How Do Eutrophication and Temperature Interact to Shape the Community Structures of Phytoplankton and Fish in Lakes?

Schoenoplectus americanus as a potential phytoremediator: in vitro assessment of its ability to remove contaminants in domestic and tannery wastewater

Growing industrialization and urbanization have led to increased water pollution due to the inadequate treatment and disposal of domestic wastewater (DW) and wastewater produced by industries such as tanneries (TW). These wastewaters are characterized by high concentrations of organic matter, nutrients, sulphates, chlorides and high microbial load. TW also contains phenols and chromium, which disturb and harm the ecosystem the local. The decontamination of wastewater prior to their discharge through biological tools, especially the use of species that are native to the site in need of treatment, has been described as effective and advantageous. This study evaluated the ability of Schoenoplectus americanus, a native plant species from Cordoba (Argentina), to phytoremediate local DW and TW samples at a laboratory scale. The aim was to ascertain whether this system could potentially be considered for the remediation of wastewater in real-world scenarios. S. americanus was able to tolerate pure DW and a 1/20 (v/v) dilution of TW for 30 days under hydroponic conditions. Removal rates ranging from 50% to 89% were obtained for residual organic matter (determined as chemical oxygen demand or COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). Significant removal of total chromium (TCr) and total phenols (TPhs) was also observed in TW (85% and 98%). The number of total coliforms (TC), was reduced by about 96% and 99%. These results indicate that S. americanus is a good candidate for the phytoremediation of regional DW and TW. For this reason, it may be considered for full-scale applications in the future.

Young-of-the-year fish as bioindicators of eutrophication and temperature regime of water bodies

Young-of-the-year fish communities are widely used as bioindicators of various environmental disturbances. This study was conducted from 1997 to 2015 and aims to develop fish trait-based indices of changes in the temperature regime and eutrophication of water bodies in the Dnipro River basin. We identified fish traits that significantly correlate with both temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration optimum: reproduction habitat, oxygen tolerance, and toxicity tolerance. Compared to other ecological groups, lithophilic species exhibited the lowest degree of thermal and eutrophication optimum, indicating this species' greater vulnerability to environmental alteration. Fish species that are intolerant to water quality and low oxygen concentration were the most sensitive to changes in temperature regime and eutrophication level. Salinity preferences and water quality tolerance emerged as reliable predictors of temperature optimum. Freshwater fish had an average temperature optimum that was 4.5% higher than that of freshwater-brackish and freshwater-brackish-marine fish. Species tolerance to the temperature factors and nutrient loads correlated only with rheophily, with rheophilic species having an average 13.8% higher temperature tolerance than other fish species and a 10.4% higher chlorophyll-a concentration tolerance. The fish temperature index increased over time during the study period in all the studied water bodies, consistent with ongoing warming affecting all sites. In contrast, the Fish Eutrophication Index showed greater temporal heterogeneity in studied water bodies, indicating various adaptative potentials of fish communities to eutrophication. These indices can be relevant for assessing disturbed situations caused by changes in climatic and anthropogenic impacts on water bodies.

Measuring biodiversity vulnerability in French lakes - The IVCLA index

Assessing the vulnerability of ecosystems to biodiversity loss has become increasingly crucial in conservation and ecology research. This study proposed a methodology for measuring lake vulnerability to biodiversity loss employing an established framework that combines three components. For this, we measured the resilience (functional redundancy) and sensitivity (an index considering three characteristics of rarity) components for fish and phytoplankton communities. We also measured the exposure component of the main stressors in lakes. We then combined the three components and calculated the vulnerability index (IVCLA) using data from 255 French lakes. We found that all lakes exhibited low levels of resilience, elevated sensitivity regarding average values for fish and phytoplankton groups, and medium exposure to stressors associated with human activities. In addition, there were some discrepancies in resilience and sensitivity patterns between fish and phytoplankton groups, emphasizing the importance of considering information from multiple biological groups when assessing ecosystem vulnerability. Hydrological alterations and low water quality were key stressors related to higher lake vulnerability. Most French lakes have been classified as exhibiting moderate vulnerability. It is crucial to emphasize the potential increase in exposure risks, which could lead to even higher vulnerability levels and, subsequently, biodiversity loss in the future. The IVCLA index offers several advantages, including integrating multiple taxa groups and stressors. We recommend incorporating additional data, such as the resilience and sensitivity of the entire food web, and considering temporal responses to stressors to improve accuracy and predictive power. The IVCLA was developed with the purpose of serving as an effective tool for guiding environmental managers in designing conservation strategies and making informed decisions for lake ecosystems.

Wetland transformation and its impact on the livelihood of the fishing community in a flood plain river basin of India

Discretely wetland transformations and livelihood vulnerability related works are profoundly found worldwide, but their linkage is not investigated often. The present study aimed to explore the after damming transformation of wetland's eco-hydrological status and water quality and assessed its effects on livelihood vulnerability state of the fishermen community in the lower part of the Tangon river basin. Based on 15 field and satellite image-driven indicators of transformation, multiple machine learning (ML) algorithms were used to model the eco-hydrological state (EHS) of the wetland. Livelihood Vulnerability Index (LVI) of 45 fishing-dominated villages was computed using a balanced weighted LVI score. The result revealed that 60.55 % wetland area was obliterated between the pre- dam and post-dam periods, and the existing wetland area (21.06 km²) witnessed noticeable eco-hydrological and water quality degradation. Correlation and kernel density estimation (KDE) plot clearly revealed that rate of EHS degradation and water quality changes was negatively associated (at ≤0.01 level of significance) and both controlled LVI. So, such changes not only pose pressure on the aquatic species like fishes but also hampered the well-being of the fishermen communities evolving. The findings of the work would be useful in this transition while deciding the alternative strategies to build a resilient community. Moreover, since the eco-hydrological state were explored this would be effective for wetland restoration planning.

Modeling the effect of climate change scenarios on water quality for tropical reservoirs

Impact of natural phenomena and anthropogenic activities on water quality is closely related with temperature increase and global warming. In this study, the effects of climate change scenarios on water quality forecasts were assessed through correlations, prediction algorithms, and water quality index (WQI) for tropical reservoirs. The expected trends for different water quality parameters were estimated for the 2030-2100 period in association with temperature trends to estimate water quality using historical data from a dam in Mexico. The WQI scenarios were obtained using algorithms supported by global models of representative concentration pathways (RCPs) adopted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The RPCs were used to estimate water and air temperature values and extrapolate future WQI values for the water reservoir. The proposed algorithms were validated using historical information collected from 2012 to 2019 and four temperature variation intervals from 3.2 to 5.4 °C (worst forecast) to 0.9-2.3 °C (best forecast) were used for each trajectory using 0.1 °C increases to obtain the trend for each WQI parameter. Variations in the concentration (±30, ±70, and +100) of parameters related to anthropogenic activity (e.g., total suspended solids, fecal coliforms, and chemical oxygen demand) were simulated to obtain water quality scenarios for future health diagnosis of the reservoir. The results projected in the RCP models showed increasing WQI variation for lower temperature values (best forecast WQI = 74; worst forecast WQI = 71). This study offers a novel approach that integrates multiparametric statistical and WQI to help decision making on sustainable water resources management for tropical reservoirs impacted by climate change.

Sub-Saharan Africa Freshwater Fisheries under Climate Change: A Review of Impacts, Adaptation, and Mitigation Measures

Sub-Saharan Africa’s freshwater fisheries contribute significantly to the livelihoods and food security of millions of people within the region. However, freshwater fisheries are experiencing multiple anthropogenic stressors such as overfishing, illegal fishing, pollution, and climate change. There is a substantial body of literature on the effects of climate change on freshwater fisheries in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study reviews the existing literature and highlights the effects of climate change on freshwater fisheries, the adaptation strategies of fishery-dependent households in response to the effects, and fisheries’ management and mitigation efforts in the face of climate change. The general effects of climate change on freshwater environments include warming water temperatures, increased stratification, modified hydrological processes, and increased pollutants. These effects adversely affect the physiological processes of fish and the overall wellbeing of fishery-dependent people. To cope with the effects of fluctuating fishery resources due to climate change, fishery-dependent people have adopted several adaptation strategies including livelihood diversification, changing their fishing gear, increasing their fishing efforts, and targeting new species. Several management attempts have been made to enhance the sustainability of fishery resources, from local to regional levels. This study recommends the participation of the resource users in the formulation of policies aimed at promoting climate change adaptation and the resilience of freshwater fisheries for sustainable development.

Decadal biodiversity trends in rivers reveal recent community rearrangements

While it is recognized that biodiversity currently declines at a global scale, we still have an incomplete understanding of local biodiversity trends under global change. To address this deficiency, we examined the recent decadal trends in water quality and biodiversity (taxonomic and functional) of key river organisms (diatoms, macroinvertebrates and fish) in France. We implemented regression, RLQ and fourth-corner analyses. Our results showed that nutrient loads tended to decrease, diatom richness tended to decline and macoinvertebrate richness tended to increase. The recovery of sensitive taxa in all three groups suggested a successful outcome of water quality management in France over the past decades. Our study further revealed consistent rearrangements within river communities, with a decrease in the ratio of planktonic to benthic diatoms, and corresponding functional changes in macroinvertebrate and fish trait composition, indicative of a trophic cascade in response to changes in environmental conditions.

Multiple-stressor exposure of aquatic food webs: Nitrate and warming modulate the effect of pesticides

Shallow lakes provide essential ecological and environmental services but are exposed to multiple stressors, including agricultural runoff (ARO) and climate warming, which may act on different target receptors disrupting their normal functioning. We performed a microcosm experiment to determine the individual and combined effects of three stressors-pesticides, nitrate and climate warming-on two trophic levels representative of communities found in shallow lakes. We used three submerged macrophyte species (Myriophyllum spicatum, Potamogeton perfoliatus, Elodea nuttallii), eight benthic or pelagic microalgal species and three primary consumer species (Daphnia magna, Lymnaea stagnalis, Dreissena polymorpha) with different feeding preferences for benthic and pelagic primary producers. Eight different treatments consisted of a control, only nitrate, a pesticide cocktail, and a combination of nitrate and pesticides representing ARO, each replicated at ambient temperature and +3.5°C, mimicking climate warming. Pesticides negatively affected all functional groups except phytoplankton, which increased. Warming and nitrate modified these effects. Strong but opposite pesticide and warming effects on Myriophyllum drove the response of the total macrophyte biomass. Nitrate significantly suppressed Myriophyllum final biomass, but not overall macrophyte and microalgal biomass. Nitrate and pesticides in combination caused a macrophyte decline, and the system tipped towards phytoplankton dominance. Strong synergistic or even reversed stressor interaction effects were observed for macrophytes or periphyton. We emphasize the need for more complex community- and ecosystem-level studies incorporating multiple stressor scenarios to define safe operating spaces.

Phytoplankton community structure of Tang-Pu Reservoir: status and ecological assessment in relation to physicochemical variability

Seasonal variation in phytoplankton community structure within Tang-Pu Reservoir (Shaoxing city, Zhejiang province, China) was investigated in relation to variation in physicochemical and hydrological characteristics. Over the three-study seasons (autumn, winter, and spring), phytoplankton abundance and biomass showed a gradual increase with the peak in spring season. During this study period, phytoplankton community comprised of 7 phyla, 80 genera, and 210 species. The dominating phyla were Chlorophyta 80 species, Bacillariophyta 46, and Cyanophyta 44 as well as other phyla of freshwater ecosystems except Xanthophyta. The phytoplankton density and biomass varied in the six sampling sites between a minimum of 257.42 × 10⁴ cells/L to 1054.15 × 10⁴ cells/L and 1.60 mg/L to 4.56 mg/L respectively. Spring season had higher biomass and density values than autumn and winter. Furthermore, the results indicated that the Shannon-Wiener (H') and Pielou evenness (J') indices of phytoplankton community were stable although with slightly higher values in spring. Based on the calculated indices, Tang-Pu reservoir could be considered mesosaprobic in all the three seasons. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that pH, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), transparency, chlorophyll a (Chl a), dissolve oxygen (DO), and water temperature (WT) were responsible for most phytoplankton community shift from Bacillariophyta and Cryptophyta to Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta in spring. These environmental parameters play an essential role in the community structure variation of phytoplankton in the downstream and upstream of Tang-Pu Reservoir. A decreasing phytoplankton abundance trend from the river area (inlet) to the lake (outlet) was also observed.

How diatom-, invertebrate- and fish-based diagnostic tools can support the ecological assessment of rivers in a multi-pressure context: Temporal trends over the past two decades in France

The degradation of aquatic ecosystems, induced by worldwide intensification in the use of both land and aquatic resources, has highlighted the critical need for innovative methods allowing an objective quantification and ranking of anthropogenic pressure effects on aquatic organisms. Such diagnostic tools have a great potential for defining robust management responses to anthropogenic pressures. Our objective was to explore how the outputs of three diagnostic tools (based on benthic diatoms, macroinvertebrates and fishes) could be combined to (i) disentangle the temporal effects of multiple pressures over two decades and (ii) provide policy-relevant information for stream managers and decision makers. The diagnostic tools estimated, using taxonomy- and trait-based metrics, the impairment probabilities of biotic assemblages over time by different pressure categories, describing the alteration of water quality, hydromorphology and land use related to anthropogenic activities, in French streams (number of sites = 312). The main result shows that a large proportion of the time series exhibited no significant temporal patterns over the two decades (61.5% to 87.8%, depending on the used tests). Among time series exhibiting significant change, positive trends in impairment probabilities (i.e., degradation) were less frequent than negative ones, indicating a modest improvement in water quality at national scale over the study period. However, trends can be substantially different according to hydroecoregion and pressure category. The three biological compartments displayed convergent temporal responses according to the pressure category and regional context (e.g., lowland plains vs. mountains, pristine vs. agricultural regions). Altogether, this study proposes a unifying approach to integrate a vast amount of information in a single ecological diagnosis using an unparalleled database on natural and anthropized environments. Strengthening the synthesis of biological information provided by various biological compartments should be a priority before implementing evidence-based sustainable conservation and restoration actions.
