Abstract
Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a predominant cause of invasive disease in sub-Saharan Africa especially among children under 5 years. Asymptomatic fecal shedding of NTS is hypothesized to contribute to the human-to-human transmission of NTS especially in low-resource settings. However, the role of pathogen shedding in invasive disease is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and duration of fecal shedding of NTS among children under 5 years convalescing from invasive NTS disease and among healthy individuals in the community. Children presenting with fever of ≥38°C with or without diarrhea were recruited at four health facilities in Nairobi, between June 2021 and August 2023. Blood and stool samples collected were subjected to culture for the isolation of NTS (S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium). Children with NTS culture-positive samples (index cases) were followed up post-acute disease where household contacts and controls provided stool samples for isolation of NTS. NTS prevalence among the 3,293 individuals recruited was 1.52%. Asymptomatic shedding post-treatment was observed in almost one-third (31%) of the 42 index cases followed up. Of the 13 with intestinal shedding, 7 were shedding NTS of the same sequence type (ST) as the one recovered during acute disease. The longest duration of intestinal shedding was 3 months post-treatment. Of the 241 healthy individuals recruited, 8 had asymptomatic shedding of NTS, and 2 of these were closely related to those recovered from index cases. These findings support the hypothesis of human-to-human transmission of NTS in sub-Saharan Africa highlighting the possible benefit of vaccine introduction. IMPORTANCE Asymptomatic fecal shedding of nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is hypothesized to contribute to the human-to-human transmission of NTS especially in low-resource settings which could lead to invasive disease among high-risk populations, especially children. Our findings reiterate the hypothesis that human reservoirs could be important in the transmission of nontyphoidal Salmonella in sub-Saharan Africa. This underscores the importance of developing infection prevention measures which could include vaccine deployment and improving water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure.

Abstract
Climate change is expected to profoundly impact health and coping and widen social and environmental inequalities. People living in informal settlements are especially vulnerable to climate change as they are often located in ecologically sensitive areas more susceptible to extreme weather events (EWEs), such as floods, droughts, and heat waves. Women residing in informal settlements are especially vulnerable to climate change and related EWEs because they are more likely to experience worse health-related impacts than men but are less likely to have access to health-related services. Despite this inequality, there is a dearth of research that focuses on the impacts of EWEs on women in informal settlements. This study aims to explore the multidimensional impacts of EWEs on the daily lives of women in informal settlements through the lens of socio-ecological theory. Study data is from six monthly surveys (1 September 2022-28 February 2023) collected from a probability sample of 800 women living in two of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. This data is part of an ongoing longitudinal study that uses community participatory methods to investigate the effects of climate change on health and wellbeing in informal settlements by a team of 16 community health volunteers who lead data collection and provide expertise in ongoing analysis. Findings show profound impacts on women's health and wellbeing across individual, micro-, meso-, exo-, and macrosystems. These include physical and mental health, financial disruptions, property issues, social impacts, and impacts on their surrounding physical environment, such as disrupted food or water access, poor air quality, drainage issues, and safety concerns. In addition, findings highlight the critical importance of the chrono- and biosphere systems in research focused on the impacts of climate change and related EWEs among climate-vulnerable communities and marginalized populations within them.

Abstract
Achieving the health and well-being related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the World Health Organization's (WHO) Triple Billion Targets depends on informed decisions that are based on concerted data collection and monitoring efforts. Even though data availability has been increasing in recent years, significant gaps still remain for routine surveillance to guide policies and actions. The COVID-19 crisis has shown that more and better data and strengthened health information systems are needed to inform timely decisions that save lives. Traditional sources of data such as nationally representative surveys are not adequate for addressing this challenge alone. Additionally, the funding required to measure all health and well-being related SDG indicators and Triple Billion Targets using only traditional sources of data is a challenge to achieving efficient, timely and reliable monitoring systems. Citizen science, public participation in scientific research and knowledge production, can contribute to addressing some of these data gaps efficiently and sustainably when designed well, and ultimately, could contribute to the achievement of the health and well-being related SDGs and Triple Billion Targets. Through a systematic review of health and well-being related indicators, as well as citizen science initiatives, this paper aims to explore the potential of citizen science for monitoring health and well-being and for mobilizing action toward the achievement of health and well-being related targets as outlined in the SDG framework and Triple Billion Targets. The results demonstrate that out of 58 health and well-being related indicators of the SDGs and Triple Billion Targets covered in this study, citizen science could potentially contribute to monitoring 48 of these indicators and their targets, mostly at a local and community level, which can then be upscaled at a national level with the projection to reach global level monitoring and implementation. To integrate citizen science with official health and well-being statistics, the main recommendation is to build trusted partnerships with key stakeholders including National Statistical Offices, governments, academia and the custodian agencies, which is mostly the WHO for these health and well-being related targets and indicators.
