Design and Implementation of a Position, Speed and Orientation Fuzzy Controller Using a Motion Capture System to Operate a Wheelchair Prototype

Design and Evaluation of the Extended FBS Model Based Gaze-Control Power Wheelchair for Individuals Facing Manual Control Challenges

This study addresses the challenges faced by individuals with upper limb disadvantages in operating power wheelchair joysticks by utilizing the extended Function-Behavior-Structure (FBS) model to identify design requirements for an alternative wheelchair control system. A gaze-controlled wheelchair system is proposed based on design requirements from the extended FBS model and prioritized using the MosCow method. This innovative system relies on the user's natural gaze and comprises three levels: perception, decision making, and execution. The perception layer senses and acquires information from the environment, including user eye movements and driving context. The decision-making layer processes this information to determine the user's intended direction, while the execution layer controls the wheelchair's movement accordingly. The system's effectiveness was validated through indoor field testing, with an average driving drift of less than 20 cm for participates. Additionally, the user experience scale revealed overall positive user experiences and perceptions of the system's usability, ease of use, and satisfaction.

A Kinematic Information Acquisition Model That Uses Digital Signals from an Inertial and Magnetic Motion Capture System

This paper presents a model that enables the transformation of digital signals generated by an inertial and magnetic motion capture system into kinematic information. First, the operation and data generated by the used inertial and magnetic system are described. Subsequently, the five stages of the proposed model are described, concluding with its implementation in a virtual environment to display the kinematic information. Finally, the applied tests are presented to evaluate the performance of the model through the execution of four exercises on the upper limb: flexion and extension of the elbow, and pronation and supination of the forearm. The results show a mean squared error of 3.82° in elbow flexion-extension movements and 3.46° in forearm pronation-supination movements. The results were obtained by comparing the inertial and magnetic system versus an optical motion capture system, allowing for the identification of the usability and functionality of the proposed model.

Wheelchair prototype controlled by position, speed and orientation using head movement

A prototype that simulates a wheelchair was built using electronic commercial devices and software implementation with the aim to operate the prototype using head movement and analyzing the system response. The controllers were simulated using MATLAB® toolbox and Python™ libraries. The mean time response of the system with manual control was 37,8 s. The mean orientation control response with constant speed was 36,5 s and the mean orientation control response with variable speed was 44,2 s in a specific route. The variable speed response is slower than constant speed due to head motion error. The system was rated such as" very good" by 10 participants using a System Usability Scale (SUS).

Design and Optimization of a Neuro-Fuzzy System for the Control of an Electromechanical Plant

One characteristic of neuro-fuzzy systems is the possibility of incorporating preliminary information in their structure as well as being able to establish an initial configuration to carry out the training. In this regard, the strategy to establish the configuration of the fuzzy system is a relevant aspect. This document displays the design and implementation of a neuro-fuzzy controller based on Boolean relations to regulate the angular position in an electromechanical plant, composed by a motor coupled to inertia with friction (a widely studied plant that serves to show the control system design process). The structure of fuzzy systems based on Boolean relations considers the operation of sensors and actuators present in the control system. In this way, the initial configuration of fuzzy controller can be determined. In order to perform the optimization of the neuro-fuzzy controller, the continuous plant model is converted to discrete time to be included in the closed-loop controller training equations. For the design process, first the optimization of a Proportional Integral (PI) linear controller is carried out. Thus, linear controller parameters are employed to establish the structure and initial configuration of the neuro-fuzzy controller. The optimization process also includes weighting factors for error and control action in such a way that allows having different system responses. Considering the structure of the control system, the optimization algorithm (training algorithm) employed is dynamic back propagation. The results via simulations show that optimization is achieved in the linear and neuro-fuzzy controllers using different weighting values for the error signal and control action. It is also observed that the proposed control strategy allows disturbance rejection.

Using Inertial Sensors to Determine Head Motion-A Review

Human activity recognition and classification are some of the most interesting research fields, especially due to the rising popularity of wearable devices, such as mobile phones and smartwatches, which are present in our daily lives. Determining head motion and activities through wearable devices has applications in different domains, such as medicine, entertainment, health monitoring, and sports training. In addition, understanding head motion is important for modern-day topics, such as metaverse systems, virtual reality, and touchless systems. The wearability and usability of head motion systems are more technologically advanced than those which use information from a sensor connected to other parts of the human body. The current paper presents an overview of the technical literature from the last decade on state-of-the-art head motion monitoring systems based on inertial sensors. This study provides an overview of the existing solutions used to monitor head motion using inertial sensors. The focus of this study was on determining the acquisition methods, prototype structures, preprocessing steps, computational methods, and techniques used to validate these systems. From a preliminary inspection of the technical literature, we observed that this was the first work which looks specifically at head motion systems based on inertial sensors and their techniques. The research was conducted using four internet databases-IEEE Xplore, Elsevier, MDPI, and Springer. According to this survey, most of the studies focused on analyzing general human activity, and less on a specific activity. In addition, this paper provides a thorough overview of the last decade of approaches and machine learning algorithms used to monitor head motion using inertial sensors. For each method, concept, and final solution, this study provides a comprehensive number of references which help prove the advantages and disadvantages of the inertial sensors used to read head motion. The results of this study help to contextualize emerging inertial sensor technology in relation to broader goals to help people suffering from partial or total paralysis of the body.
