Spatial Characteristics of Groundwater Chemistry in Unzen, Nagasaki, Japan

Hydrogeochemical evaluation, groundwater contamination and associated health risk in southern Tangail, Bangladesh

Water pollution is a worldwide concern that has growing severe in developed and developing nations. Increasing groundwater pollution threatening both the physical and environmental health of billions of people as well as economic progress. Consequently, hydrogeochemistry, water quality and potential health risk assessment is crucial for water resource management. The study area comprises Jamuna Floodplain (Holocene deposit) area in the west and the Madhupur tract (Pleistocene deposit) area in the eastern part. Total 39 groundwater samples were collected from the study area and were analyzed for physicochemical parameters, hydrogeochemical, trace metals, and isotopic composition. The water types are mainly Ca-HCO₃^- to Na-HCO₃^- types. The isotopic compositions (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) analysis traces the recent recharge in Floodplain area from rainwater and no recent recharge in Madhupur tract. The concentration of NO₃^-, As, Cr, Ni, Pb, Fe, and Mn in shallow and intermediate aquifer at the Floodplain area exceed the WHO-2011 permissible limit and is lower at deep Holocene and Madhupur tract aquifer. The integrated weighted water quality index (IWQI) exposed groundwater from shallow and intermediate aquifer are unsuitable for drinking and deep Holocene aquifer and Madhupur tract are suitable for drinking purposes. PCA analysis confirmed that anthropogenic activity is dominant in shallow and intermediate aquifers. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for adults and children is due to oral and dermal exposure. The non-carcinogenic risk evaluation revealed that the mean hazard index (HI) values range from 0.009742 to 16.37 for adults and 0.0124-20.83 for children, respectively, and most groundwater samples from shallow and intermediate aquifers exceed the permissible limit (HI > 1). The carcinogenic risk ranges from 2.71 × 10^-6-0.014 for adults and 3.44 × 10^-6-0.017 for children via oral consumption and 7.09 × 10^-11-1.18 × 10^-6 for adults and 1.25 × 10^-10-2.09 × 10^-6 for children via dermal exposure. Spatial distribution shows the presence of trace metal and associated health risk is high in shallow and intermediate aquifer (Holocene) than in the deep (Holocene) Madhupur tract (Pleistocene). The study implies that effective water management will ensure safe drinking water for the future generation of people.

Appraisal of groundwater quality with WQI and human health risk assessment in Karamık wetland and surroundings (Afyonkarahisar/Turkey)

Groundwater in Karamık wetland and surroundings, which is one of the important wetlands in Turkey, was examined and the chemical properties and quality of groundwater were determined in the present study. In addition, the possible risks to human health as a result of groundwater usage were investigated along with spatial analyses carried out using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Physicochemical analyses were carried out on 25 samples taken from groundwater. The dominant ions in the study area are Ca, Mg, and HCO₃. When the results are compared with the limit values in the valid drinking water guidelines such as TSI-266 (Standards for drinking waters, 2005) and WHO (Guidelines for drinking-water quality, 2011), the groundwaters were not suitable for use as drinking water in terms of NO₃, Fe, Pb and As. The analysis results were evaluated together with GIS and Water Quality Index (WQI) methods. In the evaluations with the WQI method, 76% of the samples were in the "poor water" class. The groundwater in the study area is polluted by both geogenic and anthropogenic sources. For this reason, health risk assessment was performed due to the use of groundwater in the region by the local people in different areas, especially as drinking water, and the negative effects of water quality. Accordingly, there are non-carcinogenic negative effects on health in terms of NO₃, As, Pb and Fe parameters from the use of groundwater by children. In addition, Pb and As concentrations are at carcinogenic levels for both children and adults in all groundwater samples collected from the study area. Therefore, it is not recommended to use groundwater as drinking water without treatment.

Distribution of heavy metals and related health risks through soil ingestion in rural areas of western Japan

The distribution of heavy metal concentrations and related human health risks were investigated for Shimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The purpose was to clarify the potential for heavy metal contamination in an area already known to be affected by nitrate pollution. A total of 188 soil samples was collected at 47 sites. The heavy metal content of the soil was measured in laboratory using an X-ray analyzer. The highest contents of heavy metals exceeded common background concentration in Japanese soils. The highest concentrations of Cu and Zn appear to be related to application of livestock waste in agriculture. Principal component and cluster analyses were performed to classify the sampling sites based on soil content of heavy metals. Three principal components (PCs) were extracted with the first PC explaining crustal constituents, the second explaining application of livestock waste, and the third explaining other types of anthropogenic pollutants. The cluster analysis resulted in 5 groups regarding the sampling locations. In total, 44% of sampling locations belonged to Group 1 and 46% to Group 2, distributed over the agricultural land in the northern part of the city and the urban area in the southern part of the city, respectively. There is a potential temporal health risk for the Pb content at specific locations in the area.

Activated Carbon and Coconut Coir with the Incorporation of ABR System as Greywater Filter: The Implications for Wastewater Treatment

Greywater refers to wastewater generated from domestic activities, which do not contain fecal contamination. Therefore, this study aims to treat greywater in Makassar city to speed up the water cycle and enable reuse, as an environmental conservation strategy. The water parameters measured were pH, Turbidity, Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). According to the results, the greywater’s BOD, COD, and TTS contents were 49.98 to 54.88 mg/L, 509 to 655 mg/L, and 404.40 to 464.65 mg/L, respectively, all of which exceed WHO wastewater quality standards. The use of a wastewater treatment installation comprising a combination of Activated Carbon (AC) and Coconut Coir (CC) with the incorporation of the Anaerobic Baffle Reactor (ABR) system as a greywater filter successfully reduced the city’s greywater pollution. In addition, the new BOD content fulfills the environmentally safe wastewater standards, while the new COD and TSS contents were 152 mg/L to 184 mg/L and 59.68 mg/L to 77.42 mg/L, respectively, which are close to the WHO domestic wastewater quality standards.
