Groundwater Nitrate Removal Performance of Selected Pseudomonas Strains Carrying nosZ Gene in Aerobic Granular Sequential Batch Reactors

Inoculation effect of Pseudomonas sp. TF716 on N2O emissions during rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil

The demand for rhizoremediation technology that can minimize greenhouse gas emissions while effectively removing pollutants in order to mitigate climate change has increased. The inoculation effect of N₂O-reducing Pseudomonas sp. TF716 on N₂O emissions and on remediation performance during the rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil planted with tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) or maize (Zea mays) was investigated. Pseudomonas sp. TF716 was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tall fescue. The maximum N₂O reduction rate of TF716 was 18.9 mmol N₂O g dry cells⁻¹ h⁻¹, which is superior to the rates for previously reported Pseudomonas spp. When Pseudomonas sp. TF716 was added to diesel-contaminated soil planted with tall fescue, the soil N₂O-reduction potential was 2.88 times higher than that of soil with no inoculation during the initial period (0–19 d), and 1.08–1.13 times higher thereafter. However, there was no enhancement in the N₂O-reduction potential for the soil planted with maize following inoculation with strain TF716. In addition, TF716 inoculation did not significantly affect diesel degradation during rhizoremediation, suggesting that the activity of those microorganisms involved in diesel degradation was unaffected by TF716 treatment. Analysis of the dynamics of the bacterial genera associated with N₂O reduction showed that Pseudomonas had the highest relative abundance during the rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil planted with tall fescue and treated with strain TF716. Overall, these results suggest that N₂O emissions during the rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil using tall fescue can be reduced with the addition of Pseudomonas sp. TF716.

Effective and selective electroreduction of aqueous nitrate catalyzed by copper particles on multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Drinking-water contamination with nitrate ions is inevitable and wide spreading, which demands feasible removal. Water de-nitration by potentiostatic electroreduction is described here. A novel electrocatalyst based on nano-copper particles, supported onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and spray-deposited onto fluorine doped tin oxide-glass substrates, is described. The Cu/MWCNT/FTO electrode has been characterized by several methods and assessed as a working electrode in aqueous nitrate ion electroreduction, in comparison with MWCNT sprayed on FTO (MWCNT/FTO) with no copper. Comparison with earlier reported electrodes is also described. XRD patterns confirm the presence of nano-copper crystallites, in the electrode, with average size ⁓45 nm. Within 2 h of electrolysis, Cu/MWVNT/FTO exhibits more than 65% removal of nitrate at -1.80 V (vs. SCE). In longer time (7 h) the electrode completely converts the nitrate into N₂ (∼65%) and (NH₄⁺) ∼35% with no NO₂^- ions. The kinetics show 0.76 order with respect to nitrate, and a rate constant 4.53 × 10^-2 min^-1 higher than earlier counterparts. The new electrode functions under various conditions of temperature, pH, electrolyte type and concentration and inter-electrode spacing, only at ambient applied potential. Moreover, the electrode exhibits stability under nitrate electroreduction conditions, and can be recovered and reused for multiple times without efficiency loss. XRD and EDS results also confirm the electrode stability after multiple reuse. Compared to earlier systems, the Cu/MWCNT/FTO is environmentally stable, safe, non-costly with high nitrate removal efficiency and selectivity.

Elimination of inorganic carbon and nitrogen resided in swine wastewater using Thermosynechococcus sp. CL-1 enriched culture

Nutrient pollution released from highly accumulated swine wastewater is getting concerned due to global warming and waterbody harmful. Traditional combination of nitrification and denitrification is commonly applied to remove carbon and nitrogen compounds resided in various wastewater with disadvantages of high cost and energy requirements. This study applied the thermophilic flat panel photobioreactor (tFPBR) with high growth rate of TCL-1 culture to evaluate the efficiency of inorganic carbon and nitrogen transformation. This 12-h operation resulted that TCL-1 enriched batch, grown in 50 °C and alkaline environment with 1,000 µE/m²/s light intensity, had high potential for CO₂ fixation rate of 122.29 ± 9.93 mg/L/h and nitrogen removal rate of 7.76 mg-N/L/h treating swine wastewater, in comparison with comprehensive community involved in carbon and nitrogen cycles in the field-scale anoxic tank. This study provided the Rapid-growing photosynthetic cyanobacteria in place of slow-growing autotrophic microbes for of carbon and nitrogen transformation in the wastewater system.
