Toward the Required Detection Limits for Volatile Organic Constituents in Marine Environments with Infrared Evanescent Field Chemical Sensors

Detection of Crude Oil in Subsea Environments Using Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Current methods for detecting pipeline oil leaks depend primarily on optical detection, which can be slow and have deployment limitations. An alternative non-optical approach for earlier and faster detection of oil leaks would enable a rapid response and reduce the environmental impact of oil leaks. Here, we demonstrate that organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) can be used as non-optical sensors for crude oil detection in subsea environments. OECTs are thin film electronic devices that can be used for sensing in a variety of environments, but they have not yet been tested for crude oil detection in subsea environments. We fabricated OECTs with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) as the channel and showed that coating the channel with a polystyrene film results in an OECT with a large and measurable response to oil. Oil that comes in contact with the device will adsorb onto the polystyrene film and increases the impedance at the electrolyte interface. We performed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements to quantify the impedance across the device and found an optimal thickness for the polystyrene coating for the detection of oil. Under optimal device characteristics, as little as 10 μg of oil adsorbed on the channel surface produced a statistically significant change in the source-drain current. The OECTs were operable in seawater for the detection of oil, and we demonstrated that the devices can be transferred to flexible substrates which can be easily implemented in vehicles, pipelines, or other surfaces. This work demonstrates a low-cost device for oil detection in subsea environments and provides a new application of OECT sensors for sensing.

Direct Measurement of Dissolved Gas Using a Tapered Single-Mode Silica Fiber

Dissolved gases in the aquatic environment are critical to understanding the population of aquatic organisms and the ocean. Currently, laser absorption techniques based on membrane separation technology have made great strides in dissolved gas detection. However, the prolonged water-gas separation time of permeable membranes remains a key obstacle to the efficiency of dissolved gas analysis. To mitigate these limitations, we demonstrated direct measurement of dissolved gas using the evanescent-wave absorption spectroscopy of a tapered silica micro-fiber. It enhanced the analysis efficiency of dissolved gases without water-gas separation or sample preparation. The feasibility of this sensor for direct measurement of dissolved gases was verified by taking the detection of dissolved ammonia as an example. With a sensing length of 5 mm and a consumption of ~50 µL, this sensor achieves a system response time of ~11 min and a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 0.015%. Possible strategies are discussed for further performance improvement in in-situ applications requiring fast and highly sensitive dissolved gas sensing.

Surface Functionalization with Polymer Membrane or SEIRA Interface to Improve the Sensitivity of Chalcogenide-Based Infrared Sensors Dedicated to the Detection of Organic Molecules

Priority substances likely to pollute water can be characterized by mid-infrared spectroscopy based on their specific absorption spectral signature. In this work, the detection of volatile aromatic molecules in the aqueous phase by evanescent-wave spectroscopy has been optimized to improve the detection efficiency of future in situ optical sensors based on chalcogenide waveguides. To this end, a hydrophobic polymer was deposited on the surface of a zinc selenide prism using drop and spin-coating methods. To ensure that the water absorption bands will be properly attenuated for the selenide waveguides, two polymers were selected and compared: polyisobutylene and ethylene/propylene copolymer coating. The system was tested with benzene, toluene, and ortho-, meta-, and para-xylenes at concentrations ranging from 10 ppb to 40 ppm, and the measured detection limit was determined to be equal to 250 ppb under these analytical conditions using ATR-FTIR. The polyisobutylene membrane is promising for pollutant detection in real waters due to the reproducibility of its deposition on selenide materials, the ease of regeneration, the short response time, and the low ppb detection limit, which could be achieved with the infrared photonic microsensor based on chalcogenide materials. To improve the sensitivity of future infrared microsensors, the use of metallic nanostructures on the surface of chalcogenide waveguides appears to be a relevant way, thanks to the plasmon resonance phenomena. Thus, in addition to preliminary surface-enhanced infrared absorption tests using these materials and a functionalization via a self-assembled monolayer of 4-nitrothiophenol, heterostructures combining gold nanoparticles/chalcogenide waveguides have been successfully fabricated with the aim of proposing a SEIRA microsensor device.

In situ detection of fruit spoilage based on volatile compounds using the mid-infrared fiber-optic evanescent wave spectroscopy

Volatile compounds such as ethanol released from fruit can be rapidly detected using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy based on a long-path gas cell. However, this method relies on a long optical path length and requires pumping fruit volatiles into the gas cell. This can lead to the volatile compounds being contaminated and not detectable in situ. Fiber optic evanescent wave spectroscopy (FOEW) is not influenced by the path length so can detect materials (solid, liquid and gas phase) rapidly in situ, using only a few millimeters of optical fiber. In the present study, a spiral silver halide FOEW sensor with a length of approximately 21 mm was used to replace a long-path gas cell to explore the feasibility of identifying volatile compounds released from grapes in situ. The absorption peaks of ethanol in the volatile compounds were clearly found in the FOEW spectra and their intensity gradually increased as the storage time of the grapes increased. PCA analysis of these spectra showed clear clustering at different storage times (1-3, 4-5 and 6-7 d), revealing that the concentration of the ethanol released from the grapes changed significantly with time. The qualitative model established by PLS-DA algorithm could accurately classify grape samples as "Fresh," "Slight spoilage," or "Severe spoilage". The accuracy of the calibration and validation sets both were 100.00%. These changes can therefore be used for rapidly identifying fruit deterioration. Compared with the method used in a previous study by the authors, this method avoids using a pumping process and can thus identify volatile compounds and hence monitor deterioration in situ and on-line by placing a very short optical fiber near the fruit.

Infrared Spectroscopy–Quo Vadis?

Given the exquisite capability of direct, non-destructive label-free sensing of molecular transitions, IR spectroscopy has become a ubiquitous and versatile analytical tool. IR application scenarios range from industrial manufacturing processes, surveillance tasks and environmental monitoring to elaborate evaluation of (bio)medical samples. Given recent developments in associated fields, IR spectroscopic devices increasingly evolve into reliable and robust tools for quality control purposes, for rapid analysis within at-line, in-line or on-line processes, and even for bed-side monitoring of patient health indicators. With the opportunity to guide light at or within dedicated optical structures, remote sensing as well as high-throughput sensing scenarios are being addressed by appropriate IR methodologies. In the present focused article, selected perspectives on future directions for IR spectroscopic tools and their applications are discussed. These visions are accompanied by a short introduction to the historic development, current trends, and emerging technological opportunities guiding the future path IR spectroscopy may take. Highlighted state-of-the art implementations along with novel concepts enhancing the performance of IR sensors are presented together with cutting-edge developments in related fields that drive IR spectroscopy forward in its role as a versatile analytical technology with a bright past and an even brighter future.

Aggregation-Induced Luminescence Based UiO-66: Highly Selective Fast-Response Styrene Detection

One of the main pollutants in indoor air is volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can cause great harm to human health. So the development of a VOC detection technology is of great significance. In this work, a tetraphenylethylene-functionalized UiO-66 based on aggregation-induced emission was successfully prepared. The UiO-66-TBPE structure exhibits the characteristic blue emission of TBPE ligands under UV excitation and can be used as a luminescence sensor for fast and efficient detection of VOCs. More importantly, UiO-66-TBPE has a high fluorescence sensing selectivity in p-xylene and styrene vapor. To further improve the practical performance, we combined UiO-66-TBPE with the polymer polyacrylate (PA) to obtain a flexible hybrid membrane with fast detection performance for styrene vapor within the 30 s. The deeper sensing mechanism of p-xylene and styrene inducing different fluorescence enhancement and fluorescence quenching is explained by a combination of modern characterization techniques and computer simulation. Finally, we applied UiO-66-TBPE/PA to leather and still maintained a good sensing performance. It provides a potential way for the application of fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to detect VOCs in daily life.

Infrared Spectroscopy in Aqueous Solutions: Capabilities and Challenges

Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy provides rapid, reliable, quantitative, and qualitative analysis of samples in different aggregation states, i.e., gases, thin films, solids, liquids, etc. However, when analyzing aqueous solutions, particular issues associated with the rather pronounced IR absorption characteristics of water appear to interfere with the solute determination. In this review, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic techniques and their analytical capabilities for analyzing aqueous solutions are reviewed, and highlight examples are discussed.

Toward Chalcogenide Platform Infrared Sensor Dedicated to the In Situ Detection of Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Natural Waters via an Attenuated Total Reflection Spectroscopy Study

The objective of this study is to demonstrate the successful functionalization of the surface of a chalcogenide infrared waveguide with the ultimate goal of developing an infrared micro-sensor device. First, a polyisobutylene coating was selected by testing its physico-chemical compatibility with a Ge-Sb-Se selenide surface. To simulate the chalcogenide platform infrared sensor, the detection of benzene, toluene, and ortho-, meta- and para-xylenes was efficaciously performed using a polyisobutylene layer spin-coated on 1 and 2.5 µm co-sputtered selenide films of Ge₂₈Sb₁₂Se₆₀ composition deposited on a zinc selenide prism used for attenuated total reflection spectroscopy. The thickness of the polymer coating was optimized by attenuated total reflection spectroscopy to achieve the highest possible attenuation of water absorption while maintaining the diffusion rate of the pollutant through the polymer film compatible with the targeted in situ analysis. Then, natural water, i.e., groundwater, wastewater, and seawater, was sampled for detection measurement by means of attenuated total reflection spectroscopy. This study is a valuable contribution concerning the functionalization by a hydrophobic polymer compatible with a chalcogenide optical sensor designed to operate in the mid-infrared spectral range to detect in situ organic molecules in natural water.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as a surrogate tool for the quantification of naphthenic acids in oil sands process water and groundwater

Naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs), defined herein as the polar organic compounds extracted from the acidified oil sands process water (OSPW) samples using dichloromethane, are becoming the research hotspot due to their presence in large amount in OSPW and along with other potentially NA-contaminated water streams from the mining site. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) method is commonly used to quantify NAFCs and assumes that the total NA concentration is measured as the sum of the responses for all carboxylic acid functional groups. In this study, the NAFCs in various OSPW and groundwater (GW) samples from an active oil sands mining site were analyzed using FTIR. All water samples were pretreated using either solid-phase extraction (SPE) or liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) methods before analysis. The results showed that SPE produced higher recoveries of NAFCs than LLE for most water samples under current experimental conditions. For the quantification of NAFCs, commercial Fluka NA mixture and a pre-calibrated OSPW extract were employed as the calibration standards. The NAFCs calibrated with Fluka NA mixture and OSPW extract had clear linear relationships. The concentrations of NAFCs obtained using OSPW extract standard curve were 2.5 times the NAFC concentrations obtained using the Fluka NA mixture standard curve. Additionally, good linear correlations were observed between the total NAs and O₂-O₆ NA species determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-TOFMS) and the NAFCs measured by FTIR. According to these correlations, the NA compositions in NAFCs were developed, and the relative abundances of O₂-O₆ NA species in NAFCs were similar for SPE and LLE pretreated samples. The findings of this study demonstrated that FTIR could be used as a promising tool to monitor total NA species and to estimate the NA profile in different environmental water samples.

Mid-IR sensing platform for trace analysis in aqueous solutions based on a germanium-on-silicon waveguide chip with a mesoporous silica coating for analyte enrichment

A novel platform based on evanescent wave sensing in the 6.5 to 7.5 µm wavelength range is presented with the example of toluene detection in an aqueous solution. The overall sensing platform consists of a germanium-on-silicon waveguide with a functionalized mesoporous silica cladding and integrated microlenses for alignment-tolerant back-side optical interfacing with a tunable laser spectrometer. Hydrophobic functionalization of the mesoporous cladding allows enrichment of apolar analyte molecules and prevents strong interaction of water with the evanescent wave. The sensing performance was evaluated for aqueous toluene standards resulting in a limit of detection of 7 ppm. Recorded adsorption/desorption profiles followed Freundlich adsorption isotherms with rapid equilibration and resulting sensor response times of a few seconds. This indicates that continuous monitoring of contaminants in water is possible. A significant increase in LOD can be expected by likely improvements to the spectrometer noise floor which, expressed as a relative standard deviation of 100% lines, is currently in the range of 10^-2A.U.

Comparative study of Er3+-doped Ga-Ge-Sb-S thin films fabricated by sputtering and pulsed laser deposition

Despite the renewed interest in rare earth-doped chalcogenide glasses lying mainly in mid-infrared applications, a few comprehensive studies so far have presented the photoluminescence of amorphous chalcogenide films from visible to mid-infrared. This work reports the fabrication of luminescent quaternary sulfide thin films using radio-frequency sputtering and pulsed laser deposition, and the characterization of their chemical composition, morphology, structure, refractive index and Er³⁺ photoluminescence. The study of Er^{3+ 4}I_13/2 level lifetimes enables developing suitable deposition parameters; the dependency of composition, structural and spectroscopic properties on deposition parameters provides a way to tailor the RE-doped thin film properties. The surface roughness is very low for both deposition methods, ensuring reasonable propagation optical losses. The effects of annealing on the sulfide films spectroscopy and lifetimes were assessed. PLD appears consistent composition-wise, and largely independent of the deposition conditions, but radiofrequency magnetron sputtering seems to be more versatile, as one may tailor the film properties through deposition parameters manipulation. The luminescence via rare earth-doped chalcogenide waveguiding micro-structures might find easy-to-use applications concerning telecommunications or on-chip optical sensors for which luminescent sources or amplifiers operating at different wavelengths are required.
