Bioethanol Production from Date Seed Cellulosic Fraction Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Hydrothermal synthesis of modified lignin-based carbon dots derived from biomass waste for fluorescence determination of valsartan

Recently, carbon dots (CDs) have been extensively investigated as potential tools for numerous applications. Modified lignin-based CDs have been synthesized and used in the field of drug detection. They were found to be highly selective and sensitive to valsartan (VAL). Using a simple hydrothermal method, phosphorus and chlorine co-doped CDs were synthesized using lignin extracted from date seeds. The fluorescence properties of the synthesized CDs are influenced by several factors, which were investigated in detail. The optimal synthesis conditions were 1.50 g of lignin, 18 mL of 2 M NaOH, 1 mM H3PO4, 3 mM HCl and the mixture was heated at 220 °C for 16 hours. The synthesized lignin-based CDs have excellent FL properties and are well soluble in water with reasonable stability. Characterization of the prepared CDs revealed that they have various functional groups with a graphene oxide-like structure. The developed CDs show a good quantum yield of 37.7%. The FL of the CDs is quenched by VAL at λ em 313 nm after λ ex at 275 nm by a combination of static and dynamic quenching mechanisms. The response of VAL was linear in the range of 4.0-100.0 μg mL-1. The detection and quantification limits of VAL were 1.23 and 3.71 μg mL-1, respectively. The nanoprobe was successfully used to analyze VAL in drug samples and provided satisfactory results.

Date seed waste derived nanocatalyst and its application in production of hydrolytic enzyme, fermentative sugars and biohydrogen

Biofuel production from cellulosic biomass is a promising approach; however, the cost-intensive utilization of cellulolytic enzymes is a major roadblock to economic production. This study reports the preparation of a nanocatalyst using date seed and evaluates the impact of nanocatalysts on cellulolytic enzyme production using solid-state fermentation of date pulp waste through bacterial co-cultivation. Under optimized conditions, 30 IU/gds filter paper activity is produced in the presence of 2 mg of nanocatalyst. Cellulase showed thermal stability at 50 °C and pH 7 up to 10 h in the presence of nanocatalyst, and it produced 32.31 g/L glucose through the hydrolysis of acidic-pretreated date seeds in 24 h. Subsequently, 1788 mL/L of cumulative H2 in 24 h through cocultured dark fermentation could be produced. The approach presented in this study can be effective for multiple value additions, including nanocatalyst preparation, cellulase enzyme, and biohydrogen production.

Modelling of fermentative bioethanol production from indigenous Ulva prolifera biomass by Saccharomyces cerevisiae NFCCI1248 using an integrated ANN-GA approach

Third generation biomass (marine macroalgae) has been projected as a promising alternative energy resource for bioethanol production due to its high carbon and no lignin composition. However, the major challenge in the technologies of production lies in the fermentative bioconversion process. Therefore, in the present study the predictive ability of an integrated artificial neural network with genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) in the modelling of bioethanol production was investigated for an indigenous marine macroalgal biomass (Ulva prolifera) by a novel yeast strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae NFCCI1248 using six fermentative parameters, viz., substrate concentration, fermentation time, inoculum size, temperature, agitation speed and pH. The experimental model was developed using one-variable-at-a-time (OVAT) method to analyze the effects of the fermentative parameters on bioethanol production and the obtained regression equation was used as a fitness function for the ANN-GA modelling. The ANN-GA model predicted a maximum bioethanol production at 30 g/L substrate, 48 h fermentation time, 10% (v/v) inoculum, 30 °C temperature, 50 rpm agitation speed and pH 6. The maximum experimental bioethanol yield obtained after applying ANN-GA was 0.242 ± 0.002 g/g RS, which was in close proximity with the predicted value (0.239 g/g RS). Hence, the developed ANN-GA model can be applied as an efficient approach for predicting the fermentative bioethanol production from macroalgal biomass.

Date Fruit and Seed in Nutricosmetics

Many recent studies in the field of cosmetics have focused on organically sourced substances. Products made from organic materials are safe, high quality, cruelty-free, and more effective than those made from synthetic materials. Many organic compounds are known to be physiologically active in humans and have an extended storage capacity and long-lasting environmental effects. Agro-industrial waste has recently increased substantially, and the disposal of date palm waste, often performed in primitive ways such as burning, is harmful to the environment. Fruit processing industries generate over 10% of the total date seed waste daily, which could be converted into useful food products. Date fruit and seed are rich in sugar, vitamins, fiber, minerals, and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that significantly promote human and animal health. This waste is rich in bioactive compounds and essential oils used in many kinds of food, medicine, and cosmetics. Most active cosmetic ingredients come from natural sources such as fruit, fish, and dairy, and recent research shows that date extract and seed oil help to reduce melanin, eczema, acne, and dry patches, while increasing skin moisture and elasticity. This review details the bioactive compounds and nutraceutical properties of date fruit and seed, and their use as cosmetic ingredients.
