Further, a comparative revision has been accomplished on various procedures of urea analysis using different materials-based biosensors, and it discloses that electrochemical and potentiometric biosensor is the most promise one among all, in terms of rapid response time, extensive shelf life and resourceful design.

Two-Channel Graphene pH Sensor Using Semi-Ionic Fluorinated Graphene Reference Electrode

A reference electrode is necessary for the working of ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET)-type sensors in electrolyte solutions. The Ag/AgCl electrode is normally used as a reference electrode. However, the Ag/AgCl reference electrode limits the advantages of the ISFET sensor. In this work, we fabricated a two-channel graphene solution gate field-effect transistor (G-SGFET) to detect pH without an Ag/AgCl reference electrode in the electrolyte solution. One channel is the sensing channel for detecting the pH and the other channel is the reference channel that serves as the reference electrode. The sensing channel was oxygenated, and the reference channel was fluorinated partially. Both the channels were directly exposed to the electrolyte solution without sensing membranes or passivation layers. The transfer characteristics of the two-channel G-SGFET showed ambipolar field-effect transistor (FET) behavior (p-channel and n-channel), which is a typical characteristic curve for the graphene ISFET, and the value of V_Dirac was shifted by 18.2 mV/pH in the positive direction over the range of pH values from 4 to 10. The leakage current of the reference channel was 16.48 nA. We detected the real-time pH value for the two-channel G-SGFET, which operated stably for 60 min in the buffer solution.

Nafion-Radical Hybrid Films on Carbon Nanotube Transistors for Monitoring Antipsychotic Drug Effects on Stimulated Dopamine Release

We developed floating electrode-based carbon nanotube biosensors for the monitoring of antipsychotic drug effects on the dopamine release from PC12 cells under potassium stimulation. Here, carbon nanotube field-effect transistors with floating electrodes were functionalized with 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS^•) radicals by Nafion films. This method allows us to build selective biosensors for dopamine detection with a detection limit down to 10 nM even in the presence of other neurotransmitters such as glutamate and acetylcholine, resulting from the selective interaction between ABTS^• radicals and dopamine. The sensors were also utilized to monitor the real-time release of dopamine from PC12 cells upon the stimulation of high-concentrated potassium solutions. Significantly, the antipsychotic effects of pimozide on the dopamine release from potassium-stimulated PC12 cells could also be evaluated in a concentration-dependent manner by using the sensors. The quantitative and real-time evaluation capability of our strategy should provide a versatile tool for many biomedical studies and applications.

Design of a high sensitive double-gate field-effect transistor biosensor for DNA detection

The study of interactions between organic biomolecules and semiconducting surfaces is an important consideration for the design and fabrication of field-effect-transistor (FET) biosensor. This paper demonstrates DNA detection by employing a double-gate field effect transistor (DGFET). In addition, an investigation of sensitivity and signal to noise ratio (SNR) is carried out for different values of analyte concentration, buffer ion concentration, pH, reaction constant, etc. Sensitivity, which is indicated by the change of drain current, increases non-linearly after a specific value (~ 1 nM) of analyte concentration and decreases non-linearly with buffer ion concentration. However, sensitivity is linearly related to the fluidic gate voltage. The drain current has a significant effect on the positive surface group (-NH(2)) compared to the negative counterpart (-OH). Furthermore, the sensor has the same response at a particular value of pH (5.76) irrespective of the density of surface group, although it decreases with pH value. The signal to noise ratio is improved with higher analyte concentrations and receptor densities.
