Urban Health Related Air Quality Indicators over the Middle East and North Africa Countries Using Multiple Satellites and AERONET Data

Study on the spatiotemporal dynamic of ground-level ozone concentrations on multiple scales across China during the blue sky protection campaign

Surface ozone (O₃), one of the harmful air pollutants, generated significantly negative effects on human health and plants. Existing O₃ datasets with coarse spatiotemporal resolution and limited coverage, and the uncertainties of O₃ influential factors seriously restrain related epidemiology and air pollution studies. To tackle above issues, we proposed a novel scheme to estimate daily O₃ concentrations on a fine grid scale (1 km × 1 km) from 2018 to 2020 across China based on machine learning methods using hourly observed ground-level pollutant concentrations data, meteorological data, satellite data, and auxiliary data including digital elevation model (DEM), land use data (LUD), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), population (POP), and nighttime light images (NTL), and to identify the difference of influential factors of O₃ on diverse urbanization and topography conditions. Some findings were achieved. The correlation coefficients (R²) between O₃ concentrations and surface net solar radiation (SNSR), boundary layer height (BLH), 2 m temperature (T2M), 10 m v-component (MVW), and NDVI were 0.80, 0.40, 0.35, 0.30, and 0.20, respectively. The random forest (RF) demonstrated the highest validation R² (0.86) and lowest validation RMSE (13.74 μg/m³) in estimating O₃ concentrations, followed by support vector machine (SVM) (R² = 0.75, RMSE = 18.39 μg/m³), backpropagation neural network (BP) (R² = 0.74, RMSE = 19.26 μg/m³), and multiple linear regression (MLR) (R² = 0.52, RMSE = 25.99 μg/m³). Our China High-Resolution O₃ Dataset (CHROD) exhibited an acceptable accuracy at different spatial-temporal scales. Additionally, O₃ concentrations showed decreasing trend and represented obviously spatiotemporal heterogeneity across China from 2018 to 2020. Overall, O₃ was mainly affected by human activities in higher urbanization regions, while O₃ was mainly controlled by meteorological factors, vegetation coverage, and elevation in lower urbanization regions. The scheme of this study is useful and valuable in understanding the mechanism of O₃ formation and improving the quality of the O₃ dataset.

A review about COVID-19 in the MENA region: environmental concerns and machine learning applications

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has delayed global economic growth, which has affected the economic life globally. On the one hand, numerous elements in the environment impact the transmission of this new coronavirus. Every country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) area has a different population density, air quality and contaminants, and water- and land-related conditions, all of which influence coronavirus transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) has advocated fast evaluations to guide policymakers with timely evidence to respond to the situation. This review makes four unique contributions. One, many data about the transmission of the new coronavirus in various sorts of settings to provide clear answers to the current dispute over the virus's transmission were reviewed. Two, highlight the most significant application of machine learning to forecast and diagnose severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Three, our insights provide timely and accurate information along with compelling suggestions and methodical directions for investigators. Four, the present study provides decision-makers and community leaders with information on the effectiveness of environmental controls for COVID-19 dissemination.

Optical and Microphysical Properties of the Aerosol Field over Sofia, Bulgaria, Based on AERONET Sun-Photometer Measurements

An analysis of the optical and microphysical characteristics of aerosol passages over Sofia City, Bulgaria, was performed on the basis of data provided by the AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET). The data considered are the result of two nearly complete annual cycles of passive optical remote sensing of the atmosphere above the Sofia Site using a Cimel CE318-TS9 sun/sky/lunar photometer functioning since 5 May 2020. The values of the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and the Ångström Exponent (AE) measured during each annual cycle and the overall two-year cycle exhibited similar statistics. The two-year mean AODs were 0.20 (±0.11) and 0.17 (±0.10) at the wavelengths of 440 nm (AOD440) and 500 nm, respectively. The two-year mean AEs at the wavelength pairs 440/870 nm (AE440/870) and 380/500 nm were 1.45 (±0.35) and 1.32 (±0.29). The AOD values obtained reach maxima in winter-to-spring and summer and were about two times smaller than those obtained 15 years ago using a hand-held Microtops II sun photometer. The AOD440 and AE440/870 frequency distributions outline two AOD and three AE modes, i.e., 3 × 2 groups of aerosol events identifiable using AOD–AE-based aerosol classifications, additional aerosol characteristics, and aerosol migration models. The aerosol load over the city was estimated to consist most frequently of urban (63.4%) aerosols. The relative occurrences of desert dust, biomass-burning aerosols, and mixed aerosols were, respectively, 8.0%, 9.1% and 19.5%.

A High-Performance Convolutional Neural Network for Ground-Level Ozone Estimation in Eastern China

Having a high-quality historical air pollutant dataset is critical for environmental and epidemiological research. In this study, a novel deep learning model based on convolutional neural network architecture was developed to estimate ground-level ozone concentrations across eastern China. A high-resolution maximum daily average 8-hour (MDA8) surface ground ozone concentration dataset was generated with the support of the total ozone column from the satellite Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument, meteorological data from the China Meteorological Administration Land Data Assimilation System, and simulations of the WRF-Chem model. The modeled results were compared with in situ measurements in five cities that were not involved in model training, and the mean R2 of predicted ozone with observed values was 0.9, indicating the good robustness of our model. In addition, we compared the model results with some widely used machine learning techniques (e.g., random forest) and recently published ozone datasets, showing that the accuracy of our model is higher and that the spatial distributions of predicted ozone are more coherent. This study provides an efficient and exact method to estimate ground-level ozone and offers a new perspective for modeling spatiotemporal air pollutants.

The impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on surface urban heat island changes and air-quality improvements across 21 major cities in the Middle East

This study investigates changes in air quality conditions during the restricted COVID-19 lockdown period in 2020 across 21 metropolitan areas in the Middle East and how these relate to surface urban heat island (SUHI) characteristics. Based on satellite observations of atmospheric gases from Sentinel-5, results indicate significant reductions in the levels of atmospheric pollutants, particularly nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO). Air quality improved significantly during the middle phases of the lockdown (April and May), especially in small metropolitan cities like Amman, Beirut, and Jeddah, while it was less significant in "mega" cities like Cairo, Tehran, and Istanbul. For example, the concentrations of NO2 in Amman, Beirut, and Jeddah decreased by -56.6%, -43.4%, and -32.3%, respectively, during April 2020, compared to April 2019. Rather, there was a small decrease in NO2 levels in megacities like Tehran (-0.9%) and Cairo (-3.1%). Notably, during the lockdown period, there was a decrease in the mean intensity of nighttime SUHI, while the mean intensity of daytime SUHI experienced either an increase or a slight decrease across these locations. Together with the Gulf metropolitans (e.g. Kuwait, Dubai, and Muscat), the megacities (e.g. Tehran, Ankara, and Istanbul) exhibited anomalous increases in the intensity of daytime SUHI, which may exceed 2 °C. Statistical relationships were established to explore the association between changes in the mean intensity and the hotspot area in each metropolitan location during the lockdown. The findings indicate that the mean intensity of SUHI and the spatial extension of hotspot areas within each metropolitan had a statistically significant negative relationship, with Pearson's r values generally exceeding - 0.55, especially for daytime SUHI. This negative dependency was evident for both daytime and nighttime SUHI during all months of the lockdown. Our findings demonstrate that the decrease in primary pollutant levels during the lockdown contributed to the decrease in the intensity of nighttime SUHIs in the Middle East, especially in April and May. Changes in the characteristics of SUHIs during the lockdown period should be interpreted in the context of long-term climate change, rather than just the consequence of restrictive measures. This is simply because short-term air quality improvements were insufficient to generate meaningful changes in the region's urban climate.

An Assessment of the Hydrological Trends Using Synergistic Approaches of Remote Sensing and Model Evaluations over Global Arid and Semi-Arid Regions

Drylands cover about 40% of the world’s land area and support two billion people, most of them living in developing countries that are at risk due to land degradation. Over the last few decades, there has been warming, with an escalation of drought and rapid population growth. This will further intensify the risk of desertification, which will seriously affect the local ecological environment, food security and people’s lives. The goal of this research is to analyze the hydrological and land cover characteristics and variability over global arid and semi-arid regions over the last decade (2010–2019) using an integrative approach of remotely sensed and physical process-based numerical modeling (e.g., Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) and Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Land Data Assimilation System (FLDAS) models) data. Interaction between hydrological and ecological indicators including precipitation, evapotranspiration, surface soil moisture and vegetation indices are presented in the global four types of arid and semi-arid areas. The trends followed by precipitation, evapotranspiration and surface soil moisture over the decade are also mapped using harmonic analysis. This study also shows that some hotspots in these global drylands, which exhibit different processes of land cover change, demonstrate strong coherency with noted groundwater variations. Various types of statistical measures are computed using the satellite and model derived values over global arid and semi-arid regions. Comparisons between satellite- (NASA-USDA Surface Soil Moisture and MODIS Evapotranspiration data) and model (FLDAS and GLDAS)-derived values over arid regions (BSh, BSk, BWh and BWk) have shown the over and underestimation with low accuracy. Moreover, general consistency is apparent in most of the regions between GLDAS and FLDAS model, while a strong discrepancy is also observed in some regions, especially appearing in the Nile Basin downstream hyper-arid region. Data-driven modelling approaches are thus used to enhance the models’ performance in this region, which shows improved results in multiple statistical measures ((RMSE), bias (ψ), the mean absolute percentage difference (|ψ|)) and the linear regression coefficients (i.e., slope, intercept, and coefficient of determination (R2)).

Earth Observation and Cloud Computing in Support of Two Sustainable Development Goals for the River Nile Watershed Countries

In September 2015, the members of United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with universal applicability of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. The SDGs are consequential for the development of the countries in the Nile watershed, which are affected by water scarcity and experiencing rapid urbanization associated with population growth. Earth Observation (EO) has become an important tool to monitor the progress and implementation of specific SDG targets through its wide accessibility and global coverage. In addition, the advancement of algorithms and tools deployed in cloud computing platforms provide an equal opportunity to use EO for developing countries with limited technological capacity. This study applies EO and cloud computing in support of the SDG 6 “clean water and sanitation” and SDG 11 “sustainable cities and communities” in the seven Nile watershed countries through investigations of EO data related to indicators of water stress (Indicator 6.4.2) and urbanization and living conditions (Indicators 11.3.1 and 11.1.1), respectively. Multiple approaches including harmonic, time series and correlational analysis are used to assess and evaluate these indicators. In addition, a contemporary deep-learning classifier, fully convolution neural networks (FCNN), was trained to classify the percentage of impervious surface areas. The results show the spatial and temporal water recharge pattern among different regions in the Nile watershed, as well as the urbanization in selected cities of the region. It is noted that the classifier trained from the developed countries (i.e., the United States) is effective in identifying modern communities yet limited in monitoring rural and slum regions.

Change Detection of Soil Formation Rate in Space and Time Based on Multi Source Data and Geospatial Analysis Techniques

Spatialization of soil formation rate (SFR) is always a difficult problem in soil genesis. In this study, the dissolution rate in karst areas of China during the period 1983–2015 was estimated on the basis of geospatial analysis techniques and detection of variation via the law of chemical thermodynamics in conjunction with long-term serial ecohydrology data. SFR at different lithological backgrounds was calculated on the basis of the content of acid-insoluble substances. Results showed that the spatial dissolution rate of carbonate rock ranges between 0 and 106 mm/ka, averaged at 22.51 mm/ka, and the SFR ranges between 10 and 134.93 t km−2 yr−1, averaged at 18.59 t km−2 yr−1. The dissolution rate and SFR exhibit a slight increasing trend with 0.04 mm/ka and 0.003 t km−2 yr−1, respectively. The risk for soil erosion was reevaluated on the basis of the SFR results, and the area with erosion risk and the ecologically safe area were corrected. Results indicated that the area with erosion risk is four times higher than the ecologically safe area. This study will hopefully instigate and facilitate the application and popularization of geospatial analysis technology to the research field of rock weathering and soil formation.
