Assessing the Water-Stress Baselines by Thermal Imaging for Irrigation Management in Almond Plantations under Water Scarcity Conditions

Empirical Setting of the Water Stressed Baseline Increases the Uncertainty of the Crop Water Stress Index in a Humid Temperate Climate in Different Water Regimes

Water productivity of rice is imperative for global water security. Currently, water saving management techniques have been proposed and applied to rice systems. The crop water stress index (CWSI) is a major index for evaluating crop water use. The utility of the CWSI in rice in a humid temperate climate has been given little attention. Previous studies have focused on upland crops and readily available constant reference baselines, primarily the water stressed baseline (WSB), which does not inherently reflect transpiration flux. This study examined the performance of the estimated non-water stressed baseline (NWSB) and WSB for rice in a humid climate and the CWSI sensitivity under variable reference baseline scenarios in a 2-year pot trial under phytotron and field environment conditions with two rice genotypes (IRAT109 and Takanari) in a flooded (FL) and aerobic (AR) water regime. We observed that the dynamics of CWSI is dependent not only on the water regimes but could be strongly influenced by genotype sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit (VPD). A higher slope (pooled data) in the field environment (−5.68 °C kPa−1) compared to the phytotron (−3.04 °C kPa−1) reflected transpiration water loss sensitivity to VPD thresholds. Further studies with diverse rice germplasms to explore generalizability to field conditions and reformulation of reference baselines considering the VPD threshold sensitivity could prove to be significant.

Plant and soil microbial community responses to different water management strategies in an almond crop

Climate change is one of the main challenges facing the agricultural sector as it strives to meet global food needs. In arid and semiarid areas, the scarcity of water imposes the use of alternative sources - such as reclaimed water (RW) or desalinated water (DW) - and of deficit irrigation strategies, such as regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), in order to maintain productivity. The impact of both alternative water sources and RDI strategies on soil microbial communities in conjunction with the crop response has been little studied, and far less in fruit trees. Here, we evaluated the effects of the irrigation water quantity (RDI or the optimal water amount) and quality (DW or saline RW) on: i) the biomass, composition, and activity of the soil microbial community, and ii) the plant agro-physiological response at the level of the water status, nutrients, vegetative growth, and yield of almond trees. The DW-RDI treatment had a lower vegetative growth than the rest, reducing the nutrient requirements and increasing the contents of organic carbon and nitrogen in soil. This coincided with a significant increase in the bacterial biomass and enzyme activities in soil, as well as with a decrease in plant nutrient use efficiencies and yield. Irrigation with RW increased the fungal biomass. When there were no water restrictions (RW-FI), none of the plant agro-physiological parameters were affected; when RDI was applied (RW-RDI), the highest soil sodicity was reached and vegetative growth and yield were negatively affected, although the plant nutrient use efficiencies did not decrease as much as with DW-RDI. In addition, the plant nutrient use efficiencies were negatively correlated with the soil enzyme activities. These results improve our knowledge of the functioning of plant-soil interactions in Mediterranean crops subjected to different irrigation strategies.

Remote Sensing Energy Balance Model for the Assessment of Crop Evapotranspiration and Water Status in an Almond Rootstock Collection

One of the objectives of many studies conducted by breeding programs is to characterize and select rootstocks well-adapted to drought conditions. In recent years, field high-throughput phenotyping methods have been developed to characterize plant traits and to identify the most water use efficient varieties and rootstocks. However, none of these studies have been able to quantify the behavior of crop evapotranspiration in almond rootstocks under different water regimes. In this study, remote sensing phenotyping methods were used to assess the evapotranspiration of almond cv. "Marinada" grafted onto a rootstock collection. In particular, the two-source energy balance and Shuttleworth and Wallace models were used to, respectively, estimate the actual and potential evapotranspiration of almonds grafted onto 10 rootstock under three different irrigation treatments. For this purpose, three flights were conducted during the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons with an aircraft equipped with a thermal and multispectral camera. Stem water potential (Ψ _{s t e m} ) was also measured concomitant to image acquisition. Biophysical traits of the vegetation were firstly assessed through photogrammetry techniques, spectral vegetation indices and the radiative transfer model PROSAIL. The estimates of canopy height, leaf area index and daily fraction of intercepted radiation had root mean square errors of 0.57 m, 0.24 m m^-1 and 0.07%, respectively. Findings of this study showed significant differences between rootstocks in all of the evaluated parameters. Cadaman^® and Garnem^® had the highest canopy vigor traits, evapotranspiration, Ψ _{s t e m} and kernel yield. In contrast, Rootpac^® 20 and Rootpac^® R had the lowest values of the same parameters, suggesting that this was due to an incompatibility between plum-almond species or to a lower water absorption capability of the rooting system. Among the rootstocks with medium canopy vigor, Adesoto and IRTA 1 had a lower evapotranspiration than Rootpac^® 40 and Ishtara^®. Water productivity (WP) (kg kernel/mm water evapotranspired) tended to decrease with Ψ _{s t e m} , mainly in 2018. Cadaman^® and Garnem^® had the highest WP, followed by INRA GF-677, IRTA 1, IRTA 2, and Rootpac^® 40. Despite the low Ψ _{s t e m} of Rootpac^® R, the WP of this rootstock was also high.

Past and Future of Plant Stress Detection: An Overview From Remote Sensing to Positron Emission Tomography

Plant stress detection is considered one of the most critical areas for the improvement of crop yield in the compelling worldwide scenario, dictated by both the climate change and the geopolitical consequences of the Covid-19 epidemics. A complicated interconnection of biotic and abiotic stressors affect plant growth, including water, salt, temperature, light exposure, nutrients availability, agrochemicals, air and soil pollutants, pests and diseases. In facing this extended panorama, the technology choice is manifold. On the one hand, quantitative methods, such as metabolomics, provide very sensitive indicators of most of the stressors, with the drawback of a disruptive approach, which prevents follow up and dynamical studies. On the other hand qualitative methods, such as fluorescence, thermography and VIS/NIR reflectance, provide a non-disruptive view of the action of the stressors in plants, even across large fields, with the drawback of a poor accuracy. When looking at the spatial scale, the effect of stress may imply modifications from DNA level (nanometers) up to cell (micrometers), full plant (millimeters to meters), and entire field (kilometers). While quantitative techniques are sensitive to the smallest scales, only qualitative approaches can be used for the larger ones. Emerging technologies from nuclear and medical physics, such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, are expected to bridge the gap of quantitative non-disruptive morphologic and functional measurements at larger scale. In this review we analyze the landscape of the different technologies nowadays available, showing the benefits of each approach in plant stress detection, with a particular focus on the gaps, which will be filled in the nearby future by the emerging nuclear physics approaches to agriculture.
