Fe0-Supported Anaerobic Digestion for Organics and Nutrients Removal from Domestic Sewage

The nutritional composition of six plant species after irrigation with treated wastewater and possible hazards by heavy metal accumulation

A field experiment was conducted investigating the possibility of using treated wastewater (TWW) on sites affected by water scarcity in summer, waterlogging during the wet season, and salinity. A corresponding pot experiment was conducted comparable to the field experiment in Kalaât Landelous. The same plant species (Atriplex nummularia Lindl., Eucalyptus gomphocephala DC., Acacia cyanophylla Lindl., Casuarina glauca Sieber ex Spreng., Cupressus sempervirens L., and Pinus halepensis Mill.) were grown with the same treatments. While, in the field the plants, elemental composition cannot be linked to inputs by TWW, this was studied under controlled conditions. Additionally, a control was established lower in salinity receiving tap water. The effect of TWW irrigation on macro- and microelement uptake by the six plant species was studied. The treatments were high soil salinity under drained saline (DS) conditions, high salinity under waterlogged saline (WS), and a drained non-saline control (DNS: EC = 3.0 dS/m, pH = 8.4). TWW application under DS treatment increased Na, Cl, Ca, Mg, N, P, and K in most plant tissues compared to the control. TWW application in WS treatment resulted in an increase in heavy metals. Cu and Zn showed the highest bioaccumulation factor (BAF). The BAF in different plant tissues followed the order: Cu > Zn > Mn > Cd > Ni > Co > Pb. The plants accumulated significant amounts of metals in their roots.

Application of Bioelectrochemical Systems and Anaerobic Additives in Wastewater Treatment: A Conceptual Review

The interspecies electron transfer (IET) between microbes and archaea is the key to how the anaerobic digestion process performs. However, renewable energy technology that utilizes the application of a bioelectrochemical system together with anaerobic additives such as magnetite-nanoparticles can promote both direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) as well as indirect interspecies electron transfer (IIET). This has several advantages, including higher removal of toxic pollutants present in municipal wastewater, higher biomass to renewable energy conversion, and greater electrochemical efficiencies. This review explores the synergistic influence of bioelectrochemical systems and anaerobic additives on the anaerobic digestion of complex substrates such as sewage sludge. The review discussions present the mechanisms and limitations of the conventional anaerobic digestion process. In addition, the applicability of additives in syntrophic, metabolic, catalytic, enzymatic, and cation exchange activities of the anaerobic digestion process are highlighted. The synergistic effect of bio-additives and operational factors of the bioelectrochemical system is explored. It is elucidated that a bioelectrochemical system coupled with nanomaterial additives can increase biogas-methane potential compared to anaerobic digestion. Therefore, the prospects of a bioelectrochemical system for wastewater require research attention.

Provision of Desalinated Irrigation Water by the Desalination of Groundwater Abstracted from a Saline Aquifer

Globally, about 54 million ha of cropland are irrigated with saline water. Globally, the soils associated with about 1 billion ha are affected by salinization. A small decrease in irrigation water salinity (and soil salinity) can result in a disproportionally large increase in crop yield. This study uses a zero-valent iron desalination reactor to effect surface processing of ground water, obtained from an aquifer, to partially desalinate the water. The product water can be used for irrigation, or it can be reinjected into a saline aquifer, to dilute the aquifer water salinity (as part of an aquifer water quality management program), or it can be injected as low-salinity water into an aquifer to provide a recharge barrier to protect against seawater intrusion. The saline water used in this study is processed in a batch flow, bubble column, static bed, diffusion reactor train (0.24 m3), with a processing capacity of 1.7–1.9 m3 d−1 and a processing duration of 3 h. The reactor contained 0.4 kg Fe0. A total of 70 batches of saline water (average 6.9 g NaCl L−1; range: 2.66 to 30.5 g NaCl L−1) were processed sequentially using a single Fe0 charge, without loss of activity. The average desalination was 24.5%. The reactor used a catalytic pressure swing adsorption–desorption process. The trial results were analysed with respect to Na+ ion removal, Cl− ion removal, and the impact of adding trains. The reactor train was then repurposed, using n-Fe0 and emulsified m-Fe0, to establish the impact of reducing particle size on the amount of desalination, and the amount of n-Fe0 required to achieve a specific desalination level.
