Printable electronics for neurotechnology is a rapidly emerging field that leverages various printing techniques to fabricate electronic devices, offering advantages in rapid prototyping, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. These devices have promising applications in neurobiology, enabling the recording of neuronal signals and controlled drug delivery. This review provides an overview of printing techniques, materials used in neural device fabrication, and their applications. The printing techniques discussed include inkjet, screen printing, flexographic printing, 3D printing, and more. Each method has its unique advantages and challenges, ranging from precise printing and high resolution to material compatibility and scalability. Selecting the right materials for printable devices is crucial, considering factors like biocompatibility, flexibility, electrical properties, and durability. Conductive materials such as metallic nanoparticles and conducting polymers are commonly used in neurotechnology. Dielectric materials, like polyimide and polycaprolactone, play a vital role in device fabrication. Applications of printable devices in neurotechnology encompass various neuroprobes, electrocorticography arrays, and microelectrode arrays. Decrease in phase slip rates and phase cone structures during seizure evolution and epileptogenic activities derived from microgrid ECoG data

Sudden phase changes are related to cortical phase transitions, which likely change in frequency and spatial distribution as epileptogenic activity evolves. A 100 s long section of micro-ECoG data obtained before and during a seizure was selected and analyzed. In addition, nine other short-duration epileptic events were also examined. The data was collected at 420 Hz, imported into MATLAB, downsampled to 200 Hz, and filtered in the 1-50 Hz band. The Hilbert transform was applied to compute the analytic phase, which was then unwrapped, and detrended to look for sudden phase changes. The phase slip rate (counts/s) and its acceleration (counts/s2) were computed with a stepping window of 1-s duration and with a step size of 5 ms. The analysis was performed for theta (3-7 Hz), alpha (7-12 Hz), and beta (12-30 Hz) bands. The phase slip rate on all electrodes in the theta band decreased while it increased for the alpha and beta bands during the seizure period. Similar patterns were observed for isolated epileptogenic events. Spatiotemporal contour plots of the phase slip rates were also constructed using a montage layout of 8 × 8 electrode positions. These plots exhibited dynamic and oscillatory formation of phase cone-like structures which were higher in the theta band and lower in the alpha and beta bands during the seizure period and epileptogenic events. These results indicate that the formation of phase cones might be an excellent biomarker to study the evolution of a seizure and also the cortical dynamics of isolated epileptogenic events.

Implantable Flexible Sensors for Health Monitoring

Flexible sensors, as a significant component of flexible electronics, have attracted great interest the realms of human-computer interaction and health monitoring due to their high conformability, adjustable sensitivity, and excellent durability. In comparison to wearable sensor-based in vitro health monitoring, the use of implantable flexible sensors (IFSs) for in vivo health monitoring offers more accurate and reliable vital sign information due to their ability to adapt and directly integrate with human tissue. IFSs show tremendous promise in the field of health monitoring, with unique advantages such as robust signal reading capabilities, lightweight design, flexibility, and biocompatibility. Herein, a review of IFSs for vital signs monitoring is detailly provided, highlighting the essential conditions for in vivo applications. As the prerequisites of IFSs, the stretchability and wireless self-powered properties of the sensor are discussed, with a special attention paid to the sensing materials which can maintain prominent biosafety (i.e., biocompatibility, biodegradability, bioresorbability). Furthermore, the applications of IFSs monitoring various parts of the body are described in detail, with a summary in brain monitoring, eye monitoring, and blood monitoring. Finally, the challenges as well as opportunities in the development of next-generation IFSs are presented.
