iii) antiseptics, including chlorhexidine salts to give them anti-Candida albicans properties. The effect of such modifications on the SLMs' physical properties, such as drug release, water sorption, surface properties, bond strength, tensile strength, and hardness, was also analyzed. In effect, this study provided a unique compilation of research results obtained for numerous properties of SLM modified with antifungal compounds that differ in their chemical structure and mechanism of antifungal action. These results might also be useful for prosthetic dentistry, where SLMs are used to prevent and treat candidiasis, the most common disease among denture wearers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present review aimed to investigate the association between salivary biomarkers and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). TMD is a multifactorial condition characterised by pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and surrounding structures. Salivary biomarkers have emerged as potential diagnostic tools due to their non-invasiveness and easy accessibility. However, the literature on salivary biomarkers in relation to TMD is limited and inconsistent. METHODS Electronic databases of Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, PsychINFO, CINAHL and Medline were searched using specific search terms and Boolean operators. The search was limited to articles published in English that assessed salivary biomarkers in individuals diagnosed with TMD. Two reviewers independently screened the articles and extracted data. ROB-2 was used to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS Eleven clinical papers met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The findings provided consistent evidence of a clear association between salivary biomarkers and TMD. Various biomarkers, including cortisol, IL-1, glutamate and several others, were assessed. Some studies reported higher levels of cortisol and IL-1 in TMD patients, indicating potential involvement in stress and inflammation. Glutamate levels were found to be elevated, suggesting a role in pain modulation. Other biomarkers also showed alterations in TMD patients compared to controls: CONCLUSION: The findings from the included studies suggest that salivary biomarkers may play a role in TMD pathophysiology. Though a definitive conclusion can be drawn regarding the specific salivary biomarkers and their association with TMD, the results must be interpreted with caution considering the heterogeneity of the biomarkers assessed. Further research with larger sample sizes, standardised methodology and rigorous study designs is needed to elucidate the role of salivary biomarkers in TMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bruxism is a parafunctional activity characterised by grinding or clenching of teeth and is a common oral health concern in individuals with down syndrome (DS). Understanding the prevalence of bruxism in this population is crucial for developing effective management strategies. This systematic review and meta-analysis is aimed to investigate the prevalence of bruxism among individuals with DS and explore its association with other oral health issues. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted across multiple electronic databases to identify relevant studies. Cross-sectional and observational studies were included. Data on bruxism prevalence and associated factors were extracted, and a meta-analysis was performed using both fixed-effects (FE) and random-effects (RE) models of MedCalc software. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed using I2 statistics. New Castle-Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate methodological quality of the included studies. RESULTS Eight studies met the pre-defined inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. Seven studies used a questionnaire to assess bruxism. The pooled proportion estimate for occurrence of DS across the included studies was found to be 0.33 (95% CI: 0.22-0.45) as per the RE model and 0.35 (95% CI: 0.31-0.450) as per FE model in the quantitative analysis. All studies exhibited good methodological quality. CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis provide evidence of a significant prevalence of bruxism among individuals with DS. The findings highlight the association of bruxism with other oral health issues and specific chromosomal abnormalities. Comprehensive oral health assessments, including diagnostic procedures like Polysomnography, are essential for addressing the unique oral health needs of individuals with DS. Further studies are recommended with a valid tool for the diagnosis. Early interventions and management strategies need to be tailored to this population, considering the multifaceted nature of oral health concerns in individuals with DS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral diseases are common and affect millions of people worldwide. They can range from mild and easily treatable conditions to more severe and serious diseases. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental monitoring are essential for maintaining good oral health. When it comes to children's health and well-being, parents' education level plays a critical role. Research has shown that parents' higher educational attainment is associated with better health outcomes for their children. Our aim is to evaluate whether parents' education level and employment influence children oral health and its impact on the family. METHODS We enrolled consecutively healthy subjects aged between 0-16 and their parents at the Dental Clinic of the University of Campania "L. Vanvitelli". The Italian version of the ECOHIS (I-ECOHIS) was administered to parents of the enrolled subjects referred to the Dental Clinic of the University of Campania "L. Vanvitelli". Linear regression models, adjusted for age and sex, were used to explore the association between parents' employment or education level and the ECOHIS scores. Statistical significance was accepted when p value < 0.05. RESULTS We found a significative association of a higher I-ECOHIS total score (coeff. 4.04244; CI 95%: 1.530855-6.554026; p = 0,002) and higher I-ECOHIS children section score (coeff. 3.2794; CI 95%: 1.29002-5.268; P = 0,002) and the father unemployed status. We also found that a higher education level of the father was associated with a lower ECOHIS total score (coeff. -1.388; IC 95%: -2.562115--0.214 p = 0.021) and a higher education level of the mother was associated with a lower ECOHIS in children section (coeff. -0.972; IC95%: -1.909356-0.034; p = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS Father unemployed status and a lower educational level for both parents may negatively affect oral health status.

Abstract
An ideal denture base must have good physical and mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and esthetic properties. Various polymeric materials have been used to construct denture bases. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most used biomaterial for dentures fabrication due to its favorable properties, which include ease of processing and pigmenting, sufficient mechanical properties, economy, and low toxicity. This article aimed to comprehensively review the current knowledge about denture base materials (DBMs) types, properties, modifications, applications, and construction methods. We searched for articles about denture base materials in PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Journals covering topics including dental materials, prosthodontics, and restorative dentistry were also combed through. Denture base material variations, types, qualities, applications, and fabrication research published in English were considered. Although PMMA has several benefits and gained popularity as a denture base material, it has certain limitations and cannot be classified as an ideal biomaterial for fabricating dental prostheses. Accordingly, several studies have been performed to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of PMMA by chemical modifications and mechanical reinforcement using fibers, nanofillers, and hybrid materials. This review aimed to update the current knowledge about DBMs' types, properties, applications, and recent developments. There is a need for specific research to improve their biological properties due to patient and dental staff adverse reactions to possibly harmful substances produced during their manufacturing and use.

Abstract
Smart biomaterials can sense and react to physiological or external environmental stimuli (e.g., mechanical, chemical, electrical, or magnetic signals). The last decades have seen exponential growth in the use and development of smart dental biomaterials for antimicrobial applications in dentistry. These biomaterial systems offer improved efficacy and controllable bio-functionalities to prevent infections and extend the longevity of dental devices. This review article presents the current state-of-the-art of design, evaluation, advantages, and limitations of bioactive and stimuli-responsive and autonomous dental materials for antimicrobial applications. First, the importance and classification of smart biomaterials are discussed. Second, the categories of bioresponsive antibacterial dental materials are systematically itemized based on different stimuli, including pH, enzymes, light, magnetic field, and vibrations. For each category, their antimicrobial mechanism, applications, and examples are discussed. Finally, we examined the limitations and obstacles required to develop clinically relevant applications of these appealing technologies.

Abstract
Objectives Dimorphic transformation from yeast cells to hyphae is considered one of the major virulence factors of candidal species. The development of antifungal resistance against several candida diseases has led researchers to find plant derived alternatives. We aimed to determine the effect of hydroxychavicol (HC), Amphotericin B (AMB), and their combination (HC + AMB) on the transition and germination of oral Candida species. Methods The antifungal susceptibility of hydroxychavicol (HC) and Amphotericin B (AMB) separately and in a mixture (HC + AMB) against Candida albicans ATCC 14053, Candida parapsilosis ATCC 22019, Candida tropicalis ATCC 13803, and Candida dubliniensis ATCC MYA-2975 was determined by broth microdilution technique. Minimal Inhibitory Concentration was calculated based on the CLSI protocols. The MIC50, fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index, and IC50 were also determined. The IC50 values were used as the treatment concentration of HC, AMB, and HC + AMB to study the effect of antifungal inhibition on yeast hypha transition (gemination). The germ tube formation percentage of candida species was calculated at several intervals using a colorimetric assay. Results The MIC50 range of HC alone against Candida species was between 120-240 µg per mL while that of AMB was between 2-8 µg per mL, respectively. The combination of HC + AMB at 1:1 and 2:1 demonstrated the strongest synergistic activity against C. albicans with an FIC index of 0.07. Moreover, within the first hour of treatment, the total percentage of germinating cells was significantly reduced by 79% (p < 0.05). Conclusion The combination of HC + AMB displayed synergism and inhibited C. albicans hyphal growth. HC + AMB combination slowed the germination process and exhibited consistent prolonged effect up to 3 h post-treatment. The results of this study will pave the way for potential in vivo studies.

Abstract
One of the most common oral diseases affecting people wearing dentures is chronic atrophic candidiasis or denture stomatitis (DS). The aim of the paper is to provide an update on the pathogenesis, presentation, and management of DS in general dental practice settings. A comprehensive review of the literature published in the last ten years was undertaken using multiple databases, including PubMed via MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus. The eligible articles were analyzed to identify evidence-based strategies for the management of DS. Despite its multifactorial nature, the leading cause of DS is the development of oral Candida albicans biofilm, which is facilitated by poor oral and denture hygiene, long-term denture wear, ill-fitting dentures, and the porosity of the acrylic resin in the dentures. DS affects between 17 and 75% of the population wearing dentures, with a slight predominance in elderly females. The mucosal denture surfaces and posterior tongue are the common sites of DS, and the affected areas exhibit erythema, the swelling of the palatal mucosa and edema. Oral and denture hygiene protocols, adjusting or re-fabricating poorly adapting dentures, smoking cessation, avoiding nocturnal denture wear, and the administration of topical or systemic antifungals are the mainstay of management. Alternate treatments such as microwave disinfection, phytomedicine, photodynamic therapy, and incorporation of antifungals and nanoparticles into denture resins are being evaluated for the treatment of DS but require further evidence before routine use in clinical practice. In summary, DS is the most common oral inflammatory lesion experienced by denture wearers. Most patients with DS can be managed in general dental practice settings. Effective management by general dental practitioners may be supported by a thorough understanding of the pathogenesis, the recognition of the clinical presentation, and an awareness of contemporary treatment strategies.

Abstract
Infections caused by micro-organisms of the genus Candida are becoming a growing health problem worldwide. These fungi are opportunistic commensals that can produce infections—clinically known as candidiasis—in immunocompromised individuals. The indiscriminate use of different anti-fungal treatments has triggered the resistance of Candida species to currently used therapies. In this sense, propolis has been shown to have potent antimicrobial properties and thus can be used as an approach for the inhibition of Candida species. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the anti-Candida effects of a propolis extract obtained from the north of Mexico on clinical isolates of Candida species. Candida species were specifically identified from oral lesions, and both the qualitative and quantitative anti-Candida effects of the Mexican propolis were evaluated, as well as its inhibitory effect on C. albicans isolate’s germ tube growth and chemical composition. Three Candida species were identified, and our results indicated that the inhibition halos of the propolis ranged from 7.6 to 21.43 mm, while that of the MFC and FC50 ranged from 0.312 to 1.25 and 0.014 to 0.244 mg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the propolis was found to inhibit germ tube formation (IC50 ranging from 0.030 to 1.291 mg/mL). Chemical composition analysis indicated the presence of flavonoids, including pinocembrin, baicalein, pinobanksin chalcone, rhamnetin, and biochanin A, in the Mexican propolis extract. In summary, our work shows that Mexican propolis presents significant anti-Candida effects related to its chemical composition, and also inhibits germ tube growth. Other Candida species virulence factors should be investigated in future research in order to determine the mechanisms associated with antifungal effects against them.

Abstract
The paper deals with new approaches to chitosan (CS)-based antifungal therapeutic formulations designed to fulfill the requirements of specific applications. Gel-like formulations were prepared by mixing CS dissolved in aqueous lactic acid (LA) solution with nystatin (NYS) powder and/or propolis (PRO) aqueous solution dispersed in glycerin, followed by water evaporation to yield flexible mesoporous (pore widths of 2-4 nm) films of high specific surfaces between 1 × 103 and 1.7 × 103 m2/g. Morphological evaluation of the antifungal films showed uniform dispersion and downsizing of NYS crystallites (with initial sizes up to 50 μm). Their mechanical properties were found to be close to those of soft tissues (Young's modulus values between 0.044-0.025 MPa). The films presented hydration capacities in physiological condition depending on their composition, i.e., higher for NYS-charged (628%), as compared with PRO loaded films (118-129%). All NYS charged films presented a quick release for the first 10 min followed by a progressive increase of the release efficiency at 48.6%, for the samples containing NYS alone and decreasing values with increasing amount of PRO to 45.9% and 42.8% after 5 h. By in vitro analysis, the hydrogels with acidic pH values around 3.8 were proven to be active against Candida albicans and Candida glabrata species. The time-killing assay performed during 24 h on Candida albicans in synthetic vagina-simulative medium showed that the hydrogel formulations containing both NYS and PRO presented the faster slowing down of the fungal growth, from colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL of 1.24 × 107 to CFU/mL < 10 (starting from the first 6 h).

Abstract
Objectives Denture stomatitis is a mucosal condition associated with complete and partial removable dentures. This paper presents a short review of the literature on this topic with more emphasis on the treatment protocols of denture stomatitis as studied in recent systematic reviews. Methods A general review of the literature was carried out in the first part of this paper, and then the most recent systematic reviews on the treatment protocols of denture stomatitis were summarized. Results Fifteen systematic reviews were collected and classified into six main treatment protocols. Conclusions Dentist knowledge of up-to-date treatment options of denture stomatitis will assist comprehensive treatment planning. However, the newer methods of denture disinfection need further studies before recommendation.
