Lock-in Amplifier-Based Impedance Detection of Tissue Type Using a Monopolar Injection Needle

In-Loco Optical Spectroscopy through a Multiple Digital Lock-In on a Linear Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) Array

Accurate and reliable measurements of optical properties are crucial for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. However, external illumination fluctuations can often make these measurements challenging to obtain. This work proposes a new technique based on digital lock-in processing that enables the use of CCD spectrometers in optical spectroscopy applications, even in uncontrolled lighting conditions. This approach leverages digital lock-in processing, performed on each pixel of the spectrometer's CCD simultaneously, to mitigate the impact of external optical interferences. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by testing and recovering the spectrum of a yellow LED subjected to other light sources in outdoor conditions, corresponding to a Signal-to-Noise Ratio of -70.45 dB. Additionally, it was possible to demonstrate the method's applicability for the spectroscopic analysis of gold nanoparticles in outdoor conditions. These results suggest that the proposed technique can be helpful for a wide range of optical measurement techniques, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Research on Robotic Humanoid Venipuncture Method Based on Biomechanical Model

Automatic venipuncture robots are expected to replace manual venipuncture methods owing to their high control precision, steady operation, and measurable perception. However, the lack of perception of the venipuncture status in the human body leads to an increased risk and failure rate, which further restricts the development of such robots. To address this, we propose a humanoid venipuncture method guided by a biomechanical model to imitate human sensations and feedback. This method intends to perceive the venipuncture status and improve the performance of the venipuncture robot. First, this study establishes a biomechanical venipuncture model, which thoroughly considers the elastic deformation, cutting, and friction of tissues and can be applied to different venipuncture conditions. Then, venipuncture simulations and in vitro phantom experiments are performed under various settings to analyze and validate the model. Finally, to evaluate the robotic humanoid venipuncture method, we apply the method to a self-developed six-degree-of-freedom venipuncture robot via rabbit ear veins with a success rate of approximately 90%. This work demonstrates that the humanoid venipuncture method based on the biomechanical model is practical and rapid in processing simple information in venipuncture robots.

Biomedical Applications of Electromagnetic Detection: A Brief Review

This paper presents a review on the biomedical applications of electromagnetic detection in recent years. First of all, the thermal, non-thermal, and cumulative thermal effects of electromagnetic field on organism and their biological mechanisms are introduced. According to the electromagnetic biological theory, the main parameters affecting electromagnetic biological effects are frequency and intensity. This review subsequently makes a brief review about the related biomedical application of electromagnetic detection and biosensors using frequency as a clue, such as health monitoring, food preservation, and disease treatment. In addition, electromagnetic detection in combination with machine learning (ML) technology has been used in clinical diagnosis because of its powerful feature extraction capabilities. Therefore, the relevant research involving the application of ML technology to electromagnetic medical images are summarized. Finally, the future development to electromagnetic detection for biomedical applications are presented.

Real-Time Impedance Detection of Intra-Articular Space in a Porcine Model Using a Monopolar Injection Needle

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can be treated through specific drug injection into the intra-articular space. Several failures during drug injection attempts with conventional fluoroscopy and ultrasonography in a small area of the intra-articular space have been reported. In this work we present an innovative impedance measurement-based method/algorithm for needle tip positioning to enhance image-guided intra-articular vaccination treatment. A novel algorithm for detecting the intra-articular space in the elbow and knee joints of a live porcine model is reported. An impedance measurement system was developed for biological tissue measurement. The electrical impedance in the intra-articular space was monitored and the needle tip was examined by ultrasonography. The contrast dye was vaccinated and checked using fluoroscopy to confirm that the dye was properly inoculated in the cavity. The electrical impedance was estimated for various needle inclusion profundity levels in saline solution, which were broadly used to evaluate the proposed device for in vivo examinations. Good efficiency was observed in the impedance-based measurements using a monopolar injection needle for intra-articular therapy. To enhance the needle tip positioning for intra-articular therapy, the intended impedance measurement device with a monopolar injection needle can be used as a complement to existing modalities.
