Evolution of Sensor Research for Clarifying the Dynamics and Properties of Future Directions

The principal goal of this study is to analyze the evolution of sensor research and technologies from 1990 to 2020 to clarify outlook and future directions. This paper applies network analysis to a large dataset of publications concerning sensor research covering a 30-year period. Results show that the evolution of sensors is based on growing scientific interactions within networks, between different research fields that generate co-evolutionary pathways directed to develop general-purpose and/or specialized technologies, such as wireless sensors, biosensors, fiber-optic, and optical sensors, having manifold applications in industries. These results show new directions of sensor research that can drive R&D investments toward promising technological trajectories of sensors, exhibiting a high potential of growth to support scientific, technological, industrial, and socioeconomic development.

Probabilistic Framework Allocation on Underwater Vehicular Systems Using Hydrophone Sensor Networks

This article emphasis the importance of constructing an underwater vehicle monitoring system to solve various issues that are related to deep sea explorations. For solving the issues, conventional methods are not implemented, whereas a new underwater vehicle is introduced which acts as a sensing device and monitors the ambient noise in the system. However, the fundamentals of creating underwater vehicles have been considered from conventional systems and the new formulations are generated. This innovative sensing device will function based on the energy produced by the solar cells which will operate for a short period of time under the water where low parametric units are installed. In addition, the energy consumed for operating a particular unit is much lesser and this results in achieving high reliability using a probabilistic path finding algorithm. Further, two different application segments have been solved using the proposed formulations including the depth of monitoring the ocean. To validate the efficiency of the proposed method, comparisons have been made with existing methods in terms of navigation output units, rate of decomposition for solar cells, reliability rate, and directivity where the proposed method proves to be more efficient for an average percentile of 64%.

Application of NSGA-II to Obtain the Charging Current-Time Tradeoff Curve in Battery Based Underwater Wireless Sensor Nodes

In this paper, a novel application of the Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II) is presented for obtaining the charging current–time tradeoff curve in battery based underwater wireless sensor nodes. The selection of the optimal charging current and times is a common optimization problem. A high charging current ensures a fast charging time. However, it increases the maximum power consumption and also the cost and complexity of the power supply sources. This research studies the tradeoff curve between charging currents and times in detail. The design exploration methodology is based on a two nested loop search strategy. The external loop determines the optimal design solutions which fulfill the designers’ requirements using parameters like the sensor node measurement period, power consumption, and battery voltages. The inner loop executes a local search within working ranges using an evolutionary multi-objective strategy. The experiments proposed are used to obtain the charging current–time tradeoff curve and to exhibit the accuracy of the optimal design solutions. The exploration methodology presented is compared with a bisection search strategy. From the results, it can be concluded that our approach is at least four times better in terms of computational effort than a bisection search strategy. In terms of power consumption, the presented methodology reduced the required power at least 3.3 dB in worst case scenarios tested.

A Survey on the Application of WirelessHART for Industrial Process Monitoring and Control

Industrialization has led to a huge demand for a network control system to monitor and control multi-loop processes with high effectiveness. Due to these advancements, new industrial wireless sensor network (IWSN) standards such as ZigBee, WirelessHART, ISA 100.11a wireless, and Wireless network for Industrial Automation-Process Automation (WIA-PA) have begun to emerge based on their wired conventional structure with additional developments. This advancement improved flexibility, scalability, needed fewer cables, reduced the network installation and commissioning time, increased productivity, and reduced maintenance costs compared to wired networks. On the other hand, using IWSNs for process control comes with the critical challenge of handling stochastic network delays, packet drop, and external noises which are capable of degrading the controller performance. Thus, this paper presents a detailed study focusing only on the adoption of WirelessHART in simulations and real-time applications for industrial process monitoring and control with its crucial challenges and design requirements.

Deployment Strategies of Soil Monitoring WSN for Precision Agriculture Irrigation Scheduling in Rural Areas

Deploying wireless sensor networks (WSN) in rural environments such as agricultural fields may present some challenges that affect the communication between the nodes due to the vegetation. These challenges must be addressed when implementing precision agriculture (PA) systems that monitor the fields and estimate irrigation requirements with the gathered data. In this paper, different WSN deployment configurations for a soil monitoring PA system are studied to identify the effects of the rural environment on the signal and to identify the key aspects to consider when designing a PA wireless network. The PA system is described, providing the architecture, the node design, and the algorithm that determines the irrigation requirements. The testbed includes different types of vegetation and on-ground, near-ground, and above-ground ESP32 Wi-Fi node placements. The results of the testbed show high variability in densely vegetated areas. These results are analyzed to determine the theoretical maximum coverage for acceptable signal quality for each of the studied configurations. The best coverage was obtained for the near-ground deployment. Lastly, the aspects of the rural environment and the deployment that affect the signal such as node height, crop type, foliage density, or the form of irrigation are discussed.
