The Relationship between Self-Confidence, Self-Efficacy, Grit, Usefulness, and Ease of Use of eLearning Platforms in Corporate Training during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Medical and nursing students' satisfaction with e-learning platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic: Initial findings of an experimental project in China

Satisfaction with learning management systems (LMSs) is an essential indicator of students' e-learning experiences and reflects the quality of e-learning. Applying the technology satisfaction model, the present study aimed to investigate medical and nursing students' satisfaction with LMSs and its predictors. We conducted our survey at a medical university located in East China and received a total of 329 effective responses. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the data. Our findings confirmed that perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness were two direct predictors of medical and nursing students' satisfaction with LMSs. Furthermore, the influence of perceived usefulness on satisfaction was more powerful than that of perceived ease of use. This study also substantiated that computer self-efficacy and perceived ease of use can indirectly impact medical and nursing students' satisfaction with LMSs. Our research effectively links the theoretical hypotheses with empirical findings, highlighting the central role of Computer Self-Efficacy (CSE), perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness in shaping medical and nursing students' satisfaction with LMSs. Our findings contributed to the understanding of the technology satisfaction model and medical and nursing students' e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effects of Exercise Habits and Gender on Sports e-Learning Behavior: Evidence from an Eye-Tracking Study

Background/Objective

In the post-epidemic era, an increasing number of individuals were accustomed to learning sports and physical activity knowledge online for fitness and health demands. However, most previous studies have examined the influence of e-learning materials and resources on learners and have neglected intrinsic factors such as experience and physiological characteristics. Therefore, we conducted a study to investigate the effect of exercise habits and gender on sports e-learning behavior via eye-tracking technology.

Methods

We recruited a sample of 60 undergraduate students (mean age = 19.6) from a university in Nanjing, China. They were randomly assigned into 4 groups based on 2 genders × 2 exercise habits. Their gaze behavior was collected by an eye-tracking device during the experiment. The cognitive Load Test and Learning Effect Test were conducted at the end of the individual experiment.

Results

(1) Compared to the non-exercise habit group, the exercise habit group had a higher fixation count (P<0.05), a shorter average fixation duration (P<0.05), a smaller average pupil diameter (P<0.05), and a lower subjective cognitive load (P<0.05) and better learning outcome (P<0.05). (2) Male participants showed a greater tendency to process information from the video area of interest (AOIs), and had lower subjective cognitive load (P < 0.05) and better learning outcomes (P < 0.05). (3) There was no interaction effect between exercise habits and gender for any of the indicators (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

Our results indicate that exercise habits effectively enhance sports e-learning outcomes and reduce cognitive load. The exercise habits group showed significant improvements in fixation counts, average fixation duration, and average pupil diameter. Furthermore, male subjects exhibited superior learning outcomes, experienced lower cognitive load, and demonstrated greater attentiveness to dynamic visual information. These conclusions are expected to improve sports e-learning success and address educational inequality.

Motivating online language learning: exploring ideal L2 self, grit, and self-efficacy in relation to student satisfaction

Introduction

This study delves into the intricate network of motivational factors that influence online learning satisfaction among intermediate-level English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in mainland China.

Methods

A diverse sample of 496 EFL students participated in this research. Structural Equation Modeling was employed as the analytical method.

Results

The results of the study reveal significant and positive relationships between ideal L2 self and L2 grit with online learning satisfaction. Additionally, online learning self-efficacy emerged as a crucial mediator between ideal L2 self and online learning satisfaction, as well as between L2 grit and online learning satisfaction.

Discussion

These findings provide valuable insights into the motivational dynamics within online language learning contexts. They offer practical implications for educators and instructional designers seeking to enhance students' online learning experiences.

Exploring the role of TESOL and digital technology in attitudinal change and sustainable learning for students of higher education

PURPOSE

This study explores the potential of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in encouraging attitudinal change and long-term learning and how digital technology might influence this process. The significance of the study lies in its insights to educators and policymakers to enhance language education quality and promote sustainable learning in higher education. Using a socio-cultural theoretical framework, the study presents a novel perspective on integrating digital technology into language education for improved learning outcomes. Additionally, the findings can facilitate the development of inventive teaching methods incorporating digital technology, resulting in better language education outcomes in higher education.

METHODOLOGY

The population comprised faculty members of Chinese universities. Data was collected through a standardized questionnaire from 307 respondents and analyzed using Mplus.

FINDINGS

The findings can be incorporated into language instruction rules to enhance language acquisition and advance intercultural understanding. Based on the study's findings, researchers can conduct additional research on applying digital technology in language instruction and investigate its potential to support long-term learning and attitude development. As they work to create successful techniques for encouraging sustainable learning habits and good attitudes toward language acquisition, TESOL practitioners, educators, policymakers, and researchers will be impacted by the findings.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

The findings can help TESOL practitioners create efficient teaching methods that encourage long-term learning habits and favorable attitudes toward language learning. Language teachers can use the results to improve their instruction methods and their effects on student learning.

ORIGINALITY/VALUE

Social and cultural theory supports this study's model. The approach helps in defining and measuring the TESOL, sustainable Learning. The study further established the moderating role of digital technology and the mediating part of Improved self-efficacy and self-regulated Learning.

Impact of the internet on English language learning among university students: mediating role of academic self-efficacy

The internet is a valuable resource in a technologically evolved society. The extant literature suggests that their scientific and educational usages are still limited. The current study asserts that the internet can provide new learning environments and opportunities for Chinese university students, hence increasing their motivation to learn. Particularly, the current study considers this to be the case for learning a foreign language (English), which leads to more efficient and effective language learning experiences, as well as more positive attitudes toward the efficiency of the internet for educational purposes. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were employed to gather data from 15 public and private Chinese universities (406 students), those who are currently enrolled in English language courses. The analysis was performed using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) on smart PLS 4 software. Results revealed that student's attitude toward the use of internet positively and significantly influence English language learning. Moreover, the mediating variable academic self-efficacy positively and significantly mediates the relationship between students' attitude toward use of internet and English language learning. The current study recommends that students' academic self-efficacy in learning a new language can be enhanced by giving them opportunities to learn internet skills. Further, students' confidence in their academic abilities can be boosted using student-centered teaching strategies.

Impact of digital communications on project efficiency through ease of use and top management support

The pandemic has made the world witness an overnight transition from traditional to digital space owning to a lockdown, affecting everyday life. During the lockdown, the business community and people switched to online communication tools for survival. The behaviour towards adopting online communication tools during the pandemic has opened a new direction for researchers to study. This study aims to understand how during the covid-19 lockdown, digital communication tools affect project efficiency. It also explored to what extent project performance (PP) has been affected by digital communication during the lockdown. The study has used a cross-sectional quantitative-based approach. Moreover, a convenience sampling technique was adopted to collect. The target respondents are the project staff and employees of humanitarian organisations comprising international non-profit organisations (INGOs), UN agencies, and local non-profit organisations (NGOs) based in Pakistan. The survey was shared with 400 employees, and only 302 respondents responded. The results show that the user behaviour towards adopting digital communication tools is high; digital communication tools have an impact on project performance, while ease of use significantly moderates the relationship between digital communications tools and project performance compared to top management support. The research helps study employees' struggles in adopting change and advising organisations to devise practical digital communication strategies and business continuity plans to cope with crises.

Grit, general self-efficacy, and life satisfaction: The mediating role of hope

This study examines the mediating role of hope in the relationship between grit, general self-efficacy, and life satisfaction. The sample of the study consisted of 485 university students (68.7% female). The age of the participants ranged from 18 to 39 (Mean: 20.85, SD: 2.30). According to the findings of the study, positive significant relationships were found between grit, general self-efficacy, hope and life satisfaction. hope fully mediated the impact of grit on life satisfaction. Additionally, hope fully mediates the effect of general self-efficacy on life satisfaction. These findings suggest that grit and general self-efficacy associated with life satisfaction can be better understood with hope. Hope can be a factor that increases individuals' resilience and general self-efficacy and is an important aspect of positive-based interventions.

Challenges of E-Learning: Behavioral Intention of Academicians to Use E-Learning during COVID-19 Crisis

The COVID-19 crisis demanded that all educational activities should be performed virtually to follow social distancing guidelines. Therefore, there was a need to perform a research study to assess the effects of external factors on the perceived usefulness, ease of use of e-learning, and the further effect of these perceptions on attitude and intent to use e-learning by using the technology acceptance model (TAM) among academicians at higher education institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, and data were collected from 263 academicians across Saudi Arabia through an online survey questionnaire using a non-probability purposive sampling technique and analyzed and tested using the SPSS and Smart PLS software. Results: This study found that self-efficacy was positively associated with perceived usefulness at β = 0.143 and p < 0.05, but it had no association with perceived ease of use at β = 0.057 at p > 0.05. System accessibility had a significant and positive relationship with perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use at β = 0.283, β = 0.247, and p < 0.01, respectively. Self-efficacy had a positive effect on perceived usefulness, whereas the subjective norm had no relationship with perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use at β = −0.065 and β = −0.012 at p > 0.05, respectively. Perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness were positively related to attitude towards use, which has a significant influence on intention to use e-learning. Conclusion: Perceived ease of application is the most significant factor (β = 0.556) in developing the attitude among academicians to practice e-learning, followed by perceived usefulness (β = 0.262). Moreover, it can be concluded that system accessibility has a stronger influence on developing perception among academicians about the expediency and ease of application of e-learning than self-efficacy.

Secondary teachers' competencies and attitude: A mediated multigroup model based on usefulness and enjoyment to examine the differences between key dimensions of STEM teaching practice

This research explores the mediating role of perceived usefulness and enjoyment of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching practice between secondary teachers' competencies and attitudes in the formal educational context. Also, the research aimed to examine if the relationships between model constructs differ by STEM teaching practice dimension (e.g., Inquiry-based learning (IBL) and Integration of STEM content (INT)). We synthesized the will, skill, tool model (WST), technology acceptance model (TAM) and flow theory (FLT) to develop a theoretical model predicting teacher attitude under the influence of Competencies, Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Enjoyment. Therefore, a mediated multigroup model with validated data from three hundred Romanian secondary teachers who completed questionnaires related to their competencies, perceived usefulness, enjoyment, and attitude toward STEM teaching practices was used. Two comparative teacher survey studies were carried out: one for IBL and one for INT. There are direct and positive relationships between Competencies and Attitude, Competencies and Enjoyment, Competencies and Usefulness, and Enjoyment and Attitude for both IBL and INT teaching practices. The partial least squares path modeling (PLS-SEM) results showed that the control variables had no significant impact on attitude. This research supports evidence for the belief that teachers' competency is a key predictor of attitude. Precisely, the positive strong direct effect of Competencies on Attitude is similar for IBL (β = 0.49, t = 7.46, p < 0.001; f 2 (Effect size) = 0.29) with for INT teaching practice (β = 0.46, t = 6.46, p < 0.001; f2 (Effect size) = 0.22). Interestingly, this research showed that the perceived Usefulness and Enjoyment partially mediated the association between Competencies and Attitude in both case studies. Understanding the mediating role of perceived usefulness and enjoyment for each STEM practice would help teachers successfully implement STEM education.

Teachers during the COVID-19 Era: The Mediation Role Played by Mentalizing Ability on the Relationship between Depressive Symptoms, Anxious Trait, and Job Burnout

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 outbreak caused severe changes in school activities over the past two years. Teachers underwent a re-planning of their teaching approaches, shifting from face-to-face teaching formats to remote ones. These challenges resulted in high levels of burnout. The identification of risk/protective factors contributing to burnout is crucial in order to inform intervention programs. Thus, we hypothesized a mediation role of teachers' mentalizing ability (processing of emotions, a component of mentalized affectivity) on the relationship between depression, anxiety, and depersonalization (burnout dimension). Two reverse models were computed. Job satisfaction, teachers' age and gender, school grade, and length of teaching experience served as covariates.

METHODS

466 (M(sd) = 46.2 (10.4) years) online questionnaires were completed by Italian teachers of primary (n = 204) and middle (n = 242) schools. Measures of burnout, depression, anxiety, and mentalization were administered.

RESULTS

The findings corroborated our hypotheses: in all models, processing emotions served as a mediator on the relationship between depression, anxiety, and depersonalization, and on the reciprocal one. Job satisfaction positively impacted processing emotion, and negatively impacted depression and depersonalization; women teachers reported high levels of the anxious trait.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, it can be concluded that the ability to mentalize has a beneficial impact on teachers' well-being. Policymaking, clinical, and research implications were discussed.

The Effect of on Educational Technology on EFL Learners' Self-Efficacy

This paper aimed at investigating the related studies on educational technology and its effect on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learner self-efficacy. Earlier studies have proved the positive and significant relationship between learner self-efficacy and educational technology use. Investigations have revealed that improving learners’ dynamic mindsets, online interaction, self-assessment, academic knowledge, and positive affectivity can increase learner self-efficacy. Moreover, the provision of the encouraging context can help develop learners’ self-efficacy in technology-supported education. Furthermore, the study presented the implications and future directions of this line of research for different people, such as EFL teachers, teacher educators, and foreign language scholars. The ideas can improve their awareness of learner self-efficacy in technology-supported educational contexts and its role in L2 education.

The Role of Classroom Contexts on Learners' Grit and Foreign Language Anxiety: Online vs. Traditional Learning Environment

This review aimed at exploring the related investigations on the effects of online and traditional learning contexts on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ grit and foreign language anxiety (FLA). Studies have verified the relationship between learners’ grit and academic performance in online learning contexts. However, there is a need for studying the effect of face-to-face learning and face-to-screen learning on learners’ grit. On the other hand, studies have shown that classroom context is a mediating variable in the relationship between grit and FLA. Furthermore, few studies have been done on the effect of traditional classroom contexts and online learning contexts on learners’ FLA. Most studies showed that online learning contexts create more FLA. There are some reasons such as ambiguity of contexts, lack of feedback, lack of opportunities for communication, type of employed applications, cognitive load, technophobia, and reduction in enthusiasm which arouse learners’ anxiety in an online learning environment. In the end, the pedagogical implications are expounded to promote the learners’ grit and diminish anxiety for better performance. This review also provides some suggestions for further research to clarify our perspective on positive and negative emotional variables.

The Interplay of English as a Foreign Language Learners’ Interest, Self-Efficacy, and Involvement

Founded on the advent of Positive Psychology in recent decades, the learners’ involvement has been a critical issue since the origin of teaching and learning despite it being quickly developed in previous decades. The enhancement of motivational aspects like self-efficacy and interest appears to have a high impact on learners’ success and achievement. Although both constructs are extensively investigated in various subjects, their association between and the learners’ involvement in the process of language learning have not been taken into account so far. This review intended to scrutinize the association among students’ self-efficacy, their academic interest, and their involvement. It is significant to pinpoint that the current review can help educational administrations, professional improvement centers, and policymakers to consider the above-mentioned issues in the progression of language education to develop their involvement.

Examining the Associations between COVID-19-Related Psychological Distress, Social Media Addiction, COVID-19-Related Burnout, and Depression among School Principals and Teachers through Structural Equation Modeling

This study aims to investigate the relationships between COVID-19-related psychological distress, social media addiction, COVID-19-related burnout, and depression. The research, which was designed according to the relational survey model, was conducted with the participation of 332 school principals and teachers who received graduate education in the field of educational administration. Research data were collected through online surveys and then structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test and analyze the proposed hypotheses. The study’s findings revealed that COVID-19-related psychological distress strongly predicted COVID-19-related burnout. In this context, as the psychological distress associated with COVID-19 increased, the sense of burnout associated with COVID-19 also increased. However, it was found that burnout associated with COVID-19 significantly and positively predicted depression. SEM results revealed that COVID-19-related psychological distress directly affected COVID-19-related burnout, depression, and social media addiction. In addition, it was determined that an indirect effect of COVID-19-related burnout and social media addiction exists in the relationship between COVID-19-related psychological distress and depression.

The Impact of Agile Management and Technology in Teaching and Practicing Physical Education and Sports

The context of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused educational institutions and sports clubs to change their management strategy. Due to the modernization of computer technology, physical education and sports (PES) teachers decided to include this technology in their teaching activity to help students and athletes to acquire PES-specific transversal skills and digital skills, and also to increase the attractiveness of the lessons. The present research aims at assessing the challenges and opportunities of technology and adopting an Agile Management style to improve the teaching, learning, and practice of PES. Therefore, a survey was conducted on PES teachers and trainers, as they have a clear perspective on the field and their views are therefore very important and relevant to our study, even if they do not have solutions for all the challenges facing them. They were asked to share their professional opinions regarding the implementation of digital methods and applications on the sportive results of performance sportsmen, athletes, and students. The survey, conducted on 144 respondents, contained mostly multiple-choice questions rated on a Likert scale and open-ended questions allowing respondents to offer solutions and express their opinion freely. This article demonstrates the positive influence of Agile Management in the choice and implementation of technology dedicated to PES.

Exploring the Conceptual Constructs of Learners' Goal Commitment, Grit, and Self-Efficacy

Although learners' success in learning has generally been attributed to cognitive factors, non-cognitive issues in education should be taken into consideration in the process of learning which affects learners' achievement. One of these issues, which become popular among researchers in the previous decade is grit, that is, posited as passion and perseverance thanks to its enduring quality and the other is self-efficacy. Another factor is goal commitment that talks about the way to reach a goal or insistent determinations to achieve a goal. The proposed review attempts to focus on these three factors in regulating students' learning achievement. Accordingly, some educational suggestions are offered for teachers, students, and syllabus designers.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Chinese Teachers during COVID-19 Pandemic: Roles of Fear of COVID-19, Nomophobia, and Psychological Distress

There are limited data concerning the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among teachers. Therefore, the present study estimated the prevalence of PTSD among mainland Chinese teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic and to construct a model with mediation and moderation effects to explain the PTSD. Data collection was conducted in schools in the Jiangxi province between October and November 2020 among k-12 schoolteachers. An online survey, including five different psychometric scales, was used to collect data. All participants were assessed for PTSD using the Chinese version of the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). Hayes' PROCESS Model 8 was used to examine the potential factors explaining a higher PTSD scores. A total of 2603 teachers from k-12 schools participated. With the cutoff score at 31, the prevalence of PTSD was 12.3% but decreased to 1.0% when the cutoff score was at 49. Nomophobia moderated the effects of Fear of COVID-19 Scale on PTSD. The findings suggest that fear of COVID-19 among teachers leads to PTSD via psychological distress, highlighting the moderating effect of nomophobia in this association. Based on the study's findings, psychological interventions and educational training are needed to reduce fear among teachers at higher risk of developing PTSD.

Should I Stay or Should I Go? Linking Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy to Intention to Stay in the Hospitality Industry Based on Internship Experience

Internships are increasingly being used in the hospitality industry, as these can provide students with opportunities to examine their abilities, interests, and career decisions in a workplace context, as well as help cultivate human resources within this sector. This study thus examines students’ career decision-making self-efficacy with regard to internships. Based on social cognitive theory and career decision-making self-efficacy theory, we developed the research constructs with a focus group interview and a review of the existing literature, and then verified their content validity and scale reliability. Using 782 student data from the hospitality management departments, we found the direct influence of career decision-making self-efficacy in relation to internships on the intention to stay in the hospitality industry. Most important of all, we also found the mediating roles of internship satisfaction and career commitment in the relationship between decision-making self-efficacy and intention to stay in the hospitality industry, as well as the moderating roles of intrinsic motivation in the relationships among career decision-making self-efficacy, internship satisfaction, career commitment, and intention to stay in the hospitality industry. The theoretical and practical implications of these results in the context of hospitality will be discussed.

Sports Training during COVID-19 First Lockdown—A Romanian Coaches’ Experience

COVID-19 restrictions impacted sports training and its human resources. The purpose of this study was to highlight the difficulties faced by Romanian coaches while carrying out online training during the first lockdown. It was assumed that the training coordinates were significantly influenced by distance coaching and that the coaches’ self-perceived efficacy was related to their digital skills. The study involved 407 coaches (62.16% men, 37.84% women), with a mean age of 41.7 ± 10.01 years, who completed an online questionnaire with 16 items. The statistics analysis was both quantitative and qualitative, with a significance level of 95%. T test was used for the training duration and for the differences between the coaches’ seniority. Chi-squared test was applied between sports branches and Anova for the non-parametric data. Correlations and regression model were performed to estimate the relationship between variables. It was revealed that 87.22% of the coaches adjusted their initial objectives and that the IT tools were provided through coaches’ own financial resources for 83.05% of them. Overall, 51.84% of the coaches failed to engage all athletes in online training; for the rest of them, an association with their professional experience and sports branches was demonstrated (χ2(8) = 34.688, p = 0.001). ANOVA confirmed that the ability to use IT tools influenced online training efficiency at p < 0.005. The results emphasized that Romanian coaches encountered difficulties related to training programming, IT use, with consequences on their professional self-efficacy.

Teachers’ Burnout during COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain: Trait Emotional Intelligence and Socioemotional Competencies

The aim of this research is to recognize the burnout levels in a group of high school teachers that exercised their profession during the COVID-19 pandemic, looking forward to examining the correlation between burnout levels, trait emotional intelligence and socioemotional competencies (Autonomy, Regulation, Prosocial Behaviour and Empathy). The study counted with a sample of 430 high school teachers from multiple regions of Spain. The participants’ age was between 25 and 60, and the gender distribution was 53.72% for men and 46.28% for women. We used the Spanish version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24) and the Socioemotional Competences Scale (SCS). The main results indicated that teachers showed high levels of burnout dimensions, with women being the most affected, reaching higher levels in comparison to men. It was also observed that the older and more experienced professionals showed lower levels of burnout. Finally, statistically significant negative relations were found between emotional intelligence and burnout levels, as well as their association with the teacher’s socioemotional competencies. The analysis argues the possible consequences of stress during the pandemic and, correspondingly, the need for promoting protective approaches that embrace emotional intelligence and socioemotional competencies.
