Abstract
Copper is one of the common among the heavy metal pollution in Chinese herbal medicine (CHM). So, it is essential to develop rapid and accurate testing method to quantify the Cu2+ content in CHM. Herein, we prepared a coordination-based near-infrared fluorescent probe (NRh6G-FA) by introducing a hemicyanine dye in rhodamine 6G scaffold. NRh6G-FA had a high sensitivity, anti-interference performance, fast response (within 60 s), visualization (from light yellow to green) for Cu2+ and excellent sensing performance for the detection of Cu2+ at low concentrations (LOD = 0.225 μM). The most likely mechanism was verified on the basis of Job's plot, ESI-HRMS and DFT calculations. NRh6G-FA could be successfully applied for the detection and "naked eye" recognition of Cu2+ in CHM samples. Moreover, NRh6G-FA was used to visualize Cu2+ in living MCF-7 cells by confocal fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
Two azo dyes, (E)-3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yldiazenyl)-4-hydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one (3CBD) and (E)-4-hydroxy-3-(quinolin-2-yldiazenyl)-2H-chromen-2-one (3CQD), were designed and synthesized using facile methods. The structures were validated through FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The photophysical property analyses were further studied using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrophotometers. Consequently, the absorption and emission spectra of 3CBD confirmed its selectivity of Hg2+ and turn-off response to Fe3+. On the other hand, the absorption spectra analysis of 3CQD demonstrated selectivity in the presence of Hg2+. The colorimetric investigations demonstrated a significant visual response specifically for Hg2+, enabling real-time analysis in the corresponding solutions. The presence of other coexisting metal ions does not interfere with the detection of the target metal ion. The fluorescence studies of the two probes revealed that 3CBD was highly fluorescent, which was significantly quenched by Fe3+, upon excitation at 340 nm. Utilizing Job plot analyses, it was determined that the complexes 3CBD-Hg2+ and 3CQD-Hg2+ exhibit a binding stoichiometry of 1 : 1. The association constants for these complexes were measured to be 7.48 × 105 and 9.12 × 105 M-1, respectively, indicating a strong association between both probes and their respective metal ions. Both chemosensors exhibited comparable limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) of 0.03 μM and 0.10 μM, respectively. Reversible studies confirmed that only chemosensor 3CQD could serve as a secondary sensor for EDTA. The theoretical studies calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) program at B3LYP/6-31G** (Spartan '10 package) level.

Abstract
In this work, yellow emissive carbon dots (Y-CDs) were prepared via a simple hydrothermal method using catechol and hydrazine hydrate as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The average particle size was 2.99 nm. The Y-CDs demonstrate excitation-dependent emission properties, and the maximum emission wavelength is 570 nm at E x = 420 nm. The fluorescence quantum yield is calculated to be 28.2%. Ag+ could quench the fluorescence of Y-CDs with high selectivity. The quenching mechanism was further explored by various characterization techniques. A sensitive fluorescent probe for Ag+ detection was established based on Y-CDs with a linear range of 3-300 μM. The detection limit was calculated to be 1.1 μM. The proposed method shows satisfactory results in real water samples without interference by coexistence.

Abstract
Anthracene based chemosensor ABC has been synthesized and characterized through 1H, 13C NMR, mass spectral studies. UV absorption and emission studies performed to identify the sensing behavior of chemosensor ABC. The probe ABC, originally bright fluorescent, selectively sense Ag+ ion by the quenching the fluorescence intensity through a "Switch On-off" process and quench the fluorescence due to the heavy atom effect interaction with the free chemosensor. The binding constant of the probe ABC with Ag+ was calculated as 5.4 × 104 M-1 and the limit of detection upto 1.4 nM level. The practical utilization of the probe ABC was demonstrated by applying to the real water and soil sample analysis, latent finger print, and the sensor as a fluorescent ink.

Abstract
In this study, a sensitive ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor was constructed using a facile one-pot method by encapsulating carbon dots (CDs) and cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) into the pore cavities of a metal-organic framework (ZIF-8). In this nanosensor (CD/CdTe QD@ZIF-8), the fluorescence attributed to CdTe QDs was quenched by silver ions (Ag+), and the fluorescence intensity of CDs did not change. The introduction of ZIF-8 into the system can not only adsorb Ag+ but also easily separate CDs and CdTe QDs from the matrix. The developed CD/CdTe QD@ZIF-8 composite used as a ratiometric fluorescent probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards Ag+. The working linear range was 0.1-20 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.49 nM. Finally, the proposed nanosensor was applied to determine Ag+ in lake water with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A new near-infrared (NIR) probe based on a coumarinyl ligand (CL) was designed and synthesized. The probe CL can be used for simultaneous fluorescent turn-on and colorimetric detection of Hg2+ and Ag+ in ethanol/water medium. Colorless solution of probe CL changed to light yellow or dark yellow after addition of Hg2+ or Ag+ ions. Meanwhile the maximum absorption band shifted from 379 nm to 404 nm and the intensity increased enormously (for Hg2+) or moderately (for Ag+). Probe CL displayed an extraordinarily large Stokes shift of 316 nm and addition of Hg2+ or Ag+ to probe CL induced enhancement in the intensity of fluorescence emission at 695 nm by 15 or 8 fold. The detection limit of CL for Hg2+ and Ag+ ions is 0.83 and 8.8 μM, respectively. The applicable pH for sensing Hg2+ by probe CL is in a broad range of 2-12. Application of probe CL for in vitro U87MG cell imaging to detect Hg2+ ions was confirmed.

Abstract
A super simple ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor has been fabricated by controlling the ligands of CdZnTe quantum dots (QDs), allowing the sensitive and visual detection of silver ions (Ag+). The green-emitting L-cysteine-protected CdZnTe QDs (Lcys-CdZnTe QDs) had a specific response to Ag+ and were used as the reporting probe, while the red-emitting N-acetyl-L-cysteine-protected CdZnTe QDs (NAC-CdZnTe QDs) showed no obvious response to all tested metal ions and were selected as the reference probe. Simply mixing them without any encapsulated synthesis ultimately produced a time-saving, low-cost detection method, allowing the sensitive and visual detection of Ag+ in samples. The proposed nanosensor exhibited a linear range of 0.5-4.0 μM along with a detection limit of 0.17 μM, and has been successfully applied in real tap water and lake water samples. This nanosensor also showed obvious color changes in the detection process and has potential in visual semi-quantitative detection. Our approach may provide a general and feasible strategy for designing ratiometric fluorescence nanosensors, which will attract a wide range of interest in sensing-related fields.

Abstract
A ditopic multi-colorimetric probe based on the phenylpridyl-thioic moiety (EN) was synthesized via a Schiff base reaction mechanism and characterized using 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The colorimetric analyses carried out revealed that EN was capable of discriminating between a number of heavy metal cations via coordination induced charge transfer, as well as between anions through hydrogen bonding induced charge transfer, in DMSO–H2O (9 : 1). In particular, the ditopic probe could spectrally and colorimetrically recognize the most toxic heavy metal cations of Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+, among others, in DMSO–H2O. Additionally, EN was selective and sensitive to the presence of CN−, F−, AcO− and H2PO4− in the same solvent system as cations. The reversibility and reproducibility studies showed that EN exhibited complementary IMP/INH logic functions, based on colour and spectral switching (ON/OFF), modulated by F−/Al3+. The real time application of the probe was tested on food grade products to detect the presence of F− in toothpastes and mouthwash dissolved in water, as well as cations in underground water (normally saline), which displayed substantial responses. Thus, EN displayed an excellent scope of response and can thus be developed for real time sensing kits, which could be used instantly in on-field analysis. Theoretical studies were conducted to complement the experimental work. A ditopic multi-colorimetric probe based on the phenylpridyl-thioic moiety (EN) was synthesized via a Schiff base reaction mechanism and characterized using 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy.![]()

Abstract
In the present work, a phenanthroline derivative (2-(2-methoxyphenyl)-4-phenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, MPP), as a fluorescent probe, was synthesized to realize a rapid, simple and sensitive detection of silver(I). The detection conditions of Ag+ were optimized. This fluorescent probe has the advantages of a fast reaction time, a wide pH applicable range, and a low detection limit, exhibiting a good linear response between the fluorescence intensity and the concentration in the range of 0.05 - 1.5 μmol/L for Ag+. The detection limit is as low as 3.38 × 10-8 mol/L (S/N = 3). This probe had been used to detect Ag+ in real samples, and the recovery efficiency of spiked Ag+ had been also tested. The recovery efficiency is satisfactory, ranging from 92.0 to 105.4%. Therefore, this fluorescent probe should provide a new choice for the quantitative detection of silver ions in environmental water samples.

Abstract
The quantification of silver nanoparticles and Ag+ contamination in the aquatic ecosystem has attracted considerable interest. Benzoimidazolyl-cyanovinylene (1) was synthesized as an aggregation-induced emission fluorophore, and a fluorescent peptidyl probe (2 and 3) bearing this fluorophore was developed. The fluorescent peptidyl probes coordinated with Ag+ selectively among various metal ions, leading to a ratiometric response to Ag+ in pure aqueous solutions. Furthermore, an "in situ" protocol was developed to quantify AgNPs using 2 with H2O2 as an oxidizing reagent. The fluorescent detection method for Ag+ and AgNPs showed promising detection properties such as high selectivity, high sensitivity, fast response, visible light excitation, well-operations in pure aqueous solution, and large fluorescent signal change. The detection limits of Ag+ (0.64 ppb) and AgNPs (1.1 ppb) were significantly low. According to the binding mode study, Ag+ induced the formation of a 2:1 complex between 2 and Ag+ and the chirality of the peptide part of the probe was not critical for this process. The formation of aggregates of the probe triggered by Ag+ from AgNPs induced a significant change in fluorescence. Furthermore, the amounts of spiked AgNPs in groundwater and tap water were quantified using the fluorescent detection method with 2.

The sensor exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for Ag+ over 16 metal ions in 100 mM sodium perchlorate and 50 mM 2-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-1-yl]ethanesulfonic acid buffer solution by fluorescence resonance energy transfer. The 1:1 binding stoichiometry of the sensor and Ag+ is measured by fluorescence ratio response and the job's plot. The dissociation constant of the sensor with Ag+ was calculated to be 6.4 × 10-9 M, which indicates that the sensor has an effective binding affinity for Ag+. In addition, the limit of detection of the sensor for Ag+ was determined to be 80 nM, which also indicates that the sensor has a high sensitivity to Ag+. Result showed that the sensor is an excellent Ag+ sensor under neutral condition. Furthermore, this sensor displays good practicality for Ag+ detection in river water samples without performing tedious sample pretreatment, as well as for silver chloride detection.

Abstract
A novel chemosensor 1 based on a naphthol-bisthiazolopyridine hybrid was synthesized and characterized. Among the various screened cations and anions, chemosensor 1 selectively recognized Ag+ and CN- ions by relying on the color change and distinct absorption and emission changes. Moreover, the probe 1·Ag+ was well operable for the selective monitoring of S2-, HS- and H2S as evidenced by the different color and optical changes. The selective detection of all the anions was simply based on the breakage of the intramolecular hydrogen bonding of 1, followed by the protonation or deprotonation mechanism. In general, chemosensor 1 is a promising indicator in terms of its ease-of-use, selectivity, sensitivity, and rapid response (<1 s). Moreover, the visual detection and concentration determination of these analytes by solution or solid kits are the advantages for the practical applications of this sensor.

Abstract
In this study, an imidazole-coumarin based fluorescent probe was developed for the selective and sensitive detection of Ag+ in aqueous solution. Using a combination of Job plot, NMR titrations, and DFT calculations, the binding properties between Ag+ and the probe were deeply investigated, and the results revealed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry between the probe and Ag+ with a binding constant of 1.02 × 106 M-1. The detection limit was found to be 150 nM, which satisfies the requirement for the quantitative detection of Ag+ in real water samples. Moreover, the new probe, Ic, was successfully applied to sense Ag+ in HeLa and HepG2 cells as well as in C. elegans, indicating that it could be a useful tool for the environmental monitoring of Ag+ pollution. These results demonstrated that Ic could serve as a high-efficiency and low-cost fluorescent probe for tracking Ag+ in an aquatic environment and biological organisms.
