Proteinoids-Polyaniline Interaction with Stimulated Neurons on Living and Plastic Surfaces

The integration of proteinoid-polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers with neuromorphic architectures shows potential for developing computer systems that are adaptable, energy-efficient, and have the capacity of tolerating faults. This work examines the capacity of proteinoid-PANI nanofibers to imitate different spiking patterns in stimulated Izhikevich neurons. The proteinoid-PANI nanofibers exhibit diverse spiking behaviors on different substrates, showcasing a broad range of control and programmability, as confirmed by experimental characterization and computational modeling. K-means clustering technique measures the extent and selectivity of the proteinoid-PANI spiking behavior in response to various stimuli and spiking patterns. The presence of strong positive correlations between membrane potential and time suggests that the system is capable of producing reliable and consistent electrical activity patterns. Proteinoid-PANI samples demonstrate enhanced stability and consistency in numerous spiking modes when compared to simulated input neurons. The results emphasize the capability of proteinoid-PANI nanofibers as a bioinspired substance for neuromorphic computing and open up possibilities for their incorporation into neuromorphic structures and bioinspired computer models.

Enhancing Sensitivity in Gas Detection: Porous Structures in Organic Field-Effect Transistor-Based Sensors

Gas detection is crucial for detecting environmentally harmful gases. Organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based gas sensors have attracted attention due to their promising performance and potential for integration into flexible and wearable devices. This review examines the operating mechanisms of OFET-based gas sensors and explores methods for improving sensitivity, with a focus on porous structures. Researchers have achieved significant enhancements in sensor performance by controlling the thickness and free volume of the organic semiconductor layer. Additionally, innovative fabrication techniques like self-assembly and etching have been used to create porous structures, facilitating the diffusion of target gas molecules, and improving sensor response and recovery. These advancements in porous structure fabrication suggest a promising future for OFET-based gas sensors, offering increased sensitivity and selectivity across various applications.

Metal-organic frameworks for advanced transducer based gas sensors: review and perspectives

The development of gas sensing devices to detect environmentally toxic, hazardous, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has witnessed a surge of immense interest over the past few decades, motivated mainly by the significant progress in technological advancements in the gas sensing field. A great deal of research has been dedicated to developing robust, cost-effective, and miniaturized gas sensing platforms with high efficiency. Compared to conventional metal-oxide based gas sensing materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered tremendous attention in a variety of fields, including the gas sensing field, due to their fascinating features such as high adsorption sites for gas molecules, high porosity, tunable morphologies, structural diversities, and ability of room temperature (RT) sensing. This review summarizes the current advancement in various pristine MOF materials and their composites for different electrical transducer-based gas sensing applications. The review begins with a discussion on the overview of gas sensors, the significance of MOFs, and their scope in the gas sensing field. Next, gas sensing applications are divided into four categories based on different advanced transducers: chemiresistive, capacitive, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and organic field-effect transistor (OFET) based gas sensors. Their fundamental concepts, gas sensing ability towards various gases, sensing mechanisms, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Finally, this review is concluded with a summary, existing challenges, and future perspectives.

Electronic Sensing Platform (ESP) Based on Open-Gate Junction Field-Effect Transistor (OG-JFET) for Life Science Applications: Design, Modeling and Experimental Results

This paper presents a new field-effect sensor called open-gate junction gate field-effect transistor (OG-JFET) for biosensing applications. The OG-JFET consists of a p-type channel on top of an n-type layer in which the p-type serves as the sensing conductive layer between two ohmic contacted sources and drain electrodes. The structure is novel as it is based on a junction field-effect transistor with a subtle difference in that the top gate (n-type contact) has been removed to open the space for introducing the biomaterial and solution. The channel can be controlled through a back gate, enabling the sensor's operation without a bulky electrode inside the solution. In this research, in order to demonstrate the sensor's functionality for chemical and biosensing, we tested OG-JFET with varying pH solutions, cell adhesion (human oral neutrophils), human exhalation, and DNA molecules. Moreover, the sensor was simulated with COMSOL Multiphysics to gain insight into the sensor operation and its ion-sensitive capability. The complete simulation procedures and the physics of pH modeling is presented here, being numerically solved in COMSOL Multiphysics software. The outcome of the current study puts forward OG-JFET as a new platform for biosensing applications.
