Optimal Cyanobacterial Pigment Retrieval from Ocean Colour Sensors in a Highly Turbid, Optically Complex Lake

Predicting water quality variability in a Mediterranean hypereutrophic monomictic reservoir using Sentinel 2 MSI: the importance of considering model functional form

Anthropogenic eutrophication is a global environmental problem threatening the ecological functions of many inland freshwaters and diminishing their abilities to meet their designated uses. Water authorities worldwide are being pressed to improve their abilities to monitor, predict, and manage the incidence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). While most water quality management decisions are still based on conventional monitoring programs that lack the needed spatio-temporal resolution for effective lake/reservoir management, recent advances in remote sensing are providing new opportunities towards better understanding water quality variability in these important freshwater systems. This study assessed the potential of using the Sentinel 2 Multispectral Instrument to predict and assess the spatio-temporal variability in the water quality of the Qaraoun Reservoir, a poorly monitored Mediterranean hypereutrophic monomictic reservoir that is subject to extensive periods of HABs. The work first evaluated the ability to transfer and recalibrate previously developed reservoir-specific Landsat 7 and 8 water quality models when used with Sentinel 2 data. The results showed poor transferability between Landsat and Sentinel 2, with most models experiencing a significant drop in their predictive skill even after recalibration. Sentinel 2 models were then developed for the reservoir based on 153 water quality samples collected over 2 years. The models explored different functional forms, including multiple linear regressions (MLR), multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), random forests (RF), and support vector regressions (SVR). The results showed that the RF models outperformed their MLR, MARS, and SVR counterparts with regard to predicting chlorophyll-a, total suspended solids, Secchi disk depth, and phycocyanin. The coefficient of determination (R2) for the RF models varied between 85% for TSS up to 95% for SDD. Moreover, the study explored the potential of quantifying cyanotoxin concentrations indirectly from the Sentinel 2 MSI imagery by benefiting from the strong relationship between cyanotoxin levels and chlorophyll-a concentrations.

A satellite-based hybrid model for trophic state evaluation in inland waters across China

Eutrophication is one of the major threats to the inland water ecosystem. Satellite remote sensing provides a promising way to monitor trophic state at large spatial scale in an efficient manner. Currently, most satellite-based trophic state evaluation approaches have focused on water quality parameters retrieval (e.g., transparency, chlorophyll-a), based on which trophic state was evaluated. However, the retrieval accuracies of individual parameter do not meet the demand for accurate trophic state evaluation, especially for the turbid inland waters. In this study, we proposed a novel hybrid model to estimate trophic state index (TSI) by integrating multiple spectral indices associated with different eutrophication level based on Sentinel-2 imagery. The TSI estimated by the proposed method agreed well with the in-situ TSI observations, with root mean square error (RMSE) of 6.93 and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 13.77%. Compared with the independent observations from Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the estimated monthly TSI also showed good consistency (RMSE=5.91,MAPE=10.66%). Furthermore, the congruent performance of the proposed method in the 11 sample lakes (RMSE=5.91,MAPE=10.66%) and the 51 ungauged lakes (RMSE=7.16,MAPE=11.56%) indicated the favorable model generalization. The proposed method was then applied to assess the trophic state of 352 permanent lakes and reservoirs across China during the summers of 2016-2021. It showed that 10%, 60%, 28%, and 2% of the lakes/reservoirs are in oligotrophic, mesotrophic, light eutrophic, and middle eutrophic states respectively. Eutrophic waters are concentrated in the Middle-and-Lower Yangtze Plain, the Northeast Plain, and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Overall, this study improved the trophic state representativeness and revealed trophic state spatial distribution of Chinese inland waters, which has the significant meanings for aquatic environment protection and water resource management.

Toward Atmospheric Correction Algorithms for Sentinel-3/OLCI Images of Productive Waters

Atmospheric correction of remote sensing imagery over optically complex waters is still a challenging task. Even algorithms showing a good accuracy for moderate and extremely turbid waters need to be tested when being used for eutrophic inland basins. Such a test was carried out in this study on the example of a Sentinel-3/OLCI image of the productive waters of the Gorky Reservoir during the period of intense blue-green algal bloom using data on the concentration of chlorophyll a and remote sensing reflectance measured from the motorboat at many points of the reservoir. The accuracy of four common atmospheric correction (AC) algorithms was examined. All of them showed unsatisfactory accuracy due to incorrect determination of atmospheric aerosol parameters and aerosol radiance. The calculated aerosol optical depth (AOD) spectra varied widely (AOD(865) = 0.005 − 0.692) even over a small area (up to 10 × 10 km) and correlated with the measured chlorophyll a. As a result, a part of the high water-leaving signal caused by phytoplankton bloom was taken as an atmosphere signal. A significant overestimation of atmospheric aerosol parameters, as a consequence, led to a strong underestimation of the remote sensing reflectance and low accuracy of the considered AC algorithms. To solve this problem, an algorithm with a fixed AOD was proposed. The fixed AOD spectrum was determined in the area with relatively “clean” water as 5 percentiles of AOD in all water pixels. The proposed algorithm made it possible to obtain the remote sensing reflectance with high accuracy. The slopes of linear regression are close to 1 and the intercepts tend to zero in almost all spectral bands. The determination coefficients are more than 0.9; the bias, mean absolute percentage error, and root-mean-square error are notably lower than for other AC algorithms.

Monitoring Phycocyanin with Landsat 8/Operational Land Imager Orange Contra-Band

The Operational Land Imager (OLI) onboard the Landsat 8 satellite has a panchromatic band (503–676 nm) that has been used to compute a virtual spectral band known as “orange contra-band” (590–635 nm). The major application of the orange contra-band is the monitoring of cyanobacteria which is usually quantified by the measurement of the concentration of phycocyanin (PC) which has an absorption peak around 620 nm. In this study, we evaluated the use of the orange contra-band approach for estimating PC concentration from in situ proximal hyperspectral data from Eagle Creek Reservoir (ECR), in Indiana, USA. We first validated the empirical relationship for the computation of the orange contra-band by using the panchromatic, red, and green spectral bands from ECR. PC concentration retrieval using the orange contra-band were not successful when using the entire dataset (R2 < 0.1) or when using only PC concentrations higher than 50 mg/m3 (R2 < 0.24). Better results were achieved when using samples in which PC was 1.5 times higher than the chlorophyll-a concentration (R2 = 0.84). These results highlighted the need for the development of remote sensing algorithms for the accurate estimation of PC concentration from non-PC dominant waters which could be use to track and/or predict cyanobacteria blooms.

Development Trends and Frontiers of Ocean Big Data Research Based on CiteSpace

Modern socio-economic development and climate prediction depend greatly on the application of ocean big data. With the accelerated development of ocean observation methods and the continuous improvement of the big data science, the challenges of multiple data sources and data diversity have emerged in the ocean field. As a result, the current data magnitude has reached the terabyte scale. Currently, the traditional theoretical foundation and technical methods have their inherent limitations and demerits that cannot satisfied the temporal and spatial attributes of the current ocean big data. Numerous scholars and countries were involved in ocean big data research. To explore the focus and current status, and determine the topics of research on bursts and acquisition of trend related to ocean big data, 400 articles between 1990 and 2019 were collected from the “Web of Science.” Combined with visualization software CiteSpace, bibliometrics method and literature combing technology, the pivotal literature related to ocean big data, including significant level countries, institutions, authors, journals and keywords were recognized. A synthetical analysis has revealed research hot spots and research frontiers. The purpose of this study is to provide researchers and practitioners in the field of ocean big data with the main research domains and research hotspots, and orientation for further research.

Determination of Phycocyanin from Space—A Bibliometric Analysis

Over the past few decades, there has been an increase in the number of studies about the estimation of phycocyanin derived from remote sensing techniques. Since phycocyanin is a unique pigment of inland water cyanobacteria, the quantification of its concentration from earth observation data is important for water quality monitoring - once some species can produce toxins. Because of the growth of this field in the past decade, several reviews and studies comparing algorithms have been published. Thus, instead of focusing on algorithms comparison or description, the goal of the present study is to systematically analyze and visualize the evolution of publications. Using the Web of Science database this study analyzed the existing publications on remote sensing of phycocyanin decade-by-decade for the period 1991–2020. The bibliometric analysis showed how research topics evolved from measuring pigments to the quantification of optical properties and from laboratory experiments to measuring entire temperate and tropical aquatic systems. This study provides the status quo and development trend of the field and points out what could be the direction for future research.
