The Partial Contribution of Constructed Wetland Components (Roots, Gravel, Microorganisms) in the Removal of Phenols: A Mini Review

Efficient dissipation of acetamiprid, metalaxyl, S-metolachlor and terbuthylazine in a full-scale free water surface constructed wetland in Bologna province, Italy: A kinetic modeling study

The study investigated the dissipation ability of a vegetated free water surface (FWS) constructed wetland (CW) in treating pesticides-contaminated agricultural runoff/drainage water in a rural area belonging to Bologna province (Italy). The experiment simulated a 0.1% pesticide agricultural water runoff/drainage event from a 12.5-ha farm by dissolving acetamiprid, metalaxyl, S-metolachlor, and terbuthylazine in 1000 L of water and pumping it into the CW. Water and sediment samples from the CW were collected for 4 months at different time intervals to determine pesticide concentrations by multiresidue extraction and chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. In parallel, no active compounds were detected in the CW sediments during the experimental period. Pesticides dissipation in the wetland water compartment was modeled according to best data practices by fitting the data to Single First Order (SFO), First Order Multi-Compartment (FOMC) and Double First Order in Parallel (DFOP) kinetic models. SFO (except for metalaxyl), FOMC and DFOP kinetic models adequately predicted the dissipation for the four investigated molecules, with the DFOP kinetic model that better fitted the observed data. The modeled distribution of each pesticide between biomass and water in the CW highly correlated with environmental indexes as Kow and bioconcentration factor. Computed DT50 by DFOP model were 2.169, 8.019, 1.551 and 2.047 days for acetamiprid, metalaxyl, S-metolachlor, and terbuthylazine, respectively. Although the exact degradation mechanisms of each pesticide require further study, the FWS CW was found to be effective in treating pesticides-contaminated agricultural runoff/drainage water within an acceptable time. Therefore, this technology proved to be a valuable tool for mitigating pesticides runoff occurring after intense rain events.

Long-term synergic removal performance of N, P, and CuO nanoparticles in constructed wetlands along with temporal record of Cu pollution in substrate-biofilm

With continued exposure to CuO nanoparticles (NPs) which were toxic to organisms, the performance of wastewater treatment facility might be affected. In present study, the feasibility of constructed wetlands (CWs) for wastewater treatment containing CuO NPs and common pollutants was comprehensively explored. It was found that CWs removed 98.80-99.84% CuO NPs and 90.91-91.83% COD within 300 days. However, N and P removals were affected to varying degrees by CuO NPs. N removal was inhibited only by 0.5 mg/L CuO NPs with 19.75% decreases on the mean from day 200-300. P removal was reduced by 3.80-50.75% and 1.92-7.19% under exposure of 0.5 and 5 mg/L CuO NPs throughout the experiment. Moreover, CuO NPs changed the adsorption potential of P and ammonium-N on sand-biofilm. Cu concentrations in spatial distribution decreased, while they in temporal distribution increased from 36.94 to 97.78 μg/g and from 70.92 to 282.66 μg/g at middle sand layer exposed to 0.5 and 5 mg/L CuO NPs. Mass balance model showed that substrate-biofilm was main pollutant sink for CuO NPs, N, and P. The minor Cu was absorbed by plants exposed to 0.5 and 5 mg/L CuO NPs, which decreased N by 53.40% and 18.51%，and P by 52.35% and 21.62%. Sequencing analysis indicated that CuO NPs also altered spatial microbial community. N-degrading bacteria (Rhodanobacter, Thauera, Nitrospira) changed differently, while phosphate accumulation organisms (Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Microlunatus) reduced. Overall, the negative effects of CuO NPs on N and P removal should be noted when CWs as ecological technologies are used to treat CuO NPs-containing wastewater.

Ecological consequences of urban blue space transformation

This study presents the ecological consequences of the blue space conversion and its qualitative degradation in the English Bazar Municipality (EBM) and its surrounding area. The primary blue spaces of the area, the marshy wetland called Chatra and Mohananda river, are the most affected due to urban activities like built-up expansion and sewage and wastewater discharge. Built-up development encroached more than 300 m within wetland territory and caused a 0.57 km² conversion of wetland area. It is also evident within the bed of the Mohananda river. Agriculture also caused the conversion of the blue space. As a result, the wetland's ecosystem service value (ESV) was reduced by 12.7%, along with a reduction of cultural services by 27.86%. The massive pouring of sewage and wastewater caused hyper-eutrophication in almost the entire wetland area. The trophic state index (TSI) value increased significantly in the last 10 years, causing high growth and areal expansion of water hyacinth. The expanding settlements and agricultural land that captured the river channel face inundation vulnerability during peak discharge. Extreme danger level discharge causes floods in the extensive municipality area. The areal encroachment, water extraction, sewage and wastewater discharge, and water quality deterioration caused severe hydro-ecological degradation of the river. Since blue space is critically essential for urban environmental health, these ecological consequences can cause a crisis for urban wellbeing. Therefore, the anthropogenic adversities towards the urban blue space must be restricted, and the blue space's ecological sustenance must be paid enough attention.
