Assessing Hydropower Potential in Nepal's Sunkoshi River Basin: An Integrated GIS and SWAT Hydrological Modeling Approach

This study assessed the hydropower potential of a mountain watershed within the Sunkoshi River basin in Sindhupalchok, Nepal, utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) and the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) hydrological model. Topographical, soil, land use, meteorological, and discharge data were employed to assess the study area for the appropriateness of hydropower generation. SWAT was utilized to delineate the Sunkoshi basin into 23 distinct subbasins and involved the creation of a detailed river network, incorporating various hydrological attributes including stream links, stream order, stream length, and slope gradient. After that, it was employed to simulate river discharges within these subbasins. The Sequential Uncertainty Fitting Version 2 (SUFI-2) algorithm, integrated within the SWAT Calibration and Uncertainty Program (SWAT-CUP), was employed to calibrate and validate the model. This step involved the adjustment of 25 selected parameters to enhance the model's accuracy and reliability in representing the hydrological processes of the Sunkoshi basin. Model performance was assessed utilizing three well-established efficiency criteria: coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.79), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE = 0.73), and percent bias (PBIAS = 17.59). The study identified 36 sites across streams of order 3, 4, and 5 as having potential for hydropower generation. The hydropower potential at each identified site was evaluated using estimated stream flow and topographical head at various probability of exceedance (PoE) levels (40%, 45%, 50%, and 60%). The aggregate hydropower potential of the basin was quantified, yielding a potential of 371.30 MW at a 40% PoE. The findings suggest that an integrated approach combining SWAT-based hydrological modeling within a GIS can accurately assess a river basin's hydropower potential and provide insights into further evaluation of the comprehensive environmental assessment of the fragile Himalayan watersheds.

An analysis of LULC changes for understanding the impact of anthropogenic activities on food security: a case study of Dudhganga watershed, India

Although the Dudhganga watershed is the primary water and food resource of the Kashmir Valley, it has undergone significant changes in food resources and strategies due to rampant urbanization in the area over the past 20 years. This urbanization has had a profound impact on the watershed and has also affected land use and land cover (LULC) patterns and environmental changes. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of urban development on food security parameters in the Dudhganga watershed area, India, from 2000 to 2020, by evaluating LULC changes. Additionally, the study aims to examine the relationship between climate changes and LULC indices, such as the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI). The results indicate a 21.66% increase in barren areas, at the expense of snow-covered lands, during the 2000-2020 period. The primary land cover transition observed is towards barren areas. The predictions for LULC in 2030 highlight the need for careful management of land use and climate changes in the study area. This study can assist local government officials in reassessing food strategies by identifying areas where urban expansion should be controlled and climate impacts minimized, to prevent local hunger and ecological degradation. Therefore, the development of systematic urban planning approaches and mitigation of climate change sources are crucial. Furthermore, the adoption of advanced agricultural technology should be considered to mitigate the impact of urban expansion.

Using benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators to evaluate the impact of anthropogenic stressors on water quality and sediment properties of a West African lagoon

This study aimed to investigate the impact of anthropogenic stressors (landfilling, navigation for transport of goods, cooling in fossil fuel, urbanization, industrial expansion, agriculture activities, and recreational activities) on environmental variables, microbiological quality, and sediment properties using benthic macroinvertebrates as a bioindicator within Lagos Lagoon, Nigeria. Four (4) sampling stations were established with respect to their importance/anthropogenic activities within the Lagos Lagoon. Surface water, bottom substrates, and benthic macroinvertebrate fauna samples were collected bimonthly from each sampling station for a year and analyzed using appropriate standard methods and procedures. The highest pH range of 7.96-8.01 (7.98 ± 2.35) was recorded at Site IV, while the lowest range of 6.41-7.01 (6.15 ± 1.14) was observed at Site II, and there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) among the pH mean values across the sites. High values of salinity, chloride, sodium, COD, BOD, manganese, nickel, cadmium, and nitrate were recorded among the surface water physicochemical parameters, which were above WHO (2011) permissible limits, while the high concentrations of toxic metals (Pb, Cr, Zn, and Cd) was recorded in sediment. A total of 26 species of benthic macroinvertebrates were recorded during this study, which belongs to eight (8) classes. Gastropoda recorded the highest percentage contribution of 39.12%, followed by polychaeta accounting for 30.34%, while malacostraca contributed 2.63%. The highest abundance of macroinvertebrates was recorded at Site I (256 Indiv/m2), followed by Site IV (252 Indiv/m2), and the least was observed at Site II (195 Indiv/m2). Based on the results of the physico-chemical, heavy metals, microbial quality, and macroinvertebrates assemblage obtained from this study revealed the adverse effect of anthropogenic activities on water quality degradation. It plays a significant role in the distribution and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in an aquatic environment.
