Evaluation of Three Biomaterials from Coconut Mesocarp for Use in Water Treatments Polluted with an Anionic Dye

Utilizing Novel Lignocellulosic Material from Hart's-Tongue Fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) Leaves for Crystal Violet Adsorption: Characterization, Application, and Optimization

In this work, a new lignocellulosic adsorbent was obtained and tested for crystal violet dye removal from water. The material was obtained from hart's-tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) leaves after minimal processing, without chemical or thermal treatment. The surface of the material was characterized using a variety of techniques, including FTIR, SEM, and color analysis. The effect of various factors on the adsorption capacity was then investigated and discussed. The kinetic and equilibrium studies showed that the general-order kinetic model and the Sips isotherm are the most suitable to describe the adsorption process. The equilibrium time was reached after 20 min and the maximum calculated value of the adsorption capacity was 224.2 (mg g-1). The determined values for the thermodynamic parameters indicated physical adsorption as the main mechanism involved in the process. The Taguchi method was used to optimize the adsorption conditions and identify the most influential controllable factor, which was pH. ANOVA (general linear model) was used to calculate the percentage contribution of each controllable factor to dye removal efficiency. Analysis of all the results shows that hart's-tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) leaves are a very inexpensive, readily available, and effective adsorbent for removing crystal violet dye from aqueous solutions.

A comprehensive review of coconut-based porous materials for wastewater treatment and CO2 capture

For several decades, water pollution has become a major threat to aquatic and non-aquatic species, including humans. Different treatment techniques have already been proposed and implemented depending on wastewater characteristics. But many of these treatment techniques are expensive and inefficient. Adsorption-based techniques have shown impressive performances as an inexpensive treatment method previously. Coconut-based resources have been considered as adsorbents for wastewater treatment because of their abundance, low cost, and favorable surface properties. However, over the last decade, no comprehensive study has been published regarding biochar from coconut-based materials for wastewater treatment and CO2 capture. This review discusses biochar production technology for coconut-based materials, its modification and characterization, its utilization as an adsorbent for removing metals and organics from wastewater, and the associated removal mechanisms and the economic aspects of coconut-based biochar. Coconut-based materials are cheap and effective for removing various organic compounds such as pesticides, hormones, phenol, and phenolic compounds from solutions and capturing CO2 from air mainly through the pore-filling mechanism. Utilizing coconut-based biochars in a hybrid system that combines adsorption and other techniques, such as biotechnology or chemical coagulation is a promising way to increase their performance as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment.

A comprehensive review of anionic azo dyes adsorption on surface-functionalised silicas

Surface -functionalised silica networks are advanced adsorbents. They have been given much attention for treating wastewater using the adsorption technique due to the silanol reactivity, resulting in strong binding affinities towards many pollutants. This review discusses the removal of anionic azo dyes utilising various functional groups such as amines, surfactants, polymers, macrocyclic, and other chelating groups functionalised on silica's surface. This review also reveals the steadily increasing interest in surface-functionalised silicas as adsorbents, emphasising the scholarly advancements in this field as a platform for future research. For that, adsorption capacities with different experimental conditions have been compared. The possible adsorption mechanisms, rate-limiting step, and factors affecting the anionic azo dye adsorption process have been comprehensively discussed. This review discloses that adsorbent characteristics such as porosity and functional groups, besides structural properties of an anionic azo dye, significantly affect adsorption. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models, with a predominantly spontaneous and endothermic nature. Multiple interactions, including electrostatic interaction, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonding, are observed between dyes and functionalised silicas, indicating the adsorption process's complexity. Regeneration and cost-economic analysis are also presented to provide a roadmap for sustainable improvements. Chemical and biological regeneration techniques restore > 80% of the spent functionalised silicas. There is a significant opportunity to improve their efficiencies and regenerability, resulting in surface-functionalised silicas being used commercially instead of only in the laboratory. Finally, future research has been proposed by identifying current research gaps, particularly concerning the application of functionalised silicas in wastewater treatment.
