SIFSpec: Measuring Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Observations for Remote Sensing of Photosynthesis

Ground far-red sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence and vegetation indices in the US Midwestern agroecosystems

Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) provides an opportunity to study terrestrial ecosystem photosynthesis dynamics. However, the current coarse spatiotemporal satellite SIF products are challenging for mechanistic interpretations of SIF signals. Long-term ground SIF and vegetation indices (VIs) are important for satellite SIF validation and mechanistic understanding of the relationship between SIF and photosynthesis when combined with leaf- and canopy-level auxiliary measurements. In this study, we present and analyze a total of 15 site-years of ground far-red SIF (SIF at 760 nm, SIF760) and VIs datasets from soybean, corn, and miscanthus grown in the U.S. Corn Belt from 2016 to 2021. We introduce a comprehensive data processing protocol, including different retrieval methods, calibration coefficient adjustment, and nadir SIF footprint upscaling to match the eddy covariance footprint. This long-term ground far-red SIF and VIs dataset provides important and first-hand data for far-red SIF interpretation and understanding the mechanistic relationship between far-red SIF and canopy photosynthesis across various crop species and environmental conditions.

Water stress significantly affects the diurnal variation of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF): A case study for winter wheat

Remote sensing of Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been widely used in estimating Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) and detecting stress in terrestrial ecosystems. Water stress adversely impacts the growth, development, and productivity of a plant. Recently, the characterizing and understanding of the diurnal cycling of plant functioning and ecosystem processes has been explored using SIF. However, the diurnal response of SIF to different levels of water stress remains unclear. This study conducted field experiments on winter wheat by subjecting it to different levels of water stress including well-watered (CK) and, mild, moderate, and severe water stress (D1, D2, D3), and collected the spectral data using an automated SIF measurement system. The results observed the strong SIF-PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) correlations and that these relationships gradually decoupled with increasing water stress, which further decreased the accuracy of temporal upscaling of far-red SIF from an instantaneous to daily scale. To quantify the characteristics of diurnal far-red SIF, five indices including peak time, peak value, curve opening coefficient (leading coefficient of the parabola), and left/right slopes of the peak were proposed. The results demonstrated that diurnal far-red SIF was characterized by an earlier peak time, decreasing peak value, wider curve opening, and flattening right slope from the CK plot to the D3 plot. There were certain mechanisms linking the different indices, for example, between peak size and opening coefficient. Furthermore, the response of far-red SIF to water stress was most pronounced at noon. SIF/PAR exhibited a more significant response to varying water stress compared to far-red SIF, which mitigated the negative influence of PAR variations on diurnal SIF. These findings contribute to the monitoring of plant water dynamics at fine temporal scales.

Enhancing Leaf Area Index Estimation for Maize with Tower-Based Multi-Angular Spectral Observations

The leaf area index (LAI) played a crucial role in ecological, hydrological, and climate models. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has been a widely used tool for LAI estimation. However, the NDVI quickly saturates in dense vegetation and is susceptible to soil background interference in sparse vegetation. We proposed a multi-angular NDVI (MAVI) to enhance LAI estimation using tower-based multi-angular observations, aiming to minimize the interference of soil background and saturation effects. Our methodology involved collecting continuous tower-based multi-angular reflectance and the LAI over a three-year period in maize cropland. Then we proposed the MAVI based on an analysis of how canopy reflectance varies with solar zenith angle (SZA). Finally, we quantitatively evaluated the MAVI's performance in LAI retrieval by comparing it to eight other vegetation indices (VIs). Statistical tests revealed that the MAVI exhibited an improved curvilinear relationship with the LAI when the NDVI is corrected using multi-angular observations (R2 = 0.945, RMSE = 0.345, rRMSE = 0.147). Furthermore, the MAVI-based model effectively mitigated soil background effects in sparse vegetation (R2 = 0.934, RMSE = 0.155, rRMSE = 0.157). Our findings demonstrated the utility of tower-based multi-angular spectral observations in LAI retrieval, having the potential to provide continuous data for validating space-borne LAI products. This research significantly expanded the potential applications of multi-angular observations.

Active and passive chlorophyll fluorescence measurements at canopy level on potato crops. Evidence of similitude of diurnal cycles of apparent fluorescence yields

We performed active and passive measurements of diurnal cycles of chlorophyll fluorescence on potato crops at canopy level in outdoors conditions for 26 days. Active measurements of the stationary fluorescence yield (Fs) were performed using Ledflex, a fluorescence micro-LIDAR described in Moya et al. (Photosynth Res 142:1-15, 2019), capable of remote measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence under full sun-light in the wavelength range from 650 to 800 nm. Passive measurements of solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) fluxes were performed with Spectroflex, an instrument based on the method of filling-in in the O₂A and O₂B absorption bands at 760 nm (F760) and 687 nm (F687), respectively.Diurnal cycles of Fs showed significant variations throughout the day, directly attributed to changes in photosystem II yield. Contrasting patterns were observed according to illumination conditions. Under cloudy sky, Fs varied in parallel with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). By contrast, during clear sky days, the diurnal cycle of Fs showed a "M" shape pattern with a minimum around noon.F687 and F760 showed different patterns, according to illumination conditions. Under low irradiance associated with cloudy conditions, F687 and F760 followed similar diurnal patterns, in parallel with PAR. Under high irradiance associated with clear sky we observed an increase of the F760/F687 ratio, which we attributed to the contributions in the 760 nm emission of photosystem I fluorescence from deeper layers of the leaves, on one end, and by the decrease of 687 nm emission as a result of red fluorescence re-absorption, on the other end.We defined an approach to derive a proxy of fluorescence yield (FYSIF) from SIF measurements as a linear combination of F687 and F760 normalized by vegetation radiance, where the coefficients of the linear combination were derived from the spectral transmittance of Ledflex. We demonstrated a close relationship between diurnal cycles of FYSIF and Fs, which outperformed other approaches based on normalization by incident light.

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence imperfectly tracks the temperature response of photosynthesis in winter wheat

Solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) is a promising proxy for photosynthesis, but it is unclear whether it performs well in tracking the gross primary productivity (GPP) under different environmental conditions. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of the two parameters from October 2020 to June 2021 in field-grown winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) and found that the ability of SIF to track GPP was weakened at low temperatures. Accounting for the coupling of light and temperature at a seasonal scale, we found that SIF yield showed a lower temperature sensitivity and had a lower but broader optimal temperature range compared with light-use efficiency (LUE), although both SIF yield and LUE decreased in low-temperature conditions. The discrepancy between the temperature responses of SIF yield and GPP caused an increase in the ratio of SIF/GPP in winter, which indicated the variation in the relationship between them during this period. The results of our study highlight the impact of low temperature on the relationship between SIF and GPP and show the necessity of reconsidering the dynamics of energy distribution inside plants under changing environments.

Proximal and remote sensing in plant phenomics: 20 years of progress, challenges, and perspectives

Plant phenomics (PP) has been recognized as a bottleneck in studying the interactions of genomics and environment on plants, limiting the progress of smart breeding and precise cultivation. High-throughput plant phenotyping is challenging owing to the spatio-temporal dynamics of traits. Proximal and remote sensing (PRS) techniques are increasingly used for plant phenotyping because of their advantages in multi-dimensional data acquisition and analysis. Substantial progress of PRS applications in PP has been observed over the last two decades and is analyzed here from an interdisciplinary perspective based on 2972 publications. This progress covers most aspects of PRS application in PP, including patterns of global spatial distribution and temporal dynamics, specific PRS technologies, phenotypic research fields, working environments, species, and traits. Subsequently, we demonstrate how to link PRS to multi-omics studies, including how to achieve multi-dimensional PRS data acquisition and processing, how to systematically integrate all kinds of phenotypic information and derive phenotypic knowledge with biological significance, and how to link PP to multi-omics association analysis. Finally, we identify three future perspectives for PRS-based PP: (1) strengthening the spatial and temporal consistency of PRS data, (2) exploring novel phenotypic traits, and (3) facilitating multi-omics communication.

Effects of Low Temperature on the Relationship between Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence and Gross Primary Productivity across Different Plant Function Types

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been recognized as a proxy of gross primary production (GPP) across various terrestrial biomes. However, the effects of low temperature on SIF and GPP among different plant function types (PFTs) have not yet been well-explored. To gain a better understanding of the relationship between SIF and GPP, we investigated the variation in the GPP/SIF ratio in response to low-temperature conditions using satellite and tower-based datasets. Based on the TROPOMI SIF product and FLUXCOM GPP data, we found that the SIF and GPP exhibited consistent seasonal and spatial patterns, while the GPP/SIF ratio differed for different PFTs. The GPP/SIF ratio for forest types was generally higher than 10 gC·d−1·mw−1·nm·sr, whereas the GPP/SIF ratio for grass and crop types was generally lower than 10 gC·d−1·mw−1·nm·sr. In addition, there were noticeable differences in the seasonal pattern of the GPP/SIF ratio between the selected samples that experienced low-temperature stress (below 10 °C, defined as group A) and those that grew under relatively warm conditions (above 10 °C throughout the year, defined as group B). The GPP/SIF ratio for group A generally exhibited a “hump-shaped” seasonal pattern, and that for group B showed a slightly “bowl-shaped” seasonal pattern, which means it is important to consider the effects of temperature on the SIF-GPP relationship. Through linear regression and correlation analysis, we demonstrate that there was a positive correlation between the GPP/SIF ratio and temperature for group A, with a wide temperature range including low-temperature conditions, indicating that, in this case, temperature affected the SIF–GPP relationship; however, for group B—with a temperature higher than 10 °C throughout the year—the GPP/SIF ratio was not consistently affected by temperature. The response of GPP/SIF to low temperature stress was confirmed by tower-based observations at a C3 cropland (C3CRO) site and a boreal evergreen needleleaf forest (BoENF) site. Although the relationship between the GPP/SIF ratio and temperature differed among PFTs, the GPP/SIF ratio decreased under low-temperature conditions for PFTs. Therefore, the GPP/SIF ratio was not constant and was largely influenced by low temperature for different PFTs, thus highlighting the importance of incorporating temperature into SIF-based GPP estimation.

Different Responses of Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence at the Red and Far-Red Bands and Gross Primary Productivity to Air Temperature for Winter Wheat

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is closely related to the light-reaction process and has been recognized as a good indicator for tracking gross primary productivity (GPP). Nevertheless, it has not been widely examined how SIF and GPP respond to temperature. Here, we explored the linkage mechanisms between SIF and GPP in winter wheat based on continuous measurements of canopy SIF (cSIF), GPP, and meteorological data. To separately explore the structural and physiological mechanisms underlying the SIF–GPP relationship, we studied the temperature responses of the estimated light use efficiency (LUEp), canopy-level chlorophyll fluorescence yield (cSIFyield) and photosystem-level chlorophyll fluorescence yield (ΦF) estimated using canopy-scale remote sensing measurements. We found that GPP, red canopy SIF (cSIF688) and far-red canopy SIF (cSIF760) all exhibited a decreasing trend during overwintering periods. However, GPP and cSIF688 showed relatively more obvious changes in response to air temperature (Ta) than cSIF760 did. In addition, the LUEp responded sensitively to Ta (the correlation coefficient, r = 0.83, p-value < 0.01). The cSIFyield_688 and ΦF_688 (ΦF at 688 nm) also exhibited significantly positive correlations with Ta (r > 0.7, p-value < 0.05), while cSIFyield_760 and ΦF_760 (ΦF at 760 nm) were weakly correlated with Ta (r < 0.3, p-value > 0.05) during overwintering periods. The results also show that LUEp was more sensitive to Ta than ΦF, which caused changes in the LUEp/ΦF ratio in response to Ta. By considering the influence of Ta, the GPP estimation based on the total SIF emitted at the photosystem level (tSIF) was improved (with R2 increased by more than 0.12 for tSIF760 and more than 0.05 for tSIF688). Therefore, our results indicate that the LUEp/ΦF ratio is affected by temperature conditions and highlights that the SIF–GPP model should consider the influence of temperature.

Investigating the Performance of Red and Far-Red SIF for Monitoring GPP of Alpine Meadow Ecosystems

Alpine meadow ecosystems are extremely vulnerable to climate change and serve an essential function in terrestrial carbon sinks. Accurately estimating their gross primary productivity (GPP) is essential for understanding the global carbon cycle. Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), as a companion product directly related to plant photosynthesis process, has become an attractive pathway for estimating GPP accurately. To date, the quantitative SIF-GPP relationship in terrestrial ecosystems is not yet clear. Especially, red SIF and far-red SIF present differences in their ability to track GPP under different environmental conditions. In this study, we investigated the performance of SIF at both red and far-red band in monitoring the GPP of an alpine meadow ecosystem based on continuous tower-based observations in 2019 and 2020. The results show that the canopy red SIF (SIFRed) and far-red SIF (SIFFar-red) were both strongly correlated with GPP. SIFRed was comparable to SIFFar-red for monitoring GPP based on comparisons of both half-hourly averaged and daily averaged datasets. Moreover, the relationship between SIFRed and GPP was linearly correlated, while the relationship between SIFFar-red and GPP tended to be nonlinear. At a diurnal scale, dramatic changes in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), air temperature (Ta), and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) all had effects on the slope of the linear fitted line with zero intercept for SIFRed-GPP and SIFFar-red-GPP, and the effect on the slope of the linear fitted line with zero intercept for SIFFar-red-GPP was obviously stronger than that for SIFRed-GPP. PAR was the dominant factor among the three environmental factors in determining the diurnal variation of the slope of SIF-GPP. At a seasonal scale, the SIFFar-red/GPP was susceptible to PAR, Ta, and VPD, while the SIFRed/GPP remained relatively stable at different levels of Ta and VPD, and it was only weakly affected by PAR, suggesting that SIFRed was more consistent than SIFFar-red with GPP in response to seasonal variations in environmental factors. These results indicate that SIFRed has more potential than SIFFar-red for monitoring the GPP of alpine meadow ecosystems and can also assist researchers in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of the diversity of SIF-GPP relationships in different ecosystems.

Machine Learning in the Analysis of Multispectral Reads in Maize Canopies Responding to Increased Temperatures and Water Deficit

Real-time monitoring of crop responses to environmental deviations represents a new avenue for applications of remote and proximal sensing. Combining the high-throughput devices with novel machine learning (ML) approaches shows promise in the monitoring of agricultural production. The 3 × 2 multispectral arrays with responses at 610 and 680 nm (red), 730 and 760 nm (red-edge) and 810 and 860 nm (infrared) spectra were used to assess the occurrence of leaf rolling (LR) in 545 experimental maize plots measured four times for calibration dataset (n = 2180) and 145 plots measured once for external validation. Multispectral reads were used to calculate 15 simple normalized vegetation indices. Four ML algorithms were assessed: single and multilayer perceptron (SLP and MLP), convolutional neural network (CNN) and support vector machines (SVM) in three validation procedures, which were stratified cross-validation, random subset validation and validation with external dataset. Leaf rolling occurrence caused visible changes in spectral responses and calculated vegetation indexes. All algorithms showed good performance metrics in stratified cross-validation (accuracy >80%). SLP was the least efficient in predictions with external datasets, while MLP, CNN and SVM showed comparable performance. Combining ML with multispectral sensing shows promise in transition towards agriculture based on data-driven decisions especially considering the novel Internet of Things (IoT) avenues.

A Reconstructed Global Daily Seamless SIF Product at 0.05 Degree Resolution Based on TROPOMI, MODIS and ERA5 Data

Satellite-derived solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been proven to be a valuable tool for monitoring vegetation’s photosynthetic activity at regional or global scales. However, the coarse spatiotemporal resolution or discrete space coverage of most satellite SIF datasets hinders their full potential for studying carbon cycle and ecological processes at finer scales. Although the recent TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) partially addresses this issue, the SIF still has drawbacks in spatial insufficiency and spatiotemporal discontinuities when gridded at high spatiotemporal resolutions (e.g., 0.05°, 1-day or 2-day) due to its nonuniform sampling sizes, swath gaps, and clouds contaminations. Here, we generated a new global SIF product with Seamless spatiotemporal coverage at Daily and 0.05° resolutions (SDSIF) during 2018–2020, using the random forest (RF) approach together with TROPOMI SIF, MODIS reflectance and meteorological datasets. We investigated how the model accuracy was affected by selection of explanatory variables and model constraints. Eventually, models were trained and applied for specific continents and months given the similar response of SIF to environmental variables within closer space and time. This strategy achieved better accuracy (R2 = 0.928, RMSE = 0.0597 mW/m2/nm/sr) than one universal model (R2 = 0.913, RMSE = 0.0653 mW/m2/nm/sr) for testing samples. The SDSIF product can well preserve the temporal and spatial characteristics in original TROPOMI SIF with high temporal correlations (mean R2 around 0.750) and low spatial residuals (less than ±0.081 mW/m2/nm/sr) between them two at most regions (80% of global pixels). Compared with the original SIF at five flux sites, SDSIF filled the temporal gaps and was better consistent with tower-based SIF at the daily scale (the mean R2 increased from 0.467 to 0.744. Consequently, it provided more reliable 4-day SIF averages than the original ones from sparse daily observations (e.g., the R2 at Daman site was raised from 0.614 to 0.837), which resulted in a better correlation with 4-day tower-based GPP. Additionally, the global coverage ratio and local spatial details had also been improved by the reconstructed seamless SIF. Our product has advantages in spatiotemporal continuities and details over the original TROPOMI SIF, which will benefit the application of satellite SIF for understanding carbon cycle and ecological processes at finer spatial and temporal scales.

Area-ratio Fraunhofer line depth (aFLD) method approach to estimate solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence in low spectral resolution spectra in a cool-temperate deciduous broadleaf forest

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) emissions were estimated by the "area-ratio Fraunhofer line depth (aFLD) method", a new retrieval methodology in spectra from a low spectral resolution (SR) spectroradiometer (MS-700: full width half maximum (FWHM) of 10 nm and spectral sampling interval of 3.3 nm), assisted with a scaling to reference SIF detected from high SR spectrum. The sparse pixels of a spectrum of low SR misses detecting the minimum of the O₂A absorption band around at 760 nm, which makes the SIF detection by conventional FLD methods lose accuracy considerably. To overcome this, the aFLD method uses the definite integral of spectra over a wide interval between 750 and 780 nm. The integration of the spectrum is insusceptible to the change in shape of the depression curve, leading to higher accuracy of the aFLD method. Daily SIF, calculated by the aFLD method using the spectra obtained with MS-700, was scaled to reference daily SIF calculated by the spectral fitting method using the spectra obtained from August to December 2019 with an ultrafine SR spectroradiometer (QE Pro, FWHM = 0.24 nm). As a result, SIF calculated from MS-700 spectra by aFLD method was strongly correlated with the reference SIF from QE Pro spectra (r² = 0.81) and was successfully scaled. Then, the scaled 11-year SIF from MS-700 at a deciduous broadleaf forest showed the correlation with GPP at multiple time steps: daily, monthly, and yearly, consistently during 2008-2018. The comparison of aFLD-derived SIF with the global Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) SIF data set (GOSIF) showed high correlation on monthly values during 2008-2017 (r² = 0.85). The combining approach of the aFLD method with a scaling to reference SIF successfully detected long-term canopy SIF emissions, which has great potential to provide essential information on ecosystem-level photosynthesis.

Generation of a Global Spatially Continuous TanSat Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Product by Considering the Impact of the Solar Radiation Intensity

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) provides a new and direct way of monitoring photosynthetic activity. However, current SIF products are limited by low spatial resolution or sparse sampling. In this paper, we present a data-driven method of generating a global, spatially continuous TanSat SIF product. Firstly, the key explanatory variables for modelling canopy SIF were investigated using in-situ and satellite observations. According to theoretical and experimental analysis, the solar radiation intensity was found to be a dominant driving environmental variable for the SIF yield at both the canopy and global scales; this has, however, been neglected in previous research. The cosine value of the solar zenith angle at noon (cos (SZA0)), a proxy for solar radiation intensity, was found to be a dominant abiotic factor for the SIF yield. Next, a Random Forest (RF) approach was employed for SIF prediction based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) visible-to-NIR reflectance data, the normalized difference vegetation (NDVI), cos (SZA0), and air temperature. The machine learning model performed well at predicting SIF, giving R2 values of 0.73, an RMSE of 0.30 mW m−2 nm−1 sr−1 and a bias of 0.22 mW m−2 nm−1 sr−1 for 2018. If cos (SZA0) was not included, the accuracy of the RF model decreased: the R2 value was then 0.65, the RMSE 0.34 mW m−2 nm−1 sr−1 and an bias of 0.26 mW m−2 nm−1 sr−1, further verifying the importance of cos (SZA0). Finally, the globally continuous TanSat SIF product was developed and compared to the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) SIF data. The results showed that the globally continuous TanSat SIF product agreed well with the TROPOMI SIF data, with an R2 value of 0.73. Thus, this paper presents an improved approach to modelling satellite SIF that has a better accuracy, and the study also generated a global, spatially continuous TanSat SIF product with a spatial resolution of 0.05°.

Integrating SIF and Clearness Index to Improve Maize GPP Estimation Using Continuous Tower-Based Observations

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been proven to be well correlated with vegetation photosynthesis. Although multiple studies have found that SIF demonstrates a strong correlation with gross primary production (GPP), SIF-based GPP estimation at different temporal scales has not been well explored. In this study, we aimed to investigate the quality of GPP estimates produced using the far-red SIF retrieved at 760 nm (SIF760) based on continuous tower-based observations of a maize field made during 2017 and 2018, and to explore the responses of GPP and SIF to different meteorological conditions, such as the amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the clearness index (CI, representing the weather condition), the air temperature (AT), and the vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Firstly, our results showed that the SIF760 tracked GPP well at both diurnal and seasonal scales, and that SIF760 was more linearly correlated to PAR than GPP was. Therefore, the SIF760-GPP relationship was clearly a hyperbolic relationship. For instantaneous observations made within a period of half an hour, the R2 value was 0.66 in 2017 and 2018. Based on daily mean observations, the R2 value was 0.82 and 0.76 in 2017 and 2018, respectively. and had an R2 value of 0.66 (2017) and 0.66 (2018) for instantaneous observations made within a period of half an hour and 0.82 (2017) and 0.76 (2018) for daily mean observations. Secondly, it was found that the SIF760-GPP relationship varied with the environmental conditions, with the CI being the dominant factor. At both diurnal and seasonal scales, the ratio of GPP to SIF760 decreased noticeably as the CI increased. Finally, the SIF760-based GPP models with and without the inclusion of CI were trained using 70% of daily observations from 2017 and 2018 and the models were validated using the remaining 30% of the dataset. For both linear and non-linear models, the inclusion of the CI greatly improved the SIF760-based GPP estimates based on daily mean observations: the value of R2 increased from 0.71 to 0.82 for the linear model and from 0.82 to 0.87 for the non-linear model. The validation results confirmed that the SIF760-based GPP estimation was improved greatly by including the CI, giving a higher R2 and a lower RMSE. These values improved from R2 = 0.66 and RMSE = 7.02 mw/m2/nm/sr to R2 = 0.76 and RMSE = 6.36 mw/m2/nm/sr for the linear model, and from R2 = 0.71 and RMSE = 4.76 mw/m2/nm/sr to R2 = 0.78 and RMSE = 3.50 mw/m2/nm/sr for the non-linear model. Therefore, our results demonstrated that SIF760 is a reliable proxy for GPP and that SIF760-based GPP estimation can be greatly improved by integrating the CI with SIF760. These findings will be useful in the remote sensing of vegetation GPP using satellite, airborne, and tower-based SIF data because the CI is usually an easily accessible meteorological variable.

The Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer (SIFIS) Onboard the First Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Inventory Satellite (TECIS-1): Specifications and Prospects

The global monitoring of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) using satellite-based observations provides a new way of monitoring the status of terrestrial vegetation photosynthesis on a global scale. Several global SIF products that make use of atmospheric satellite data have been successfully developed in recent decades. The Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Inventory Satellite (TECIS-1), the first Chinese terrestrial ecosystem carbon inventory satellite, which is due to be launched in 2021, will carry an imaging spectrometer specifically designed for SIF monitoring. Here, we use an extensive set of simulated data derived from the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission 5 (MODTRAN 5) and Soil Canopy Observation Photosynthesis and Energy (SCOPE) models to evaluate and optimize the specifications of the SIF Imaging Spectrometer (SIFIS) onboard TECIS for accurate SIF retrievals. The wide spectral range of 670-780 nm was recommended to obtain the SIF at both the red and far-red bands. The results illustrate that the combination of a spectral resolution (SR) of 0.1 nm and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 127 performs better than an SR of 0.3 nm and SNR of 322 or an SR of 0.5 nm and SNR of 472 nm. The resulting SIF retrievals have a root-mean-squared (RMS) diff* value of 0.15 mW m-2 sr-1 nm-1 at the far-red band and 0.43 mW m-2 sr-1 nm-1 at the red band. This compares with 0.20 and 0.26 mW m-2 sr-1 nm-1 at the far-red band and 0.62 and 1.30 mW m-2 sr-1 nm-1 at the red band for the other two configurations described above. Given an SR of 0.3 nm, the increase in the SNR can also improve the SIF retrieval at both bands. If the SNR is improved to 450, the RMS diff* will be 0.17 mW m-2 sr-1 nm-1 at the far-red band and 0.47 mW m-2 sr-1 nm-1 at the red band. Therefore, the SIFIS onboard TECIS-1 will provide another set of observations dedicated to monitoring SIF at the global scale, which will benefit investigations of terrestrial vegetation photosynthesis from space.

Advances in Quantitative Earth Remote Sensing: Past, Present and Future

A combination of multispectral visible, infra-red and microwave sensors on the constellation of international Earth-observing satellites are providing unprecedented observations for all Earth domains over multiple decades (i.e., atmosphere, land, oceans and polar regions). This Special Issue of Sensors is dedicated to papers that describe such advances in the field of Earth remote sensing and their applications to advance understanding of Earth’s planetary system and applying the resulting knowledge and information to meet the societal needs during recent decades. The papers accepted and published in this issue convey the exciting scientific and technical challenges and opportunities for remote sensing of all domains of Earth system, including terrestrial, aquatic and coastal ecosystems; bathymetry of coasts and islands; oceans and lakes; measurement of soil moisture and land surface temperature that affects both water resources and food production; and advances in use of sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) in measuring and monitoring the contribution of terrestrial vegetation in the cycling of carbon in Earth’s system. Measurements of SIF, for example, has had a profound impact on the field of terrestrial ecosystems research and modelling. The Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) instrument on the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCVR) satellite located at the Sun–Earth Lagrange Point One, about 1.5 million miles away from Earth, is providing unique observations of the Earth’s full sun-lit disk from pole-to-pole and minute-by-minute, which overcomes a major limitation in temporal coverage of Earth by other polar-orbiting Earth-observing satellites. Active and passive microwave remote sensing instruments allow all-weather measurements and monitoring of clouds, weather phenomena, land-surface temperature and soil moisture by overcoming the presence of clouds that affect measurements by visible and infrared sensors. The use of powerful in-space lasers is allowing scientists and engineers to measure and monitor rapidly changing ice sheets in polar regions and mountain glaciers. These sensors and their measurements that are deployed on major space-based observatories and small- and micro-satellites, and the scientific knowledge they provide, are enhancing our understanding of planet Earth and development of Earth system models that are used increasingly to project future conditions due to Earth’s rapidly changing environmental conditions. Such knowledge and information are benefiting people, businesses and governments worldwide.

Comparison of Bi-Hemispherical and Hemispherical-Conical Configurations for In Situ Measurements of Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence

During recent decades, solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has shown to be a good proxy for gross primary production (GPP), promoting the development of ground-based SIF observation systems and supporting a greater understanding of the relationship between SIF and GPP. However, it is unclear whether such SIF-oriented observation systems built from different materials and of different configurations are able to acquire consistent SIF signals from the same target. In this study, we used four different observation systems to measure the same targets together in order to investigate whether SIF from different systems is comparable. Integration time (IT), reflectance, and SIF retrieved from different systems with hemispherical-conical (hemi-con) and bi-hemispherical (bi-hemi) configurations were also evaluated. A newly built prism system (SIFprism, using prism to collect both solar and target radiation) has the shortest IT and highest signal to noise ratio (SNR). Reflectance collected from the different systems showed small differences, and the diurnal patterns of both red and far-red SIF derived from different systems showed a marginal difference when measuring the homogeneous vegetation canopy (grassland). However, when the target is heterogeneous, e.g., the Epipremnum aureum canopy, the values and diurnal pattern of far-red SIF derived from systems with a bi-hemi configuration were obviously different with those derived from the system with hemi-con configuration. These results demonstrate that different SIF systems are able to acquire consistent SIF for landscapes with a homogeneous canopy. However, SIF retrieved from bi-hemi and hemi-con configurations may be distinctive when the target is a heterogeneous (or discontinuous) canopy due to the different fields of view and viewing geometries. Our findings suggest that the bi-hemi configuration has an advantage to measure heterogeneous canopies due to the large field of view for upwelling sensors being representative for the footprint of the eddy covariance flux measurements.

A Spectral Fitting Algorithm to Retrieve the Fluorescence Spectrum from Canopy Radiance

Retrieval of Sun-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence (F) spectrum is one of the challenging perspectives for further advancing F studies towards a better characterization of vegetation structure and functioning. In this study, a simplified Spectral Fitting retrieval algorithm suitable for retrieving the F spectrum with a limited number of parameters is proposed (two parameters for F). The novel algorithm is developed and tested on a set of radiative transfer simulations obtained by coupling SCOPE and MODTRAN5 codes, considering different chlorophyll content, leaf area index and noise levels to produce a large variability in fluorescence and reflectance spectra. The retrieval accuracy is quantified based on several metrics derived from the F spectrum (i.e., red and far-red peaks, O2 bands and spectrally-integrated values). Further, the algorithm is employed to process experimental field spectroscopy measurements collected over different crops during a long-lasting field campaign. The reliability of the retrieval algorithm on experimental measurements is evaluated by cross-comparison with F values computed by an independent retrieval method (i.e., SFM at O2 bands). For the first time, the evolution of the F spectrum along the entire growing season for a forage crop is analyzed and three diverse F spectra are identified at different growing stages. The results show that red F is larger for young canopy; while red and far-red F have similar intensity in an intermediate stage; finally, far-red F is significantly larger for the rest of the season.
