Abstract
The composite pollutants formed by aged polystyrene (APS) and natural organic matter are complex and harmful, which lead to the deterioration of water quality. In this work, the interaction mechanism between humic acid (HA) and APS was discussed by investigating the changes in their functional groups. Besides, a novel polyaluminum-titanium chloride composite coagulant (PATC) was prepared, and its binding behaviors with HA@APS under different pH conditions were analyzed from a microscopic perspective. It was found that at pH 4, π-π conjugation was the dominant interaction between HA and APS. And the main removal mechanism of HA@APS by PATC was surface complexation. With the increase of pH, π-π conjugation, n-π electron donor-acceptor interaction (EDA), and hydrogen bonding gradually dominated the interaction between APS and HA. At pH 7, PATC hydrolyzed to form various polynuclear Al-Ti species, which could meet the demand for different binding sites of HA@APS. Under alkaline conditions, HB and n-π EDA in HA@APS were weakened, while π-π conjugation held a dominant position again. At this time, the main coagulation mechanism of PATC changed from charge neutralization to sweeping action, accompanied by hydrogen bonding. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Microplastics (MPs) have attracted the public's attention due to their potential toxicity to humans. The combined pollution of aged microplastics and humic acid (HA) will bring great harm to aquatic environment. The development of novel composite coagulants is hopeful to efficiently remove MPs and their combined pollutants. Elucidating the interactions between HA and aged MPs is helpful to understand the transformation and fate of MPs in actual environments, and to reveal the removal mechanism of composite pollutants by coagulation. The findings presented here will provide theoretical guidance for addressing the challenges of coagulation technology in treating new pollutants in practice.

Abstract
In recent years, the discharge of various emerging pollutants, chemicals, and dyes in water and wastewater has represented one of the prominent human problems. Since water pollution is directly related to human health, highly resistant and emerging compounds in aquatic environments will pose many potential risks to the health of all living beings. Therefore, water pollution is a very acute problem that has constantly increased in recent years with the expansion of various industries. Consequently, choosing efficient and innovative wastewater treatment methods to remove contaminants is crucial. Among advanced oxidation processes, electrochemical oxidation (EO) is the most common and effective method for removing persistent pollutants from municipal and industrial wastewater. However, despite the great progress in using EO to treat real wastewater, there are still many gaps. This is due to the lack of comprehensive information on the operating parameters which affect the process and its operating costs. In this paper, among various scientific articles, the impact of operational parameters on the EO performances, a comparison between different electrochemical reactor configurations, and a report on general mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation of organic pollutants have been reported. Moreover, an evaluation of cost analysis and energy consumption requirements have also been discussed. Finally, the combination process between EO and photocatalysis (PC), called photoelectrocatalysis (PEC), has been discussed and reviewed briefly. This article shows that there is a direct relationship between important operating parameters with the amount of costs and the final removal efficiency of emerging pollutants. Optimal operating conditions can be achieved by paying special attention to reactor design, which can lead to higher efficiency and more efficient treatment. The rapid development of EO for removing emerging pollutants from impacted water and its combination with other green methods can result in more efficient approaches to face the pressing water pollution challenge. PEC proved to be a promising pollutants degradation technology, in which renewable energy sources can be adopted as a primer to perform an environmentally friendly water treatment.

Abstract
In the last few years, many industrial sectors have generated and discharged large volumes of saline wastewater into the environment. In the present work, the electrochemical removal of nitrogen compounds from synthetic saline wastewater was investigated through a lab-scale experimental reactor. Experiments were carried out to examine the impacts of the operational parameters, such as electrolyte composition and concentration, applied current intensity, and initial ammoniacal nitrogen concentration, on the total nitrogen removal efficiency. Using NaCl as an electrolyte, the NTOT removal was higher than Na2SO4 and NaClO4; however, increasing the initial NaCl concentration over 250 mg·L-1 resulted in no benefits for the NTOT removal efficiency. A rise in the current intensity from 0.05 A to 0.15 A resulted in an improvement in NTOT removal. Nevertheless, a further increase to 0.25 A led to basically no enhancement of the efficiency. A lower initial ammoniacal nitrogen concentration resulted in higher removal efficiency. The highest NTOT removal (about 75%) was achieved after 90 min of treatment operating with a NaCl concentration of 250 mg·L-1 at an applied current intensity of 0.15 A and with an initial ammoniacal nitrogen concentration of 13 mg·L-1. The nitrogen degradation mechanism proposed assumes a series-parallel reaction system, with a first step in which NH4+ is in equilibrium with NH3. Moreover, the nitrogen molar balance showed that the main product of nitrogen oxidation was N2, but NO3- was also detected. Collectively, electrochemical treatment is a promising approach for the removal of nitrogen compounds from impacted saline wastewater.

Abstract
The zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) (UiO-66)/bamboo carbon (BC) composite with chitosan was prepared using hydrothermal and impregnation methods and used for capacitive desalination (CDI) and disinfection of water. The results showed that these composites had fast ion exchange and charge transfer properties. During the CDI process, these composites' electrodes exhibited good cycle stability, electrosorption capacity (4.25 mg/g) and excellent bactericidal effect. These carbon-based composites electrodes' bactericidal rate for Escherichia coli could reach 99.99% within 20 minutes; therefore, they had good performance and were a good choice for high-performance deionization applications.

Abstract
This work investigates the electrochemical oxidation of palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment using platinum (Pt) as anode and graphite as a cathode. The response surface methodology was used to investigate the relationships between different factors conditions (voltage, electrolysis time and chemical support) and responses of the treatment (chemical oxygen demand reduction, colour removal, and total oil removal). A quadratic mathematical model was chosen for all responses using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) with R2 0.9853 for COD reduction, R2 0.9478 for colour removal and R2 0.9185 for total oil removal. According to Derringer's function desirability, under the optimum condition (Voltage 15, electrolysis time 2 h, and 19.95 mg/L NaCl) of POME treatment, 84% of COD reduction, 98% of colour removal and 99% total oil of removal could be achieved. These results indicate that platinum as an anode material is effective for the electrochemical oxidation treatment of POME.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop a simple, economical and effective treatment scheme to treat effluents from small scale textile dyeing units and tanneries, which have been set up in rural areas. The physicochemical properties of real time effluents procured from these industries were analysed. The workflow required for treating these effluents were ascertained by preliminary tests carried out on synthetically created solutions. A novel treatment scheme for tannery and textile dye effluents sludge volume reduction by the use of sodium hypochlorite was identified. Effective methods for the safe disposal and recycling of all the by-products generated from different steps were discussed. The proposed scheme was successfully able to decolourize and detoxify both the tannery and textile dyeing effluent with over 90% removal of both COD and BOD. The impacts of the treatment scheme on 14 different effluent parameters were reported. The methodology developed in this study may be utilized to construct simple localized treatment units for handling effluents in isolated rural areas. This preliminary treatment at the source, will help in the reduction of the load on the local treatment plants and prevent their choking.

Abstract
Fresh leachate is commonly featured with high concentrations of degradable organic matters, which can impede the performance of traditional biological treatment, especially the anaerobic reactor. Aiming at improving the biological treatment process of fresh leachate, this study creatively proposed a microaerobic-IC-AO2 (MAICAO2) process and compared it with traditional biological process, then optimized the operating conditions. Meanwhile, this work investigated the transformation rules and molecular compositions of dissolved organic matters (DOM) during MAICAO2 process, particularly the hazardous DOM (antibiotics). The innovative MAICAO2 process can effectively remove 99% chemical oxygen demand (COD), 91% total nitrogen (TN) and 91% ammonia (NH4+-N) during the operation time, and the removal efficiencies of COD, TN and NH4+-N in MAICAO2 process increased approximately 2%, 14% and 13% compared to ICAOAO process. Electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS) confirmed that microaeration could ensure over 53% small molecular organic acids degrade before the subsequent anaerobic reaction so the system could resist the high concentration organic matters stress and improve the denitrification efficiency. Further analysis showed that different categories of antibiotics (including 6 sulfonamides, 4 tetracyclines, 2 macrolides, 4 quinolones and 2 chloramphenicols) could be effectively removed by MAICAO2 process with the total removal efficiency of 50%. This work proposed a new scenario for fresh leachate treatment by proposing the importance of the microaeration pretreatment during the biological treatment process.

Abstract
In this study, effects of low-intensity electrical currents (200, 800 and 1400 mA), ultrasound frequencies (24 and 40 kHz) and their combinations were applied at the duration period of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 min for the degradation of captan, thiamethoxam and metalaxyl residues in lettuce samples. Residues of the pesticides were determined by gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry and electron capture detector. The results indicated that the combination of low-intensity electrical current and ultrasound was found to be effective for the reduction of the pesticides. The most effective combination was obtained to be current of 1400 mA and ultrasound frequency of 24 kHz at 10 min. Under this circumstance, 92.57, 81.99 and 93.09% of captan, thiamethoxam and metalaxyl residues were decreased, respectively. The findings suggest that the combination of low-intensity electrical current and ultrasound applications has an important potential for the degradation of pesticide residues.
