Optical sensing with simultaneous electrochemical control in metal nanowire arrays

Fast and Versatile Multiscale Patterning by Combining Template-Stripping with Nanotransfer Printing

Metal nanostructures are widely used in plasmonic and electronic applications due to their inherent properties. Often, the fabrication of such nanostructures is limited to small areas, as the processing is costly, low-throughput, and comprises harsh fabrication conditions. Here, we introduce a template-stripping based nanotransfer printing method to overcome these limitations. This versatile technique enables the transfer of arbitrary thin film metal structures onto a variety of substrates, including glass, Kapton, silicon, and PDMS. Structures can range from tens of nanometers to hundreds of micrometers over a wafer scale area. The process is organic solvent-free, multilayer compatible, and only takes minutes to perform. The stability of the transferred gold structures on glass exceeds by far those fabricated by e-beam evaporation. Therefore, an adhesion layer is no longer needed, enabling a faster and cheaper fabrication as well as the production of superior nanostructures. Structures can be transferred onto curved substrates, and the technique is compatible with roll-to-roll fabrication; thus, the process is suitable for flexible and stretchable electronics.

Real-Time Optical Monitoring of Pt Catalyst Under the Potentiodynamic Conditions

In situ monitoring of electrode materials reveals detailed physicochemical transition in electrochemical device. The key challenge is to explore the localized features of electrode surfaces, since the performance of an electrochemical device is determined by the summation of local architecture of the electrode material. Adaptive in situ techniques have been developed for numerous investigations; however, they require restricted measurement environments and provide limited information, which has impeded their widespread application. In this study, we realised an optics-based electrochemical in situ monitoring system by combining a dark-field micro/spectroscopy with an electrochemical workstation to investigate the physicochemical behaviours of Pt catalyst. We found that the localized plasmonic trait of a Pt-decorated Au nanoparticle as a model system varied in terms of its intensity and wavelength during the iterations of a cyclic voltammetry test. Furthermore, we show that morphological and compositional changes of the Pt catalyst can be traced in real time using changes in quantified plasmonic characteristics, which is a distinct advantage over the conventional electrochemistry-based in situ monitoring systems. These results indicate the substantial promise of online operando observation in a wide range of electrical energy conversion systems and electrochemical sensing areas.

Simultaneous electrical and plasmonic monitoring of potential induced ion adsorption on metal nanowire arrays

Simultaneous LSPR and electronic sensing of potential induced ion adsorption onto gold nanowire arrays is presented. The formation of a Stern layer upon applying an electrochemical potential generated a complex optical response. Simulation of a lossy atomic layer on the nanowire array using the Multiple Multipole Program (MMP) corresponded very well to the experimentally observed peak position, intensity, and radius of curvature changes. Additionally, a significant voltage-dependent change in the resistance of the gold nanowire array was observed during the controlled formation of the electrical double layer. The results demonstrated that an applied electrochemical potential induces measurable changes in the optical and electrical properties of the gold nanowire surface. This is the first demonstration of combined plasmonic and nanowire resistance-based sensing of a surface process in the literature.

Nanoplasmonic sensing of metal-halide complex formation and the electric double layer capacitor

Many nanotechnological devices are based on implementing electrochemistry with plasmonic nanostructures, but these systems are challenging to understand. We present a detailed study of the influence of electrochemical potentials on plasmon resonances, in the absence of surface coatings and redox active molecules, by synchronized voltammetry and spectroscopy. The experiments are performed on gold nanodisks and nanohole arrays in thin gold films, which are fabricated by improved methods. New insights are provided by high resolution spectroscopy and variable scan rates. Furthermore, we introduce new analytical models in order to understand the spectral changes quantitatively. In contrast to most previous literature, we find that the plasmonic signal is caused almost entirely by the formation of ionic complexes on the metal surface, most likely gold chloride in this study. The refractometric sensing effect from the ions in the electric double layer can be fully neglected, and the charging of the metal gives a surprisingly small effect for these systems. Our conclusions are consistent for both localized nanoparticle plasmons and propagating surface plasmons. We consider the results in this work especially important in the context of combined electrochemical and optical sensors.

Controlled in situ nanoscale enhancement of gold nanowire arrays with plasmonics

The controlled in situ growth of ordered gold nanoparticles and nanowire arrays has been studied by optically tracking changes in the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectrum. A spectrometer and custom-programmed analysis software track changes in the LSPR spectrum. The peak position, peak height (i.e. extinction intensity) and peak width (e.g. radius of curvature) were tracked over time to quantify the dynamic growth of gold as soon as the system was exposed to a commercial gold enhancement solution. This enables the controlled dynamic growth of nano-objects without the necessity of characterizing the growth and aggregation kinetics of the gold enhancement solution. The result was the successful enhancement of their electrically conductive and plasmonic properties, as well as the controlled growth and transformation of line-patterned nanoparticles into conductive particle-based nanowires.
