Abstract
The proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices has led to a surge in Internet traffic characterized by variabilities in Quality of Service (QoS) demands. Managing these devices and traffic effectively proves challenging, particularly within conventional IoT network architectures lacking centralized management. However, the advent of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) presents intriguing opportunities for network management, capable of addressing challenges in traditional IoT architectures. SDN's ability to provide centralized network management through a programmable controller, separate from data forwarding elements, has led researchers to incorporate SDN features with IoT (SDIoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (SDWSN) ecosystems. However, despite the SDN support, these networks encounter challenges related to load-imbalance routing issues, as the SDN controller may be constrained while certain access points serving end users become overloaded. In response to these challenges, various load-balancing routing solutions have been proposed, each with distinct objectives. However, a comprehensive study that classifies and analyzes these solutions based on their weaknesses and postmortem challenges is currently lacking. This paper fills this gap by providing an in-depth classification of existing solutions. The study categorizes the problems addressed by different schemes and summarizes their findings. Furthermore, it discusses the shortcomings of current studies, and postmortem challenges associated with integrating SDN with IoT, and suggests future research directions.

Abstract
High thermal conductivity and a high breakdown field make diamond a promising candidate for high-power and high-temperature semiconductor devices. Diamond also has a higher radiation hardness than silicon. Recent studies show that diamond has exceptionally large electron and hole momentum relaxation times, facilitating compact THz and sub-THz plasmonic sources and detectors working at room temperature and elevated temperatures. The plasmonic resonance quality factor in diamond TeraFETs could be larger than unity for the 240-600 GHz atmospheric window, which could make them viable for 6G communications applications. This paper reviews the potential and challenges of diamond technology, showing that diamond might augment silicon for high-power and high-frequency compact devices with special advantages for extreme environments and high-frequency applications.

Abstract
Internet of things (IoT)-enabled wireless body area network (WBAN) is an emerging technology that combines medical devices, wireless devices, and non-medical devices for healthcare management applications. Speech emotion recognition (SER) is an active research field in the healthcare domain and machine learning. It is a technique that can be used to automatically identify speakers' emotions from their speech. However, the SER system, especially in the healthcare domain, is confronted with a few challenges. For example, low prediction accuracy, high computational complexity, delay in real-time prediction, and how to identify appropriate features from speech. Motivated by these research gaps, we proposed an emotion-aware IoT-enabled WBAN system within the healthcare framework where data processing and long-range data transmissions are performed by an edge AI system for real-time prediction of patients' speech emotions as well as to capture the changes in emotions before and after treatment. Additionally, we investigated the effectiveness of different machine learning and deep learning algorithms in terms of performance classification, feature extraction methods, and normalization methods. We developed a hybrid deep learning model, i.e., convolutional neural network (CNN) and bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM), and a regularized CNN model. We combined the models with different optimization strategies and regularization techniques to improve the prediction accuracy, reduce generalization error, and reduce the computational complexity of the neural networks in terms of their computational time, power, and space. Different experiments were performed to check the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed machine learning and deep learning algorithms. The proposed models are compared with a related existing model for evaluation and validation using standard performance metrics such as prediction accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, confusion matrix, and the differences between the actual and predicted values. The experimental results proved that one of the proposed models outperformed the existing model with an accuracy of about 98%.

Abstract
Developing innovative systems and operations to monitor forests and send alerts in dangerous situations, such as fires, has become, over the years, a necessary task to protect forests. In this work, a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is employed for forest data acquisition to identify abrupt anomalies when a fire ignition starts. Even though a low-power LoRaWAN network is used, each module still needs to save power as much as possible to avoid periodic maintenance since a current consumption peak happens while sending messages. Moreover, considering the LoRaWAN characteristics, each module should use the bandwidth only when essential. Therefore, four algorithms were tested and calibrated along real and monitored events of a wildfire. The first algorithm is based on the Exponential Smoothing method, Moving Averages techniques are used to define the other two algorithms, and the fourth uses the Least Mean Square. When properly combined, the algorithms can perform a pre-filtering data acquisition before each module uses the LoRaWAN network and, consequently, save energy if there is no necessity to send data. After the validations, using Wildfire Simulation Events (WSE), the developed filter achieves an accuracy rate of 0.73 with 0.5 possible false alerts. These rates do not represent a final warning to firefighters, and a possible improvement can be achieved through cloud-based server algorithms. By comparing the current consumption before and after the proposed implementation, the modules can save almost 53% of their batteries when is no demand to send data. At the same time, the modules can maintain the server informed with a minimum interval of 15 min and recognize abrupt changes in 60 s when fire ignition appears.

Abstract
The rapid development of technology has brought about a revolution in healthcare stimulating a wide range of smart and autonomous applications in homes, clinics, surgeries and hospitals. Smart healthcare opens the opportunity for a qualitative advance in the relations between healthcare providers and end-users for the provision of healthcare such as enabling doctors to diagnose remotely while optimizing the accuracy of the diagnosis and maximizing the benefits of treatment by enabling close patient monitoring. This paper presents a comprehensive review of non-invasive vital data acquisition and the Internet of Things in healthcare informatics and thus reports the challenges in healthcare informatics and suggests future work that would lead to solutions to address the open challenges in IoT and non-invasive vital data acquisition. In particular, the conducted review has revealed that there has been a daunting challenge in the development of multi-frequency vital IoT systems, and addressing this issue will help enable the vital IoT node to be reachable by the broker in multiple area ranges. Furthermore, the utilization of multi-camera systems has proven its high potential to increase the accuracy of vital data acquisition, but the implementation of such systems has not been fully developed with unfilled gaps to be bridged. Moreover, the application of deep learning to the real-time analysis of vital data on the node/edge side will enable optimal, instant offline decision making. Finally, the synergistic integration of reliable power management and energy harvesting systems into non-invasive data acquisition has been omitted so far, and the successful implementation of such systems will lead to a smart, robust, sustainable and self-powered healthcare system.

Abstract
A Microgrid (MG), like any other smart and interoperable power system, requires device-to-device (D2D) communication structures in order to function effectively. This communication system, however, is not immune to intentional or unintentional failures. This paper discusses the effects of communication link failures on MG control and management and proposes solutions based on enhancing message content to mitigate their detritus impact. In order to achieve this goal, generation and consumption forecasting using deep learning (DL) methods at the next time steps is used. The architecture of an energy management system (EMS) and an energy storage system (ESS) that are able to operate in coordination is introduced and evaluated by simulation tests, which show promising results and illustrate the efficacy of the proposed methods. It is important to mention that, in this paper, three dissimilar topics namely MG control/management, DL-based forecasting, and D2D communication architectures are employed and this combination is proven to be capable of achieving the aforesaid objective.

Abstract
In this paper we present the optimal design of wearable four band antenna that is suitable to work in the fifth-generation wireless systems as well as in cellular systems and in unlicensed bands. The design of the antenna relies on a careful study of optimization algorithms that are suitable for antenna design. We have proposed a benchmark problem to compare different optimization algorithms. It is the space of voltage standing wave ratio and the gain of dipole antenna that was identified for wide range of dipole length and radius. Using this pre-calculated data, we have tuned the parameters of optimization routine for optimal performance with our benchmark. After this, we optimized the geometry of four-band wearable antenna. In the optimization process, we used finite-difference time-domain method together with simplified model of human body. The antenna design was assessed with a fabricated prototype.

Abstract
The development of the Internet of Things (IoT) in electronics, computer, robotics, and internet technology is inevitable and has rapidly accelerated more than before as the IoT paradigm is a promising solution in terms of solving real world problems, especially for digitizing and monitoring in real time. Various IoT schemes have successfully been applied to some areas such as smart health and smart agriculture. Since the agriculture areas are getting narrow, the development of IoT in agriculture should be prioritized to enhance crop production. This paper proposes the IoT scheme for long range communication based on Long Range (LoRa) modules applied to smart agriculture. The scheme utilizes the low power modules and long-distance communication for monitoring temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and pH soil. Our IoT design has successfully been applied to agriculture areas which have unstable network connections. The design is analyzed to obtain the maximum coverage using different spreading factors and bandwidths. We show that as the spreading factor increases to 12, the maximum coverage can be transmitted to 1000 m. However, the large coverage also comes with the disadvantages of the increased delays.

Abstract
Interest and need for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) have significantly increased recently. WBAN consists of miniaturized sensors designed to collect and transmit data through wireless network, enabling medical specialists to monitor patients during their normal daily life and providing real time opinions for medical diagnosis. Many wireless technologies have proved themselves in WBAN applications, while others are still under investigations. The choice of the technology to adopt may depend on the disease to monitor and the performance requirements, i.e. reliability, latency and data rate. In addition, the suitable sensor is essential when seeking to extract the data related to a medical measure. This paper aims at surveying the wireless technologies used in WBAN systems. In addition to a detailed survey on the existing technologies, the use of the emerging Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies, and the future 5G, B5G and 6G is investigated, where the suitability of these technologies to WBAN applications is studied from several perspectives. Furthermore, medical applications of WBAN are discussed by presenting their methodologies, the adopted wireless technologies and the used sensors. Given that each medical application requires the appropriate sensor to extract the data, we highlight a wide range of the sensors used in the market for medical systems. Recent and future challenges in WBAN systems are given related to the power consumption, the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in WBAN and others.

A Survey on Adaptive Data Rate Optimization in LoRaWAN: Recent Solutions and Major Challenges. SENSORS 2020; 20:s20185044. [PMID: 32899454 PMCID: PMC7571005 DOI: 10.3390/s20185044] [Citation(s) in RCA: 51] [Impact Index Per Article: 12.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/18/2020] [Revised: 08/22/2020] [Accepted: 08/26/2020] [Indexed: 11/29/2022]
Abstract
Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) is a fast-growing communication system for Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) in the Internet of Things (IoTs) deployments. LoRaWAN is built to optimize LPWANs for battery lifetime, capacity, range, and cost. LoRaWAN employs an Adaptive Data Rate (ADR) scheme that dynamically optimizes data rate, airtime, and energy consumption. The major challenge in LoRaWAN is that the LoRa specification does not state how the network server must command end nodes pertaining rate adaptation. As a result, numerous ADR schemes have been proposed to cater for the many applications of IoT technology, the quality of service requirements, different metrics, and radio frequency (RF) conditions. This offers a challenge for the reliability and suitability of these schemes. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the research on ADR algorithms for LoRaWAN technology. First, we provide an overview of LoRaWAN network performance that has been explored and documented in the literature and then focus on recent solutions for ADR as an optimization approach to improve throughput, energy efficiency and scalability. We then distinguish the approaches used, highlight their strengths and drawbacks, and provide a comparison of these approaches. Finally, we identify some research gaps and future directions.
